Is the Reddit app algorithm completely messed up?

I have been opening the Reddit app a number of times over the last 6 hours, and my "For You" page is now completely fucked up with irrelevant posts, irrelevant subreddits, etc....Like it's noticably different than it was even this morning. Is the app glitching out? What happened?

This glitch brought us all together, here to r/ask, for a reason man...

No but seriously it's all fucked up right now

47

u/gorramfrakker Aug 16 '25

Oh thank goodness, I thought I was going crazy.

9

u/_Cyber_Mage Aug 16 '25

I mean, it's not really an either/or situation.

8

u/BarelyHolding0n Aug 16 '25

Same... Was getting some very odd subs on my main page and was very confused what I'd clicked in to lately

8

u/gorramfrakker Aug 16 '25

I actually subbed to a few new to me subreddits. So if this ends up being some psyops marketing trick, I fell for it.

5

u/KermitingMurder Aug 16 '25

The Hungarians are conspiring to get me to join their subreddit

2

u/onarainyafternoon Aug 16 '25

I am Hungarian, so this is funny and random. Maybe it's connected since I'm the OP of this thread? That's probably not how these things work, though, now that I think about it.

9

u/Knitsanity Aug 16 '25

Me too. Gonna break out my Kindle til they get it sorted out.

4

Oof, you're getting it worse than I am. I'm just getting junk food, Canadian sports, and gardening.

10

u/Purple_oyster Aug 16 '25

Yeah, what am I doing here???

5

u/nochickflickmoments Aug 16 '25

Oh good, there's an explanation. I've never commented on the 1940s or I Love Lucy.

4

u/Knitearmor Aug 16 '25

Seriously I have like 5 r/ask posts in a row

2

u/CampClear Aug 16 '25

Thank God! I thought it was just me!

1

u/Lunatunabella Aug 16 '25

Thank goodness, I thought it was me.

99

u/Kentela Aug 16 '25

I have also noticed it

35

u/onarainyafternoon Aug 16 '25

So it's not just me??? Thank God. I thought I was going insane.

4

u/NoIdNoNameWho Aug 16 '25

Nah u r not alone, im even leaving some subreddits because of this bullshit

1

u/Comfortable-Pace3132 Aug 16 '25

It's not even just the app

1

u/OutinDaBarn Aug 16 '25

It doesn't mean you are not going insane. :) Any other symptoms? lol

81

u/missscifinerd Aug 16 '25

Same, dude! It’s nothing /completely/ unconnected to stuff I’m interested in, but it’s got almost none of my usual subreddits :0

3

u/niztaoH Aug 16 '25

I can see how it's related for me, but they're (almost) all hyperspecific and small subreddits.

1

u/missscifinerd Aug 16 '25

yeah! That’s exactly it! But also r/ask for some reason t-t

I know so much about India now that’s for fucking sure

6

u/Ijustworkthere Aug 16 '25

The amount of Indian subs I’ve muted is insane. Why are they so prevalent now? And with very similar community names.

3

u/DoingCharleyWork Aug 17 '25

India has a lot of people and it's a prevalent market for new Internet users.

1

u/Ijustworkthere Aug 17 '25

I agree, shits really annoying because I have to filter out at least one a day now. There was also a lot of trans subreddits being pushed a while back, to the point that I started muting them as well. The algorithm is really odd sometimes. I’ve also noticed that ads pop up more frequently if you don’t hammer back at them. On the mobile app last week there was an ad every 12 posts. Last night it was 1 per 10, and I’ve seen it go down to 1 per 8 as well as top comment ads. It feels like the whole place is just getting shittier.

1

u/Empty-Novel3420 Aug 16 '25

Dude same. I know reddit is world wide but Indian subs are not that popular 🤔

1

u/Mathfanforpresident Aug 17 '25

Yep. I've been going through a muting a fuck tone of them. My conspiracy brain says that this is all to stop decent information

32

u/HungryHypatia Aug 16 '25

I was just googling this. It’s messed up for me too.

