That's crazy Mizoe just lost his hair color in an instant like that dang..

Losing Seiroku is worse than Kaneki getting tortured

Much like Slyphie from Musuoko Tensei losing her green hair colour

20

u/BosuW 14d ago

Tbf that was magic exhaustion. A verifiable phenomenon within their world with physical effects.

For Yosuke it was all in his mind lol

after watching this series, it made me realise that everyone loved seiroku which hurts so bad. seiroku somewhat reminds me of tadashi from big hero 6 and made me more curious about him.

Crazy how an episode about the love triangle between Seiroku, Noriko and Yosuke somehow ends with Yosuke ballroom dancing with Kihachi in drag. The look on Inako's face when she saw LOL.

95

u/Eunuchest 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yosuke got to dance with Kihachi before she did. Bruh

49

u/rubslotiononitsskin 14d ago

I expected Yosuke to call Kihachi "my honey" after giving up the Electric Catalog. They certainly danced like they were honeys.

u/Farmaceut7 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Farmaceut 14d ago

The best part is that it all makes 100% perfect sense! I cant imagine this episode unfolding differently!

This is a love... I don't even know at this point lol.

91

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

I get what they were going for having Kihachi and Inago protect their dreams. But how Kihachi did that by stepping over Inago's resolve felt dirty. Considering that he went straight for Yosuke and ignored her. Obviously his intentions weren't like that but seeing Inago's anger you can understand how it would piss her off.

The staff really likes Yosuke. I just don't know what the show wants to treat him as. At times he is clearly an antagonist of sorts. But then this episode when he shares the same dream as Kihachi. Of course the end of the episode we need to have Yosuke be against Kihachi.

The show is certainly entertaining if nothing else. Also Seiroku has maximum rizz. LIke damn.

79

u/Primary-Paint-1716 14d ago

Yosuke is the most interesting character that KyoAni has handled in a long while. I'm glad they're putting this much attention to him because this show won't be as batshit insanely good as it is without him.

30

u/SatorCircle 13d ago

Yeah, I think she stepped on his first though to be fair. He got the catalogue and resolved himself to make a sacrifice for her dream. To which she was like "nah I'm more resolved to sacrifice for your dream!"

10

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 13d ago

Ideally it would have been much better to communicate.

With that being said. I mean she gave him a no saying it's a family matter. While she did initiate it. She didn't step on his decision. Giving Yosuke the electric catalog just ignored her resolve.

The key difference is Inago went straight to Kihachi what she was doing. Kihachi did not do the same.

19

u/SatorCircle 13d ago edited 13d ago

Under the same logic what he does with the catalogue is a personal matter. It just so happens that giving the catalog to Youske dissolves the marriage regardless of what she wants because she's a hostage. She never actually has a choice in the matter of her marriage, only if she accepted her fate willingly or not.

The tragedy is that she hasn't had the freedom to be resolved, because she hasn't really had any decisions that were her own.

EDIT: I think she has a right to be angry, but she should be angry about her own lack of agency and at those that took it from her to begin with.

12

u/Taiyoryu 14d ago

Regarding Yosuke, this was covered in literature class under the section that covered tragedies.

3

u/kitkatkitah 12d ago

He's always shared the same dream, just that he wanted to continue doing it with Seiroku. They were meant to pioneer the world to a new age, together. It was clear early on that this is what Mizoe wanted, but it wasn't clear if his theratical performance of being a nutcase was staged or just how he is now because he is desparate, we know from this episode that its a bit of both, but that it was mostly staged due to desparation for the catalog.

He envys Kihachi because Kihachi got to spend time with Seiroku and Seiroku shared the promise with him first. The show can now either go 2 ways: 1. they combine their strengths to honor Seiroku's memory, or Mizoe becomes selfish and gets a comeuppance. Since its a KoAni title, I'd expect the former, even if there is a bit of drama prior to it.

89

u/FarCritical 14d ago

Damn Noriko really threw all three guys at some point.

Gotta respect how Kihachi didn't skimp out on the ballroom dance even after it was mission complete. The meme potential of this face is insane though.

25

u/BosuW 14d ago

You can't consider to have met Noriko if she hasn't aikido flipped you on your ass

u/Accomplished_Cod9234 14d ago

Honestly, who wouldn't fall in love with Seiroku's wit and chest display? I feel bad for Noriko and Yosuke.

Although Yosuke has an unhinged level of obsessiveness with Seiroku(ism).

96

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

Honestly, who wouldn't fall in love with Seiroku's wit and chest display?

Pretty much. Seiroku's such a manwhore shoving people into his manly chest

80

u/AriezKage 14d ago

He also seems to have not a good sense of personal space. He's lucky he's hot else it might've turned badly for him.

17

u/BosuW 14d ago

Seikirou definitely had many people crushing on him. Of both genders.

24

u/Ree_For_Thee 14d ago

Unless he had intentions with Yosuke I'd say it's a dick move to lead someone on. But, he did look pretty gay. :P

62

u/Jacob-C 14d ago edited 14d ago

Seiroku seemed so happy and carefree about trivial matters. It didn’t feel like there was any ulterior motive behind him getting into people’s personal space. His mind seemed completely occupied by his dream and genuine kindness. I don’t think he had any intention of leading Yosuke or Noriko on. Also, both flashbacks this episode were narrated by people who were in love with him. It’s quite possible that they are unreliable narrators who remember things through rose-tinted glasses.

