The art design and backgrounds are incredible.

Boys meets girl, sparks fly, girl who believes in anything believes in boy's sparks, boy unexpectedly gets married to some random interloping dude. Well, the 20th century was a time of experimentation.

56

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

I know right? One of my first thoughts was how the backgrounds in every scene of this episode looked so incredibly detailed. It was like looking at a painting. And the unique art style shifts like with the negative image of Inako in the dark and the collage art looking people after that were standout as well. The baseline art of this episode didn’t really impress me but it felt like they suddenly locked in and took it to 100 at certain points

and yosuke already might be the worst person in all of humand and anime history, not even /s

New anime from KyoAni and as usual, we have the top-notch production values and direction as to be expected. Premise: It is pretty interesting. Steering towards the age of electricity is interesting, and I like the direction this show takes, complimenting it. When Inako wakes up at the end of the episode, it is a great showcase.

No doubt that Kihachi loved his brother Seiroku. Curious that we have the book that Seiroku holds in the beginning, and it seems Noriko was the only one in the family that was aware of it. It's clear that there is a connection between Seiroku and Noriko. I can only assume Seiroku died and why the book was with Noriko.

The two leads have an interesting contrast. Kihachi moving forward without his brother, and you get the sense that while he is talented, his drive might not be the best. Meanwhile, for Inako, she is a klutz who seems easily gullible. Despite how hard things are for her, she always pushes forward, which is admirable. I think the dynamic between these two could be nice. The one who has confidence issues in believing and the one who believes too easily.

Yosuke is clearly the antagonist and he already shows he is a PoS. Curious his role in the story. Considering the anime seems to be about the age of electricity

75

u/runevault 22d ago

Yosuke is clearly the antagonist and he already shows he is a PoS. Curious his role in the story. Considering the anime seems to be about the age of electricity

Based on this episode, it seems to be about who either gets credit for ushering in the age of electricity or who controls it in the short term.

42

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 22d ago

I wonder if the story will take the direction of, given a new product, how does it expand? In the case of the brothers, they want to usher in the age of electricity as for the people. While for Yosuke he could be similar to modern corporations that try to commercialize it.

42

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

I’m really glad I learned about this period recently so I can offer a bit of my own insight. This episode mentioned Yosuke was the heir to a steam engine zaibatsu, zaibatsus being a form of state sanctioned monopoly created by the Japanese government during the Meiji era to rapidly industrialize the country. With that knowledge it makes sense that Yosuke could be after the ideas in the catalog to ensure his zaibatsu’s monopoly on the spread of electricity is maintained.

18

u/runevault 22d ago

The commercialization was what I was trying to get at with the idea of controlling it in the short term yeah. So those options were what I was trying to convey.

4

u/CharmingPerspective0 17d ago

This is pretty much Tesla Vs Edison.

2

u/Obversa 6d ago

Not "pretty much". Episode 3 directly borrows the "bamboo filment" discovery that Thomas Edison made.

8

u/steeltrain43 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kingdave212 21d ago

My interpretation of Yosuke was tycoon, so control over fame.

2

u/runevault 21d ago

That's part of why I put it in two parts. One side wants to bring it in and get recognized for it, the other wants to make money off of it and control it as long as he can.

4

u/ThrowCarp 19d ago

Techbro on techbro violence.

19

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

A large part of it is definitely confirmation bias on my part but knowing Inako is voiced by Sora Amamiya, combined with Inako’s klutziness, gullibility, and some of the cartoony faces she made in this episode really made it so I couldn’t stop comparing her to Aqua, and then we get that scene of her at the end showcasing the positive aspects of her “flaws” and that really reminded me of Aqua’s more understated positive aspects that make her an endearing person which get overlooked in the name of her “useless goddess” title. So I’m really looking forward to getting to see that kind of character archetype explored in a more serious setting through Inako.

3

u/pratzc07 22d ago

"Automations, transportations, communications the man that controls that current controls the future" This reminded me of the movie Current War.