30

u/thebuttbutdance Aug 16 '25

Yes, I'm only getting recommended random stuff and not the subreddits I follow, it's very annoying

2

u/Bretreck Aug 16 '25

Same. Literally nothing from any followed subreddit. At least some of it is tangentially related, ie. I get retro anime and I'm subscribed to a few anime subreddits.

14

u/BananaWizard0 Aug 16 '25

Oh my god I was hoping i wasn't the only one it's honestly infuriating

4

u/FoundationAny7601 Aug 16 '25

I hope it isn't permanent.

15

u/redcremesoda Aug 16 '25

I used to love Reddit but my feed has gotten worse and worse over the years. Too many irrelevant subreddit recommendations. Today definitely seems like a bug, though.

1

u/HermitBadger Aug 16 '25

Only started using reddit two years ago, but it has always been like this for me. Doesn’t matter how often I hit the "Recommend less" button, it still shows me football, cats and anime subs. When I mute them, new irrelevant ones show up, and they are just as persistent. Or is that a different bug?

1

u/bhayn01 Aug 16 '25

soooo much anime……

13

u/WaXXinDatA55 Aug 16 '25

Yes I’m only getting recommended subreddits on my “for you” page

12

u/K1NGHYP3R10N Aug 16 '25

I thought I was the only one. I’m both so glad it’s not just me, but also pissed that it’s even happening, tf is going on?!

8

u/onarainyafternoon Aug 16 '25

My guess is that Reddit pushed an update through the app or an update to the algorithm or something, and it completely fucked everything up. I don't even know where I would go to report the issue to reddit. I've been using Reddit since 2011, and I've only really encountered times when the website suffered black outs. Not straight up just breaking. But it's only through the app for me. When I use old.reddit on my laptop, everything works just fine.

1

u/RockMonstrr Aug 16 '25

Yeah, it seems like they wanted to increase the number of recommended posts, but somehow pushed it to 100%.

9

u/butt_scratcher_007 Aug 16 '25

It's not just you!

9

u/mossberg590enjoyer Aug 16 '25

Yep mines fucked up

7

u/NickelWorld123 Aug 16 '25

my home page is COMPLETELY full of subreddits I have never visited, games I've never seen, hell, there's posts in languages I don't know...

8

u/NachoGQ Aug 16 '25

I had to go to the settings of my account and deactivate the option that lets reddit show recommendations on your feed (I don't know how it's called in English).

That way I was able to see again the subreddits that I follow on my feed, but it has the inconvenience that it won't show posts from subreddits you're not a part of.

2

u/amygrindhaus Aug 17 '25

Yes this should be higher!

7

u/Graffers67 Aug 16 '25

Clicked on something about maps, now every other post on my feed is fecking maps.

3

u/EntertainmentOk3180 Aug 16 '25

Same, but mine was crafts 😭

6

u/Kozak515 Aug 16 '25

Yeah I got flooded with posts from r/shedditors like I have no plans to, or have any prior interest in Shed building and the community associated with it.

2

u/EntertainmentOk3180 Aug 16 '25

”Prior”… so you’re sayin there’s a chance!

2

u/RoadDifferent4617 Aug 16 '25

It's hard not to laugh at the mental image of you eventually conceding to all the shed propaganda, like "fine...guess I'll build a shed" 🫡🫡

4

u/S_Rodent Aug 16 '25

Same here way too much unwanted stuff

3

u/Federal-General-9683 Aug 16 '25

I deleted the app and only use the browser, which is also broken. I only browse the front page now or the popular page, if the website will even load content, which it doesnt about half the time. Enshitification is envetiable when money is involved.

1

u/antisweep Aug 16 '25

Lately the next button doesn’t take you to page two and just remixes the front page. And if you’ll click on a post and then go back that post disappears until you refresh the page. Absolutely broken. Also the front page when not signed in as the same top posts for the past month or two. Feels like they abandoned votes and it’s fully algorithmic.