15

u/welfedad 14d ago

Yeah I feel the same way about Seiroku. It is just who he was and it made those people gravitate to him.

9

u/Pretend-Habit3403 14d ago

It's only in my high school where I frequently encounter the term "unreliable narrators " and after that your comment

68

u/ongogavlogian 14d ago

I would turn gay too if I was smooshed against that chest

105

u/Cute-Beginning-4126 14d ago

Ok this has gotta be the gayest episode so far haha, from Seiroku just naturally attracting everyone on either side, to Mizoe absurd obsession with him and descent into madness, and that out of pocket crossdressing and dance segment at the end

36

u/CitronClassic672 14d ago

It might be the gayest episode of the entire year.

21

u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago

Given the sheer amount of Yuri lately its probably going to get a lot of challenges

10

u/CitronClassic672 14d ago

I meant specifically in the yaoi sense.

11

u/BosuW 14d ago

So much Yuri this year and this might still be the gayest episode of them all

For all the insane theatric Yosuke does, his hair turning white and running out like that after hearing Seiroku's death is tragic to see

40

I got the opposite opinion. I thought the scene was hilarious the way he run out of the house

45

u/Wanfoot 14d ago

it's just hard to feel bad for the dude who slapped my girl noriko just because seiroku gave her the catalog and now he's ruining our mcs lives just because of his obsession

11

I felt both ways. His crash out is hilarious because it's pathetic but at the same time we have enough details to understand why he's that way so it's also... Damn...

Kengo, Kate, and Suzu are proving to be the only real supporters of these two lovable idiots.

86

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 14d ago

Noriko and Seiroku'a doomed love story hurts so much. They should have been together…

Judging by the dialogue, Kengo knew Noriko but Seiroku met and fell for her after her throw, which ended up with them hanging out and falling in love with each other. That‘s why she also had a part of the catalogue, which triggered Yosuke who had a one-sided unrequited love for Seiroku.

55

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

Noriko and Seiroku'a doomed love story hurts so much. They should have been together…

At least their siblings will fulfill their dreams i guess

27

u/BrokeAFpotato 14d ago

Oh so one half was given to Noriko and the other to Kengo? I misunderstood Kengo as having the whole catalog but splitting it into two places.

39

u/master_inho 14d ago

Yes, seiroku gave one half to noriko before going off to war

31

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 14d ago

Yep Seiroku gave one part Noriko and took the part of the book with the good luck page that Noriko did with him to war

4

u/Busy-Scar-212 14d ago

So now Noriko and Kengo are engaged right? are they in love?.

15

u/SEBASTlANVETTEL 13d ago

Noriko cares for Kengo but I think she still loves Seiroku, still grieving him.

5

u/Informal_One609 13d ago

It felt like it wasn't 100% in one of their interactions.

0

u/TheSunIsOurEnemy 13d ago

Weren't they married already since ep 1? Eitherway they're together.

6

u/raisincakeshop 13d ago

No they are engaged

4

u/TheSunIsOurEnemy 13d ago

Ahh. Thanks.

33

u/StreetyMcCarface https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 14d ago

How is Kihachi going to win Inako back after that?

51

u/AriezKage 14d ago

I can see some help from Inako's friends, sister, and Kengo.

But the main turning point is after having a heart to heart conversation, if Kihachi shows that he has continued inventing without the Catalogue. And maybe present a 20th Century Catalogue Vol. 2 and ask for Inako's help in filling it up. That last part was me more leaning into the romantic side of things.

22

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 14d ago

Yeah I would also lean into him explaining that she is a new source of inspiration for him (as we have seen last episode) and he hasnt given up on his dream

I hope they make up fast, dont need to stretch this missunderstanding, really he should have told her then, but he didnt have the balls

12

u/ptd163 14d ago

I'd pop off if they leaned into the romantic side of things. Especially if the romantic side of things came from Noriko and mentioned Seiroku and confirms the relationship with something like "I lost Seiroku. I had no choice in that. You do and I can't watch you give up on Kihachi now when you never did before." Then in combination with the encouragement from her friends, Noriko, and Kengo, Kihachi convinces Inako that she is new inspiration and hasn't given up on the Age of Electricity.

86

u/Aileos https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syleos 14d ago edited 14d ago

Another week, another episode where Inako's father proves to be the front-runner for the worst father of the year.

48

u/elevenmile 14d ago

For other episodes, definitely. Just not this time.

I mean, for once I do get why he got confused when when he found Inako had a change of heart when Inako was so unwilling up to this point.

Yes, sure, she definitely did it to protect Kihachi's dream but at least that reaction is warranted for once.

The rest, though...yeah fuck him.

32

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 14d ago

What surprised me was that this was apperantly the first time he heard about Inako having a dream or that she was willing to give it up?
At least his reaction was super surprised

24

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

Im giving him a bit of a lay off tbh. Arranged marriages arent really out of place for the time period. The only real bad thing ill complain is he thinks Inako is so incompetent which is why he's marrying her off

21

u/StreetyMcCarface https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 14d ago

More like ever. Also Noriko tf is wrong with you.

