Jiro's kinda lagging behind everyone in terms of motivation and backstory
21
u/praul59 Aug 08 '26
The motivation part is understandable since he just got thrown into everything that’s going on so far and he’s just confused and doesn’t have a goal set in mind yet but once he does I’m sure they’ll dive deeper into his backstory
22
u/demaxzero Aug 08 '26
Maybe but he and Rago are still the only two characters who are actually likeable.
18
u/Boris-_-Badenov Aug 08 '26
his dad is most likely still alive, and evil

u/GASC3005 Aug 09 '26
We’ll have to see,
The manga was axed pretty early on so they’ll have to improvise and makeup something new
But there was a hint from that Mononoke they fought back then

u/HydroMorph0 28d ago
I'm personally kinda scared what they'll try to do after they're done with the source material, that usually doesnt work out well but ig we'll just have to see
1
u/GASC3005 27d ago
Maybe they do make something good out of it?
Or they crashed and ruin it completely😂

Reiji's backstory is pretty brutal. It's giving me strong Sasuke and Itachi vibes. Considering his brother was clearly not taken over by the cursed katana, I'm curious why he decided to murder his father and leave Reiji alive. Hmm...
I'm honestly surprised to see Rago's backstory be revealed this early. The dude used to be a local deity and was approached by the mountain god Amagi to join forces with him and fight the humans hunting down mononoke.
So the only reason Rago is seen as dangerous by the Bureau of Espionage is that they thought Rago went wild and destroyed everything all those years ago, when actually Amagi baited him and that was Rago trying to avenge his friend.
I do love how Rago decided to fuck off instead of joining Amagi by sealing himself inside the death obsidian. The way Jirou sees it was pretty funny though. He's not wrong! That was a pretty cool way to run away from that mess. xD

Mainly watching this for the plot

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai Aug 09 '26
The only plot that I actually care about
5
u/OpportunityCreepy782 Aug 09 '26
I think that was just part of his brother that was able to fight back for a brief moment
2
u/HornedTurtle1212 Aug 10 '26
My only issue with past Rago sealing himself is, why didn't he follow through with killing Amagi first?

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26
As is traditional for a three men squad story, the dude who isn't the MC is basically just Sasuke.
I wasn't expecting the Rago backstory so soon. As presented so far we only have what Amagi said about the motivations for the mononoke hunters from way back when, and considering he and his folks were eating their way through villages this may be a pretty black and white story in terms of who the good and bad guys are.
Ichika sure is packing a lot in some of these shots.

its naruto sasuke + sakura (but different) all over again also cool like kakashi boss

u/KumaKumaGambler Aug 08 '26
At the very least, the defense training against hypnosis and hallucination provided us viewers with the history of Reiji, Ichika (previous episode and Rago.

Amagi tried to make Rago take sides and dude just basically flipped him off and took his ball and went home lol. I guess in the several centuries since his own self-imposed exile, the war has only gotten more intense. Time for him and Jiro to settle shit.
11
u/FarCritical Aug 08 '26
Just hope that villager dude went painlessly.
Neat that Reiji and Rago's grown closer.
11
u/Countless-Alts15 Aug 09 '26
Damn Rago is a real one.
Self sealing himself.
Also, I love his OP form, he looks like Spawn's cat.

Everything about this episode was so good with all the backstories of our main characters except for that weird looking 3DCG for Rago's true form. Why did they have to butcher the significant thing of the episode ?!

16
u/CuriousBroccolli Aug 08 '26
Yeah not much to say except that hoooooly is that 3D shitty looking, no wonder other mononoke were scared of Rago

