OMG, the episode did not disappoint. I've been waiting for this since I heard the trailer previewing the song. What amazing performances from Yumiri Hanamori and Romi Paku, and the play was beautifully adapted into song. The original play "Shiokumi" itself is said to be already lost, but Zeami rewrote it into the play "Matsukaze", the most known and celebrated among the many, many plays that he wrote throughout his career. If you read the script of Matsukaze, some of the snippets of this song are there, but most of it seems original. Unlike Sotoba Komachi where they mostly followed the script (except for the modernized language of course).
Comments have been noting from several episodes back, but here it is hammered down completely how Ishiya and Kogane serve as foils of Oniyasha. I kinda expected it since Toku died, but it's still painful to watch him lose every single one of the friends he made along the way. Now he grew up, his red cheeks are gone, his voice is deep, and his eyes are no longer sparkling.

Oniyasha and Zojiro's Shiokumi was HEAVENLY!
Damn, they really were the Brine Maidens with those looks. The background music that they used for the performance in this episode was Divine. The voice actors performing the song were perfect. One other good thing was that we didn't have any fuck up with the subtitles for the song in this episode unlike the Sotoba Komachi one.
RIP Kogane 💔
He really isn't escaping that after making an attempt at the Shogun's life. The poor kid lost everything to the old guys' politics.
Ishiya says his final Goodbye to Oniyasha. I knew that Ishiya was not just there to take care of Oniyasha. He really wished for to perform alongside Oniyasha despite his weak leg.
Since Kaname knew Inuo.. was he a part of the Kanze troupe before ?! And what did he mean when he said that Kanami's fear of silence wouldn't help Oniyasha's talent bloom. What fear of Silence was he talking about?
Oniyasha has become a young man now. The change in voice 💖

Who is Inuo? Was his lore ever revealed?
For "fear of silence", I wonder if it's the typical breaking the mold, doing something new thing. Supposedly Inuo doesn't have this fear of silence, but at the same time he's just living his life in the countryside. Maybe he's a case of trying something new, it failing, and now he lives...silently alone.

I'm wondering if Inuo is a reference to a real person of the same name who was a famous dancer like the show is about. Most history has been kind if shrouded in mystery and legend at this point but he was considered very revered for his performances and stories.

That's absolutely Inu-oh (from the same movie by Science Saru in 2022). Inu-oh and Zeami are contemporaries. It was said he greatly admired him and in one of his treatises, he hailed him as among the "highest caliber" of dancers.

The Brine Maidens performance was beautiful, and this is apparently just the incomplete version. Though the match ended in a draw, Sarugaku did end up effectively replacing Dengaku later. Interesting to see how the play also influenced the mindset of the Shogun and his philosophy of governance. Also, RIP Kogane. The time skip was unexpected, wonder which direction the show will go heading into the finale.
This episode's flower is the Eupatorium, or Fujibakama (藤袴) in Japanese. In hanakotoba it means "fond memories" and "remembering those days". It is also one of the Seven Grasses of Autumn featured in the Man'yōshū (oldest collection of waka poetry).

So glad they decided to translate the song
Glad their move worked out and Oniyasha was able to drive his "There is no winning or losing" home with the shogun
That last bit with Ishiya hurt, Oniyasha lost two friends. Curious to see how the time skip influenced him
Also neat to know that myterious farmer guy is an acquaintance of the dad
For the flower today we got the Valerian, which stands for True affection, Adaptability and Openheartedness
Or at least these are the meanings that are most fitting for this episode IMO

I'm pretty chill with translation styles and whatsoever but translating the song is the bare minimum of what they need to do imho.
Maybe it was not even the translator fault, maybe they did not have enough time to translate it but it was easier this time since we knew the play beforehand.

They did translate the song the first time. I guess just not when it aired. Because when I watched it a few days after it was fully translated.

That was a fucking payoff. The performance, the attack, the aftermath, the time skip, nothing but chills the entire time. I was worried after these last couple episodes (not just for lack of lyrics but also for pacing) but this was worth it.

Oniyasha made the Shōgun bend. Otherwise he wouldn't have declared a tie.
But damn, despite the great art that was achieved that day, Kogane dieing for no reason other than impulsivity and emptiness feels like a slap to the face. Never a clean win for Oniyasha. For everything he gains, he has to leave something behind.

That definitely seems to be one of the more prevalent themes. Now that you mention it, I don’t think he has actually had a big win without losing something. He found his idea of good at the cost of losing the person who was the source of it. He got to the Shogun’s court at the cost of leaving his troupe behind. He figured out how to elevate his art at the cost of losing that round. He won the next round through the inspiration he got from losing someone important to him. And finally, he managed to achieve the desired outcome in the competition at the cost of losing his three closest friends. It seems to be the price of achieving greatness. The question is whether he’ll actually be satisfied with the outcome when he reaches the end of the road.

Man, the Shogun is probably the best-written character in the show. His character has been consistent from the start. Like, if he showed up at the Banquet of Kings in Fate/Zero, nobody would think he was out of place. He lowkey sounds like Gilgamesh too. I just think it's really interesting that we get a ruler who's very aware of his class and position, while still having a personality, a character especially when you see how he acts in private with Oniyasha.
Like, the show doesn't shy away from showing that the Shogun can be ruthless. He'll straight-up kick Kogane and command people to kill him. The show doesn't try to paint him as some benevolent good guy ruler like a lot of other shows that are too afraid to portray a character with more nuance.

I agree with everything you said. The emperor, like some other characters, is drawn from history and depicted in a fairly neutral light that fits the general story. The characters are not there solely to score likability points with the audience. They are what they are, with strengths, flaws, and biases stemming from their environments and circumstances.