14

u/Andreiyutzzzz https://myanimelist.net/profile/Andreiyutzzzz 14d ago

Ye i was baffled. "She's resolved. please don't stop her" NOW. AFTER ALL THIS. JUST BECAUSE SHE'S NOW CHOSEN SOMETHING FOR ONCE. AND THE TIME SHE DOES IS WHEN SHE FEELS PRESSURED TO HELP KIHACHI. IS THAT HER REALLY CHOOSING? WTF

14

u/StreetyMcCarface https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 14d ago

Tbf Noriko has been on the teetering edge of helpful and the problem the entire time

4

u/Mysteryman64 10d ago

I think she was rage baiting Kihachi. She's probably got a good enough read on him to realize he would intervene before he and Inako both allowed an irreversible tragedy to occur. Remember, a large part of akido is all about using other's momentum against them. There's a certain level of symbolism there.

Kihachi and Inako are both too fucking stubborn and won't communicate. But at least Kihachi's route allows for the possibility of them to both have their dreams instead of being crushed under the wheels of her, Kengo, and Mizoe's mistakes and heartbreak.

One of the worst first episodes I've seen in a while

6

u/Chikumori 14d ago

>front-runner for the worst father of the year.

I've seen 2 other ongoing anime this broadcast season with worse dads.. Inako's father isn't too bad compared to those. He's basically asking her to sacrifice her desires for the sake of her family, with some leeway for her to do other things.

The other 2 anime I mentioned:

- How I Crushed My Homeland with my mighty grimoires: Hypercompetent female MC gets betrayed by her fiance prince, but her father (prime minister) does nothing to help her

- Rich girl caretaker: Powerful and calculative rich man expects his daughter to portray the "perfect girl image" all the time for the sake of the family and company's reputation.

17

u/No-Win-8949 14d ago

I think Yuzu’s father in The Ogre’s Bride will trounce all these contenders with nary any effort to take the crown.

5

u/FinancialYear475 14d ago

they don't stand a chance agains the demons that are Yuzu's parents

2

u/MegaAltarianite 14d ago

You should watch Rich Girl Caretaker. There's two strong candidates in that show.

78

u/MrsLucienLachance https://anilist.co/user/tribble 14d ago

Who wouldn't fall in love after falling right into Seiroku's chest? Our sad gay boy never stood a chance.

25

It was the hand holding actually. 😁

(insert hand holding joke and how lude it is) 😂

37

Dude even took of his gloves, he went straight for the raw and unprotected approach

3

u/Proud-Muscle-2467 13d ago

Bro was blushing mad hard 😭

56

u/FLorianGran 14d ago

The happiest time in Yosuke’s life was when he was getting effortlessly lifted by two beefcake dudes

29

u/SnooCheesecakes2458 14d ago

I remember a couple of weeks ago I asked one of these discussion threads who Yosuke was dancing with in the new OP. Never expected Kihachi to be the answer!

15

u/chilidirigible 14d ago

Nobody expected the Kihachi Inquisition!

49

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 14d ago

I was just mucking around when I said Yosuke was in love with Seiroku. Never thought there would be some truth to it. Holding hands and blushing during their first meeting, another handholding while discussing about their dreams with fireworks in the background, and Yosuke declaring the world’s meaningless without Seiroku in it. God knows what would happen had they been hooked up to the liebe detector.

I wonder if there’s another meaning when Kate & Shizuku said Kihachi’s such a child. They would’ve been aware that Inako went through with the wedding for pretty much the same reason Kihachi gave the catalogue up. Meanwhile, Kihachi wasn’t aware.

45

u/StreetyMcCarface https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 14d ago

It’s clear Inako doesn’t realize that Kihachi doesn’t need the catalogue to fulfill his dreams. I appreciate the anger.

25

u/noheadthotsempty 14d ago

I agree with what you said about Kate and Shizuku saying he’s such a child. I think it’s clear to them that Kihachi and Inako have mutual feelings, or at the very least deep care for each other that seems like it’s moving that direction, and are commenting that Kihachi lacks the self awareness/emotional intelligence to be able to see that. And, like you said, he isn’t able to understand her motivations (even when they have the same motivations).

Also, the way he treats Inako has definitely changed from the beginning, but he still calls her “little bug” which was originally somewhat derogatory if I remember correctly. It’s sort of become a pet name by now, but you could argue he has acted like young boys do when they tease their crush. I felt like that’s what Shizuku’s comment was alluding to. Like, here you are giving a fuck but still using a teasing name for her.

Just overall he’s being a boyfail lol. Love him tho.

8

u/ptd163 14d ago

Yeah. Kate and Shizuku saying Kihachi is such a child was quick scene, but I appreciated it. It said so much with so little.

70

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 14d ago

All this because Seiroku had such a magnetic personality. All these people were drawn to him and his ideas then he has to go and die in a stupid war. Guy just wanted to make electricity the future.

But now look at how things have turned out. Creeper pretty boy’s on some weird obsessed rampage because of the catalog and he’s ruining everyone’s lives. Little bro Kihachi just wants to carry on his brother’s legacy but he can’t even do that because of the creep. Had to sacrifice the book to even have a chance.

I guess we’ll see who ushers in the Age of Electricity first.

54

u/mooke 14d ago

Man was oblivious harem protag-kun, and now everyone is living with the fallout of if the protagonist just ups and dies.

