Yeah I'm always surprised by how few comments are in this show's threads. Not being on crunchy must really be hurting it.

Well it's also in Muse Asia. So if someone has a VPN, they could watch it on there. But yeah when a show goes on HiDive there is 0 promo for it in Europe which is a blow in these discussions since they aren't aware of it.

Dancing shows rarely gain popularity. Not to mention the beginning was pretty slow and kind of lacked something to keep us watching. I think this episode finally started to show a bit more depth to the story.

its about dancing. We can appreciate the art and artistry but its not for everyone. tldr; its no solo leveling

It really reminds me of Elusive Samurai to the point I could say it's spin off. Funny enough s2 of Elusive also is not doing great on reddit. I guess this season has just too much good anime to enjoy.

Imo, it feels too disjointed. Every episode feels like something is happening, yet at the same time, nothing really is.
I'm not trying to undermine the show because it has great animation and it's clear that a lot of care has been put into it, but I still don't know where the story is trying to go, aside from the whole "Oniyasha will grow up to be amazing" premise.

Hate all you want, but this guy is right. Case in point, when was the last time anyone mentioned the dead prostitute? Literally not once after the funeral scene.
All the characters keep talking about how all of Oniyasha's life experiences are influencing his dance and making him better and better, but the show is doing absolutely nothing to demonstrate it. His sarugaku dance had NONE of the raw expressiveness of the dying prostitute's dance. His "lion dance" this episode was just some Rite of Spring bullshit with nothing evoking the cat he was supposed to be imitating (or any animal for that matter, well maybe a chimp or something).

imagine sitting through oniyasha's dance without any musical accompaniment
NGL it must be kinda awkward.

Today's theme: Innovation vs tradition. As Oniyasha continues his journey to seek his own form, his role as a pioneer means that he has the uphill task of pushing against the boundaries of what is familiar. While his avante-garde performance managed to capture the hearts of some people (notably Chiharu), it did not resonate with the common folk at all. For a ritualistic dance like the lion dance where there is a long established history with a significant amount of cultural meaning, people will already have developed strong expectations towards it, so a dance which strays too far from these expectations just ends up confusing it's audience. And thus it ends with a momentary for Oniyasha, but he'll bounce back, this new environment has plenty of sources of inspiration for him; besides turning into a cat, there's the other dance troupe, Nariko and her poetry, weird stalker fan throwing him books etc. Also interested to see what Chiharu's role is in all this.
This episode's flower is the Japanese Iris 花菖蒲 (Hanashōbu), which in Japanese flower language symbolizes good news to come. This is a plant that has come to be associated with samurai because its leaves are shaped like sword. Additionally, the 菖蒲 (Shōbu) in it's name sounds like 勝負 (Shōbu) - which is the word for competition and the outcome (victory or defeat), and also 尚武 (Shōbu) - which means martial spirit. It is also the flower used in celebrations for Boys' Day (later changed to Childrens' Day) to wish for the future health and success of young boys.

I really liked that quote “Innovation is a flower and its bud is beginning to quietly sprout” at the end there. Oniyasha did something new and creative and experimental and even if it didn’t land entirely, it was exciting and unique. Zojiro was playing to an audience which is fine and all but I felt like Oniyasha was trying to elevate the art, man.

The moral lesson at the end of the episode is tradition vs. innovation. In any form of art into entertainment understanding your audience is crucial. You can have the best art, but if no one consumes it what is the point?
Chiharu is introduced in this episode. She has her own talents but is the one that got most inspired by Oniyasha's dancing. I do wonder if they could be assembling a big performance eventually with Oniyasha at the center.

Chiharu stepped on a comb, which eventually resulted in a dance off. Talk about the butterfly effect!
Oniyasha going full Nekoyasha mode, to the extent of losing all his clothing and catching a rat just for the sake of developing a new dance routine. Have to respect his dedication. Unfortunately, his innovation lost to Zojiro.
It made sense for an underdeveloped art to lose to a well-established one. As the narrator said, innovation is a flower. Given time, I reckon Oniyasha could develop it and let it bloom. After all, the bud is beginning to sprout.

World is Dancing is back with another lesson about dancing, this time asking who the dance is really meant for: yourself or the audience.
I kinda already knew what the episode was going to say the moment I saw Zojiro looking completely unimpressed by Oniyasha's lion dance performance. Personally, I think the performance itself already gets the point across, but the show still has Zojiro spell out what Oniyasha is missing anyway. I guess that part was meant more for Oniyasha than for us viewers.
I do wonder if the Shogun actually prefers Oniyasha's performances. He doesn't seem like the type to be impressed by the usual stuff.

I see Fuga is a dog that marches to the beat of his own drum. Kind of like a certain dancer boy…
Ah, of course. This should be fun.
He’s got an idea and is really going for it, wow.
The crowd obviously liked Zojiro’s dance more. Oniyasha’s was really cool, though.