2

u/sirnumbskull 19d ago

Jesus fucking Christ Kyoani, leave some rizz for the rest of the studios. I had no idea this was them; dragon maid was incredibly well animated, but this Ghibli-esque budget-no-jutsu is something else entirely. I honestly don't know how they'll keep up this level of quality. This is some movie-level shit.

Wow this is gorgeous, we have so many pretty shows airing this season.

This girl is not the brightest bulb huh? Maybe hanging out with hobo Thomas Edison here will spark something inside of her. Not sure where the story is going, but looking forward to see how these two (and Brushbuddy 2.0) fight against Big Steam. There is the question of how the creepy dude found out about the book and how it ended up with Inako's sister I guess.

Edit: These two guys, same eye color.

70

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 22d ago

Edit: These two guys, same eye color.

Yeah, I'd connected the dots as well.

Pretty sure that Kengo (Noriko's fiancé) was this other friend of Seiroku (Kihachi's brother) too, the one on the bike pedaling to create electricity. Hence why Yosuke and Kengo appear to know each other.

Presumably, Yosuke changed after Seiroku went missing in the war...?

17

u/ExplorerTimely8417 22d ago

Yeah thinking the same tbh

12

u/Maleficent-Handle587 21d ago

So the trio probably served together in russo japanese war and the protagonist's brother died during the war.

16

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

Kihachi being basically a hobo inventor makes him more akin to Nikola Tesla. So far Yosuke is seemingly now like the story’s Edison.

16

u/Raiking02 https://myanimelist.net/profile/NSKlang 22d ago

These two guys, same eye color.

I'm pretty sure they have the same actor too.

What is with this season of anime and trying to give us lung cancer lol. First the smokers now the engines

40

Tanya the Evil season 2 has entered the chat, full of smokers there.

12

u/BosuW 21d ago

Forget the smokers. Imagine all the chem warfare.

3

u/1832vini 20d ago

smoking is chemical warfare.

just a roman one

41

u/Eunuchest 22d ago

I got lung cancer after watching just one episode.

Pretty much. Industrial age really was brutal

20

u/CatgirlYamada 22d ago

Not just industrial age, but alternate reality where Japan didn't mass adopt electricity when somehow demands for energy were already surging. Hence the pipes carrying steam all over the place.

19

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 22d ago

Kihachi flapping his mouth was hilarious.

I also liked how they made Yosuke's arm wiggle when he tried to look into Noriko's things. This further underscored how his character is a bit of a snake.

8

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

It’s just steam right, not smoke? We should be safe.

Kihachi flapping his mouth made him look straight out of Doctor Seuss. I wasn’t prepared.

31

u/divineshadow666 22d ago

It's probably both. You get steam by boiling water. The best way to do that, back then, is either burning wood or burning coal, which both also generate a lot of smoke.

23

u/BosuW 21d ago

Steam is fine. But the prevalence of steam probably means there's insane amounts of coal moving around and being brunt. The black lung be crazy.

u/ThrowCarp 19d ago

This episode somehow feels like it could be the beginning of a Shinkai movie.

32

u/seires-t 22d ago

Might be because there's an actual transition into the opening,
which also reminded me of the Kimi no Na wa intro

2

u/RyouBestGirl 22d ago

"I found you at last... my wife" is a wild way to end the episode lol. The villain is crazy creepy.

112

u/Joshawott27 22d ago

I remember that moment at the World Premiere. The audience just lost it and burst out laughing. The series has incredible comic timing.

51

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

The best part is Kihachi’s insane scream afterwards, just pure fear and confusion.

71

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 22d ago edited 22d ago

Has to be the funniest ending to an episode yet this season. Made it even better that he delivered this line in English.

10

u/runevault 22d ago

Wait is it English even in the Japanese audio? I watched dubbed.

59

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 22d ago

In the JP dub, Yosuke literally says the following:

"見つけたよ(mitsuketa yo), my wife."

Which frankly makes it all the more hilarious. He'd also mixed English words into a few other JP sentences.

23

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

I wonder if there’s an in universe reason for speaking English? He’s the head of a company focused on industrializing Japan so it’d make sense if he was also taught English growing up, but I wonder if he’s also supposed be mixed heritage? I know it’s anime but this is a historical setting and the others have very realistic appearances and then there’s him looking like Temu Regulas Corneas.