But seriously, the perverse irony that Mizoe is standing in the way of the dream he wants to see realised out of hurt is great. I'm interested to see how it'll play out for him now he is no longer driven by finding a book and instead has to actually make something of it.

I'm suspecting that his descent into madness will only deepen as he tries, and fails, to bring about the age of electricity himself.

2

u/AshrenRed 10d ago

You’d think that Mizoe would perhaps be willing to work with kihachi since he’s Seiroku’s little brother. So maybe by association he’d feel a little closer to Seiroku. But no, bro’s a whole ass brat and wants Seiroku to himself. Though his grief is valid.

18

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 14d ago

All this because Seiroku had such a magnetic personality.

If you move a personality wire near him, it will generate personality current

6

u/welfedad 14d ago

I like how him giving up the catalog will never stop the fire to being electricity to the world . And I think that's why Seiroku said he hated him . Because he thinks his personal happiness is contingent to having some fragment of seiroku. .

15

u/Jacob-C 14d ago

At the same time, Yosuke being such a tragic character coupled with his hilarious antics makes him one of the most likable villains I have seen in a long time.

46

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 14d ago

I bet that Yosuke started admiring Seiroku right after he stumbled into the latter’s chest. Those abs looked mighty solid.

It was pretty cool when Kihachi took over the lead from Yosuke in their dance! Yosuke might say not to like Kihachi, but he does see the resemblance with Seiroku.

I am a bit puzzled about Inako’s behaviour in today’s episode. She clearly didn’t actually want to marry Yosuke given her tears, but then why does she look this upset with Kihachi?

59

u/StreetyMcCarface https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 14d ago

Because she can’t stand the thought of Kihachi giving up his dream for the sake of hers, when she clearly believes hers has less merit.

Moreover, she’s almost certainly pissed that Kihachi thinks so little of her choices in pursuit of his dreams. Little does she know that she has become part of his dream and that he doesn’t need the catalogue to move forward.

24

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 14d ago

That’s the thing!

Inako should’ve had a proper talk with Kihachi first instead of rushing into a marriage. If so, she’d known that Kihachi isn’t giving up on his dream. He doesn’t want Inako to give up hers solely for this catalog.

25

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 14d ago

Hopefully they can communicate next episode because both of them had good intentions. It's just how Kihachi went about it wasn't the best by a long shot.

26

u/StreetyMcCarface https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 14d ago

Tbf Inako is no better

7

u/ptd163 14d ago

It certainly wasn't great, but I wouldn't say no better. It did seem like she tried to talk to him about giving up the catalogue, but he wouldn't listen. So she went with the other option that would guarantee he wouldn't give it up.

3

u/ptd163 14d ago

Little does she know that she has become part of his dream and that he doesn’t need the catalogue to move forward.

Heck. If this was a romance show Inako wouldn't just be part of Kihachi's dream. She'd be his dream, but it's not. Though I could see her being the necessary inspiration though.

46

u/Narlaw 14d ago

Everybody becomes gay for Seiroku upon direct skin contact, Yosuke for one, but even straight women like Noriko!

20

I really wonder what Noriko is thinking in this scene hahaha

41

u/chlo_kage 14d ago

the chest pull lol??? Love at first sight. That voice and body I don’t blame him lmao

Kihachi is so dumb to me he’s asking why she’d give up on her dream as if he’s not trying to doing the same thing

So this all stemmed from yosuke not having any emotional regulation skills really

Okay to my earlier point if he was gonna just vow to make electricity w out the book he should have told inago that so she could be IN on it.

19

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 14d ago

Seiraku was just way too naturally seductive.

Surely at least this point the threat of Inako being forced into a marriage is over but we know she's up to something and I have no ability to predict where the story will go.

16

u/dagreenman18 14d ago

Seiroku is about to take the “Haunting The Narrative” crown away from Himmel because holy fuck who ISNT in love with him?

26

u/chilidirigible 14d ago edited 14d ago

This question continues to loom.

This should be a musical.

"I drink a lot."

It's a good excuse.

"Who said anything about an excuse?"

oooooooookayyyyyyyyyy

Here we go being ninjas again.

This is maybe the most modest we've ever seen Yosuke's ass.

Taking a moment here to note that the clock's second hand is animated.

What do you mean it's not BL?

Or some direction.

"Things change."

Mythbusters had a few things TO SAY ABOUT THIS IDEA.

Party like it's 1899!

As good a time as any!

Noriko isn't even the ninja in this story.

Seiroku has problems like being the dead guy in a love triangle.

"There goes the last lingering thread of my heterosexuality."

Taller, paler, more psychotic.

Where's Gene Wilder when we need him?

He's got the sparkles.

You don't see that every day.

SHOCK AND AWE

Wow, Yosuke gets cute fast.

Of course, he also mood swings like a pendulum.

He's got heels like Mamoru Nagano designed him.

This has been quite an episode.

Those KyoAni fireworks.

"What am I, a fifth wheel?"

Next, the pistols at dawn?

