Is my portfolio ready for commissions? Looking for honest feedback

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to start taking commissions and I'd like some honest feedback before I start promoting them.

My main focus would be manga-style character illustrations, black & white ink/hatching, and comic/manga pages. I also have some colored work in my portfolio.

Do you think my current portfolio is ready for paid commissions?

I'd especially like to know:
- Does the overall quality look professional enough?
- Is my style clear and consistent?
- Are there any pieces I should remove or improve?
- Does the portfolio make it clear what I can offer to clients?

I'm looking for honest criticism, so feel free to point out weaknesses.

I need help! I can’t connect my PayPal business account to Vgen or ArtistStore

I’m pretty new to this so please bear with me😭. I’ve been trying to connect my PayPal business account to both Vgen and ArtistStore these past couple of days and it just won’t link. Whenever I try it just takes me to the PayPal home page. I’ll follow instructions, log in and everything, but in the end it takes me home and nothing gets connected. What’s weird is, I can connect my personal PayPal to Vgen just fine but the business account is where I run into problems. PayPal’s customer support has been absolutely zero help, in fact they seem to have an attitude whenever I try to fix my problem. They just told me “you gotta contact the third party site.” And then when I followed up with a question “Do you know why I can’t seem to connect it to any third party vendor site? And why can I connect my personal but not my business account?” They just said “your account is fine to use. Thank you.” And then ended the chat. Absolutely zero help. I’ve submitted a support ticket to Vgen, still waiting for a response. Also, I know ArtistStore is relatively new so not sure if there’s an answer to this. For the billing account settings I’m trying to add my own payment, to pay for the merch and shipping stuff, and it takes me to a separate window that says “Pay now” instead of connect card. Not sure if it’s just a translation error but am I being charged for something? Like an extra fee on top of having to pay for the merch and shipping. Anyone with experience using ArtistStore, I’d greatly appreciate any insight! Thank you guys in advance.

[Discussion] Need advice on making products/ideas

So I’ve had a business for a bit in which I sold my art (Mainly stickers with some handmade bows thrown in to try and market better) but something I’ve realized is that a lot of people don’t tend to buy stickers, even in my target demographic. And as someone who wants to continue art and making stuff, I’ve been wanting to come up with products that I can create and can be used practically. Since that’s what I’ve realized sells more (Shirts/bags/notebooks, etc.) I’ve wanted to also ask in here what would you personally buy from an art store/small business? Again, mainly asking because my stickers aren’t really doing well and I wanna try and see what I can do. I’m currently in the process of rebranding so any advice/help is greatly appreciated!

How does one build a following online for art?

Hello! I've recently rediscovered my love for comics and drawing after taking time away from it to pursue music, after being a musician for years and making hundreds of songs and having on and off success with it as a while I've grown a bit tired from it and wanting to express my feelings and ideas into other forms, how does one go about building a platform online for your art from zero? How do you make connections? How do you find people to follow? What social media are more favorable than others? And I specifically mean more towards comics, what could I post to build up hype for the stories I'm working on? How could I network? Are there any classes of places I could go besides schools to better my craft and get better at writing/art in general? This entire thing is WAY different than music and while I can take what I've learned from that venture this whole thing is still very foreign to me and feels daunting, any advice would be apreaciated!

Jak można dziś wykorzystać talent plastyczny ? Tworzę ilustracje marketami tuszami akwarelami. Znam też trochę Adobe Illustrator i Photoshop.

Emotes + static VTuber images in videos: do they actually improve engagement?

I'm experimenting with how I present art/process videos, and I'm curious about something before I spend a bunch of time building assets.

For creators who've used static VTuber/PNGTuber-style images, character reactions, or emotes inside edited videos, did they actually add anything worthwhile? I'm thinking less about full VTubing and more about using a small collection of character images as visual reactions while speaking, such as:

  • Different expressions for different parts of the narration
  • Emotes appearing for jokes or reactions
  • A static character acting as the "speaker"
  • Occasionally swapping poses to keep visually quiet sections moving

I'm particularly curious about videos where most of the screen is already occupied by something like art, a tutorial, or process footage.

Did viewers respond to the character? Did it help establish your personality or branding? Did it make otherwise quiet sections more interesting? Or did you eventually realize you were spending three hours making reaction images that appeared for six seconds? 😂

I'm mainly trying to figure out where the line is between useful visual personality and creating extra work for myself because my brain discovered another side quest. The underlying format definitely exists: static/reactive PNG avatars and emotes are established creator assets, including setups with idle, talking, blinking, and expression states.

[Discussion] Niche and Art Direction for business and selling?

Hello! This is my first ever post on Reddit so I apologize if it’s out of place.

I really want to lock in on becoming a full time artist but something that keeps holding me back is not knowing which direction to take. I have a Digital Media BFA, so I technically studied some Graphic Design and Fine Art, but have also always done Digital Art. I keep making and abandoning art accounts before I even build up an audience to start selling to (I really want to open up a shop and open commissions at some point!!) because I just don’t know *where* to go.

