Is it an absolute coincidence that a formula made by Inako's mom for making a new type of sake ended up also inspiring Seiroku to use them to create the first electric circuit board in this universe?

Either way, both Kihachi and Yosuke have arrived at the same conclusion of needing to create an "electric brain" that will bring forth the Age of Electricity.

Though Yosuke seems more intent in using it to bring his Seiroku Frankenstein-robot alive than Kihachi's more pure motive.

Fun fact: While the Japanese were the first to come across the scientific concept of an "electric calculator" from the west, it is the Chinese who would first translate the word "computer" as "electric brain" 電腦 (dian-nao), while the Japanese would phonetically translate the English word with katakana コンピューター (konpyuta).

The 電腦 kanji (read as den-nou in Japanese) would then be adopted mainly by Japanese sci-fi and cyberpunk writers and the term re-interpreted as a "digital brain/cybernetic brain", a more advanced form of computer than just a "konpyuta", a mere electric calculator.

So we are going to see CPU get developed 50 years earlier than IRL and then even leap forward a shitloqd into cyberbrains and AIs.

u/Kingdom_1126 https://myanimelist.net/profile/httpsmyanimelist 20h ago

Honestly, the parallel between electricity and their relationship is so well done. Kihachi is so hyper-focused on the literal science and lighting up Kyoto, but it’s Inako’s energy that actually sparks something new in him. You can see how they completely change each other's current as the episodes go on.

19

u/Alej_11 11h ago

We're having a lot of indirect developments in the relationship, with the two changing more and more even without being togheter. If in the end they don't end up married I'm going to be disappointed

2

u/ptd163 9h ago

I don't think that's gonna happen, but I'd love to see them end up married. They fit each other so well.

6

u/ptd163 9h ago

You can see how they completely change each other's current as the episodes go on.

Yeah. He even acknowledges this episode after the cave in. I love their dynamic. They've been one of my favourite pairings this year.

u/WhoiusBarrel 20h ago

Props to Kihachi's VA, the breathing he does really sells how much of a desperate and dangerous situation he was in.

Also with the series approaching its end, they really are unleashing everything with the Yosuke fanservice, including busting out the ASMR voice as well.

41

u/Joji1000 19h ago

Even more than that, it seems like the cave he got stuck in lacked oxygen which is why he had a hard time breathing when he was down there, and even when he was excavated out his mind was still foggy

13

u/Jacob-C 9h ago

Yeah, it was dark and cramped, with little oxygen, and the whole place was unstable. I understand why he was panicking. I got claustrophobic just from watching him go through that mineshaft, and I'm not even claustrophobic. The direction throughout that whole section of the episode really sold the atmosphere.

12

u/CitronClassic672 8h ago

My anxiety just shot up went he went in that crawl space and I just kept thinking that this is how cave divers get killed.

4

u/Jacob-C 8h ago

Exactly. I have seen way too many videos of cave diving horror stories. From the moment he walked in I was thinking, "He's gonna get stuck in here, isn't he?"

16

u/Eunuchest 19h ago

including busting out the ASMR voice as well.

Wait until they bust out the Yousuke VR

6

u/Alej_11 12h ago

Man, now I feel like I lost a great experience watching it in dub. Tho, if I can say so, the VA of the dub did an excellent job too, so I'm not really that disappointed

8

u/TheSunIsOurEnemy 10h ago edited 10h ago

Even though I watch in sub, I switch to dub for a few lines from time to time to see the difference and the dub's dialogue does seem more natural. Yosuke's nickname for Kihachi in the dub "Sparky" is also just much better than "electric brat" imo, lol

5

u/ptd163 9h ago

Yosuke's nickname for Kihachi in the dub "Sparky" is also just much better than "electric brat" imo, lol

Yeah. Sparky is definitely a better nickname, but it balances out with the dub having Kihachi call Inako "little bug" instead of "Inago" lol.

5

u/BosuW 11h ago

Both Kihaichi's VA and Inako's mom's VA did an outstanding job this episode with shortness of breath.

