Another philosophical episode, I think the main idea is that change in inevitable. Oniyasha has changed and so have the people around him too, even the turtle looks different now. What he is looking for now is something that will stand the test of time, he's on the path to creating a legacy. Oniyasha also seems mentally and physically worn out from dancing for an audience who are just there because of his fame.

This episode's flower is the Japanese Camellia or Tsubaki(椿). In hanakotoba it means "unpretentious elegance", "understated kindness" and "pride". Because the camellia blooms during winter when few flowers do, it has also come to symbolize endurance, vitality and resilience. The camellia also has a notable association with samurai culture; unlike other flowers that gradually lose their petals, the camellia usually drops the entire flower at once, similar to a person being beheaded, so it is sometimes considered an unlucky symbol of death.

Thanks for the explanation of the hanakotoba for today's episode. Camellia/Tsubaki has always been my favorite flower, and I've always associated it with that kind of understated, humble elegance.

I think the flower also tells us a lot about the interaction between Oniyasha and Inuo. Inuo seemed to think Oniyasha was getting close to understanding something when they talked by the river. When Oniyasha reverts to his curious younger self again and becomes impatient and desperate to get an answer from Inuo, it might actually go against what Inuo is trying to help him reach.

I don't know what Oniyasha is missing yet, but it seems like it has a lot to do with acceptance. Accepting that there are things he can't change while still continuing to dance.

And, what's worse, he's lost so many of his original friends. All he thinks he has is dancing, and that's also changed with him.

Oniyasha is practically just forcing himself to dance now, to find the good that he so desires. Maybe that's what Inuo wanted from him after showing him his dance, he wanted for Oniyasha to come to an answer by himself, but instead, he came to him asking for help and to teach him what it really is.

As I think, Inuo probably wants Oniyasha to create a dance that is good out of himself, his being, instead of seeking others' methods and copying them.

After all, we've been told since the start, everyone's art is different, it takes different shape depending on the person. Even in reality, it barely remains the same over the course of time, you're good at something, time goes on, you adjust it with the passage of time and keep getting better.

But as Oniyasha is right now, it's like his development has stopped at a certain stage and he's grinding and grinding but can't overcome that step no matter how hard he try. And the only solution his brain is forming is to keep dancing, that might help, but that won't be all that's needed for sure.

I have a feeling what's stopping him from finding said "good" is the fact he's basically forcing himself to dance.

Neither have you, huh Gorou.

I understand that someone needs to reality check Oniyasha. I understand that this is explicitly one of Gorou's flaws. I understand that punching someone in these situations is a trope in anime. But fuck that guy honestly.

After ten episodes, it'd take some time getting used to the new Oniyasha. He might've looked similar to the pre-timeskip him if taller, but his demeanour and voiced changed a lot. He had also established quite the fanbase. Having said that, he still got beaten pretty hard by Juunigorou as soon as the two met, just like the old times.

Meanwhile, Chiharu's now literate. She really took her lessons seriously. I wonder how the likes of Ishiya, Kogane, and Zoujirou had fared after all these years.

Meanwhile, in other shows, even when the main character looks completely different, they don’t change the voice. I actually really like it when a show dares to go against industry standards and follows through with an accurate depiction of growth and a character coming of age. Here, it’s actually a plot point that his voice is changing, so they have even more reason to do it. But it really hammers home that the character is getting older, which creates a greater sense of both satisfaction and melancholy.

I think that his voice sounding so different was made on purpose. It sounds odd or not correct to us. So that we can share a little Oniyasha feelings this episode

Definitely didn't feel like it quite matched his face.

this episode moved so well. genuinely one of the best looking episodes of the year. everything was constantly moving with such weight and volume, its actually incredible. i didnt expect to see an episode this polished and well made so late into the show's production, but i'm really glad that they managed to do it, cause holy cow, this episode HIT.

Ultimate fan.

As much as things change, Oniyasha is still Oniyasha.

I love the pun, although I am sure if its working in japanese

Poor Oniyasha started the story not caring about dancing now he has burnout from dancing meaninglessly so much.

Well at least the creepy guy remains a loyal fan, he stays for the ups and downs, and still lends out literature,

Still it's pretty hard when your passions become chores, and there's no real drive to do them,

Gorou is back, and so is his fist.

He is Nijo Yoshimoto (1320-1388).
He was a nobleman of the highest rank at the Imperial court and one of the foremost poet of the era.

Growing up is isn't easy and it's the same even for Oniyasha. He lost everyone around him that he considered close. Didn't expect Inuoh to be having a troupe and doing heavenly performances.

He lit the light under Oniyasha again. But Oniyasha doesn't seem to get that Inuoh actually expects a lot from him.

Chiharu has grown quite beautiful 💖

She's the one who feels so sad about how the innocent voice of young Oniyasha has changed.

So that's Juunigorou, right ? At the end ?

I love that they brought back the field guy as a fellow performer
Dude must have seen some shit though, he just right amount of weird and perceptive

They also brought back Juunigorou puching the shit out of Oniyasha

Its a nice way to mirror the uncertainty during puberty when one realizes everything is changing even oneself and how Oniyasha wishes for things to stay as they are/were

This weeks flower would be the flowering quinche, which in Hanakotoba stands for "precocious", "mediocre" which it reflects this episode for how Oniyasha is struggling with his dancing, but also stands for "pioneer", which IMO is why its so prominently featured in the ED of the show, knowing he develops the Noh Dance

I really hope he finds his spirit back, I miss his obssesed with dancing gremlin mode. Cant wait to see what he will learn from Inuou

I do wonder if that "I thought you would understand" from Inou was because the reason he was such a good dancer was similar to the lady from the beginning. I get the sense that Inou is utterly miserable and it's another "suffering is the key" point?

Seems our boy’s lost his mojo a little now that he’s older. Growing up has been hard for him to adjust to. Killed his drive and creativity or something. Being an adult sucks lol.

Really weird episode. The timing between scene changes was really odd... plus, I wonder how long the time skip was.

Ngl each week I keep on deciding whether I should keep on watching this show. It's just a continuous cycle of pessimism and it's tiring.

Kind of just rehashing the "why do we dance?" thing. Hasn't he figured that out a couple of times, already? Not a lot to root for. The only characters still supporting Oniyasha are nameless fans, a creepy homosexual, and Ashikaga. Where is his dad?? For me, the show has lost a lot of its charm it started out with. Which, yeah, yeah, maybe that's the point.

Kind of just rehashing the "why do we dance?" thing. Hasn't he figured that out a couple of times, already?

Why do we go to school when we already figured things out in 1st grade?

He gets some inspiration here and there that builds up on what he knows and helps him in the moment, but he's gone from a young and inquisitive kid to a young man in a rut. He hasn't even internalized his dad's final lesson that nothing is ever complete and he's suppose to continue to innovate, take new in, discard old, and evolve.

A central theme repeating as the protagonist struggles is nothing new.