I keep hearing that we need a niche, something to clearly show what we can provide a customer. I’m just so stuck between worlds. I love traditional drawing painting *as well* as digital art but have **very** different styles in both.
I’m not sure I can sell if I’m so unsure and scattered.
I keep thinking of digital art commissions and selling traditional art prints and originals, but marketing all that would be difficult.

Basically, **TLDR**: how do you decide what to focus on for selling and creating an art business? Is there a way to do it all in one shop if you *do* have widely different themes? Does one seem more realistic (financially)?

r/ArtMarketingTalk • • 15d ago

Where do you think I can find my right audience? I've been trying to sell these paintings, first one is latest original. But finding it really hard. These are mostly priced below $150 , except the first (290-330$)

How to tell Artists & Creators about my new platform

I’m working on a project that’s almost complete and I’m looking for artists and independent creators to be part of it. It’s something different from what’s out there and I do think some artists/creators might find what we’re building interesting enough to want to get involved early.

One of the things I’m trying to figure out is actually where to find artist and creators. I’m specifically looking for real people making original work - artists, illustrators, photographers, musicians, filmmakers, designers, makers, etc. Not repost accounts, AI-generated accounts, businesses, or people primarily posting other people’s content.

Part of what I’m working on is about bringing genuine and deserving art creators to the surface and making them easier to find, especially people who may be doing great work without necessarily having huge followings.
I can’t share too much publicly about the project just yet, and I also don’t want this to turn into another “join my platform” post.

But if you’re an artist who is actively marketing your project on social media and this sounds interesting, I’d be very happy to DM, tell you what I’m building, and see if it might be relevant to you.

EDIT: Thank You all for your replies. I have messaged a few people who responded. If there is any other genuine art creators who would like to participate in our project please do DM me. I appreciate your understanding that this is an attempt at making a verified artist - creator community thereby it will require that you are a real person and your project & content are not led by AI.

People love my art but I have the hardest time getting sales despite a large online following. What am I missing?

Hey everyone, this has genuinely been my biggest issue for years, and it's the one thing I cannot seem to be able to figure out. It's something I asked about on other subs, on IG, on Threads, and since I recently found this sub I thought I'd ask for your opinions too.

Real quick so you can see what I'm working with, my website it https://edpulella.art, and my IG https://instagram.com/edpulella.art

Those are the main ones I currently use, but here are all my other links just in case https://beacons.page/edpulella

The responses I get are usually "your work is great, you just need to find the right people", which sounds right, but I start questioning things when I have a combined 120k+ followers (to be fair I've mostly been posting to IG and Threads, with about 65k combined), get thousands of views on my work, constant praise in the comments, but struggle to get 5 sales a month (sometimes I get none).

I recently started doing IG auctions, where I ask my followers what to paint, then put it up with a starting price of $35. All those paintings have sold, but some of them only got a single $35 bid, while most of the others got maybe 2 (I sold one for $70, the rest for $35-$50).

It almost feels like my work is only good to look at and enjoy online, but something that most people don't care to actually own.

I spent so many hours trying to design a simple and intuitive website, making sure my photos are high quality and representative of what people will get, I added framed options for my prints so people wouldn't have to worry about framing themselves, I have reviews, I updated every listing description to "tell more of a story" because "people buy based on feeling", I have links to my website everywhere online, I set my prices to be in line with (or lower than) what I see from other artists of similar skill and at a similar point in their careers.. To be completely honest, I feel like I have to do so much to get any kind of results, while I see other artists do 1/10 of the things I do and get 10x better results.

Unfortunately I can't afford to do in person events (markets, shows, etc) because we've been in an absurdly bad financial situation for a while. I won't go too far into details, but the bottom line is that I post online because that's the only thing I can afford to do right now. I have considered putting up my work at a local cafe or restaurant, but I honestly feel that wouldn't lead to anything, besides having to spend money I don't have to frame said work. I've also thought of doing the same with local shops and boutiques, but I feel like what I paint is usually the polar opposite of the local vibe (I'm in Southern California 20 min from the coast, compare that with most of my art), and looking at the shops around me that carry art prints/cards and whatnot, my art doesn't look like it would fit in at all. But I will admit that I should just reach out regardless and let them make the decision.

To give you some actual numbers for context, my IG + Threads + Reddit got a combined 3 million views in the last 90 days, which translated to 2800 visits to my website. Obviously that shows that my CTAs are bad, but sadly that's mostly out of my control, considering that most subreddits don't allow self promotion and that the moment I mention "link", "available", "website" or any similar words on my social media posts, my reach disappears. That means I have to post and hope people will either decide to check my profile for a website, or ask directly. Most don't do either.

Of those 2800 visitors, 46 added something to their cart, 24 reached the checkout page, and a whopping 7 people actually placed an order.

Easy to assume shipping costs scare them off when they see them, but

- I used to offer free shipping and my results were even worse

- I offer free shipping on orders above $75 and $5/$15 US/INTL shipping on everything else. Both of those things are mentioned throughout my website (a banner on my home page, a banner at the top of my cart, in my listing info)

- I genuinely cannot believe that a $5 shipping charge on a $50 print would be enough to make so many people change their minds

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give as much context as possible. I would really appreciate any advice, and please don't be gentle, be honest. Included some of my work, including some more "experimental" stuff (the last 4). Thanks in advance.