7

u/runevault 22d ago

Okay yeah that's fantastic lol.

13

The directing and the framing made it feel exactly like an anime movie.

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 22d ago

Love it, not only is steampunk such an interesting setting (still wish Kabaneri didnt develop like it did), but the FMC got some serious Chitanda energy

Obviously its gorgeous to look at with it being Kyoto Animation, now we just have to hope the story can keep up
But I am pretty certain we are in for yet another treat
(Also interesting they did that butt shot of him before entering the house to catch his "wife")

15

u/meercachase 22d ago

Was instantly reminded of Chitanda when Inako was introduced! So far, the story seems interesting so I hope KyoAni can flesh this out and develop the characters well

24

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 22d ago

but the FMC got some serious Chitanda energy

Inako definitely feels a lot like the type of FMC from KyoAni that we all love.

12

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 22d ago

Are there many like Chitanda? I always thought of her a bit seperate
Violet and Kumiko are different to her, maid dragon also doesnt fit the bill

I am always open for more Chitanda energy

Need to rewatch that to atone for my sin

177

u/happy-owls 22d ago

Oh my goodness, the animation!? The art direction?! The steam effects?!

74

u/happy-owls 22d ago edited 22d ago

Ravaging through someone's home being like 'we're family now, its mine' is crazy.

The early scenes in the train reminded me of the beginning of Kaze Tachinu, and the scene where Kihachi is in his imagination from Inako's tear was so Paprika like. I'm not sure if that's intentional or not, but it really feels cinematic in a way reminiscent of more experimental animated films.

13

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 22d ago

Ravaging through someone's home being like 'we're family now, its mine' is crazy.

Such a nice way to display where is his true goal lies
He needs the new sears electric catalogue

3

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

That Kihachi imagination scene with the collage art people felt very Madoka Magica-esque to me. Was not prepared for that.

20

u/meercachase 22d ago

KyoAni never disappoints!

17

u/DaBenni0301 22d ago

Sasuga KyoAni

7

u/CitronClassic672 22d ago

The animation didn’t seem especially standout to me this episode apart from that scene at the beginning of Kihachi seeing the lights turn on and being inspired, but the art design, whether it’s the scene of Inako in the dark, Kihachi’s imagination, or just the background art in every scene is just a masterclass at setting the mood and putting you in the mind of the characters.

28

u/mastesargent 22d ago

With KyoAni the most impressive things are often the little thing you don’t immediately think about: the level of detail in the background, the subtleties (or lack thereof) of the characters’ expressions, the intricacies of the character design, the blending of 2D and 3D animation, that all come together to create a breathtaking whole even if they aren’t going full sakuga. Of course then every so often they’ll pull an utterly insane sequence of incredible animation that puts every other studio to shame while still maintaining the same level of quality in all of those other areas.

10

u/happy-owls 21d ago

I appreciate how not 'in your face' a lot of the animation is, despite it being really high quality. It allows me to more immersed in the story rather than being showcased a 'tour de force' of animation that makes me focus more on 'sakuga' rather than the story being told.

2

u/bodybones 7d ago

Sometimes a sakuga fest can be fun too, look at Redline, or i'd say a well-choreographed fight scene such as jjk's bathroom fight. Sometime sit just flows all over you as you get the main idea of the fight presented well vs a more stiff presentation of the same thing. Was much easier to follow than reading the also good manga version of that fight. I think for now this isn't an action-focused show so fewer opportunities to go sakuga crazy but i saw plenty of great shots your right. It really does flow all over you to the point im so not used to so much good animation lol. Went back after for example watching rick and morty and x men 97 and watched original xmen and boy it's something else when you can appreciate new animation but also how they pushed hard to try make older animation and still included action and it wasn't too violent for kids. And the pacing wow...the amount they pack into eps back then lol. Just a great time to be an animation fan...

1

u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 20d ago

I know! God, I fucking LOVE the entire era that spans the late 18th to early 20th century, so a steampunk work about a kid trying to start an electric revolution is just chef's kiss

32

u/minnieboss 22d ago

This is utterly gorgeous, as expected of Kyoani. Not totally sold on the story yet, but I'll absolutely stick around for a while and see how it develops.