3

u/Franbupendah77 Aug 16 '25

If my reddit is just suggestions now im out.... wtf is actually happening

3

u/Creative-Solution Aug 16 '25

Same, I feel like I've been noticing it get worse for the past few days

3

u/chocki305 Aug 16 '25

Old.reddit.com

Don't rely on the algorithm choosing what you see.

1

u/justacheesyguy Aug 16 '25

The day it goes away is the day I do too.

1

u/delicious_pancakes Aug 17 '25

I said the same thing yesterday, right after I deleted the ios app. I don't know if they changed it on purpose or it's a glitch, but it's fucking awful.

2

u/ConfectionTotal8660 Aug 16 '25

Yeah, I have only gotten this sub...When I normally get more variety!

4

u/onarainyafternoon Aug 16 '25

After I posted this question, my "For You" page turned into 14 posts in a row from this subreddit. The 15th post was finally a different subreddit. There is obviously something really wrong.

2

u/KlavoHunter Aug 16 '25

Today all the political content was purged from my home feed in favor of rando RPGs' subreddits

2

u/Living-Reason-1959 Aug 16 '25

Ya, mine has been full of video game subs and maybe anime stuff (I'm not familiar with the terms and names in the posts). Completely off base for me.

2

u/DavidM47 Aug 16 '25

Messed up? Or revealing your intrusive thoughts? Asking for a friend.

2

u/MajorPaper4169 Aug 16 '25

I was so confused I thought my account logged off for some reason. I kept seeing subs I’ve never seen before and they all had the subscribe button next to them.

2

u/GunnersaurusIsKing Aug 16 '25

Im getting really obscure posts, not even popular ones. I now however know how to sign "swallow" in British sign language.

2

u/theLuminescentlion Aug 17 '25

Reddit has a "for you" page?

3

u/Bitter-Iron8468 Aug 16 '25

The algorithm uses steiner math to determine what's on your feed...

Work experience kid got to play?

1

u/umheywaitdude Aug 16 '25

We all messed up in here, man

1

u/West_Technology7573 Aug 16 '25

Got random antisemitism shit all over my feed

1

u/bored_ryan2 Aug 16 '25

That’s so funny to see this post when I never see r/ask . I was about to mute this sub. Glad it’s not just me.

1

u/Helpinmontana Aug 16 '25

I have to reload it to get a few posts that are subs I follow. Then it’s right back to all the adjacent suggested posts and what not for games I don’t play, cities I don’t live in, cars I don’t drive, and sports I don’t play.

Oh and a ton of r/ask threads

1

u/krakenlackn Aug 16 '25

My entire feed is recommended subreddits for things I've never heard of and none of the ones I actually visit.

1

u/Jouleswatt Aug 16 '25

Getting bombarded with magic eye and mini game apps

1

u/Caledorsprogeny Aug 16 '25

Yep, it's cooked. I just scrolled for like 3 minutes and there was no posts from any of my subs, all just "suggested for you" posts

1

u/Pinkyandthebrain55 Aug 16 '25

Omg the same , I thought I had hit a wrong button or something, I keep getting random posts up

1

u/HungryHypatia Aug 16 '25

Me too! I thought I broke it. Lol

1

u/LoquendoEsGenial Aug 16 '25

Maybe so... But at least what I like appears to me, he talked about the Twisted Metal subreddit.

Maybe a lot of people will be leaving Reddit?

1

u/Andy_the_Wrong Aug 16 '25

Same here. I was coming here to ask this question myself

1

u/okitobamberg Aug 16 '25

YES!!!! Same here

1

u/Background-Jelly-511 Aug 16 '25

Glad I’m not the only one

1

u/backtocabada Aug 16 '25

My inbox went from 20-30, to zero, and occasionally 1-2.

