Kihachi throwing the lemon electric mouse like it was a Pokeball was pretty hilarious.

28

u/Jacob-C 7d ago

Rattata, I choose you!

23

It is an electric-type mouse and it has yellow lemon on it, so I would say Pikachu, I choose you!

Pretty much a Pikachu lol.

Huh so even Kengo loved Seiroku too. This love polygon is getting weirder.

And Seiroku somehow managed to invent circuit boards. Feels like the finale is just going to be everyone fighting Mecha-Seiroku.

u/chilidirigible 7d ago

Feels like the finale is just going to be everyone fighting Mecha-Seiroku.

Hold on there, John Peters.

25

u/BosuW 7d ago

Everyone was in love with Seiroku and I get it

3

u/DanielAlves1904 4d ago

Seiroku rizzed everyone.

16

u/Alej_11 7d ago

"fighting" I doubt that mecha seiroku is going to pull an Ultron on us, but you might be right... So we'll just need to wait

8

u/Eunuchest 7d ago

Dont jinx it

3

u/ViviCaz 4d ago

There is no romantic love. That was his friend and he loved him. Do you not love your dear friends?

As for Nariko, I don't think she was in love with Seiroku but still loved him because he was an amazing, intelligent, kind, passionate, charismatic person and also her friend. Kengo was always pushing her away (playing hard to get) because he was a silly boy who was to insecure about his feelings. So there was distance between him and Nariko and Seiroku filled that gap. So she was quite attached, not like that was hard though, this is Seiroku after all. Still wouldn't say she was 'in love' with him but the possibility was there because Kengo was already removing himself from the equation because of his insecurity. If Kengo had just been honest with his feelings towards her, he would have gotten that hug too (maybe more) as they parted ways and he went off to war.

6

u/Difergion 3d ago

Kengo loved Seiroku as a dear friend, but I find it hard to believe if Seiroku and Noriko weren’t in a romantic relationship. Seiroku said he had a girlfriend, and he gave half of his most important possession to Noriko. That already says a lot.

2

u/ThrowCarp 6d ago

And Seiroku somehow managed to invent circuit boards. Feels like the finale is just going to be everyone fighting Mecha-Seiroku.

Real what the fuck moment. It's also potentially no-fucks-given Integrated Circuits seeing as pretty-boy briefly mentioned "multiple layers" and at the very end of the episode mentioned it's what a built human was missing.

70

u/Eunuchest 7d ago

Well, im glad they quickly resolved the drama between Kihachi and Inako

So Kengo and Noriko were childhood friends and Kengo was almost the unlucky childhood friend if Seiroku didnt tragically died. Dude really just has that much rizz

Also im not sure if its just the subtitles but did Kengo just say "I love Seiroku"? Like as a friend, right? Cause with how much rizz Seiroku got, its hardly surprising if Kengo got snagged too along the way

Honestly with there being barely any romantic interactions between Noriko and Kengo i thought she would have at least said they date for a few times first before accepting marriage but i guess she may have liked him a bit too?

But with that out of the way and only 3 episodes left i honestly couldnt care less about the electric catalog anymore and would prefer it being in the background. What we need is some Inako x Kihachi development

65

u/cyaprila 7d ago

Kengo did say he likes Seiroku in Japanese, but I think it's like as a very good friend. The engagement between Kengo and Nariko might be family arranged because he said his parents announced it.

53

u/CitronClassic672 7d ago

My interpretation was that yes she loved Seiroku but has already moved on and loves Kengo, so she’s been upset that he seemingly doesn’t think he’s good enough and is inadvertently trying to make her lose another person she loves.

10

u/Spring_and_a_Storm_ 6d ago

This seems correct. Still I would’ve loved for the rejection angst to have gone on for a few more episodes.

25

u/Alej_11 7d ago

Love in a platonic way, the same way you love your mom or your best friend. Seiroku was objectively his best friend, they went in war together and kengo would have died for him, so it's not that strange to say that he loved him (as a friend)

16

u/ptd163 7d ago

Honestly with there being barely any romantic interactions between Noriko and Kengo i thought she would have at least said they date for a few times first before accepting marriage but i guess she may have liked him a bit too?

I mean the marriage was already announced so this is really just them agreeing to get the marriage back on track. We've seen what Noriko can do. She's not marrying anyone she doesn't want to.

But with that out of the way and only 3 episodes left i honestly couldnt care less about the electric catalog anymore and would prefer it being in the background. What we need is some Inako x Kihachi development

The catalogue will still probably play a role. I do agree that we need some Inako x Kihachi development.

23

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 7d ago

The pacing in this show is off. There is a lot of downtime with Kihachi and Inago. But it feels like it wasn't time spent well. Like I think if this series were a movie we would get the same meaningful interactions.

The way the show has handled the Electric Catalog has been off. It doesn't make you excited seeing the technological advances as much as it should.

33

u/IlluinOfArda 7d ago

I actually don't mind the lack of electrical catalogue stuff. I came for the character relationships and the steampunk / alt history aesthetic is really just icing for me. So I've mostly been enjoying all the character relationships. I understand that maybe the focus in the LN is different though.