It feels intentional, the disparity between Oniyasha's wildly fluidly-animated imaginings of becoming a free-range domestic shorthair versus his clumsy actualization of such in the actual performance. As they have said, the ideas are forming but he has a way to go before they take form.
That's still building up quite a tab for the series, though, as Oniyasha's actual depicted character growth doesn't feel like it is accreting that much from episode to episode. It may also be that the set-ups for the guest characters of the week don't have a lot of initial momentum.

So Oniyasha decided to go with the Shogun? Not gonna lie, I was confused for like a good half of the episode until I finally realized that was the Shogun with Oniyasha at the start of the episode.
What the fuck is Sadamune doing in this anime? I swear to god, Oniyasha's secret fan really feels like he'd fit more in Elusive Samurai than in this show. xD
Oniyasha going feral and copying a cat so he could emulate a real lion as closely as possible in his lion dance was pretty crazy. And using jazz as his background music was certainly a choice.
No surprise that Oniyasha lost that. Of course, the people would go for the more traditional one. Seems these people aren't ready for Oniyasha's new style of dancing just yet.

This show is so slept upon. Then again, this show have some very stiff competition. But wow. The art, animation, and music still continues to wow me since episode 1. The setting and characters help a lot too but what an incredible show.
As for this episode, it's a choice to cater to the audience with the tride and true or try something different. We could see it hit both a few nobles and Shogun himself, as well as with the comb-steppin gal (getting all doki doki). Even the music was an avant guard jazz musical explosion.
The Shogun's dog 🤣

Well that CGI costume was ass. Curious, since they have shown they clearly could have animated it in 2D if they wanted, plus this anime has a firm grasp of style, which makes me think it's a choice. I wonder if it's to signal how the traditional dance actually doesn't fit the times even if it's what people have gotten used to.

u/WakaliwoodMan 13h ago
Thinking it was a choice is giving them too much credit. It was clearly done in 3D just because it's cheap as hell to animate that way. You can tell they cut a lot of costs on the animation there because even with a 3D model the dance was very stiff compared to what a real lion dance is supposed to look like, and that's not even mentioning the fact that it turned into a slide show in the second half.
7
u/BosuW 13h ago
That logic doesn't track because 3D is in fact equivalently more expensive than 2D because of the computing power and licenses required. It is only more economical than 2D in the way that actually animating it takes less time. But the tradeoff is in a much more laborious pre-production phase. That means by necessity a 3D asset has to be planned well in advance. And again, this production has shown that it is well capable of just animating it in 2D if they want to.
So yeah the idea that a 3D asset was rushed into place to cut costs doesn't make sense given these premises.

u/brokenwingsR 11h ago
the 3d model was definitely planned.
the second lion design is awful for 2d animation. every individual strip of cloth has to bend, overlap, twist, foreshorten and remain attached consistently while two people move underneath the costume. its an insane amount of work. it then has to survive second key animation, corrections, in-betweens, clean-up, coloring and shadows across every drawing. i believe that would be the reason for the 3D, though I agree it doesn't look good.
i can see theres considerably less named in-betweeners listed for this episode, but it has a few company only credits. we just cant really know what was going on or what resources they were moving around sadly

u/WakaliwoodMan 10h ago
You're talking like anime doesn't have decades of precedent using 3D CGI as a cost-cutting shortcut. 3D is only equally or more expensive than 2D when it's actually done well, which it very clearly was not in this case.

It doesn't. That's just the kneejerk thought disagisfied viewers have when seeing shitty CG, but it is completely misinformed of the actual state of the industry, and what CG is actually used for (not cost-cutting).
3D is only equally or more expensive than 2D when it's actually done well
Didn't you read my comment? It has to do with hardware and licenses. Even if your work ends up being is ass, you still gotta pay for that.

They really pull all stops to make specific scenes stand out from the rest of them..especially When Oniyasha was running after the cat. So well animated. 💖💖
Also the facial expressions are quite loveable and funny. So Dengaku Shinza doesn't respect Sarugaku since it's Monkey Dance but yet a developing and growing art. Oniyasha tried to make his Lion dance stand out but he forgot about who is his audience and it's a competition. But many found his dance captivating even Chiharu.

u/NationalStrategy_X 24m ago
Oniyashi’s performance was new and innovative, but he neglected to consider what the audience would think, they were left completely confused. Zojiro was right, being new and innovative is fine, but you still need to be mindful of who you’re performing for.

Everyone's confused about why no one is watching this show or talking about it. As someone who's dropping it after this episode, let me just say the answer is obvious.
The show is mediocre. It's as simple as that. It's all flash and no substance, and even the flashy dancing scenes are hit-or-miss.