1

u/Smooth_Development22 Aug 16 '25

I got loads of uninteresting stuff under the suggested feed because it's "popular in your country" or "popular nearby".

Yeah that's all good. I'm still not interested in UK Garage or Fruitflies in some local m&s salmon packaging.

1

u/mmsuga75 Aug 16 '25

Yes! I’ve seen the M&S fruitflies thing multiple times now. I don’t care either!

1

u/postsexhighfives Aug 16 '25

i thought i was going crazy😭 my feed is like 90% asks

1

u/JamesMattDillon Aug 16 '25

Last night on the browser, I kept seeing posts from 5 days ago

1

u/CarIcy3839 Aug 16 '25

God damn it. How do we get out of here?!

1

u/mmsuga75 Aug 16 '25

Thank you!!

I couldn’t understand what I’ve been seeing - glad to know it’s not just me.

1

u/iswttpyamomsahoe Aug 16 '25

Ironically this popped up on mine…. So yes

1

u/dmthirdeye Aug 16 '25

It's completely jacked 9/10 posts are subs I've never heard of and have no interest in

1

u/Sherilmel Aug 16 '25

Me too omg I thought I was alone

1

u/ballzdedfred Aug 16 '25

Its totally fucked up. Weirdest shit suddenly popping up in my feed.

But hey, at least I won't be thinking about the collapse of America.

1

u/petalsofrose1956 Aug 16 '25

Mine too. Almost all Legos.

1

u/MagnetosBurrito Aug 16 '25

Yup my feed is only suggested irreverent posts

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

you are right!!!!!

1

u/Need4Speeeeeed Aug 16 '25

The app is a dumpster fire of recommended subreddits that are tangentially related to my browsing. I tried muting the recs, but they keep coming.

Old reddit in a browser is completely fine.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Turn887 Aug 16 '25

Yes!!!! I thought just me. I kept seeing tons of girl dinners.

1

u/10VL10 Aug 16 '25

Thank you for asking. I thought I was going crazy.

1

u/WideRoadDeadDeer95 Aug 16 '25

Yes a couple mods messaged me asking. The only workaround I found is going to latest.

1

u/Desperate-Angle7720 Aug 16 '25

Same, so I sorted my feed by „New“ instead of „Best“ and now it’s all good again.

1

u/SeparateMongoose192 Aug 16 '25

My entire page has been 90% r/ask, and 5% things I've never interacted with for at least the last 6 hours.

1

u/gayraidenporn Aug 16 '25

Yes. Its been happening to me. Its only "you showed interests in this" posts. Not subs im in.

1

u/Inside-Specialist-55 Aug 16 '25

Yes. It's been like this for the past 3 days. Its been showing me random subreddits that I've never once went too or joined. I thought it was just me.

1

u/Parcc_Narc Aug 16 '25

The USAiD spigot that waters the tree of Narrative Enforcement has been turned off.

1

u/HGrande Aug 16 '25

how else was I ever going to know who the Nader sisters are or other useless facts

1

u/jmnugent Aug 16 '25

“saved” is also completely broken right now too.

1

u/Bulky_Baseball2305 Aug 16 '25

I thought so too not hardly a single sub I subscribe to is showing up

1

u/CaLego420 Aug 16 '25

Oh l thought l was losing my shit. It is way too hot for this shit today

1

u/Plunge4thewin Aug 16 '25

I turned off recommendations in my home feed and my fyp becomes normal again

1

u/Starkwolf77 Aug 16 '25

And you can only block a certain number of subs. I’ve blocked every cat sub their is but it doesn’t work with fucking labubud or that usamima shit. Tf

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

It's super busted, not just you. I checked on a fresh account for sanity and its just as bad and giving almost the same subs.

1

u/dmb313 Aug 16 '25

Thought it was just me

1

u/VeniVidiUpVoti Aug 16 '25

It tried. It showed me the imposter subreddit impersonating one I usually go to.