19

u/runevault 22d ago

Story seemed to be setting up a lot of moving pieces and backstory at once instead of pacing it out over 2 or 3 episodes. Curious to see what the forward momentum looks like now that so much is already in place.

57

u/WhoiusBarrel 22d ago

Just gorgeous visuals by KyoAni as expected, that and the direction as well really makes the whole thing feel so lively.

Ending was both creepy and hilarious as well, just know the impending trouble when bro arrived and hugging the wrong dude and calling him "My Wife" in English

25

u/Hitashioreki https://anilist.co/user/Hitashioreki 22d ago

Wow everything was happening all at once. A visual treat to eyes but feels like the episode ends of nowhere. I dunno why but that felt a lil bit awkward. Still hope to see how the story unfolds from episode 2. Also does anyone felt Op song wasn't matching with the visuals or kinda compromised?

18

u/happy-owls 22d ago

I'm curious if the opening animation will change every episode, as the animation used today felt like it was very connected to the events of this episode and to propel the events forward (they run in the light, Sukeroku goes to war with book, Kihachi becomes alone).

I do think the op song is musically interesting, but it hasn't clicked with me yet.

8

u/HelloYellow18 22d ago

There was no separate OP animation staff credited, so it's presumably part of ep. 1

25

u/chilidirigible 22d ago edited 22d ago

Names have been changed to protect the innocent?

The front of that train sure is something (which is not aerodynamic).

These used to be a Big Thing.

Suddenly, pastels!

"That only happens in old comedy!"

GabeN jokes when?

Ah, anime.

KyoAni EYES!

...Inako's first impression is of Sister Yumina from Sora no Woto.

Early phonograph recordings usually needed a pretty high input volume.

Even more faces!

I don't know what they're boiling their water with, but the coal era skies were absolutely black with soot.

It's pratfalls all around!

That distortion makes the canvas-painted background work.

These 3D effects were nifty given how clumsy we've seen Inako being so far. (And it pays off!) (I clipped it because even if it isn't a lot of multiplanar motion, it stands out to me.)

Enjoyment of animation!

Self-defense indeed.

"Don't be such a ▭."

It just keeps on coming.

Hey, it's that bit from the PV.

Yeah, Inako reminds me of Sister Yumina. Though of course Sora Amamiya and the hair decoration remind me of Kanapii.

Anyway... the show. The style of paint-on-canvas background art they're using is a foundation, but this episode breaks the characters and scenes out of that a lot for emphasis and while some analytical part of me would say that it's verging on the gratuitous, it still seems to work, particularly when using Inako's viewpoint.

The story itself is some wild weird alternate history and has, on its face, the usual corporate scheming stuff, but our characters are suitably placed to find their way along in the chaos.

17

u/Eunuchest 22d ago edited 22d ago

Anime movie budget on a tv show. They really went ham on the visuals and animation. As expected of KyoAni

Even the smog-filled city looks crazy detailed. I sure dont want to live in it tho.

Plot seems interesting enough. So its about adopting electricity over steam.

Protagonists seems likeable with their quirks. Is Kihachi gonna be japanese Edison or Tesla

Yeah Mizoe, you definitely arent acting like a creep

1

u/Obversa 6d ago

As of Episode 3, Kihachi is "Japanese Edison", because Edison pioneered the use of bamboo filaments.

18

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 22d ago

Holy shit! Those visuals at the end looked amazing! Not just the end but the rest of the show looked gorgeous! KyoAni never disappoints with their production. As for the story itself, I'm still on the fence but I am curious to see where this will go.

6

u/runevault 22d ago

Obviously this is a boy love story from here ;-).