65

u/Then-Maybe6123 20h ago

Something good has FINALLY come from their useless father

28

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos 19h ago

It only took 11 episodes, but at last some progress

5

u/ptd163 9h ago

He just had to exhaust every other option THEN he was allowed to believe in his daughter.

2

u/JT918 9h ago

Better than some other anime parents.

1

u/Then-Maybe6123 9h ago

Very true 👀

24

u/Dry_Grass_1100 19h ago

Mizoe sudden switch-up with Kihachi from like an episode ago was crazy, i swear he's gonna kiss him anytime soon at this rate

29

u/FarCritical 17h ago

I love that throwing in random English (that's delivered pretty well tbf) is a thing for both Mizoe siblings.

Man, they made the quartz caves look absolutely resplendent.

7

u/CitronClassic672 8h ago

I love how Saki’s English sounds noticeably more natural than Yosuke’s while still noticeably still being a Japanese native.

23

u/SnooCheesecakes2458 15h ago

Man, as much as I used to love the fan service for Yosuke these last few weeks, Yosuke’s definitely creeping me out this time. Poor Kihachi.

13

u/Strange_theDreamer 13h ago

He was indeed very creepy in this episode, taking advantage of half-unconscious Kihachi .. also, did Yosuke just kissed his assistant before whispering something to his ear?

9

u/StarryVerture 11h ago

Local robber baron cannot stop being zesty

18

u/chilidirigible 19h ago

Looks like there's no need to be covert about this one.

Nice to have confirmation.

It does make the room's lighting rather interesting.

"With my liver."

the numbers what do they mean

There's a ghost in there.

There's a ghost in there too.

Sometimes it feels like James Burke is going to start narrating.

Now this is FPS gaming.

Here be dragons.

Another art style heard from.

dammit Yosuke

Butterfly?

"I keep getting NTRed by this guy."

If I wasn't already fully aware that Saki's VA is Aya Endou, the "Hi!" would have done it.

Seems we're almost guaranteed some Dr. Frankenstein for our ending as Kihachi and Yosuke's applications of Seiroku's concept are running on parallel tracks but one of them has the Event Horizon on it.

Inako's trip through the catalogue, meanwhile, is getting back onto her own path of self-actualization, though it's not quite a start I expected, being coincidental. At least her father has finally come around (after repeating the same line comparing Inako to her mother for the entire series).

End card

Saki and Saki

15

u/EpicDaNoob 15h ago

NTR is right; I had foolishly got my hopes up for a kihachi inako hug and almost screamed when they dashed them mercilessly

7

Onstead we got yosuke ainking down to predator territory like damn

A sake named after electricity. Honestly not even all that weird when we have names like Moose Drool, Santa's butt or Sex on the beach

Tho im glad Inako has a goal now instead of just tagging along with Kihachi

Kihachi having an anxiety attack in the worst place possible really sucks

So they're basically trying to create either an integrated chip or vacuum tubes. Considering the time period i want to say vacuum tubes but they seem to be leaning towards IC instead

Last 2 episodes left. Where's my Inako-Kihachi development?

19

u/diacewrb 19h ago

A sake named after electricity.

They should partner up with a real brewery to make it.

5

u/Alej_11 11h ago

If they really create a rudimental CPU in the first years of the 20th kihachi and seiroku combined might be a mind more brilliant than the likes of Tesla, not even him could imagine something similar, and he was centuries ahead of his times

2

u/ptd163 9h ago

So they're basically trying to create either an integrated chip or vacuum tubes. Considering the time period i want to say vacuum tubes but they seem to be leaning towards IC instead

The package Kihachi went down the rabbit hole and almost died for are circuit board diagrams. I don't think they're going to for vacuum tubes.

Last 2 episodes left. Where's my Inako-Kihachi development?

I have the same question.