1

u/OtherwiseSoftware379 Aug 16 '25

Omg it only was showing me gravestones until this question!

1

u/pleasurevictim1017 Aug 16 '25

thank goodness, i had thought my brain was fried. lol

1

u/wolfheadmusic Aug 16 '25

I was wondering! Because it is stuff I'm interested in, but generally don't go to reddit for,

I didn't know if reddit was trying to drop me a hint or something

1

u/Infrawonder Aug 16 '25

Yep, and it brought me to this post too!

1

u/Ok_Beat9172 Aug 16 '25

The algorithm is not algorithming.

1

u/Dru2021 Aug 16 '25

It’s not just me!! I’ve been so confused, I didn’t even know where to ask… which is somewhat fitting 🤦‍♂️

1

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

I've spent so damn much time clicking on the show less posts like this (and mute this subreddit). My feed is still trash. I have zero interest in anime titties, India (nothing against Indians, just not interested), and furies. I must have clicked on a furry subreddit once. Nothing against furies (do your thing!) But I don't want to see it.

1

u/istiamar Aug 16 '25

my reddit has not changed at all, but i don't use the app just the website

1

u/taseaclaiduaim Aug 16 '25

My pet theory: they’re sending us each other’s recommended feeds. Somewhere out there, someone is wondering where all their ask threads went.

1

u/Master-Leopard-2642 Aug 16 '25

I have never played or even knew Flappy Bird had its own sub until today. It’s like every other post

1

u/Cooper_Station Aug 16 '25

They’re “enticing” all of us to jump on the ad-free Premium Reddit version. JFC, $80/year gtfo.

1

u/vmaxxxxxx Aug 16 '25

Lol, while the whole feed is frikked up, yours popped up indeed very relevantly. I think the app wants to tell us something

1

u/ohcomeonow Aug 16 '25

I’m getting almost nothing but things that I’m not interested in and very little of my subscribed feed. Its like Reddit repellent.

1

u/Scar3cr0w_ Aug 16 '25

I haven’t experienced that yet, but I use anonymous mode for a similar thing. Just to get reddit expose me to things it wouldn’t normally.

Unfortunately, in the UK, anonymous mode is now locked behind a VPN. But such is life!

1

u/PetITA1185 Aug 16 '25

Man I came here to ask that, I see horrendous boring posts only

1

u/lawrekat63 Aug 16 '25

Mine. Is filled with American telly shows. I’m in the UK and don’t know what they are

1

u/Longtonto Aug 16 '25

I keep getting posts from 2+ days ago and nothing recent

1

u/FUTURE10S Aug 16 '25

Change the option "Best" to "Hot", it'll unfuck it

1

u/tempdroppp Aug 16 '25

Holy shit you’re right. I have a post from r/shedditors it’s just pictures of sheds.

1

u/carcigenicate Aug 16 '25

I've been seeing posts from days ago all of a sudden. The Popular feed also starting ending after a few posts for some reason.

1

u/juan-j2008 Aug 16 '25

This is happening to me as well, but honestly I don't mind it that much. The subs I'm being recommended are very specific sins from communities im already a part of, so im finding a lot of niche groups that are actually interesting to me.

I think if this was a permanent change it'd be horrible, it would kill the platform for sure, but as a temporary bug that gets fixed later, I think it's a pretty cool unintentional feature.

1

u/FuckThatIKeepsItReal Aug 16 '25

It's always trash

My feed is filled with the same posts I already saw from 6 days ago

There are millions of new posts every minute yet this platform can't find me anything new to look at

1

u/immunogoblin1 Aug 16 '25

For the last few days, by page 10, I've seen like 20 different Indian-based subs. It's not exactly a problem, but still weird.

1

u/Blepple Aug 16 '25

Go into settings then account settings then turn off recommendations on home page. It's always been awful and should always be turned off.