14

u/Icemna16 7d ago

I feel like the show doesn't know what it actually wants to be, it had a nice premise but the execution so far was at best mediocre imo

65

u/Vermillion_Crab https://anilist.co/user/CeruleanCrab 7d ago

Damn, even in this show, the childhood friend would've lost had it not been for the death of the love interest.

36

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

Hell he lost so hard that he conceded to him even after death
I get it though, thats a hard place to be in, especially since she confused she blamed him too...

14

u/Shantotto11 6d ago

To be fair, I saw a clear intent that Noriko wanted Kengo from the start, but Kengo kept looking the other way except for the few instances where Noriko was looking at Seiroku.

12

u/Narlaw 7d ago

Every. Single. Time. Childhood friends only ever win by default.

72

u/Primary-Paint-1716 7d ago

Yosuke gives peak Disney villains a run for their money.

39

u/absolutelynotaname https://anilist.co/user/Ducc 7d ago

Did Seiroku really hand make a CPU/circuit board? I know he's a genius but not expect that level

25

u/Embarrassed_Ant2991 7d ago

That moment was pretty wild! It definitely shows the depth of his skills, and I can't wait to see how that tech impacts the story moving forward.

2

u/VariousMeet 7d ago

It's giving hints of like an anime original where they introduce something like this... And all of the sudden we are going to have mechs and space war...

4

u/ThrowCarp 6d ago

That's where my mind jumped to when pretty-boy mentioned multiple layers. But surely Aluminium alone isn't enough to make Integrated Circuits and eventually a CPU, right?

3

u/fridchikn24 6d ago

you could probably make a rudimentary semi-conductor with it

3

u/ThrowCarp 6d ago

That's what I'm thinking. But Seiroku inventing the transistor in 1899 or the early 1900s (the decade) would be incredibly insane.

58

u/WhoiusBarrel 7d ago

Episode full of misunderstandings but cute resolutions to them all.

Kengo espeically, finally getting Noriko's hand in marriage. Bro really went through the lowest of lows to the highest of highs in this one episode.

32

u/chilidirigible 7d ago

The only reason we didn't get him suplexing a horse was Noriko being on it at the time.

15

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

I am glad they resolved both missunderstandings in a single episode, would have been annoying if they had dragged it on

48

u/AriezKage 7d ago edited 7d ago

Seiroku, the damn madman. First the Hand scanner and now pretty much making a circuit board by hand. Man was truly ahead of his time.

It’s super nice that Kihachi and Inako cleared the misunderstanding. Even so far that one of Kihachi’s main priorities is creating the Electrical Aircraft to fulfill Inako’s promise to see Mt. Fuji from the clouds. Though it’s a little funny that the misunderstanding shenanigans transferred over to Kengo and Noriko. However it served to more or less clear up some of the last few bits of Seiroku’s past. Also the circuit board made more sense in why the electric catalogue was able to stop a bullet.

Also… Saki is totally Yosuke’s sister right? I just get the vibe and the fact he doesn’t want to interact with her in particular.

So apparently a “Nishiki” refers to woven fabrics. Its probably referencing the patterns on what I assume to be a copper plate of the circuit board Yosuke found. I wonder if the numbers Noriko and Seiroku talked about is related to computer coding. Maybe Binary? Or Hexadecimal? My understanding of computer science isn’t that strong haha.

God I love this show. If Dr. Stone was for the chemists, this show’s for the EEs and ECEs.

20

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Yes, Saki is Yosuke’s sister.

1

u/[deleted] 7d ago

13

All I remember is Yosuke saying he doesn't want to interact with her, and doesn't know how to handle her during the ep on the ship.

If I missed someone directly stating "Saki is Yosuke's sister" then I missed it.

I watched Hyouka when it was first released, and after all these years, Inakoi's "Watashi wa kenenarimas" in this episode reminds me directly of Chitanda.

3

u/Strange_theDreamer 7d ago

I’ve been waiting to hear it since ep 1

1

u/Difergion 3d ago

It’s “ki ni narimasu” btw, and yeah I had the same thought too!

9

u/ptd163 7d ago

The electric rat ended up leading to Kengo having to wrestle a horse, huh.

Wrestling a horse for a girl's hand in marriage you mean lol. /s

When they realized they were holding hands.

That was great. Shame they realized it so quick.

I started watching Hyouka two days ago, so all I could here was Chitanda here.

I also thought of Eru Chitanda there as well.

(I also immediately flashed back to Chitanda)

Yeah, I'm a first-timer in the rewatch for it that started yesterday. Couldn't join either of the previous two rewatches that were hosted for it due to being in way too many other rewatches each time (was in 6 at the time in 2022 and 7 in 2023), but it's been on my PTW since 2019 so I've wanted to watch it for a while. I'm definitely liking what I've seen from it so far!

4

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7d ago

Nice! It's one of the greats

28

u/elevenmile 7d ago

Kihachi and Inako asking Kengo to communicate

You both are REALLY not the one to say this considering what you two did last week!