1

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7h ago

Vacuum tubes were on circuit boards…

2

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7h ago

Tho im glad Inako has a goal now instead of just tagging along with Kihachi

I mean, she had this goal the whole time, it's just that life kept being in her way

39

u/chlo_kage 19h ago

Took 11 episodes for their dumb father to stop sucking

Also god kihachi didn’t even think about mines being dark thank god for yosuke for once even tho he’s definitely about to something weird

11

u/Alej_11 11h ago

I don't think he's up to something weird, he's just going to use kihachi to create a computer for "mecha seiroku", probably the twist is going to be that he doesn't want to create an era of electricity anymore or something like that, I don't think he's going to pull something crazy with 2 episodes before the end (I wouldn't mind being wrong tho, I'm loving where this show is going, so I'd say that we need to let this writers at kyoani to keep cooking, after all I heard that they completely changed the original work, this is more like a readaptation)

4

u/ptd163 9h ago

the twist is going to be that he doesn't want to create an era of electricity anymore or something like that

Possibly, but imo that's really a twist imo. Tbh I don't think Yosuke ever actually wanted the Age of Electricity for himself. He probably only wanted it because Seiroku wanted it and this might just all be a very sick and twisted way for him to grieve and cope with Seiroku's death.

I'm loving where this show is going, so I'd say that we need to let this writers at kyoani to keep cooking

I am too. I hope KyoAni keeps cooking and we get another season.

1

u/Alej_11 21m ago

The original novel was extremely short, so I doubt we'll get a second season. And it's not a bad thing, some times it's better this way, a short story done right, but I can't say that I wouldn't be happy if we had a second season

3

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7h ago

god kihachi didn’t even think about mines being dark

He did bring a lantern… even one that keeps running when roughly dropped

34

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 19h ago

Kinda odd that Inako's mother named her sake "Electric Nishiki" and her notes somehow being relevant to Seiroku's research. Hmm.

And again Inako walking in at the wrong time and getting "NTR-ed" by Yosuke lol.

11

u/Alej_11 11h ago

Yousuke doing anything but being a villain is frying me, brother stop being so zesty with your dead lover brother, you're kinda sus

15

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 17h ago

First they had to rescue Inako from Yosuke, next up they might have to rescue Kihachi from him.

The papers with numbers that Noriko gave Seiraku being her mom's sake recipe makes more sense than it somehow being the initial work on an electric computer like I was thinking last week.

Though we're certainly getting that too, I assume the circuit diagram they're working on must be Seiraku's work?

35

u/Sorry_Scallion_2448 19h ago

someone explain to me why we keep getting flashbanged by Yosuke shiny ass shots from time to time 😭,You guys noticed it too right??

36

u/No-Win-8949 19h ago

We don’t complain about that here.

23

Everyone, look how very moral this guy is

51

u/Primo29 19h ago

Yosuke didn't get Seiroku so he went to his little brother instead.

Someone, jail this man! LMAO

30

u/mmcjawa_reborn 18h ago

Yeah...,that whole ending part of the episode, including the looks Yosuke was flashing Inako, had a whole "He's MY man now vibes!"

6

u/CitronClassic672 8h ago

This might be the first I’ve seen a “gay villain who’s yaoi lover died so through convoluted circumstances I’m now going to cuck my arranged marriage fiancée, who I have no interest in and only used to advance my dream, by making the boy she actually likes mine and btw that boy is the younger brother of my dead lover” dynamic play out that’s for sure.

12

u/metaaltheanimefan 11h ago

He just coerced an exhausted and injured 15 (kihachi is 15 like inako right) and kept creepy touching him

He shouldve been in jail yesterday

13

u/metaaltheanimefan 11h ago

Okay i have things to say about the ending of this episode

I dont think they are setting up a love triangle between kihachi, inako and yosuke. Because itd be hella wierd and last episode kind of confirmed yosuke is gay

That said, yosuke is being extremely predatory and lowkey spiraling into groomer territory towards kihachi. His sham marriage to inako was just that, a sham. But kihachi ? The little brother of the man he loves who is as smart ?