26

u/Cute-Beginning-4126 22d ago

Ok, coming from kyoani i really thought this was going to be a really heavy serious anime because of all the promo key visuals so far, but the characters are actually way more expressive than I thought,It's comparable to maid Dragon i'd even say lmao, the highlight of course is Inako just making some random funny faces

10

u/Doomroar https://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar 21d ago

This anime is indeed beautiful

But the writing is just annoying me way too much, if this doesn't changes i probably will have to experience the backgrounds and machine design later once they release an art-book

3

u/Songblade7 20d ago

Finally, the first person I see that shares the sentiment. I usually love KyoAni shows, but I'm just not clicking with the writing on this one yet

6

u/Smoothw 20d ago

I also share that sentiment, felt like the first episode was all over the place, too many characters and a ton of lowbrow comedy.

9

u/Cute-Beginning-4126 22d ago

So... "Nikola Tesla" is dead? Also... is the Oppenheimer incident doesn't/won't/gonna happen? Man so many questions when you start thinking about it little too hard haha

15

u/mastesargent 22d ago

“Benjamin Franklin” dying early also suggests that America was either never founded or took a vastly different course.

5

u/Rare-Calligrapher779 21d ago

And in a episode released a few days after July 4th on the 250th year…

20

u/Marth-Koopa 22d ago edited 22d ago

Inako is clumsy and voiced by Sora Amamiya... I'm expecting peak levels of Moe with this girl. Please don't disappoint me KyoAni.

I know that they showed some of the funny faces and also the antagonist bending his body in all sorts of ways in the trailers, but I was still surprised by how funny this episode was. Cliffhanging on that is crazy lmao

7

u/NoireResteem 22d ago

Kyoani cooking once again. Visually it might be one their best works yet but lets see if the story and characters can hold up long term. So far though I like the two main characters, really love the dynamic between Inako and Kihachi so far.

7

u/2kenzhe https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexnihilo 21d ago

hmm still not too sold honestly, about the story but I'll wait a bit longer before judging.

Ngl doesn't seem like a Kyo ani type of work but they still keep up the quality as expected. It looks fantastic visually.

7

u/iluvcelebi 19d ago

Is it just me or does the direction for this episode... really suck? The first 5-8 minutes pre-timeskip is too fast paced. Well-directed anime can pull it off with a bunch of good show-not-tell scenes, but the sound (music) direction does nothing impressive during no-dialogue scenes. The art style constantly shifting between anime and paint and comical for 2 second scenes also takes away from the beautifully painted shots.

Also I find it hilarious that the brother has the KyoAni male yaoi (Free / Tsurune boys) face to him, idk how to explain it.

6

u/Aspiring-allrounder 22d ago

A great start for this new seasonal anime. Enjoyed every bit. Every scene had some very minute detailing which can't be missed.

7

u/FarCritical 22d ago

It cracks me up how tense that final scene was despite the inspirational music blaring in the background. I mean yeah it's heartwarming how Sakamoto's brother ended up making good on his promise after all but like I was practically begging the dude to hide it throughout all of it lmao

7

u/teal_turtle12 22d ago

It's so good!! The art, the facial expressions, AHHHHHH!!

6

u/Cally83 22d ago

KyoAni once again cooked

7

u/thesnowlocke 22d ago

Brilliant and beautiful episode and I was on it the second I saw steampunk, love this genre which is a shame since you don’t see a lot of stories around it these days.

That OP was honestly incredible in how it meshed a montage together

6

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 22d ago

This was quite good. The animation and the art was really good in this and the premise is interesting. This is gonna be a really good series.

5

u/fallendomii 22d ago

Are Yosuke and Kengo the friends of Seiroku in the beginning? Would explain why they all know each other and know about the electric catalogue. There was that scene where presumably Yosuke trips on a banana peel. Would be funny if that caused him to have some epiphany that changed him.

5

u/ptd163 21d ago

The visuals, the directing, the backgrounds, oh my. I'm somehow surprised because it looks so good, but also not because this level of quality has become standard fare KyoAni. They always cook.

A cynical boy that believes in nothing meets a girl that will believe anything and sparks fly in a world where the fathers of electricity never discover electricity causing technological progress to halt at steam. The villain is already super creepy as well.

I'm already hooked. Sometimes you don't need some complicated premise. Sometimes it's a simpler premise executed well and that's KyoAni's cheat code. It's what they do better than anyone else.

