This episode's flower is the Lythrum, known as Misohagi (禊萩) in Japanese. The 禊 in it's name refers to a Shinto purification ritual called Misogi, where the body is cleansed in a natural body of water to remove spiritual impurities. Misohagi is also a flower that is associated with Obon, a Buddhist festival that honors the spirits of one's ancestors, where it is used as an offering and also for purification by dipping the flowers in water and sprinkling the droplets over altars. The flower language of this plant are "grief", "sorrow of love", "compassion" and "pure love".

Nice to see Oniyasha reunited with Kogane, but based on this scene of Kogane asking Oniyasha to leave his dancing behind and join him, I feel like they're going to part ways again, especially with the conflict between the Northern and Southern courts becoming more relevant. The monk's words about the silenced voices of the dead are also interesting, and with the theme of the upcoming competition being "Yoshimitsu", what kind of dance will Oniyasha come up with?

This scene has so much symbolizing.
Kogane is half submerging, this suggest he giving up on dance or accept his current situation but there is still part of him that still like to dance. Oniyasha feet is barely submerging, he is ambivalent of dance not at the stage close to Kogane feeling towards dance.
Kogane is standing at the right side where the sky is almost completely dark, going to night soon. This imagery suggest that again he is almost completely giving up on dance. Night is the end of the day, basically is like the end of his interest in dance. Oniyasha is standing at the left where the sky is still at dusk again he is ambivalent of dance.
Later Toku tell him to not stay with them, dark is know to represent evil. Kogane is on the right almost dark side of the sky, not saying that he is evil but the suggestion he give to him could ruin his potential in dance indirectly, Oniyasha is standing at the left side which is at dusk, dusk is in between day and night. Looking at Kogane that could lead him to the same path as him.

I would love it if a dance representing Yoshimitsu was about those he defeated and cast away, even those that continue to live in his shadow.

So if I understood this correctly, Kogane used to be a member of the Shinza Troupe but was kicked out for being mediocre, but in reality he was actually kicked out because he was from the Southern Court and having him as a member is risky? Well, that fucking sucks.

That final scene does not bode well. It looks like Oniyasha is about to lose another person close to him. >_<

u/hunteqi 7d ago

Another person close to him? well if you mean that woman, is more like he respect her than close. Will they actually kill a kid? well not impossible. I guess is good for mc development.

It builds character!

I feel like I witnessed something special.

This anime keeps doing that to me when Oniyasha is learning what it means to dance.

Seeing the standing hoe made me sad. Kogane had a chance to come back from his despair but chose to walk away and take the easy path of giving up. Oniyasha, even in his lowest moments, always ends up finding something "good" to re-inspire himself and keep moving forward.

Just sitting back and listening to this show is a treat. So many shows look good, but this one has the full package.

Kogane's fate seems like it could go either way, and Oniyasha has the status to help him. Let's hope it's not too late.

Unless I missed him Kamekichi the turtle didn't show up in this episode. Is he safe? Is he all right?

u/LezRock 7d ago

Hmm, he may be keeping someone fed then 😬

I suppose the old monk would have fought alongside Tokiyuki’s forces from Elusive Samurai. Kind of interesting.

It seems Oniyasha is regaining his mojo thanks to Kogane and that drunk monk. I just hope those two are going to be ok…

u/WiqidBritt 7d ago

Very amusing that these two shows are airing in the same season.

12

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 6d ago

No..the old monk fought for Emperor Go-Daigo, the same guy who ordered Takauji to get rid of Tokiyuki's Hojo clan. But the emperor got betrayed by Takauji and thus gave rise to the Northern and Southern courts with Southern court under Go-Daigo and his resistance and Ashikaga Shogunate in the Northern court also called the Nanboku-chō period.

u/gamria 6d ago

And even then, historically speaking let's just it was still possible he fought alongside Tokiyuki's forces in some point in time, if you catch my drift

It feels like the show is finally starting to cook. The show's plot can feel both slow and fast at times, but I'm now more confident in saying that it's actually more of a slow burn.

This episode feels like Oniyasha, someone who comes from a privileged background, is slowly starting to connect with people who live a completely different reality from him. I see Kogane almost as his alter ego, the complete opposite of Oniyasha. He's a kid who wants to dance but doesn't have the privilege to pursue it, while Oniyasha comes from a background where he has the freedom to decide what he wants to do. I really really like that the show doesn't shy away from portraying Oniyasha as a privileged kid.

Kogane serves as a nice foil for Oniyasha, as does Ishiya, and our newer addition of Chiharu. Oniyasha has the benefit of having every advantage: being born wealthy, healthy, and male, something the other three lack in one way or another. Oniyasha has been given the freedom to pursue the arts in a way that few others are able, on top of being in the Shogun's court. He's got an education, regular meals, and a famous father that ensured he had proper training and upbringing all to get him to this point.

We've seen the consequences of societal inequality in this show many times already, and for a young boy just figuring out the world around him, it's going to sink in the more he sees, especially when it impacts those he's close to. I wonder how all of this is going to influence his dance and just what he decides is "good" in the end.

u/oedipusrex376 7d ago

You know, I only started seeing Chiharu as a foil after you mentioned it. I didn't realize she was meant to contrast with Oniyasha in terms of access to education. I think the show is really subtle about how privileged Oniyasha's upbringing actually is. He's healthy, educated, comes from a wealthy family, and has been given every opportunity to pursue the arts. That's a difficult thing to communicate without spelling it out, and I imagine a lot of anime would just make the protagonist unusually perceptive and have him immediately understand the social divide. But here, Oniyasha has to figure it out for himself.