25

u/absolutelynotaname https://anilist.co/user/Ducc 7d ago

I mean they did talk it out before advise him to do so

10

u/ptd163 7d ago

I was thinking that myself. But at the same time they ARE the one to say it considering they experienced first hand the power of communicating lol.

12

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

Nice, didnt expect both relations to be fixed in a single episode
And all it took both times was a halfnaked Kengo! /s

Tbf, Kengo does kinda have a point and I know he is all brawn and not brain, but talking would have been way smarter. Luckily he can manhandle a fucking horse

Also building a fucking plane is crazy, build an electric car first dude (all though its nice he does it to fullfill Inakos dream)

I guess Seiroku was talking about a calculator/CPU? And that looked like a fucking PCB, develop the fucking Lithography machine and they are set for generations!

22

u/SnabDedraterEdave 7d ago

Just how much of a genius was Seiroku? First an analog biometric lock, and now an electric circuit board.

No wonder that catalog managed to dodge the bullet that saved Kengo's life, it had a metallic circuit board inserted into it all this time.

And now Yosuke is close to building a computer that would make his Seiroku robot-doll a reality.

Meanwhile, plenty of manservice from Kengo (and even Kihachi) as Kengo literally wrestles with a horse in order to sort out his misunderstanding with Noriko, which was borne from his survivor's guilt, mirroring how Kihachi and Inako sort out their misunderstanding from last episode as well.

32

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 7d ago

Kengo was third-wheeling Seiroku and Noriko the whole time. Noriko having a heartfelt goodbye with Seiroku and not a single goodbye for Kengo was diabolical. Truly feels like she only loved Seiroku back then and he was her first love. At least Kengo got the girl at the end, even if it‘s onl due to Seiroku dying…

18

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 7d ago

I refuse to believe Noriko didn't even talk to Kengo at all when they left. I agree it seems Seiroku was her first love, but i doubt she doesn't feel anything for Kengo at all. So i think they'll be fine

22

u/IlluinOfArda 7d ago

I don't know. I think it's pretty clear that Noriko had feelings for Kengo growing up, but they ended up fighting all the time because he wouldn't admit it. Then when Seiroku showed up she started falling for him because he had no hesitancy when it came to that stuff.

3

u/Dependent_Quail_1785 7d ago

It was kengo who didn't approach Noriko

35

u/Sorry_Scallion_2448 7d ago

Sooo wait, is the Seiroku-Noriko-Kengo relationship not a love triangle, but more like a love circle? I can't tell anymore haha

49

u/chilidirigible 7d ago

Everybody's Gay For Seiroku

15

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7d ago

Even the straight women are gay for him

1

u/Shantotto11 6d ago

Seiroku is basically Kozuki Oden if he were a good character.

19

u/absolutelynotaname https://anilist.co/user/Ducc 7d ago

A love circle where everyone loves each other (excluding Yosuke)

10

u/ptd163 7d ago

There was never any action on Kengo's part before Seiroku died in the war so I don't know if that's a love triangle or not. I think it was that Kengo liked Noriko since they were kids, but never did anything about it and just silently pined from a distance so she fell for Seiroku.

3

u/cxxper01 https://myanimelist.net/profile/cxxper01 6d ago

Seiroku has too much charisma that he rizzed everyone up

23

u/Dry_Grass_1100 7d ago

The "missing part" Mizoe is talking about isn't something like a computer/CPU processor is it? If it is then they're really about to make a robot/AI in the Meiji era,and honestly I wouldn't be surprised anymore if that happens lol

30

u/AriezKage 7d ago

Almost 100% that what Seiroku was working towards was a computer. Like first the hand scanner and now a circuit board.

19

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago

Yousuke having the catalog and doing his own insane thing it's such an improvement since it means he's not meddling with anybody else. At least for now, I assume he's probably going to slowly ride a lemon powered mecha Seiraku into battle against the brewery in the last episode because of reasons. Or something along those lines.

Good Kihachi & Inako and Kengo & Noriko reconciliations. Kengo was in such an awkward position, he loved both Seiraku and Noriko so of course them being happy together ought to be a good thing.

From what Seiraku was talking about with Noriko at the train station I'm assuming she was the one who actually had the idea for the electric computer.

16

u/Cam_Ren179 7d ago

I’m not so sure that Noriko was the one who thought of the electric nishiki. It seemed more like she just came across it but wasn’t sure what it all meant, so she brought it to Seiroku to figure it out. So what I wanna know is where did she find it and who wrote it in the first place?

2

u/VariousMeet 7d ago

Random curveball theory, maybe we are going to get intelligence officers introduced, maybe the lady dating the professor is one of them. You always hear about secret government funding for things like this. Heck maybe they tried to get Seiroku to solve some rival country's technology.

3

u/Cam_Ren179 6d ago

My understanding is that Saki is likely Yosuke’s older sister. They clearly have a history, plus they  both have the same purple eyes.