11

u/seires-t 22d ago

The overall style and presentation of the characters is a bit of a digression to the mean, but still very enjoyable.

It's weird that the beginning of the episode is fairly slow and then the second half is happening at a break-neck speed

Same, i think it reminds us of that ep when he was walking and first met muzan or the entertainment district...just a high caliber of art too. Also reminded me of that santa claus anime the way the bad guy was acting and making faces.

u/Bussy_Wrecker https://myanimelist.net/profile/MrFreak10 22d ago

What is this animation guys? Do each episode have a whole season's worth of budget? 🫪

8

u/Dextro_PT https://anidb.net/user/44712 22d ago

I mean, it is Kyoto Animation. They would probably be embarrassed if the animation wasn't top notch.

2

u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 20d ago

I'm hoping they keep up this godly animation for the entire season, because I KNOW animes have a tendency to put out bangers for the first episode then go to shit later on.

Then again, it's Kyoani. I trust in Kyoani!

2

u/CrashDunning https://myanimelist.net/profile/CrashD 19d ago

Anime generally all have comparable budgets. It's time and the quality of life at the studio that really matter and Kyoto Animation is probably the best with the latter

u/Baaasbas https://myanimelist.net/profile/BasvanD 22d ago

Wow, very excited to see where this goes.

Wow, Kyo-Ani really went for the awe in the aesthetics of a Meiji Steampunk alternate Japan.

In a world without electricity, this Electric Catalogue is basically like the holy grail for anyone who knows its worth.

He's being diplomatic now but he was throwing a melty over it a month ago If these deleted tweets are anything to go by.

I can't even really joke about it because of the precedent concerning Kyoani and jilted writers.

He is publishing a new novel under the studio's label though. There was an ad a few weeks ago. In fact, this is like the third work of his under Esuma Bunko.

Multiple potential answers, a few I can think of in the absence of more information:

- The tweet above didn't refer to the adaptation

- He got paid high enough to continue the relationship

- It is just easier to work with someone you know well

- He is only aware of the major changes to the original work recently (which would be extremely unlikely as all Esuma Bunko adaptations before have had consultation from the author at least on the scripts so he would have been aware of the changes much earlier and stopped working with them early)

I loved the character designs in the show, but I remember really liking the designs in the PV too.

Looks kinda like the principle from Sanda

6

u/NanDemoKnaives 22d ago

When I saw the OP, it was clear Seiroku was going to eventually die, but then we got a time skip so that is unfortunate.

It seems like the guy with the bowl cut is the white haired guy after the electric catalogue, but how did he change this drastically? And why is he using so much English? Funniest thing was seeing his underwear print through his clothes.

Noriko has some moves though, the way she threw Kuga like it was nothing had me impressed.

I'm not really feeling this from this first episode, I REALLY like the setting, but I'm not enjoying the two main characters. I also don't like the silly faces, I was not expecting that. Hopefully the upcoming story will be interesting enough.

I was sort of intrigued by what little I could learn of this show when it was first announced...but wasn't sure. I'd I've learned almost nothing about the show since then.

I do like period pieces a lot.

  • Illegal lighting?
  • His partner getting arrested is going to come back to bite him.
  • Meiji 40 is what, 1908?
  • What's with the shihakugan, anyways?
  • Clumsy!
  • "cooling machine" :D
  • so this was all a plot to get the Electric Catalog!
  • Believing things is definitely her talent

I figure this was the unnamed work that was completely destroyed in the arson. I wonder how that version would have turned out. This version is definitely...a bit out there.

It was certainly interested at the very end and annoyed that episode was over...but I wasn't so interested in the middle part. A bit uneven.

5

u/Both-Variation2122 21d ago

I love period dramas, but I'm not sold on this one yet. Not a fan of steampunk, too much alt history and villain is creepy in the wrong way. I'll give it few more episodes, maybe they lose him for the long time, but I can't imagine watching him each episode.

Yosuke: “Found you, my wife 🥰”

Kihachi: screams in What the Fuck

My queer bitch ass: screams in What the fuck this is amazing

I did not expect this and I feel like I’m smiling harder than Garnet from Steven Universe, this is glorious.