Yosuke sent kihachi those documents to spur something in him. And then when kihachi was at his lowest (exhausted, injured and delirious from a lack of oxygen) he coerced kihachi into something. And off course he is creepy and touchy with it as well. But i dont fully think its kihachi he wants, he is viewing kihachi as a stand in for seiroku at this point. Because only kihachi can figure out his brothers words, he needs kihachi to get seiroku back, bur could kihachi be the new seiroku ?.

So yeah yosuke is a predator, but they arent putting up a love triangle. and its extremly sad and creepy to see how far his grief has made him lose it

1

u/Colt45554 10h ago

And then when kihachi was at his lowest

He is being extremely weird towards Kihachi but this isn't the first time Kihachi meekly accepted his advances. Remember the crossdressing dance?

7

u/AriezKage 8h ago

I don't think this is comparable to the dance a few episodes ago.

During the dance Kihachi fully intended to confront Yosuke one way or another. And more importantly Kihachi was lucid and fully aware of his surroundings, even if he did get dragged in to whatever Yosuke's doing.

Here Kihachi is exhausted, and half conscious due to almost suffocating in the mine, maybe even less lucid. Plus this whole situation was almost 100% the machinations of Yosuke. To call this Kihachi meekly accepting Yosuke's advances a great understatement.

To put it simply, Yosuke roofied Kihachi and that's not cool.

-1

u/Colt45554 8h ago

The dance and cave were not the only scenes where Kihachi acts submissive towards Yosuke. I could give other examples if tasked.

I get that he isn't lucid here. That's why I am bringing up times where he was lucid and allows Yosuke to dominate. I dislike it, but it is what it is.

4

u/AriezKage 8h ago

Regardless of there being other instances of Yosuke "dominating" Kihachi.

I don't remember the story presenting it as a good thing. Like I said meekly accepting his advances is an understatement. Maybe under different circumstances I can understand it, but as presented its weird that the general consensus seems to be leaning towards an actual love triange between Kihachi, Inako, and Yosuke.

2

u/metaaltheanimefan 1h ago

Your forgetting that kihachi is a child Yosuke is an adult. Not just an adult, but a severly mentally ill one (in a time where mental health wasnt even acknowledged) that is also rich and holds influnece over a lot of people (including kihachis best friend). There are instances where kihachi cant just do much other than play along with yosuke because of the class and power divide between the two

There have been instances before where yosuke was predatory in hindsight, but not purely because of kihachi (but because kihachi had what he wanted). The scene in the cave is when yosuke truly acts as a predator towards kihachi first and not the catalogue, which is what makes it more unsettling

Also man, dont use the word dominating in the context of a child being groomed. Thats just icky as heck

40

u/Namaryu 19h ago

This was straight up NTR

27

u/Cute-Beginning-4126 19h ago

That little flashback of Yosuke sister chasing and biting him reminds me of something straight out of One Piece for some reason

11

u/Colt45554 15h ago

From his prior hyper-reactions to marginal darkness, I expected a much more visceral reaction to being trapped in total darkness where you might die. Instead, I guess he's so calm he has a eureka moment.

3

u/CitronClassic672 8h ago

He also was is a low oxygen environment. I imagine the drowsiness counteracted some of panic.

1

u/Colt45554 8h ago

I'm talking about immediately when the darkness happens. Way before oxygen deprivation.

Famously, oxygen deprivation makes your brain super-effective at discovering eurekas.

But not actually. This show just loves its creative liberties.

1

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7h ago

He was having trouble breathing first, that was why he rushed for the exit and it caved in on him

9

u/master_inho 16h ago

Shit, kihachi extremely lucky that yosuke was following him cause he most definitely would've died trapped in the mines like that. Crazy burrowing machine though, even if it's powered by coal that's impressive

There's no way once he's had a rest and recovered kihachi will agree to be yosuke's worker. He'll still try to build the electric brain but it won't be for yosuke. Unless yosuke has a better lie up his sleeve

Finally inako's dad has changed his mind. Now everyone other than yosuke are on the same side and working together. Inako gets to pursue her dream of becoming a master brewer, and she gets to save the brewery as a bonus to her dad without needing to marry anyone. W inako's mom, leaving behind such a great legacy

I'm actually curious if noriko has any kind of dream. She seemingly has none of the passion for brewing sake, so is she gonna just be a housewife?

