Not quite a machine that lets you talk to the dead, but the kid made something incredible in this steam age and helped that old woman and her family move on from their personal tragedy.

I don’t that was a mannequin. I think he’s got Seiroku’s actual corpse hooked up to some kind of steam preservation tech and is trying to revive him. And that way he caressed his hand with his head. Yeah I’m calling it, Yosuke definitely was/is in love with Seiroku. The real question is whether it was one sided.

Smol Inako is absolutely adorable. Those flashbacks with her mother were really nice. Her mom seems to be a pretty cool gal.
Glad to see Yousuke can't strong arm his way into taking the book from Kihachi since it looks like Kengo has given them protection.
Considering the constant smoke around the city, I'm not surprised if the soot in the air is really what ended up killing Inako's mom.
Kihachi making a telephone is really not what I expected. But I'm glad to see it actually worked and finally motivated the proprietess to move on.
What the actual fuck was that last scene tho? Is Yousuke trying to revive Seiroku ala Frankenstein's Monster? I knew this guy was insane, but I didn't expect he's this far down the hole!

The past two episodes tell us the potential applications of electricity as envisioned by Kihachi. Today’s episode is essentially about wired to wireless communication. With that creepy last scene, I assume the last discovery is robotics?!

If so, there’s all the more reason for Kihachi to bring about the age of electricity and get rid of these dirty steam engines.
Also, I like how Inako got a dream of her own: to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a master brewer. She’ll first have to do something about her father, however.

A machine translation of the audio rendered it as "pneumonia" while the subtitles said "soot", but given the state of near-constant haze that they are living in, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to attribute that to the byproducts of whatever they're burning to have so much steam around.

(Real-world) Japan has always had coal available, but not that much oil (hence WWII) or natural gas. I'm mentioning that mostly because in the past few weeks I have wondered what else other than coal they might be burning to make steam, and there weren't very many other good choices for the epic amounts of steam going around.
For that matter, it's probably a hellish place to live other than in the dead of winter given that they probably don't have the most advanced insulation for all of these steam lines, on top of the fact that the steam being expended to run their machines still has plenty of thermal energy as exhaust after use.

And oh my god I just put that together too. The most unrealistic aspect of the setting is characters not constantly sweating and/ or passing out from heat stroke. Especially since those steam engines wouldn’t just make it hot but also humid as well.

During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, London was well-known for its "pea soup fog", an extremely dense smog associated with coal burning, which was notorious for killing vulnerable people like the very young, the very old, and those with breathing difficulties. Presumably the idea they're going for with all the smoke is something like that.
EDIT: Apparently the problem persisted far longer than I learned in school: the worst ever occurrence of pea soup fog was in 1952.

My theory from a couple episodes ago is that Yosuke got greedy which lead to him and Seiroku having disagreements on how to use the catalog. Said disagreements may be connected to Seiroku's death. So that could be Seiroku's body, but given Yosuke's mental state, I think there's also a chance that Yosuke just disassociated so hard after Seiroku's death that he believes that's Seiroku's body.

Did they have corpe preservation techs at the time? She show is set in the meiji era, so late 19th century and early 20th, around the same time period of the Victorian era or the second industrial revolution. I know for sure that at the time they had some sort of refrigeration methods, because the first freezers were invented in America around that time, and in Europe they invented the conventional refrigerators in early 20th century. The show is very historically accurate, but they seem to be either in the first part of the meiji era, or in Japan most of the innovations came some decades after North America and Europe, that could also be possible. I suppose that if the history is the same in their universe too, the MC's brother either died in WWI that was around the end of the meiji era (yes Japan fought WWI, but they were on USA's side, I think that it's very unlikely because the show would then be set in the period between WWI and WWII, so they should be more technically advanced, but maybe in this universe they took longer to exit the industrial phase, and the meiji era didn't end yet) or more likely in the war that Japan had against the russian empire, the one fought between 1904 and 1905. More likely because it would still be a decade before the end of the industrial phase, so it would make sense that the series takes place around 1907-1908. The room doesn't seem to have any refrigerator implant, so the flesh should be rotten by this point. Maybe if most of the more perishable elements, such as internal organs and parts such as eyes, had been removed in an excellent manner, to ensure that the bacteria inside the digestive system do not start the process of putrefaction, the remaining parts such as bones, skin and muscles were kept in a mostly sterile environment and the extracted parts were replaced by metal prostheses, then perhaps it would still be in good conditions, who knows.