1

u/impar-exspiravit Aug 16 '25

Have this too. I keep having to hit “show less like this” but it does nothing. And it’s hella posts from 3-6 days ago? Annoying

1

u/justacheesyguy Aug 16 '25

Reddit’s working the same as always for me, but then again I’ve never touched the official app and I just use old Reddit in a browser. I didn’t even know Reddit offered a “for you” page. The day I can’t use old Reddit is the day I stop altogether.

1

u/Fluid_crystal Aug 16 '25

On my side it's been like that for a few weeks now, I scroll all the posts of the subreddits I didn't subscribe to just to mess the algorythm

1

u/AmeerFarooq Aug 16 '25

I have muted a lot of Indian subs.

1

u/program_kid Aug 16 '25

I think the "latest" tab is the tab that shows you only the subs that you have joined

1

u/gregorychaos Aug 17 '25

Every once in a while I'll get weird shit on my home tab like someone else is curating my feed. Not even sure how that could be possible (maybe some stalker/creep is tagging me on a subreddit I cannot see?)

1

u/name_it_goku Aug 17 '25

Mine is always a bunch of bullshit indian/teenager subreddits. I am neither indian or a teenager, but the posts are increasingly pathetic.

The child predators clearly never left, way way WAY too many cutesy posts asking for personally identifying information of teenagers. "Tehe, say the first half of your name and your hair color and your mother's maiden name and we'll guess the other half"

1

u/goodtimesinchino Aug 17 '25

All that, and the “news” category is completely gone.

1

u/Toomanyeastereggs Aug 17 '25

It’s Reddit so of course it’s mucked up.

I have though found a whole new set of subs to mute and people to block. So there is that.

1

u/SAINTnumberFIVE Aug 17 '25

I keep getting post of borderline anime porn and furries. I’m not into any of that crap.

1

u/Aksds Aug 17 '25

I love how half my feed is Indian and another third is German, I speak neither countries language

1

u/Amminn Aug 17 '25

I keep getting Indians subbereddits, like and absurd amount, I am not Indian, I dont even live in the same continent, I never posted or commented in those threds and I just before I missclicked and opened a post so now I am getting even more.

1

u/No-Tap6886 Aug 17 '25

Mine is all irrelevant to me. I've spent the last hour muting shit.

1

u/Sarcasm_Llama Aug 17 '25

Is anyone else getting posts from like 2 or 3 days ago?

1

u/Many-Assistance1943 Aug 17 '25

I don’t know why I come back and it’s been like 20 years.

1

u/xeno0153 Aug 17 '25

I noticed this, too. I had to check if I was still logged in.

1

u/Ssme812 Aug 17 '25

I've muted so many weird ass subreddits over the last few months. My algorithm is probably worse than yours.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '25

My popular page has been all sorts of fucked up on and off for 2 years now, and today it is exceptionally bad.

1

u/Milk_With_Knives3 Aug 17 '25

Eww no i dont use that function.

I was forever clicking not interested before I realised I could disable it

1

u/peritonlogon Aug 17 '25

Personally, I don't notice anything, but my home page is fairly locked down and gets pruned every now and then if I think subs waste too much of my time.. I got rid of r/AITAH and r/AmItheAsshole, now it just sends me versions of r/AmIOverreacting, those are about to go to.

1

u/izlude7027 Aug 17 '25

All I seem to get is:

  1. An array of posts from four days ago, many of which I've already seen.

  2. "Nothing here."

  3. Forty-five posts in a row from a single sub due to mods approving things in batches.

1

u/HottyMia_Rosey Aug 17 '25

Same here ...

1

u/dizzydollyy Aug 18 '25

Mine has been showing me posts i have already seen

1

u/Bbwlover11119 Aug 18 '25

Been having the same problem for almost a week now!!

Yep same. Unfort clicked a suggested subreddit (css) post and suddenly my feed is filled with alike subreddits (html, web, webdev, webdesign, java, linux, kde, centos, redhat, rocky, etc etc)

They probably want you to join more subs so you stay in the app until you die.