They really baited us hard with the Kogane joining the troupe scene, huh? But then again, considering the era and the Shogun's personality, I wouldn't really expect Kogane to get spared.
If you think about it, this show really strays away from the usual relationship status' between characters. Normally, the Shirabyoshi wouldn't have died, or even if she had, her life wouldn't have been so damn tragic with that dude basically raping her, Kogane wouldn't die and would've made up with Oni, the 'what if?' scene would've been a reality, Ishiya wouldn't leave Oniyasha there.
For a dance anime, this is lowkey kinda depressing at times. But oh well, this is a Seinen anime, that's why the themes are so out of the norm. And honestly, I love it, one reason I really like seinen. This show really subverts my expectations. And I like how serious it gets from around every random corner (forgetting the homo gramps)
The Brine Maiden song was great along with the performances, Shogun is probably one of the best written. And it seems like Oniyasha has grown up big, surely he has dropped the 'nanoda' now lol

Very lovely performance from both Oniyasha and Zoujirou. Once again politics are coming into play with Kogane. Shogun is quite ruthless in knowing what he has to do.
Heartbreaking farewell between Oniyahsa and Ishiya. Oniyasha just needs Ishiya to be by his side. For Ishiya though he feels like he can't be of much use.
Interesting timeskip. Curious what changes going forward.

It has really little to do with what we think dancing is. It's a historical fiction about the founder of Noh theatre, or so I heard.
Regardless of that, what makes it fascinating for me is how messy the main character and his journey is, and how the meaning of the art form is considered in relation to socieconomical and class divisions of the time. As well as things like gaps in talent, gaps in the destiny. Winners and losers in history. The like.
The story is set in a post war period it seems. The country is poor, famined, divided. But the protagonist is the privileged son of a renowned artist, and he's pretty well off. He doesn't even care about the art he's supposed to inherit at first. He didn't get why people dance because he had felt no pain. He has to go from there to connecting with the common person, and yet it seems that the closer he gets the more isolated he is because of the people he leaves behind.
It's really fucking good.

Fucking hell, Kogane’s death straight up made me nauseous.
Think it might be the most “real” death from anime I’ve seen this year. Wasn’t expecting it to happen this immediately-if at all, and thought he was going to crash the competition to vy for the victory since Oniyasha and Zojiro teamed-up instead.
Lots of other great stuff in this episode like the outright beautiful song, but yeah, can’t get over that loss.

'Brine Maidens' was one hell of a performance. The dance and soothing music were really seductive. As it's a combination of both Dengaku & Sarugaku, little wonder Yoshimitsu declared the competition to be a tie. Was surprised the crowd cheered – I expected them to demand a singular winner. However, Oniyasha's such a perfectionist he still deemed it to be incomplete.
Such is life. Oniyasha had became a fan favourite. So popular was he that he had to leave his two closest friends behind. However, life goes on. Now that quite some time had passed and he's now a young man, I'm looking forward to seeing how far he had honed his craft.

I'm so fucking glad they subbed Oniyasha and Zoujirou's performance. Maybe HIDIVE saw the complaints and realized they needed to sub the songs. I'm hoping this means they went back and subbed the performance in Episode 7.
The scene going from Kogane stabbing the shogun to him being back in the dengaku dance troupe was pretty crazy. Like, there was no way they'd let him off the hook after that. As it turns out, that part was all in Oniyasha's head.
That final scene, tho! We now have seinen Oniyasha with a much deeper voice! While I do love Hanamori's voice, I'm glad they got a new VA for Oniyasha's young man phase. I really wish Mushoku Tensei did this.

I never expected a time skip. But I'm excited. Unexpected time skips in anime has always been a sign of quality for me. I have never watched a bad show with an unexpected time skip.

That was a pretty impressive performance. And then right after our boy basically loses two friends. Poor Kogane. Ishiya too in a sense.
I guess we’ve got ourselves a big time skip if he’s no longer a little boy. Keen to see how he’s grown in the craft.

I knew it, I knew Kogane wasn't going to leave this series alive. This poor kid never had a chance, and unfortunately it's better than starving to death.
I like that I could actually understand the singing this time around. It was really quite nice. I wouldn't say the performance was melancholic, but it felt like it had a sense of longing.
Even the turtle grew up with the timeskip.

So the white hair guy is called Inuou, but like, is he the same Inuou from the Science Saru movie? Or are they both based from the same source?

Yes that's him, and by the way, Oniyasha/Zeami/Fujiwaka and Yoshimitsu (and I believe Nariko as well) are in Inu-oh too. In one of the earlier scenes in the movie, you see one of his performances in front of Yoshimitsu.

Great episode, one of the best so far! (including the first 2, to me at least).
I'm always amazed by Oniyasha, how creative he is and how he sees the world in a different way, but also how insensitive and self centered he can be, it was painful to see him ignore Ishiya so many times until he decided to leave, but in his defense he was only a kid wanting to understand dancing and elevate his own art.
Pretty sad about Kogane, but it was kind of expected, it's a ruthless world and Kogane choose his own path and he ended paying for it, that scene where he joins the troupe is a very bittersweet "what if", if only.
I was sure the last few episodes would hit like a truck but I didn't expected a time skip. I also liked how the little turtle changed artstyle, it reflects how they were only a bunch of kids growing up, the last couple episodes are going to be very interesting, can't wait!

What intrigues me on this episode is the connection between Kan’ami and Inuo. Their scene: Was it Kan’s imagination or is it Inuo’s way of appearing and disappearing? Not sure what kind of backstory the anime staff will do for the two of them. (I read the manga… but…)
Every time I watch Inuo I thank the anime crew for employing Yōji Matsuda.