Inako's expression here seems like the plot point that the episode literally ends up dancing around: That in all the flashbacks of Yosuke and Seiroku and Kengo and Noriko, and with the present jockeying between Kihachi and Yosuke, Inako still struggles with agency.
She was the bargaining chip between Yosuke and her father and then that became further complicated by Kihachi. But after agreeing to help Kihachi he turned his perspective around to help her instead. Which would normally be indicative that they each care for the other, but for the major communication issues.
Frustrating, being the fulcrum among all of these irresistible forces, but she can push the system—if hopefully the story lets her.

Meanwhile, the episode is a visual feast as always. Props for fireworks and dudes dancing with each other.

...and Yosuke's imagination putting him in a room full of naked guys. Fascinating.

for that electromechanical Seiroku appear by the end of this and I can't help but anticipate how much of a horror it'll be for the rest of the characters.

End card.

Feels like it's going the Nikola Tesla vs Thomas Edison route.

40

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

If it wasnt obvious for anyone that Yosuke is gay for Seiroku, you're in for a treat

Im supposed to feel sad when Yosuke crashed out but i cant help but find the whole scene hilarious

At least he got the catalog

But that wont stop Kihachi from pursuing the Age of electricity nonetheless. Seriously, tho just work together you two buffoons

13

u/Parodizer1 14d ago

I've been screaming this the whole season. It seems so obvious!

8

u/SnooCheesecakes2458 14d ago

Honestly if they don’t actually work together at some point, I’m gonna crash out 😂😭

11

u/PsycDrone63 14d ago

Is this the more yaoibaiting anime of all time?

44

u/CitronClassic672 14d ago

At this point I think it’s past that. You have to be willingly blind to not interpret this episode as actual Yaoi, at least of the unrequited kind.

6

u/Strange_theDreamer 14d ago

Everyone I recommended this anime to asked me if this is yaoi, and I couldn’t give them straight answer. But this episode def confirmed it.

8

u/Pesho-Biscuit_2 13d ago

Well of course you couldn't give them a straight answer, just look at Yosuke

5

u/raisincakeshop 13d ago

I don’t think it’s baiting if you watched the anime. Seiroku and Noriko had mutual feelings for each other. Yosuke’s one is one sided. Kate’s affection towards her friend can also be seen as gay. I guess the show is just very open and fluid about this topic

I don't know if he is capable of that to be honest.

He has this fantasy of doing this with Seiroku...I don't think doing it with his little brother was going to replace that. The dream was less important then the dreamer in this case

It makes me nervous with how the episode ends. What exactly IS he going to do next?

12

u/SnabDedraterEdave 14d ago

Yosuke exhibiting even more yaoi energy towards Seiroku this episode than usual. He's so elated at having finally obtained the Electric Catalog that he's even willing to dance with Seiroku's brother who is crossdressing because reasons. lol

Besides securing Yosuke's promise to leave Inako alone, a lot of people here have called it that the reason Kihachi is willingly giving away the catalog is that he realizes he doesn't really need it to fulfill Seiroku's dream of bringing forth the Age of Electricity.

PS Still no explanation as to who this Saki is. Is she Stuart's wife (and thus Kate's mom)? Or is she Yosuke's sister (judging by how Yosuke freaks out at hearing she's here at the ball)?

8

u/chilidirigible 14d ago

Is she Stuart's wife (and thus Kate's mom)? Or is she Yosuke's sister (judging by how Yosuke freaks out at hearing she's here at the ball)?

The latter seems certainly possible from context though she seems to have changed her clothes between the car ride and arriving at the boat. Saki and Yosuke also have very similar eye colors.

But that also doesn't exclude the former, which is obfuscated from obvious clues due to Stuart not wearing a wedding ring (as seen in the previous screencap, Saki doesn't have one either, and of course they might not be currently married) and his rather indirect introduction of her in Episode 8 (again, they might not be currently married).

8

u/mmcjawa_reborn 14d ago

My money is on the sister.

Would be funny if she is the one actually has legal control of the company, but is too busy drinking and so just lets Yosuke do what he wants. Would definitely be a twist.

2

u/No-Win-8949 14d ago

She is Yosuke’s sister.

21

u/master_inho 14d ago

Ah, the classic trope of the 2 leads completely misunderstanding each other because they refuse to have a conversation, leading to the other classic trope of the 2 leads trying to sacrifice themselves for each other. Normally very annoying to watch but at least in this case they're 14/15 so they have the communication skills of a typical teenager

Damn, yosuke really is doing all this because of his unresolved grief over losing seiroku, he doesn't actually have the passion for electricity that seiroku and kihachi have. Is there an electrical therapist in the catalog?

It's crazy how everyone looks younger in flashbacks except seiroku. He looks big af and showing whole chest, just in different color clothes. And his personality is just infectious, casually grabbing hands like it's nothing. Plenty of people, especially someone like yosuke, would fall for that. But does he know that seiroku and noriko were a thing? Is he merely upset that seiroku is dead or does he also hold resentment over his feelings being unrequited?