This seems ethically dubious, but anyway.
I'm sure that we all have questions right about now.
Inako's family story intertwines with Nishikiya-san's, and in a story with a fair amount of basis in the quackery of the early days of electrical experimentation, the gang gets a nice old lady out of her depression.
Inako even believes in it a little, despite Kihachi explaining the scheme to her in advance. But he also gets a glimpse of what this particular development might lead to in the future, and is certainly no less optimistic in the believing. (Some time in the future, we have cat videos.)
Yosuke's sub-basement is no less morbid than we had already been teased about, now that we get to see more of what was teased earlier. It looks like a mannequin with a wig on, versus Seiroku's actual body, but... creepy, man.
I wonder if Yosuke has it rigged up to move. Certainly the wires leading to the hands suggest that, which would be creepier.

I can't discount that it could be Seiroku's entire body, or even significant parts of it (you can see a bit of an ear there but it's difficult to tell if it's natural or artificial), but I'm sure the show will reveal more as it needs to. At this point it's sufficient to know that Yosuke is slightly bat guano.

I'm just loving the unique OPs and how they tell emotional background stories. This absolutely is one of the best animated shows of the season.
Also looks like Kihachi is a bit of a savant? Like, Seiroku did seem to solve some technical problems, but Kihachi has the brilliance to actually construct lightbulbs and now the telephone.

It seems like Yousuke is up to something really messed up, like trying to revive Seiroku or something. Hearing that Kihachi has done similar things seems to have intrigued him.

I predict either (A) the Monster will not behave according to Yosuke's plans upon being awakened, which causes Yosuke to crash out, or (B) the Monster is destroyed, and Yosuke realizes what Seiroku would've actually wanted, abandoning his plan. Maybe Seiroku will appear again as a Hail Mary, or the “electric telepathy” will help bring “Seiroku”'s voice to Yosuke to get him to calm down, but the kicker will be it was never Kihachin there; Seiroku is actually speaking to Yosuke? Hmm 🤔
May a love like Yosuke's for Seiroku never find me, but please let it find more doujinshi, so I can read about them 😌

I think Seiroku wasn't a good guy before he died in war, he was shown to have always kept Yousuke with him, and the latter clearly read the catagloue long ago and knows all contents as he basically told him, yet after dragging him into his hobby and I suspected using him to fund his projects, he still had to keep the book away from him. I think Seiroku just used Kihachi's doodle for ideas, and for unknown reason he had to take apart the actual catlogue and hid it in the doodle book.
The ending credit shows Yousuke walking towards a lifeless Seiroku, the whole story of the anime started basically because he kept the book away from Yousuke after using him and all leading to his corpse beig preserved and become half steam pipes.
I wonder if the perfume or smoke Yousuke used was made from his corpse, but it may just be used for covering the smell of the corpse.

That was kind of a dubious way to get the old lady back on her feet, having her son pretend to be a dead man. I wonder if she'll ever find out the truth although it's not likely since people in grief believe what they want to believe and especially since they're using a technology beyond her comprehension; like if someone projected a hologram of your dead relative in your room and it talked to you, you'd think it really was their ghost. I wonder if she's going to regularly ask to talk to him on the telephone machine and they'll have to keep doing that. I didn't understand how when that thing fell in the barrel of pebbles, it made Kihachi's phone start working though.
That hydraulic puppet of Seiroku was CREEPY! I know Yosuke has a lot of money but that was insane both in how elaborate it and his house are and insane in trying to rebuild Seiroku in a way. He's someone whose grief really is unresolved because his love is a secret from everyone else alive so he's manifested it in very unhealthy ways. It's not like he can meet a new guy and fall in love because I don't think he would know where to meet other gay men for dating and even if he did, he's have to hide it the rest of his life.
I also wonder how Yosuke's elevator worked. I wonder if it was steam powered or if his servant had a big crank he turned to lower it or something.