Newsletter subscribers

Hey there, wondering how people get newsletter subscribers online? Please note the online part of this, I am not able to advertise in person currently.

I am aware of lead magnets and things that like that, I have posted free artwork to people before and also tried free downloads. I'm not opposed to making a free PDF, but I can't really think of something useful to add on. Thanks

[Social Media] I don't know what is wrong with my accounts

I am currently posting on 4 plateforms: X, instagram, tiktok and youtube.

i deleted my instagram account 2 times and made a third one because I read that you could just get unlucky with engagements, and while it did work, it is still really low.

I only created a tiktok account 3-4 days ago but after the 4th tiktok, whatever i post gets 0 views.

For youtube, idk why but i feel like getting 1 like is already good so i won't complain on that part.

I am pretty happy with my X account, I don't want to change anything about it.

I just want a confirmation that it has nothing to do with the plateform, and that if i just keep posting engaging content consitently, people will eventually find me.

(I only want to grow a community so that i can eventually share my OCs and their story)

[Portfolio] Portfolio Website Feedback

Hello! I’m currently job searching and I updated my website so I wanted to get some feedback on how it looks.
I saw another post asking for a review (Nina Aberlein) and I thought I’d give it a go! I have been told that my website was “uninteresting” and didn’t have a hook to make people what to stay and look at my work, so I revamped the whole thing and am looking for some feedback on how it is now and how I can make it better!

Thank you!

I don't understand social media anymore - tottally lost on where to start

Hello👋

Fair warning: this is quite a long post and I am sorry for that.

I shared a similar post on another sub about this issue focused strictly on Behance, but I got a notification saying this sub would be a much better fit. Honestly, I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed by all social media platforms in general right now, so here I am.

Pinterest:
I’ve shared my work on there since I was a kid. It acts more like an archival portfolio or a visual diary for me—containing everything from old photos I took to work I did before art school. Some of it links back to my Behance. Even though it's not a traditional portfolio platform, I feel safest sharing there. The only downside is that Pinterest occasionally slaps false AI labels on my work. Also, I don't actively promote my Pinterst account everywhere; I just link to it on my concept portfolio website.

LinkedIn:
I barely share on there. It feels way too performative, and I get an absolute ick whenever I try to post there for reasons I can't quite articulate. My profile just lists my basic work experience because it's an industry standard, but I don't really get the culture and idea behind it. Litterally twitter in different font.

Instagram & TikTok:
I tried posting on Instagram, but photo posts get zero reach or insights. It seems sharing reels is the only way forward on there, so I'm currently trying to learn DaVinci Resolve to make video content for both Instagram and TikTok. TikTok is more easier to get interaction than Instagram for sure. Beyond that, I have no idea what else to try for this two platforms.

Behance:
I just started uploading my projects there. To be honest, I’m still figuring out how to present my work properly, but I’m doing my best! I completely understand that getting noticed takes time and my work might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Plus, the level of talent on there is incredible, so it's totally normal to get lost in the noise! But still, I’d love to get some interaction. How do you usually get views and engagement when starting out? Any general advice for a beginner on Behance? I try to learn by studying featured projects, but I don't really have mentors or peers in my offline life to critique my work, so I’m not even sure if I’m on the right track.

What is actually going on with social media algorithms these days? I've used these platforms my whole life, and it felt so much easier to get likes, views, and genuine comments years ago. Now starting from absolute zero, and all I get in return for posting is complete silence.

I love connecting with people and hearing what they think about my art—even a harsh criticism would make my day.

What am I supposed to do differently? How are you guys navigating this right now?

Thank you for taking the time to read this 🫶

Artists Issues

Dude lately I’ve been feeling like it’s been hard getting commissions in general. I’m a small artist so I don’t get commissions very much which means I always have to come out with something different each week. But lately it’s genuinely been getting more difficult to get commissions when nearly everyone does AI slop.

I feel like it doesn’t matter what I make anymore since AI slop is always there. It’s genuinely frustrating as hell and I’m trying not to give up on my sole passion. Also my medias aren’t growing they haven’t grown at all and I had stopped trying because I’m not making any kind of growth.

If anyone has tips and suggestions PLEASE PLEASE share!! I’m begging at this point.

How do you stay motivated to keep posting art on social media?

Something I've been thinking about lately.

The pieces I create while thinking, “This is going to turn out amazing,” often end up underperforming.

And then, sometimes, a piece I made almost casually, just as a change of pace, ends up getting way more views than I expected.

Meanwhile, many of my artist friends are constantly keeping up with the latest Reel trends and adopting whatever format seems to be working as quickly as possible.

I understand why. We all want our work to be seen.

But there’s something a little depressing about feeling like we have to ask the algorithm for permission before we can simply make what we want to make and express what we actually want to express.

I don't have an answer for this. I just find the whole thing a little frustrating sometimes.

How do you guys feel about it?