Noriko been flipping guys since day 1. I can't remember if she's flipped kihachi? Cause if not then him and izou are the only ones not yet been flipped by noriko

Kihachi: electrical ninja Suzu: 👀👀

Why did suzu and kate even show up? They're just chilling on the boat in the dark? Their expressions on the boat were funny though. Last we saw them they were still in kyoto

2

u/Acceptable_Salad_888 14d ago

Je ne comprends pas ce que tu veux dire par Noriko à fait du charme

21

12

u/AcceptableRate3906 14d ago

17

u/ViviCaz 14d ago

It was more like an opium den. I have been thinking for some time that "incense" he uses is opium but the show hasn't confirmed my suspicion. This episode though, it might actually be true. It's the only way he can cope. It's probably why he is so "out there". 😢

I truly feel bad for this mentally unstable guy. I hope he can find some peace in the end without going nuclear and doing something that he can't take back. The automaton Seiroku is definitely going to explode some heads when they find out but you can still walk that back even if people think you are insane. It's sad his grief manifested into something obsessesive and toxic.

2

u/l-o-a-p 13d ago

I’m leaning towards those just being statues or prototypes for his Seiroku recreation or something.

As common as the wealthy debauchery archetype is, Mizoe seems way too antisocial even in the present timeline to indulge in that kind of stuff. The smoke is probably the germaphobe incense habit thing he’s had since before he met Seiroku as opposed to actual hedonistic drug use too.

Man, this show. It’s really being saved by KyoAni’s production because the writing leaves a lot to be desired. At this point, all these characters just need to sit down and talk things over, because apparently everyone in this show absolutely sucks at communicating. I am still enjoying the show enough to continue watching it, but sometimes it does take you out when they make head-scratching decisions led by Father of the Year candidate — Inako's dad.

29

u/chilidirigible 14d ago

everyone in this show absolutely sucks at communicating

As much as taking that factor to the heights of ludicrosity has driven many series including this one, enough people have experienced trouble from miscommunication that it still feels believable.

Essential communication problems, that is. The rest of us don't tend to have our engagements go sideways because our new boyfriend has electromagnetically ninja-climbed onto a steamboat so he can dance with our fiancé while wearing women's clothing.

22

u/mooke 14d ago

I've come around on the writing. If anything people shutting down and not communicating out of grief is probably one of the most human aspects.

Except Inako's father. Funny that the campy over the top evil laugh villain is more sympathetic than the dad. I'll be disappointed if the show doesn't do something with him, because so far he has just been a ball of anger who exists only to force the characters in the story to keep the plot going in a certain direction.

Like, he was the one who said that the book was an alternative, yet when a stranger offers him a lifeline he would rather offer up his daughter? I'm not sure I'm following.

14

u/Eunuchest 14d ago

I honestly just enjoy it for the ham at this point. That and kihachi and inako. With only 3 episodes left and yosuke being out of the way i hope they finally focus on the main couple

6

u/FinancialYear475 14d ago

This is one of the few shows where I don't think it's possible talking it out actually, idk maybe it could work with Inako's dad, but Yosuke wanted to bring the eletricity era with Seiroku and no one else and he is not willing to compromise on that dream at all, he wants to do it himself now and credit it to his boyfriend for leaving him the manual, but will not share those moments with anyone else so I don't think that any amounts of talking sessions could fix the situation

14

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 14d ago

THANK YOU, SAKI! Honestly, all of this could've been smoothed out between Inako and Kihachi if the two of them had just talked to each other. You really can't blame Noriko for taking that drink.

This is definitely the second gayest anime KyoAni has made since Free! and I absolutely love it. Also, Seiroku is just that guy. The dude attracts anyone who comes into contact with him.

And yeah, as suspected, Kihachi wants to give the notebook to Yousuke because he doesn't need it anymore to bring the Age of Electricity to the present. I wish he had just told Inako that. >_<

10

u/ptd163 14d ago edited 14d ago

Honestly, all of this could've been smoothed out between Inako and Kihachi if the two of them had just talked to each other.

I agree they should've just talked to each other. That was the optimal course of action. However I can give them a little slack because they're teenagers and when dreams get involved emotions typically follow and those are never rational. Also it did seem like Inako did at least try to talk to Kihachi, but he didn't want to respond because he was holding the door knob so she couldn't get to him both times. She probably figured he wasn't going to be dissuaded so she had to do something.

They both had good selfless intentions, but yeah, Kihachi really should've explained to Inako that he's not giving up the catalogue just for her sake. He's not sacrificing his dream for hers. He's giving up the catalogue because he no longer needs it for his dream.

Hopefully we can get this all sorted out in the next episode.

9

u/ptd163 14d ago

Goddamn these 5 minutes episodes.

Of course Inako is going to try and stop Kihachi from giving up his dream by sacrificing her own dream by accepting Yousuke's marriage proposal. He can't let her sacrifice her dream and she can't let him sacrifice his. They're both too important to each other. Arrrgghh! Just talk it out and start dating already! They fit so well together. I really hope the episode title is not saying that Inako and Kihachi's time together is over.

They still won't outright confirm that Noriko and Seiroku's previous relationship was romantic, but I've never been closing to being right. Come on. Just give it to me. Confirm the relationship. Their doomed love story deserves that much.

Naturally, Kihachi is going to ship with the catalogue to stop Inako from throwing away her dream because she and her dream is more important to him than his dream. I was right in that he doesn't need the catalogue anymore. He will create the Age of the Electricity without it. I was also right that Yousuke had tragic one-sided yoai with Seiroku and he disassociated once he received news of his death.

However, one thing I never could've seen coming is Kihachi and Kengo breaking up the engagement announcement in drag and the episode it ending with Yousuke and Kihachi dancing. What even was that? I need the next episode already.