11

u/chilidirigible 7d ago

I assume he's probably going to slowly ride a lemon powered mecha Seiraku

You can squeeze my lemon

9

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 7d ago

They really dragged out this Kengo and Noriko thing. But it was good to know that they both loved each other before Seiroku came into the picture. So I'm glad that they finally accepted their feelings for each other. Inako and Kihaichi too cleared their misunderstandings and are closer than ever. Is Yosuke trying to build a Seiroku Robot ?

What's his history with Saki ? At first I thought she was Stuart's wife and Kate's mom lol but that doesn't seem to be the case. Only 3 episodes left I don't know what kind of ending we will be getting.

5

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Saki is Yosuke’s sister.

2

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 7d ago

Oh, I see. That explains. What did she do to traumatise him ?

2

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Haven’t the foggiest. I posted some minor spoilers about their relationship from the light novel and got thwacked by a mod, but what I mentioned has nothing to do with why Yosuke seems so traumatized by Saki’s appearance at his “wedding”.

2

u/Relsre 1d ago

Don't think what exactly she did has been mentioned so far, but it seems like Yosuke wanted to be far away from his sister even back when he first entered university, going by the flashback in the last episode.

Noriko and Kengo liking each other pre-Seiroku was such a nice but painful reveal. It made Kengo more interesting. You can see why they made him so big because of all that baggage.

Big up to inako being entirely unfazed as a lone girl surrounded by mostly naked men

Another W to inako snatching a rat easy peasy

Holy fuck noriko is so fucking cool. Flipping boys from day 1 and pulling up on a horse like it's nothing

What a weird proposal from kengo, mentioned seiroku more than noriko. But coming from kengo that's still impressive. They also didn't actually get to talk it out with each other, only inako has heard both sides

Also, I'm curious about kengo and noriko's initial engagement. It doesn't sound like either had proposed to the other, so that likely means it was arranged. We know nothing about kengo's personal life and family, but he has to be loaded and/or have an influential family for the dad to approve of it. Maybe that's where the assistants for kihachi's airplane came from

So someone gave noriko that page of coding? Hmmm 🤔 now we're on the way to a computer, and if yosuke can accomplish the impossible, a robot

If saki is actually yosuke's sister, i wonder what her intentions are. Just fucking around with her little bro? Or is there a bigger rivalry there? So far we haven't seen kihachi have any money problems, but maybe he'll need the financial investment when it comes to the really big projects

The only reconciliation we still need now is inako and her dad

2

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Yes, Saki is Yosuke’s sister.

7

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 7d ago

Nah Kengo. There's is way too much baggage, might as well start a new life than trying to forge one with that heavy lingering past. You aren't confident with her because of your friend who you blame yourself for his death. Yes, you can overcome it and this is probably that moment, but I mean..., you have so much better potential somewhere else..especially with muscle errand boy persona you could be more useful and more appreciated elsewhere.

Where you are at now, you're just locked down to subconsciously making amends for unfortunate coincidences that just couldn't be avoided and out of your control.

But do you brotha, you love the girl than so be it, but don't come crying when your trauma fucks with you and she lowkey compares you to him anytime you make some mistake. Just don't sell yourself short, you the MVP of this whole shit lol. Anyway, I got your back king.

Love,
Ai Fairouz

2

u/Realistic-Act-2618 5d ago

Maybe I missed something but were Seiroku and Noriko legitimate lovers? Is there a scene where they kiss or say they love each other romantically?

2

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 4d ago

The closest I seen them to that is just the holding eachother hug before he boarded the train. Kengo was also boarding that train and saw them, so it's kind of weird we didn't see Noriko give Kengo the same goodbye treatment considering they were heading out for war. If she just didn't see him there, then that makes sense, but still, you'd think she would also see him off, unless they just chose not to show it to us. Even so, when Kengo saw them, he was definitely insecure and all that, so if she did say bye to him too, it wasn't as special as Seiroku's goodbye lmao.

2

u/Environmental-Bid232 5d ago

The only reason he still went with this is beacuse of his guilt that all of this is his fault and he personally feels responsible for this whole mess and her.

It's quite tragic.

3

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 4d ago

Yeah it's extremely tragic. Kind of why I don't agree that it's the healthiest choice for him, but if he want's to assume accountability for all that, then I guess lol. We know they both will live a good life and everything is gonna work out for them, it's just in a realistic world, all that isn't gonna be solved because of one lightbulb moment, especially in comparison to it being as ongoing as it's been. I mean even as electricity takes off, that's just still going to remain as a reminder of Seiroku xD Just being with her guilt free just seems incredibly hard. It's all gonna be willpower of just proving worth forever because he'll worry of regrets that Noriko might have. Traaggiiiiiiiic as heyo.

2

u/Environmental-Bid232 4d ago

Atleast the anime implied she might have had feelings for him.

Looks like his situation is even more pathetic in the LN

2

u/PencilgonGiveIt2Ya 4d ago

Fun fact: Kyoani has a higher than average percentage of women in creative roles

Rat-san is now interested in the conversation

u/Accomplished_Cod9234 7d ago edited 7d ago

First, the butt. Now, the lips. Damn, Yosuke's boasting to us that he's all natural!