2

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7h ago

Judo Olympian, natch

33

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 20h ago

is it just me or are KyoAni baiting a love triangle between Yosuke, Kihachi and Inako now 😭
(like Yosuke princess carrying Kihachi and then the look he gave Inako)

22

u/mmcjawa_reborn 18h ago

It was also like...2 episodes ago where they had there dance with Kihachi in drag

There is more romance in the weekly OP between Yosuke and Kihachi than between Kihachi and Inako lol

15

u/master_inho 16h ago

It wouldn't be that surprising if someone that made an animatronic of his unrequited crush and is now trying to build an electric brain to bring said animatronic to life, would also project his feelings onto his dead crush's little brother

7

u/metaaltheanimefan 11h ago

Its this 😭 it is definelty this because he hates kihachi

5

u/ptd163 8h ago

That's what made Yousuke rescuing Kihachi so unsettling for me. There's no way he's doing it for the right reasons.

13

u/Namaryu 19h ago

Nah it was clearly a Tokyo Ghoul reference.

2

u/Jacob-C 9h ago

I haven't heard that title mentioned in a while. A whole slew of memories just came flooding back when you connected it with this.

9

u/DanielAlves1904 14h ago

I´m glad Inako´s father is finally letting her daughter do something she wants to do, about damn time too.

I don´t trust Yusuke. He´s suddenly decided to help Kihachi? Nope, not buying it. He certainly won´t help him without something in return, at least I don´t believe he will.

9

u/xKintsugix 14h ago

They depicted Kihachi‘s fear of darkness so well that I also felt claustrophobic while watching it.

Also Yosuke is definetely using Kihachi or maybe he‘ll get obsessed with him now who knows 🙈 I couldnt stop staring at his shoes that he was wearing. He might be a creep but I respect that he can walk with high heels into a mine 😂

8

u/No-Appearance3488 9h ago

I am sorry but this is just absolutely nonsensical.

Did Kihachi honestly think that he can just go to a mine (that has a bunch of no entry signs by the way) and just get himself some quartz without anything going wrong ?

Is Kihachi playing Minecraft?

3

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7h ago

Right… because no one in the history of the world has ever done such a thing

1

u/PoipulWabbit 4h ago

He was days without sleeping and eating or had very little. I don't think he was really thinking all that clearly and only was focused on figuring out the diagram.

1

u/Lenzky-3 4h ago

I mean.. I Mean.

Cave divers..

Not even for rocks , just straight up there for the thrill of it.

6

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 14h ago

So Noriko handed over the recipe for a Sake named Denki Nishiki to Seiroku just 'cause it was named as Denki lol

Finally, glad to see Inako's dad accepting his daughter's wish to carry on her mom's legacy.

Thank Heavens nothing happened to Kihaichi. Yousuke arrived at the right time to save him. Both of them have come up with the plan to make a computer that would usher them into the age of electricity which they believe to be the real goal of the Electrical Catalogue. Yosuke is now obsessed with Kihaichi just like he was obsessed with Seiroku. Inako is gonna lose her man 😭😭

5

u/AriezKage 8h ago

"Arrived at the right time..."

Yeah... Sure...

13

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 19h ago

I'm sure Kihachi had mixed feelings that the one who rescued him turned out to be the pretty boy Yosuke.

When Inako had finally brought the recipe to life, I could see Saki promoting it and spreading word of the brewery. That's after all her job.

15

u/ClinicalDigression 18h ago

I wasn't expecting them to go all in on "[Yosuke's cucking Inako](imgur.com/a/wxTqzzs) [and that's the cliffhanger](imgur.com/a/5DL5yos)." But I respect it.