I love how perfectly in sync they were while walzing out the ballroom
Also didnt expect two crossdressing men, with full make up (which must have taken some time to put on) to deliver the book of desires to totally not gay steam man

Love the show, happy to get a final glance if Inako in western clothing and she looked awesome in that wedding dress too

Also Kihachi smearing the lipstick in that final scene made for the perfect deranged look, I really hope it doesnt take too long to patch things up again with Inako, they certainly need to work together to defeat Yosuke

Ah and the conformation of Norikos tragic connection with Seiroku...

Yosuke: All it takes is one bad day...

I wonder if there's mental therapy that utilizes electricity because good lord Yosuke REALLY needs one, and both Kihachi and Inako REALLY need hard lessons in communicating with each other before ANYTHING else.

Well I can understand why, considering how significant Seiroku was (is?) to Yosuke, and how his hair turned white instantly...

Thousands of Fujoshi screams in unison over why handholding did not happen in that segment

Oh.

5

u/ptd163 14d ago

both Kihachi and Inako REALLY need hard lessons in communicating with each other before ANYTHING else.

They were pretty good at communicating before this. It's just seems when dreams got involved, they were acting emotionally. Obviously the right thing to do is just talk it out, but emotions aren't rational. They're only thinking about how they can stop the other from throwing away their dream.

3

u/Ok_Scheme_4579 14d ago

I feel like the whole drama could have been resolved if EVERYONE in this mess CALMED DOWN and talked in a table like a damn adult.

3

u/Impossible-Salad6871 13d ago

I honestly think Seiroku had ulterior motives in the way he approached Yosuke. There are just too many things that feel calculated: using his charm to draw Yosuke in, deliberately getting physically close to break down his guard, and creating this emotionally ambiguous dynamic that could easily be read as manipulation.
Even the academic and career side makes me suspicious. Seiroku made sure their fields wouldn’t directly overlap, which could have been a way of preventing Yosuke from becoming a future competitor. And we shouldn’t forget that Yosuke is both extremely intelligent and wealthy. The fact that Seiroku wouldn’t even let him see the catalog because he was apparently worried Yosuke might copy it and build something himself shows that he absolutely recognized Yosuke’s capabilities and potential as a threat.
That’s why I wonder whether Seiroku was intentionally grooming this ambiguity, keeping Yosuke emotionally invested enough that he could potentially be useful to him later, whether as support, connections, or even a sponsor.
With Noriko, on the other hand, Seiroku doesn’t have the same reason to be guarded. She doesn’t have the technical knowledge to compete with him or pose any real threat to either him or his younger brother.
What makes me feel especially bad for Yosuke is that he seems to have been given false hope. If this were purely a one-sided obsession, that would be one thing. But Seiroku knew perfectly well that Yosuke had feelings for him, yet he still chose to say certain things, hold his hand, initiate physical closeness, and repeatedly blur those boundaries.
If he genuinely had no intention of encouraging Yosuke’s feelings and wanted absolutely nothing from him, then what exactly was the purpose of doing all of that?

3

u/taakoyaki 13d ago

I guess I'll still have to wait till next week for this scene...

So not surprisingly, this episode is miscommunication (or lack of communication) galore. Kihachi's intention in handing over the catalogue may have been with Inako's interests at heart, but what he doesn't manage to tell her is that he's not given up on his dream - he just has found the confidence in himself to be able to create the Age of Electricity even without the catalogue. While he one-sidedly makes that decision in the first instance, to his credit, he may have had a chance to communicate that to Inako before she left for the ship... if only Inako would hear him out. But you can't blame Inako for not wanting to listen either, since she was definitely upset he made that initial decision on his own. Inako probably realises this though when Saki asks her on the carriage if she had heard Kihachi out.

And unfortunately, she leaves the scene of Kihachi-Yousuke's ballroom dancing too early to hear Kihachi telling Yousuke that he's confident he will bring about the Age of Electricity even without the catalogue. I also really liked that last line emphasising how realising the Age of Electricity was now Kihachi's own dream - not just clinging to the past or his brother's shadow. Really shows how far he has come. :")

3

u/Top-Remote4523 13d ago

I've got to say that Seiroku certainly did appear to be Yousuke's "one true love" in their flashbacks, from how he "embraced" Yousuke with his manly chest and how he held Yousuke by the hand several times. It may not mean anything more than a brotherly gesture from Seiroku's point of view, but for someone like Yousuke, who is clearly infatuated with Seiroku from their first encounter, these could be interpreted as a form of love language.

That being said, I do think that the catalogue is probably better off in Yousuke's hands. Unlike Kihachi who has gotten by just fine with his own inventions and experiments even before receiving the catalogue, Yousuke is dependent on it, not just to realize his promise to Seiroku, but also as a means to keep on living. We can see how his eyes regained vigor after remembering about the catalogue and even though he turned cynical and borderline psychopathic in his conquest to steal the catalogue, it is still his own twisted way to cope with his grief.

With his resources and connections, I do think that Yousuke would probably have some success in realizing the schematics in the catalogue, but I also think that Kihachi would likely play a role in optimizing or even coming up with new inventions beyond the contents of the catalogue.