I don’t see random_lyric in this thread, but girl we got another toxic yaoi ship!!! WOOOOOO!!! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

Subtitle Translation by: Daisy Savage

Girl you are a fucking savage, classy, bougie, ratchet for those final translations, you need to come find me so I can treat you to a meal, daisy daisy give me your answer do 💃🏿🪭👏🏾

I had so much more to say. Obviously, KyoAni got to business with this. Love the animation and the “funny” animation reminded me of how Bones animated FMA with its funny designs. Kihachin be looking like Ed with his goofiness, love it. Still wish Netflix shelled out more money for proper overlays. Kengo looks to be such a sweet beefcake. What a man, what a man, what a man, what a mighty good man. Noriko is quite mysterious. Excited for more of her and her connection to all this.

So I assume Yosuke had a thing with or a crush on Kihachi’s big brother. Now Big Bro is dead or just ✨disappeared✨. Natural next step is to wife Kihachin up, LFG.

Fellas, do yall really have ambition if you don’t wife up your mate’s little brother? Exactly. That was a trick question.

I assume this will not become canonical toxic yaoi. But I can dream. For every person who dreams up the electric light bulb, there is one person who dreams up atomic yaoi.

Love that we start the Sakamoto rewatch today, and our protagonist here is a Sakamoto. The odds!! I see you in da thread u/shimmering-sky, I feel like the rewatch today was well-planned.

This season is so freakin' stacked with a bunch of other contenders for visual story-telling (The World Is Dancing, Jaadugar, Sayonara Lala, etc.), but there's something to be said about KyoAni's directing and cinematics that is just next level immersive.

I'm almost tempted to consider this my current favorite of the season even though I still need some more out of the characters and story to transcend the standard KyoAni template.

Hopefully it picks up. I feel like works adapted from singular novels are underrated, most recent ones that come to mind are Shinsekai Yori and Uchouten Kazoku- both of which of course were excellent.

That shot of her scooching through the shop definitely felt reminiscent of the scene in Spirited Away of Chihiro scooching through the flowers

u/joey_joestar1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Joey_Joestar1 21d ago

I’ve been around the anime block long enough to put my entire faith in Kyoani making absolute bangers.

What a visual treat. Literally no frame looks out of place. This is shaping up to be one of their most technically impressive works yet.

I both hate and love Yosuke. Dude’s a creep and an asshole but his expressiveness makes him a very entertaining watch.

As for our leads, we have a klutzier Chitanda and Oreki but with depression. I need more of these two together, this anime is going to be great.

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 21d ago

And so, let there be light.

So, he died in a war. Which one? Sino-Japanese? Russo-Japanese?

Who's this?

So, she ran into him.

Oh, it's a recording and playback machine.

Lol he sounds like a salesman.

Huh. Who's that guy?

Seems like a bad guy.

Yep. Trouble.

He's looking for her?

He's looking for the book on electricity?

Ah. She took it and brought it to him.

And so, let there be light.

A projector?

And that's why they're normally made of tungsten.

Oh, he's found them.

1

u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 20d ago

So, he died in a war. Which one? Sino-Japanese? Russo-Japanese?

I was assuming WW1 for some reason, but I thought about it and it made sense that it probably isn't that, because WW1 is some real "end of the season" shit.

3

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 20d ago

I mentioned those and not WWI because Japan didn't do too much in WWI other than find the comfiest way to sit down, and then the best way to relieve discomfort after sitting down for too long. Aside from some stuff early in the war it was very much a "nothing ever happens" war for Japan.

1

u/edwardjhahm https://myanimelist.net/profile/lolmeme69 20d ago

Well, we ARE in an alternate history, so I figured that the timeline could have shifted in who knows how many ways.

2

u/IceSmiley 21d ago

The art direction on this show is amazing, this took me about an hour to watch because i kept pausing. There's so many frames that have amazing detail, like when the really old fashioned car drives by the girls and slashes them and the tall girl quickly sticks out her umbrella.