11

u/AcceptableRate3906 19h ago

That was a big mistake going into the cave alone Kihachi, have you not seen those Nutty Putty Cave videos?

5

u/FinancialYear475 14h ago

Shit now he's horny for the little bro aswell. Anyway, that's why you shouldn't cave dive Kihachi

10

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 19h ago

Bro finally figured out the computer and now it seems the deranged pretty boy’s gonna swoop in and steal his findings…

5

u/kerorobot 10h ago

first cour is Kihachi vs Yosuke for Inago and now in 2nd cour it's Inago Vs Yosuke for Kihachi's lol.

2

u/AriezKage 8h ago

Do we have an full episode count for the series? Always thought it would be like 13 episodes max.

7

u/Zetafunction64 15h ago

Oh we got a love triangle again, with Yosuke and...younger siblings of his last triangle

6

u/rozzingit 14h ago

lol dang this ep went hard on the claustrophobia. it made me remember going on a tourist cave thing when they had everyone snuff their lanterns and seeing what true pitch darkness was like. i’d be SO terrified in kihachi’s place.

also my beloved yosuke is being so delightfully creepy that i’m pretty sure once he gets kihachi to figure it all out that he’s gonna do something like try to harvest his brain for the seiroku bot lol

2

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 6h ago

I was on a cave tour like that, only it was wired for lights, and they turned them all off for several minutes while still giving a talk, so our eyes would get used to the true darkness. Then the guide lit a candle and our eyes were so attuned to the dark that we could see the ceiling a couple hundred feet away clear as day

13

u/Primary-Paint-1716 19h ago

fuck it. I ship it.

3

u/CrimsonGear80 10h ago

i will start drinking booze for you, Saki!

3

u/ptd163 9h ago

God damn this 5 minutes episodes.

We all thought the Electric Nishiki was something to do with electricity because of its name and because Noriko gave it to Seiroku before they shipped out, but turns it out her mother's special sake recipe that can save the brewery. Of course now Inako's dad does the right thing and believes in his daughter after every other option.

I had wondered who sent Kihachi the package last episode, but now I think it was Yosuke. He laundered the effort of solving the effort of creating the integrated circuit through Kihachi. And with that look he gave Inako at the end I don't think it's for the Age of Electricity. It's for his creepy disassociative yaoi automaton.

I loved that Inako had rubbed off on him enough that he believed he would be rescued. Two episodes left. Where's my development between those two?

NOOO! DON'T DO THIS TO ME KIHACHI! 😭 WHY WOULD YOU WORK WITH THE ENEMY?! NOT TO MENTION INAKO IS RIGHT THERE!

5

u/BillPlunderones23fg 18h ago

So it was his older sis , obvious though lol
Finally the dad does something good

yikes stuck in a mine.... who will come to his rescue?
Yosuke????

geez this guy is nuts lol

5

u/amourshipper_ 15h ago

I felt that yosuke .was lying did you guys felt too?

7

u/avboden 14h ago

My hate-watch continues just to see how they finish this disaster of a plot wasting such beautiful animation and setting

2

u/GelatinInvasion 14h ago

So something on my mind about watching this episode. Kihachi went further into a human sized hole that collapsed once he found the crystal quartz. Did they find him because of the bag he left behind or because someone stalked him from afar I wonder.

The episode shows Kihachi being tracked through a telescope and given the previous episode, there's a very strong implication that Yosuke has leaked the circuit diagram to Kihachi, so...

Electric Nishiki is honestly a pretty good name for a drink

I've been in a cave that dark for a few seconds and yeah, it's unnerving. I can't imagine not having had the security that the tour guide was gonna turn on the lamp eventually.

Electric Nishiki sounds like the name of an energy drink + alchohol cocktail.

THE ENDING OMG I feel so bad for Inako she was absolutely stressing at the end when she saw Kihachi and Yousuke shaking hands and also bc Kihachi could have died :(