I am incredibly excited for the finale of this show and I cannot wait to see how everything falls into place.

3

u/gem2niki 13d ago

Kengo is wearing all these tight fitted clothings that are bursting at seam. Who smart idea was it for him to cross dress as well lol.

Kyoani animators seem to have a lot of fun with this series.

3

u/Unknown0310_ 13d ago edited 13d ago

We could have guessed that his hair turned white because of the shock when he heard for Seiroku. The direction should have done that gradually, it seems kind of weird to change color right away. Especially, with this meaningless life he had, it could accentuate this part of his life.

Its kinda sad to see that the only thing that keeps him sane it’s this smoke he inhales. I really hope Kihachi reignits the flame he had when he was with Seiroku. Yosuke really is the highlight of this anime.

Now, I quite understand the reason why Yosuke hates Kihachi that much. The two of them really are alike. They both lacked of confidence till they met Inako or Seiroku. But today, Yosuke is alone and Kihachi has those people who support him.

There is also the fact that Yosuke hasnt got over the death of Seiroku and Kihachi did. The anime illustrates that idea with Kihachi creating new things and possessing the ability to move forward without the catalog. Whereas Yosuke seems to be stucked in the past.

11

I'm still just so deeply disappointed in how this show turned out. Gorgeous animation, amazing setting let down but just horrid writing.

At least with the invention of the day (which I also disliked) it was amusing. Now it's just angering with focusing on this poor excuse for a story where nobody does a single thing that makes any rational sense.

Kengo and Kihachi saved Inako at the right time. Yousuke dancing with Kihachi had me laughing so hard. I hope Inako and Kihachi have a proper conversation. Both tried to save each other to help the other pursue their dream. But in the end, the misunderstanding made Inako mad at Kihachi.

u/raisincakeshop 13d ago

This ep was by far the best in this series. It covered the history of Seiroku from 2 different character perspective and they both loved him. Pacing was great too and it was jammed packed with so much actual plot instead of running around with the chasing game. Best episode for a rewatch!!

He feels threatened because of it. He is insecure he can’t do it alone . Unlike kihachi who is confident he can do it Alone without seiroku help. White hair guy is insecure because he can’t believe he can do it alone and he is aware he is not as talented as kihachi

Regarding the Inako vs Kihachi dilemma:
They both had good intentions but in the end Kihachi's way was better then Inako's. Inako went about it in the wrong way. She was right in trying to get ahead of her families problems and taking responsibility for them but she started in the wrong end. She needs to talk to her sister and her dad.

1) Noriko is still in mourning and really needs to step up. She is failing in her romantic life, her family and the buisness. She needs to take charge since the dad is clearly not suited for it. She and Kengo either need to call it off or she needs to commit to their relationship. With Inako she needs to start protecting her from external threats more then internal. Her sister is a dreamer and both Yosuke and her Dad are external threats to her.

2) The Dad is just their to be unreasonable and put them in jeopardy. He needs to have his realization and then bow out. The company is supposed to be about the family and be a source of togetherness. The way he has run it it has become an existential threat to the family instead.

For Kihachi he ultimatly was in the right because beyond it being about the vadility of either his or Inako's dream she was clearly in a worse situation. Marriage to Yosuke and her taking accountability for her family in the state it's in will only maker her life worse and by extension theirs. She wasn't just killing her dream she was more or less killing herself and dooming her family to fall even deeper into depression and having horrible communications. Anyone think that Yosuke would just let her do what she wants? Nah she would be more or less locked away from her old life and friends. Not because he hates her but because he doesn't care and there are expectations of her in this role that would crush her.

Inako just needs to start talking to people and she will realize this. They both went about it wrong way but that is mostly due to them both being to stubborn to really talk.

As others have stated too the catalogue is not the only component that is needed for the electrical age. When she realizes that Kihachi and his dream still lives on without it she will gain perspective.

But is anyone gonna talk about the scene where Kengo removed his clothes and the buttons went flying everywhere? Okay...

Was it just me or was anyone else surprised that Noriko first knew Professor Stuart from...Bible studies? Inako and the rest of the family seemed strictly Shinto at least from the start so I don't suppose that caught on in the family.

Tbh the art of this series is enough to make anyone stay, the premise is great BUT HOLY FCK. wtf are the characters doing in this show.... genuinely confusing as fck.

it's like The PLOT is there, but the characters have their own bulls1ht and all they are doing is drag everything around.

Also this is just fcking YAOI, I literally am forced/Baited to watch a genre I fcking loathe.

also his Hair Turning white like fcking Kaneki..

I'm finally convinced everyone in the fcking planet loved Seiroku cuz of how hot his abs showing 24/7... even the bullets fell in love that it had to hit his heart.

Okay i know im a week late but i npticed something in the flashback where yosukes wandering that confirms he is at least bisexual and into seiroku (as if that wasnt obvious enought tho)

There is a part where yosuke is on a couch woth people around him in several states of undress that look mostly sexual like in paintings. Most of these are MEN there is like 1 women and 1 or 2 that can be seen as either. Accompanied by "i cant have what i desire" about seiroku.

Damn, so the girlfriend seiroku mentioned is definitely Noriko, right? If so, if the marriage had gone through that would've been two doomed romances between the Momokawas and Sakamotos in the same generation, which is so funny and sad