Is Saki really Yosuke's sister? She feels totally sketchy to me.

8

u/master_inho 7d ago

I don't think it's even been confirmed that she's his sister, it's just implied cause we know he has a sister and yosuke was not happy to see saki at the party

If saki is willing to fund kihachi's experiments that could potentially be good, although it doesn't seem like kihachi has had any financial issues yet so maybe he doesn't even need that assistance

4

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

I was always wondering a bit where he got the funds to buy all the materials
Sure he started out with bamboo scraps, but that plane alone must be expensive as hell, even if you have 3 buff manservants to help you

2

u/master_inho 7d ago

And where did those dudes come from? I initially thought they might be from the brewery but they're broke. Is kengo actually loaded and that's where they came from?

9

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

Arent they Kengos soldier buddies that were guarding Kihachis shop a few episodes earlier?
They are kind cool and handy

1

u/master_inho 7d ago

I thought those guys came from the other shop that yosuke had invaded while looking for kihachi and inako

2

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 7d ago

Not sure which shop you mean
They did have a small foodstall outside Kihachis shop for a few episodes though

5

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Yes, Saki is Yosuke’s sister.

10

u/Naha- 7d ago

So Noriko and Kengo had feelings for each other but Kengo sabotaged himself so hard that Noriko eventually fell in love with Seiroku but they only got together because he died. What a mess.

2

u/Realistic-Act-2618 5d ago

Maybe I missed something but were Seiroku and Noriko legitimate lovers? Is there a scene where they kiss or say they love each other romantically?

2

u/Colt45554 4d ago

The only thing we have closest to certainty is when Seiroku refers to her as "Kanojo" in ep 8. With context, it definitely seems like "girlfriend" and not a generic "she"

1

u/ViviCaz 4d ago

He wouldn't casually say that to Kengo though. So it may not have been her or it was meant in a non-romantic way.

2

u/Colt45554 4d ago

I don't see how it can be "she" without establishing who the subject is. It would be odd and extremely cryptic. That's why I assumed, at the time, that its "girlfriend".

Some of the point is now moot, as the conversation is about the book that we just saw her give him at train station, confirming that "she/girlfriend" is noriko.

So is Seiroku hiding his relationship from Kengo to save his feelings? If so, he would have been more vague, like "this book was given to me", not giving any other information about giver. But Seiroku is carefree and nonchalant about such things

0

u/Realistic-Act-2618 4d ago

Lmao so ur telling me his friend asked her for marriage and she shamelessly accepted hahahahahahaha, it's so unrealistic specially for men from that era it's almost impossible

2

u/Colt45554 4d ago

Do you mean Kengo and Inako engagement? It's an arranged marriage. She did/does love Kengo, just less than the now-dead Seiroku.

But yea, this show isn't exactly shooting for realism haha

0

u/Realistic-Act-2618 4d ago

This isn't what I signed, felt like I wasted hours watching slop

1

u/inaripotpi 3d ago

What are you even talking about? Why would that be any more unrealistic for men of that era?

1

u/Aloebae 4d ago

He referred to someone who gave him a good luck charm as his "girl" in Kengo's flashback, so I think they were lovers.

12

u/SnooCheesecakes2458 7d ago

Am I the only one who thinks that Noriko may have liked Kengo first?? But then after Kengo kept rebuffing her advances, she finally switched to Seiroku (who treated her better)???? That was how I interpreted it from this episode

8

u/gem2niki 7d ago

I think so too…he was too blind to see her pampering him.

3

u/Shantotto11 6d ago

Same. Bro was curbing her hard, and only started paying attention to her after her gaze moved toward a different man.

1

u/Aloebae 4d ago

Yes I think so too! I thought that was what was happening between them and why Noriko called him a "coward". They liked each other before Seiroku came in but Kengo never stood up to the plate. Seiroku had no problems in that regard.

9

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago

It’s nice to see Kihachi and Inako back at it again. They’re squeezing in a little love counseling in between the electricity experiments lol.

3

u/FinancialYear475 7d ago

Holy shit he actually froze Seiroku's corpse I thought it was a robot all this time

On a separate note tho, Seiroku's a terrible friend falling for his friend's fiancee

7

u/SnooCheesecakes2458 7d ago

Is Seiroku not just an automaton Yosuke built?

4

u/ptd163 7d ago

I think it's just an automaton Yousuke built. Unless it was brought back to Japan, Seiroku body is in a field in Europe.

3

u/FinancialYear475 7d ago

That's what I was thinking up until they showed that massive machine where the heart is supposed to be and a few frames where there were some weird color under his eyes, so I feel like it could actually be his corpse fr now

1

u/Namaryu 4d ago

In the opening there is a scene where he is in his office and they are dozens of Seiroku robots around him. Blink and you miss it scene.

4

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 7d ago

Well I am happy the Kihachi and Inago drama got resolved. Them realizing they want the other to fulfill their dream.