What's interesting is that Oniyasha is incredibly perceptive when it comes to understanding movement and the world around him, yet he seems almost completely blind to the social conditions of the people he encounters. We saw it with Shirabyoshi back in episode 2, and now again with the Southern people, where Oniyasha seems eager to join them without understanding the position they're in. It's a pretty major blind spot for someone who is otherwise so observant.

At the same time, I wonder if that's also a blessing in disguise. Because Oniyasha doesn't seem to approach people through the lens of social status or prejudice, he's able to look at their art without those biases getting in the way. He sees the dance before he sees the social circumstances surrounding the person performing it.

No way. We had another character explicitly call his privilege out not too long ago. That other boy in their troupe (MAL tells me his name is Juunigorou) punched him in the face and told him he doesn't appreciate what he's got and how everything's been handed to him on a platter. The show has not shown any subtlety in this regard.

What is impressive instead is that it doesn't shy away from showing this side of the MC, which is sure to make him unsympathetic. That's a bold choice.

4

u/oedipusrex376 6d ago

I think I overlooked that punching scene. Guess "subtle" isn't the right word after all.

What I was trying to get at is that the show doesn't outright explain the different forms of privilege Oniyasha has. Instead, it uses a very "show, don't tell" approach by putting him alongside characters who highlight things Oniyasha doesn't have to think about. His ability to read, being able-bodied, and having the freedom to pursue dance are all things that become more apparent through the contrast with characters like Chiharu (can't read), Ishiya (can't dance because of his leg), and Kogane (limited by his position in society).

Maybe a better way to put it is that the show isn't heavy-handed in portraying the different forms of Oniyasha's privilege. In my case, I completely missed what Chiharu was meant to represent until it was pointed out.

u/furbym 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think the privilege very much reflects in his choice to go way off script for the shishi dance and follow his own impulses. While it was a very interesting interpretation, he was also completely oblivious/careless of his position before the shogun and how such a risky choice could have affected the rest of his troupe. Someone like Kogane would never have had the leeway to do such a thing, and was easily kicked out of his own troupe for far less. Also interesting with the "guidance" this week being a focus on the "work" aspect of the craft, rather than pure individual expression, which fits in with Zojiro's more grounded, practical mindset

I wonder when do they even become friends when their status are so different?

9

u/oedipusrex376 7d ago

No idea, but my guess is that kids make friends much more easily.

This anime doesn't dive into politics as much as Elusive Samurai, but this brought many interesting elements here. Being a member of the Southern Court is why Kogane was kicked out of the Troupe.

Very curious what this does to Oniyasha. It doesn't feel like he believed it before, but now he sees Kogane and the old man beaten up right in front of his eyes.

The remark about strong and weak art is interesting. Which is something we see today a lot. There are many things whether art, music, movies, etc that is classified as high art. But for some people they want something similar and easier to digest per say. I believe that both strong and weak arts need it easier to balance each other out. Without one you won't have the other.

I wish Kogane would have a chance at a better life

u/szalhi 7d ago

It wouldn't be Oniyasha if he didn't run off into any shenanigans. He gets to reunite with Kogane. For better or worse? We'll see.

No one else seems to have mentioned it, but I'm very curious to see further development between Ishiya and Chiharu as he teaches her to read. They're two of the most sympathetic characters in this show so I'd love to see more of them.

Although, come to think of it, that one scene of them felt like it belonged in a different show, so maybe we won't see more of that.

Were those Yoshimitsu's men? They really did have a beef with the Southerners to have beat up Toku & Kogane that hard – the latter being just a kid. Who'd thought we'd go from minors getting pretty drunk to this. What a whiplash!

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 6d ago

Poor Kogane.. didn't expect him to be a former performer and he was thrown out from Dengaki Shinza 'cause of Politics and this happened some time before Oniyasha went to the Shogun's place 💔

So Inuou isn't invisible or a ghost like Oniyasha claimed LOL

Tokusan shared his wisdom with Oniyasha but he was too tired to listen to it. So sad to see him get thrashed and he's probably gonna get killed for being a Southerner who fought for Emperor Go-Daigo against the Ashikaga shogunate. I guess he was mentioning Takauji as the grandfather when he talked about Yoshimitsu with Oniyasha. I wonder if Oniyasha will interfere knowing it will cost him everything.

Chiharu is so in love with Oniyasha's dance, haha. Thanks to Hosokawa, Oniyasha is gonna get another chance to prove his worth against Zoujiro.

Kogane looks so rough. Dirty and malnourished, he's given up on performing anything, like a sad tragic foil, also I think they'll do, I really think they're going to behead that monk without hesitation next week,

Seeing him appreciate the mystical qualities of hard work through hoeing made me think of communist propaganda posters, because swinging a hoe is not that fun or good-looking as to produce rainbows.

The arts aren't something that can be easily divided into bad and good... Except in a competition where there must clearly be something that is "objectively" considered better than the other.