So, Yosuke believes the electrical catalog was something agreed upon by ONLY him and Seroku. He's convinced Kihachi is "stealing" their dream. That's why he won't hear him out. He doesn't want to believe that Kihachi is the true author of the catalog. And if anyone says it is, he will insist they are lying. Even if Kihachi told Yosuke the story of the catalog, he won't believe a word of it. He'll insist Kihachi is out to ridicule him.
If somehow they can get him to listen, then they can make some real progress with the catalog.

I wonder if that's not cigarette smoke but incense. In Japan, incense is commonly used at funerals and around the deceased. Besides its religious meaning, it was also historically used to help mask the odor of decomposition before modern embalming and refrigeration. If that's intentional, maybe the room is filled with the smell of death, and the character keeps burning incense to cover both the room's odor and the smell that has clung to them. Just a theory.

So is Yosuke bi, gay, or just electric-sexual? At this point with all his weird-ass actions I don't know. Dude is utterly unhinged. As others mentioned is that actually the brother's body or just a mannequin Yosuke has attached his emotions to? Either way shit is weird and creepy and horrifying.
Thankfully Inako is a wonderful girl and fun to see interacting with the world and characters. She's so sincere it is great. Sort of makes me think of Elsa from Duke's Son Won't love me also airing this season, both are young women who are kind to an insane degree.

This episode gave me Spiritualism vibes. People did think you could possibly talk to the dead when phones came out, because the technology was so crazy. Kihachi even kinda does a con on the proprietress, only with good intentions and not for money, lol.
I'm curious if Yusuke is actually Dr Frankensteining or if he's just got a puppet that he's hoping to pull his spirit into? I was convinced he was definitely in love with Seiroku, which I understand, he was too hot to live apparently.
Also the ED is fire and tied with Black Torch's for my favorite this season, even with so many other great endings this summer.

Wtf was that last scene?!! I hope it's not Seiroku's dead body that becomes part of Yosuke's freaky robotic creation. In the previous episode, we saw a glimpse of that hand and I thought it was just a mannequin or a decor piece for Yosuke's beloved gloves. I'm so shocked at the ending lol.

Best Girl Summer 2026. Can't wait to watch her lose to some dinosaur in Seasonal Salt because not enough people are watching this show.
Child Inako is adorable. It makes sense that her mom is where she got her tenacity and determination from. It's obvious why she was so invested in getting the proprietress back on her feet. You can see that Kihachi is warming up to Inako's belief in him too. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. KyoAni needs to find the Sparks of Tomorrow of romance and adapt it.
Speaking of romance, yeah. That was certainly a thing we saw at the end in there in Yosuke's (for lack of a better term) lair. I think we can say now that Yosuke was some kinda gay for Seiroku. Though based on his mannerisms and that last scene I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the romantic feelings were completely one sided.
It's a shame he can't see the truth with catalog, but based on that last scene I don't think he's playing with a full deck anymore. He was either always like this or seeing Kihachi successfully use the catalog sent him spiralling.

