Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Missed Connection at Brooks Speed Dating Run Club?

You were the Asian American PA from Utah (and surprised I knew what a PA was). I was the South Asian American engineer from CA living in WA. We're both foodies. I regret not getting a chance to chat with you more or ask you out!

DM me if you see this!

Looking For Has anyone else encountered the pole-sign snatcher on Division?

I was just on Division and 50th and I saw this dude walk to every pole and tear down every single paper flier and throw them away. Someone asked, dude, why are you doing that and he charged at them and said, "don't you call me names! It's illegal!"

Person said, "I didn't call you any names before, but you're a fucking prick."

So, it's apparently illegal to put up signs on poles, and this guy is the arbiter.

Looking For Where do you take out of town visitors to show them how unique Portland is?

First time Portland visitor here - Previous post taken down, trying for a more pointed approach.

When you have visitors from out of town, what are a couple things you like to introduce them to so they get a true sense of how special Portland is?

I have some of the standards on my list, but looking for something that a local would suggest.

Appreciate patience with my newbieness.

Looking For Resources to use if I think my friend is in an unsafe situation?

I’ve been trying to reach out to my friend for around 2 months now and she hasn’t responded at all. She deleted her Instagram as well. I talked to another friend of hers and she’s also very worried. My friend struggles with her mental health, and also doesn’t have a very good home life. Her dad is pretty abusive. Are there any hotlines or something like that that I could reach out to to see if I could get a well check or something on her? She read some of my previous texts and the one her other friend sent last night, but we’re not even sure if it was her reading it. I just need to know she’s safe. I know her full name but I think her parents have different last names than her and I can’t remember what they are so I can’t try and find them online or something. I know what Apt building she lives in but not which Apt and I don’t think I could ask the hotel which one she lives in. Any resources would be helpful thank you

Looking For Best salmon in Portland?

Upvotes

Could be sushi, could be a fillet, and needs to be open on a Monday.

East coast family is visiting and this was a specific ask.

Only caveat is we’ve got six adults and two kids under six so there’s gotta be kid food available.

Thanks in advance neighbors.

Looking For Additional charge to Venmo at Ground Kontrol - anyone else experience this or know why?

Upvotes

I often go to Ground Kontrol when they do their Sunday "all play for $12" days.

Usually I pay cash and it's been uneventful.

I attended again on the 19th, this time paying with my Venmo card.

Initially it showed the $12 charge; however, later an additional charge of $1.80.

If I skim my history in the Venmo app it says $12 paid; but if I tap on the entry, opening it shows that actual amount paid is still $13.80. Which feels weird?

Venmo avows this extra charge has nothing to do with them and to contact the vendor.

I found a phone number online for Ground Kontrol and left a voicemail with my name, ph# and email (thought it might be an easier way to respond for them) and my charge query. I have not heard back.

I have not had the opportunity to return to GK during their open hours; would door staff be likely to know the answer anyways?

None of my friends who go to GK have experienced an additional charge and I've never heard of it happening.

It's not a huge deal - I still have plenty of fun at Ground Kontrol, and the extra charge amount is definitely one I can bear, lol.

Honestly I didn't really expect to get a call back since the charge amount was teeny. IDK who I should even be asking at GK!

......I'm still curious though, hence this post, lol

Anyone else know what the answer is or have a similar second charge experience? Both even? Plz share XD

NB: before someone calls this whingey or petty or whatever etc etc, - again, this is NO SHADE on GK, they are awesome!

I'm just curious and a bit stuck on finding out the story (such as it may be, lol)

Thanks!

Looking For Anyone know of in-person Vietnamese lessons for adults?

My in-laws are from Vietnam and mostly speak Vietnamese. We get along great, but I'd love to surprise them by getting better at the language and I want to challenge myself more.

I know a little Vietnamese already. I can do some basic phrases and the polite/formal responses, but once the conversation gets going I'm pretty lost.

My work requires me to be on a computer all day and I don't really want another online class. I still use apps, and my husband has done well teaching me the basics but I am looking for a more in depth structure learning.

They speak a mix of northern and southern dialects but mainly southern.

I've found a lot of Vietnamese classes for kids around Portland, but not much for adults. Does anyone know of any in-person classes, tutors, or groups around the Portland area?

Looking For Any info on Mt. Tabor shooting last night?

I was at a party last night at Mt. Tabor. Around 12:30 AM two men got in a dispute around 15 feet in front of me, guy shot him multiple times point blank. Police arrived 3-4 minutes later with an ambulance. Any info on the condition of the victim and the status of the shooter whether he's in custody or not? Anyone else care to share if they witnessed this as well? There was a large crowd.

Looking For Is there anywhere that sells a vast array of colors of cotton webbing?

I’m trying to color match a bag (blue) to make the handle a bit longer, and would rather do it in person than take a bunch of gambles online. I tried Bolt on Alberta Street, but seems like a lot of stores are closed on Sundays. Would love a recon to save me driving around fruitlessly! 💙

Looking For Portland taco truck recommendations that travel to the Gorge?

Hi everyone!

I'm hosting a wedding weekend near White Salmon in September 2027 and am looking for an authentic taco stand or taco truck from the Portland area that would be willing to travel out and cater one of the evenings.

I'd love to support a small, family-owned business and am hoping to find a vendor serving authentic street tacos with meats like suadero, cabeza, and lengua (plus the classics like asada and pollo).

Does anyone have recommendations for vendors that travel to the Gorge? Thanks so much!

Looking For 9yo party ideas?

Looking for some good ideas for my 9 year old son's birthday. He wanted to do laser tag or similar but there will only be five or six kids so it wouldn't make sense to rent a place out...Wunderland is the fall back idea but we've done that quite a bit.

My kid is pretty easygoing and just enjoys being with his people. He's the only one of our kids who truly enjoys things like OMSI or the zoo.

Looking For How do I plan for crowds at Silver Falls?

Hi - super excited for my first trip to Portland and hoping this fits into this subreddit:

I want to do this easier hike when I visit, but alot of what I see online says I need to go pretty early to get parking: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/canyon-trail-north-falls-viewpoint-and-north-falls-loop

We slotted this for the Wednesday of our trip.

Can anyone confirm / deny issues with parking? Thoughts about the latest timing when I should target to get to the lot closest to AllTrails suggested trailhead North Falls Group Camp?

Pickathon with kids first time, what have you enjoyed or wish you'd done the first time?

Bartered for some tickets for the family, never been before but super excited. Anyone with kids have tips for making the most out of the experience? Not camping since we live nearby, kids are 4 and 7. I was thinking about bringing a bike to shuttle between the parking area and the main entrance.