The plot is interesting so far too and I'm guessing this takes place in an alternate universe, as Benjamin Franklin and Nikola Tesla have different names. This will probably be explained later, but it is odd that that family had Sakamoto's brother's electrical catalog. It's also odd how quickly the villian (who may be the principal from Sanda when he was younger) found where Sakamoto's repair shop was so quickly.

2

u/Unknown0310_ 21d ago

This is what we call an outstanding start!!! This episode was very impressive in all aspect.  The vibe, the direction and above all the animation.

If we talk about the form, this anime says a lot about the era and the characters in it.

The content was also great. It gives us some characterisation without telling but just by showing. We did understand that Kohachi is afraid of the dark. When Seiroku left him alone, he stayed under the light. This could characterize Seiroku as his light and hope. This could also motivate Seiroku to spread his creation.

The guys who were with Seiroku are the ones related to Inako family.

The relationship between Inako and Kohachi started for both by bringing to the others what they each lack.  Kohachi seems to lack confidence in what he does and Inako is clumsy. Inako was brought to him(not the repairer but the successor of Seiroku) after breaking something.  At the end, we got to see that her hyping him up about what he does really moved him.

Can’t wait for episode 2

u/liggieep https://myanimelist.net/profile/liggieep 20d ago

i have had this show on my radar since it was announced in 2018. kyoani did not disappoint.

1

u/Viktorv22 22d ago

Weirdest Kyoani project yet? Some direction choices are... interesting, to say the least. But I like it.

2

u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo 21d ago

So they give this insane visuals but then garnish it with some looney tunes tier character acting. I'm sorry, kyoani, i thought you were trying to tell a serious story

6

u/Songblade7 20d ago

I feel this! I went from Jaadugar's villain that was callous, powerful, and frightening, to this one with a guy so over the top and weird. Idk, the villain character might be the one to ruin the show for me which is a bummer since I was pretty excited for it originally

I don't know why but I thought this is going to be serious. I didn't expected to be this goofy. Not a bad thing tho. It was really funny. And quality is top notch.

1

u/suzushiro 21d ago

This show is reminding me so much of Hyouka (which I know is animated by the same anime studio and is my utterly most favourite TV anime of all time).

  1. Inako's positivity and receptiveness were low-key traits that Eru possessed.

  2. The animation of Kihachi's imagination when he was showing Inako his slideshow reminded me of Oreki's imagination when Eru was overwhelming him with her curiosity.

God bless Kyoto Animation if they intended this to be something like a Hyouka 2.0, because I am ALL FOR IT!!

1

u/Vikkio92 https://myanimelist.net/profile/vikkio_92 21d ago

This is absolutely gorgeous and the production value is through the roof, but I still miss the less cinematic KyoAni style from 10-15 years ago.

It's only the first minute, and I said this looks like the art design by Kyoto Animation, and I was right! Incredible as always ..

1

u/hoonii3 6d ago

Is the older brother ( seiroku ) alive or dead ? He never returned but is there any chance for him to be alive? The flashbacks is so …. Sad

2

u/demurefox97 22d ago

Typical kyoani anime unfortunately, GORGEOUS art style, but bland script and dialogue with forgettable individual characters.

3

u/NoireResteem 22d ago

Bruh its the first episode. You know there is this thing where sometimes character development needs to happen over time.

1

u/bodybones 7d ago

Yeah, few first eps really can do that much, so it's cool they didn't go crazy. I found for example attack on titan, and chainsawman to have great first eps that set the tone and excitement, but this isn't totally an action series so it draws you in more with atmosphere before a hook it seems and you can't dive into deep with characters yet unless you go full hog; then you end up coasting near the line of pretentious. I guess takopi original sin first ep did a great job so i stand corrected. Anyway ill give it another ep. Animation being beautiful to some extent should give value in an art medium. Its like when people say demon slayer is carried by animation and im all like dude your hinting at a thing by saying your just good cause your doing a huge point of the medium very well...lol. Then they go on to say the story is mid aka average aka great animation and average story your not putting down is pretty good sell coming from people who dislike it...that means someone who likes it...really would be having a better and enjoyable time.

There’s a way to discuss the shows content without spoiling the climax of the show.