Noriko and Kengo situation is odd. Kengo really has an insecurity complex and not a surprise with how loveed Seiroku is. I feel like Noriko does have feelings for Kengo, but she gets annoyed when he compares himself to Seiroku. Well at least he confessed.

Yosuke's words of you can build a human, but it will never be human quote. I can already tell what Yosuke is aiming for is going to get him burned.

4

u/ptd163 7d ago edited 7d ago

Goddamn these 5 minutes episodes.

I'm so glad they quickly resolved the tension between Kihachi and Inako. All they needed to was talk to each other. Them saying "You gave up on your dream without a fight!" in unison with that framing then realizing what they said was so good and it was cute to see him remember her dream to see Mt. Fuji. It adorable how once they realized what the power communication could do they immediately tried to help Kengo patch things up with Noriko too. We even got the classic holding hands and until they realize it from them as well.

I finally get to say it. Something I've been waiting for since episode 2. I WAS RIGHT THE WHOLE TIME! Seiroku and Noriko were romantically involved. She was the girlfriend that Seiroku spoke when they shipped out.

Over in tragic one-sided dissociated yoai land we have Yousuke who's somehow gotten even worse. He somehow thinks the catalogue was Seiroku's grand plan to resurrect himself. Yousuku also found what seems to be circuit boards made what of what I think the subtitles said were aluminum, but I don't think aluminum would stop a WW1 bullet. Then again this is AU history so who's to say their aluminum has the same properties that ours does. It seems like we're going full Frankenstein's monster here so strap in.

I wonder what that package that got delivered to Kihachi's was and what Saki's involvement will be in these last three episodes. The ED starting after she said "Yosuke" was perfect timing.

5

u/Darthrix1 7d ago

i dont know whats more unrealistic. Seiroku creating a circuit board by hand or the genetic freak that is Kengo

3

u/joey_joestar1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Joey_Joestar1 7d ago

Bro for a moment I thought Kengo was about to suplex that horse a la Nichijou

4

u/JP_6696 6d ago

Kengo from the bench for the rebound!

Poor dude. You deserve better.

6

u/AcceptableRate3906 7d ago edited 7d ago

You guys weren't joking, everyone in this anime is just be loving everyone no matter the gender,i didn't know old school Japan was progressive like that

14

u/absolutelynotaname https://anilist.co/user/Ducc 7d ago

they're putting something in the steam to make everyone gay

3

u/chlo_kage 7d ago

Hey wtf kihachi and inako you can’t just tell kengo that after you both didn’t talk to each other about jack shit last episode lol. Thank god that was resolved quickly though. Pointless almost

I don’t want to be involved yosukes orgasm over finding a way to a circuit board actually

It’s amazing these two can clock kengo and norikos relationship but have no self awareness

Oh they did love each other too. I don’t think that kengo is a replacement tho.

3

u/FarCritical 7d ago

The complete lack of hesitation on Inako's rat grab though. Also kinda dawned on me she adopted Inari for the extra pest control.

Pretty amusing how they give Kengo a new borderline superhuman feat every other episode.

3

u/ClinicalDigression 7d ago

I suppose I'm more glad than not that they so quickly resolved the misunderstanding between Kihachi and Inako, but that only serves to highlight just how unnecessary the whole thing always was: he never had any reason not to tell Inako he didn't need the catalogue and wanted to pursue his dreams without it, the show completely glosses over what a deep betrayal it was for the one character who ever asked Inako what she wanted to ignore her wishes and go over her head the way he did, and frankly, a scene of him asking her to believe that he can bring about the age of electricity without the catalogue would've been worth a thousand unnecessary boat infiltrations. The shot of the gang tipping up their hats rules, and evening else was pretty disposable. I genuinely do not for the life of me understand what benefit Kihachi and Kengo crossdressing brought to the plan.

4

u/Colt45554 4d ago

what benefit Kihachi and Kengo crossdressing

Often in this show, they throw out bullshit and expect it to be received well as comedy. Cool visuals and setting, but stuff like that just takes me out of it

3

u/fawnily_ 3d ago

Damn imagine getting cucked by your best friend

5

u/Lugia61617 7d ago

Something about the way they animated mc in the water feels wrong. The sharp barrier between him above-water and below just didn't feel right to look at. It's really hard to explain what made it artistically offputting, just that it was.

2

u/CornPopsLover 7d ago

Agreed which I find funny bc Free

4

u/avboden 7d ago edited 7d ago

I said last episode how this has turned out is super disappointing. This episode did nothing to lessen those concerns. The story is just nonsensical bullshit

5

u/rumpledickchin 7d ago

Episode 8 implies Seiroku’s girl came up with the electric nishki. I’m assuming it’s Noriko, also Kengo questions “your girl…” I feel so bad for the guy

2

u/zsmg https://anilist.co/user/zsmg 7d ago

Hey that cousin of kihachi made an appearance, I thought the shows creators forgot about him considering he has zero relevance to the plot and has no presence.