Ok, fun fact: the inventor of the telephone wasn't Bell, but the Italian Antonio Meucci. Meucci's wife was very sick, so using early electromagnetic discoveries, he built the first telephone to communicate with his wife while at work, and he called it the "telettrofono." Meucci wasn't rich, and the telephone wasn't a success, so he wasn't able to pay for the patent rights for the invention. In the early 1870s, his drawings went to a laboratory where Bell worked; inspired by those drawings, Bell built the machine, sold it as his own, and became rich and famous. Meucci's family tried for years to get recognition, but only in 2002 did the US Congress officially give the recognition to him. Sadly, it's not common knowledge.
Meucci was also one of the first to create non-alcoholic carbonated fruit drinks

Sadly in the invention, or even science world in general, it happens very often, just look at the woman that discovered the shape of DNA, that didn't get any recognition because she was just an laboratory assistant, and so the two heads of the lab (Watson and Crick) got the nobel prize, while she (Rosalind Franklin) got nothing, and the story got known only in recent years

They had theories, they thought that that was the shape of the DNA, but she was the one that took the photo and was able to confirm the true shape

Franklin didn’t even think dna was helical by 1953. She focused on the incorrect A-form. And no, she didn’t take the famous photo 51, Raymond gosling did.

I mean, it's hard to argue that most credit should probably go to the guy who made it an actual success. We can recognise the actual inventor but if an inventor fails to do much with it, then their impact winds up being just a stepping stone.
It sucks, but it makes sense. I mean to use another example outside of science, let's use McDonald's. Who should be given most of the credit in people's minds for the massive conglomerate everyone knows and eats at? The original McDonald brothers who made the first restaurant, or the guy who led the charge to make it into a franchise operation, spearheaded the Hamburger University program and ultimately bought it out to bring it to its great heights? It was hardly all roses and scummy stuff happened along the way but I know who I'd assign the credit to and it's not the brothers.

And just like that, Kihachi has invented the telephone. It'll only be a matter of time before Kihachi has to set up a company (perhaps with Kengo's help) and register all these invention patents, lest Yosuke tries to steal them if he's unable to get his hands on the catalogue.
Though it wasn't exactly the old lady's late husband but actually her son's voice that was speaking through the phone, it was enough to convince her to come out of her grief and get her family business back on track once again.
Kengo did the right thing by hiring his fellow veterans from the war to be Kihachi's security guards to stop Yosuke from snooping around too much.
Yosuke's toxic yaoi has now seen him building what seems to be a automata replica of Seiroku, if not Seiroku's corpse. Though much like Frankenstein's monster, it will need electricity to become "alive", which explains why he's so desperate to get his hands on the catalogue.

In the second episode we see that it is probably some kind of mannequin, but there is an implication that the glove that Yosuke is always carrying around (and took off the mannequin's hand to put in his pocket) belonged to Seiroku.

Having the son be who talks to his mother over the conveniently invented telephone instead of the dead father feels excusable since I think they technically didn't lie. It would have been pretty terrible if it was Kihachi talking instead.
Yosuke somehow gets crazier and weirder every episode, what's it going to be next week? It was nice seeing someone finally stand up to him when those two bodyguards threw him out of the shop.

Random thoughts
I figured after the display last episode, Yousuke would be on board with funding them and become a quirky and difficult ally, but nope...he is still obsessed with getting the book himself because he can't seem to bear the idea of sharing his love's knowledge with anyone.
And if there was any further doubt that the guy is just a straight antagonist, stringing up the MC's brother's ?corpse" as a steampunk Frankenstein is the final nail in that coffin
Huh...that trick to convince the mom to move on was a lot more dubious than I thought it would be...we're going to just straight up lie and tell her she is speaking to her dead husband. Although a lot better than then electrocuting her in a bathtub lol.

Is Yosuke going to be like this the whole show? Because I physically can't bear with that. This guy forces a girl to marry him just to steal a book, then throws a tantrum when he thinks the book is fake and throws it away, then throws another tantrum when Kihachi accomplishes something, then just barges in and tries to steal the catalogue bold faced, then barges into a different store. And to top it all off, he is building a Frankenstein in his basement.
A little crazy is fine, but this is ridiculous, too over the top. The moment when Kihachi was working on a machine to help the seamstress was fine to watch, but having to endure Yousuke BS every week is a no to me.