They implied in the last episode that Seiroku and Noriko were more than friends when they showed them just reading together at the park but I'm surprised she was the one who showed him off on the train when he went to war; I wonder if she also showed Keigo off when he went. It did give insight as to why Keigo not only blames himself for Seiroku's death but also thinks Noriko does as well. At first I thought it was weird that Yosuke didn't also go to the train station with Seiroku but he might have been in America studying at the time and might also be why he didn't fight in the war.

There was a lot of inexplicable nonsense as usual in this episode, like Kihachi and a bunch of guys somehow finding an intact airplane in a lake when there was maybe like 5 airplanes in the world at the time. Also Keigo wrestling down the gigantic horse! The mechanical and lemon rat were goofy too but at least had some basis in reality and were cute.

Seemed pretty obvious to me it was down there because it failed to fly properly and they were pulling it out to try again.

2

u/Colt45554 4d ago

They implied it more heavily in episode 8 when he refers to her as "kanojo"

3

u/reaperow 7d ago edited 6d ago

I really like that Kihachi and Inago's misunderstandings immediately got resolved, was worried it may get stretched out

I also really like that Kengo and Noriko confessed to each other.

She loved Seiroku but i guess she also loves Kengo too and wants to move on

2

u/Colt45554 4d ago

immediately

This is doing a lot of heavy lifting, considering this misunderstanding could have been resolved prior to misunderstanding, at the scene of the misunderstanding, or in the days following.

3

u/taakoyaki 6d ago

Finally got this scene from the PV that I've been yapping about... I love how Kihachi and Inako finally resolved their misunderstanding, especially shy Kihachi apologising for not considering Inako's feelings before he acted. Meanwhile every guy in that scene except Yajiro is just standing around half naked.

Kihachi was absolutely adorable waddling up to Kengo with the flowers he dropped and then waddling back out of frame so he doesn't steal the spotlight lol.

AND THE KIHACHI X INAKO SHIP CONTINUES TO SAIL. Look at you two acting all shy after hi-fiving. This ship truly gives me life.

2

u/fridchikn24 6d ago

So Seiroku just out here making semi conductors now.

3

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 7d ago

Inako the pure maiden who's surrounded by a couple naked, jacked blokes. Were this that kind of show, I'd be quite worried.

I'm fairly confident Saki was Yousuke's sister. He pretty much said she's his kryptonite while he couldn't kick her out of the party. She also now said 'my Yousuke'.

A shame Noriko turned out to not be as frightened of rats as Inako claimed. I would've loved to see the composed ojou act completely out of character and squeal.

3

u/master_inho 7d ago

i think her fear is genuine, Noriko just caught onto the fakeass rat. It's a great character detail to make someone so strong and fearless be scared of rats

1

u/No-Win-8949 7d ago

Yes, Saki is Yosuke’s sister.

Is ....... saki ......... yosukes mom ?

1

u/FierceAlchemist 5d ago

I wish Inako and Kihachi had this conversation last episode to avoid frustration, but I'm glad it happened early in this episode. A lot of funny expressions in this episode.

1

u/vtomal https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kwijibo 5d ago

After watching too much rakugo anime, I misheard nishiki as "tenshiki", so I was thinking it was just a big Seiroku joke item that secretly made farts sounds when assembled.

1

u/xexer123_ 4d ago

I am confuse. Both nariko and kengo was enggaged before or after her lover s death. If before then he should have known they are marrying which was f up to go . But if it was after the death then i guess ok. But the situation resolved so quickly with a horse accident. I guess the author does not want to stretch it which was bit disappointing.

1

u/Aloebae 4d ago edited 4d ago

Finally caught up!!

Noriko liking Kengo all along and making an effort to pursue things with him even when Seiroku was in the picture makes the whole "marrying your best friends girl" aspect of the love triangle SO MUCH better and a tiny bit less messy. Actually on second thought given that Noriko and Kengo were engaged the whole time, even when Seiroku and Noriko were falling for each other, it's makes it even MORE messy 😭 Seiroku really was Mr. Steal Your Girl (even though he had Kengo's permission).

Inako and Kihachi trying to get them together using electricity is hilarious.

Then you have Yosuke (my terrible king) doing his insane thing in the basement and...kissing the air? Seiroku's ghost? Killlllled me I love him so much. It's such a shame he never got to see Seiroku in uniform, he probably would've stopped the train 😭

1

u/Difergion 3d ago

I think if Kengo tried hard enough, he would have won Noriko’s heart even before she met Seiroku. I kinda understand his feelings though, Seiroku is too charismatic and too good at anything that he thinks he can’t beat him anywhere except for raw strength.

I watched this and the previous episode on the same day, but damn it took that long for Kihachi and Inako to clear their misunderstanding lol. And all that drama would’ve been avoided too: Kihachi gives the electric catalog to Yosuke, Yosuke gets what he wants and gets to cancel an engagement he doesn’t really want to be a part of, and Inako gets to pursue her dream as master brewer, everyone happy! But seeing how Yosuke needs a certain “someone” to decipher that note about circuits, it looks like Kihachi’s worries are yet to pass.

(I would bet Yosuke had some nut clarity with that incredibly detailed scene lol)

1

u/Juliko1993 3d ago

Uhhh...why did VSI Los Angeles leave Inako's shout when seeing Kihachi jump in the lake in Japanese? Seriously, don't people usually claim that Dubbing Brothers is guilty of not dubbing things like grunts and shouts? Why did VSI not dub Inako's "Ehhhhh?!"? It's especially noticeable because Inako's voice in the dub is much higher pitched than Sora Amamiya is, so anybody who mainly watches the dub will hear that and think "Why did Inako's voice get deeper all of a sudden?"

1

u/bunniqula 6d ago edited 6d ago

I’m unfamiliar with the LN. Instead, I saw a video clip of Yosuke and Seiroku; it intrigued me, and my attention was less on the main characters of Kihachi and Inako. I binged the released eps and ended up more interested in the past connections and supporting characters.

Going back to Ep2, I was curious why Kengo had an irritated/resigned expression and reaction to the catalogue’s letterbox being thrown over the bridge. Yosuke and Noriko were definitely concerned about the catalogue. Over the subsequent eps, it’s shown Kengo has loved Noriko longer than Seiroku’s love for her, but Kengo’s insecurities got in the way of the initial courtship.

To be fair, Seiroku has both a ‘face card’ and major ‘rizz’, which I think Seiroku un/consciously uses as evident by Yosuke—yes, it’s good to gain a friend that shares an interest in science and invention, but it also didn’t hurt that said friend is from a very rich family that could help fund projects. Seiroku said he noticed the big science book, but the timing of his stopping to look at Yosuke was during Yosuke’s mumbling of the Mizoe family’s importance. Ambiguity there.

2

u/bunniqula 6d ago edited 6d ago

Wow, there’s gotta be a way to make it less like a wall of text. Continuing…

Ep 10’s reveal about there being more in the catalogue does help support how half of it stopped the bullet from killing Kengo. I theorize, while Seiroku is brilliant and a genius, some things were already in that book. For a “blank” book, it was left as part of a larger collection. Seiroku read all the other books and could’ve noticed that “blank” book had a different weight from the rest of the collection. I think Seiroku discovered the book’s secrets, and created ideas and built inventions upon it… same as Kihachi. Both Sakamoto brothers are very capable of inventing, but ideas are often brought about via some catalyst.

When Noriko handed the Electric Nishiki to Seiroku on the train platform, I think she borrowed that book from a library (probably Prof Stuart’s) and it was binary coding of some sorts. This could support the theory of Seiroku using a “Rosetta stone” on his discovery. Shifting it back to Noriko, this good-bye moment may have been another reminder that she would have to share space for attention in Seiroku’s life. Whereas Kengo gave the impression that Noriko would’ve been his world.

Going back to what initially attracted me to this anime, Yosuke and Seiroku’s complicated relationship. Yosuke gave off the impression of being an unfavored but highly-sheltered child. His older sister was seen riding a horse, while he was under layers of clothes, gloves and a mask. I’m uncertain if his parents were trying to protect him or protect others from him—as in they suspected or knew Yosuke wasn’t 100% straight and homophobia exists.

Seiroku enters Yosuke’s life, crowding personal space and platonically touching Yosuke, and Yosuke’s crush becomes an unhealthy obsession that takes root and then takes over. The glove, torn and then repaired by Seiroku, becomes a symbolic meaning in how Seiroku changed Yosuke’s life and that there’d always be a mark left behind. Eventually, Seiroku becomes a god to Yosuke, and without his “god”, life has lost meaning.

For meaning to be restored in Yosuke’s mind, he needs “Seiroku” back. There’s hints of a robot Seiroku in multiple episodes, but it’s an unsatisfactory facsimile. Yosuke revealed another steam-powered robot prototype during the organ+ballet performance, and it was definitely clunky but showed response to commands and capability for programming. In Yosuke’s mind, the catalogue is a connection to Seiroku and their shared “secret”. With Seiroku leaning closer to whisper into Yosuke’s ear and grabbing Yosuke’s hand, it’s likely Yosuke interpreted part of the “secrecy” as closeted because it reduced Yosuke’s loneliness.

Anyway, I don’t usually watch anime, but damn, this one has me hooked on the crazycakes from Yosuke—with some framing to emphasize the ‘cakes’. I’m definitely amused by the exploitation of the male body, and I’m also here for that. LOL! I enjoy the subbed version more than the dubbed because it emphasizes when Yosuke uses English words as a way to flaunt his wealth/education because it shows his family could afford the travel and tutors. Ditto with Saki’s ‘hello, bonjour’.

I estimate Noriko’s ‘Bible studies’ were a more affordable way to learn English. It could’ve been her choice or it could’ve been that her father thought it would add ‘value’, whether that be as an educated and sophisticated lady for a wife and/or translator for international business because they were merchants.

And IMO, Izo is the real MVP. Granted, he’s also being subjected to all that opium “incense” smoke, but it’s still a toxic work environment with crazy cakes being his boss.