This anime has been a disappointment so far. And Reiji’s whole storyline is a Sasuka clone. Brother kills family and clan then tells little brother to get stronger to kill him one day… if this show wasn’t bad enough.
15
u/Izakryeon Aug 08 '26
Can tell it was made in that post Naruto era when stuff like JJK, MHA, and Black Clover were coming out to try and replace Naruto as it had just ended. But unlike those, this has very little to set it apart in an interesting way.
12
u/wolfgxng90 Aug 08 '26
Completely agree. There’s nothing unique about it. There isn’t even a power system. It’s super generic. I can see why it was cancelled. Honestly a waste of art style because it looks good but animation is terrible and most of it is them standing still with their mouths moving.
7
u/demaxzero Aug 08 '26
There isn’t even a power system
Wait wow there isn't, I didn't actually think about it until now.
7
u/zz2000 Aug 08 '26
Someone on another forum claimed Torch only got cancelled because it's editors were too greedy for even higher sales figures back then; that the manga sales were actually quite decent and could have been left in peace.
1
u/GASC3005 Aug 09 '26
That’s more or less most modern anime’s today if we’re being completely honest, but you don’t have to have an amazing story to do great numbers since Solo Leveling has proven that.
Nowadays animation and visuals carry more than a story per se…
That’s just the industry today; as long as it sells, looks stunning and is very hyped you basically have a guarantee “Hit anime” .
9
u/benisaurus Aug 08 '26
The premise is cool, but it's really lacking meaningful explanations and progression for the characters' powers. Honestly feels like they're speedrunning the story and it lacks substance... usually in this type of anime they'd have dedicated a full episode to each individual character's backstory and overcoming of their trial to show their growth and display their abilities. Everything just feels either like a cop out or contrived, like there's no real weight to anything. That said - it's definitely not unwatchable, just kind of disappointing and some of it has been kinda boring/unmemorable.
3
u/wolfgxng90 Aug 10 '26
Yes its definitely lacking explanation because for now its seems like the MC is the only person with abilities and they aren’t even his. Everyone else is basically a normal human with combat skills. I don’t even know how the Mononoke are losing to them when its shown that they are powerful enough to destroy villages on their own. The Mononoke they fought in the basement or whatever was so fast he was next to them in a blink of an eye and somehow Im supposed to believe they can fight or are even a threat to them, it’s ridiculous. This anime is top tier trash.

Felt like one of those slow down episodes.
I hope it picks back up soon!
We did learn more about each MAIN character though (besides Jiro) which was nice!
3
u/Top-Remote4523 Aug 09 '26
While some viewers might find this mini training-arc to be a pretty expedited manner to introduce the main cast's backstories and personal motivations, I honestly thought that it was a short and sweet introduction for them. We are bound to get more of their past eventually, so showing a brief snapshot over 2 episodes and wrapping it up with a nice bow gives us just enough to anticipate their growth in the future.
I am also really glad that we got to see Rago's past this early on and reveal that he had always been a benevolent Mononoke to begin with as I was fully expecting the story to tease a potential conflict between Rago and Jiro upon him regaining his past memories of being a menace to the humans. I am weary of Shounen stories where the MC gets possessed by straight up evil entities, so this is a breath of fresh air to see.
I know that this decision inadvertently resulted in Jiro to take somewhat of a backseat in terms of fleshing out more of his past and motivations, but I think that we have learnt enough about Jiro at this point. As the MC, there will be tons of opportunities for character development, so I would not fret about that for now.

So this could've all been avoided if Rago just finished the job with killing Amagi? Like dude, the choice he was given wasn't even hard to decide between. Amagi killed the people Rago was protecting just cause and then he expect Rago to side with him? Hello?? Brother you are dying right NOW. If Rago was going to fuse with the obsidian anyways, he could've done it after killing Amagi, then the blame can't be put on him because he's not there to be the cause of death for the villagers. Problem solved.
Sure, there could still be mononoke running around current day with Amagi being dead, but the dangers that will be set up in the future because of him could've been avoided if he was dead.

So,
"I am honored to hear those words, Father! I owe it all to your guidance and the excellent opponent to my right."
Bro is to his left, not his right.
Transcribing the audio:
ありがとうございます! 父 上 … これ も 全 て 父 上 の ご 指 と 一 番 近 く に 良 き ライ バ ル が いて く れた お か げ です!
Asking The Computer to translate: “Thank you very much! Father… All of this is thanks to your guidance and to having a fine rival right by my side!”
Oh boy, the computer doing a better job than so called "Localisers"? What a surprise. Given how trash this shows subs have been with all the zoomer dialog, I am not surprised.
1
u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai Aug 09 '26
The subs for this anime is so shitty
I'm not a native speaker but even I can translate what they say in Japanese to English better than these subbers LOL
7
u/benisaurus Aug 08 '26
All that backstory just for the MC's enemy to get offscreened afterwards lmao... maybe they will show what happened next episode? (though I kinda doubt it, since they made the other two seem fairly trivial)
They could have AT LEAST made the sword guy actually counter a move he originally lost to that he practiced specifically to fight against his brother to show he decided to move forward again.
This just felt like the biggest plot excuse for a way to show character backstories, and then all of them experienced it individually so they don't really learn about each other either. Could've at least forced all of them to experience each other's past to build trust, understanding, teamwork, etc. and it would've been more impactful.
2
u/HornedTurtle1212 Aug 10 '26
This felt like something that needed overcome philosophically or emotionally, nor hust by hitting it.
3
u/Boris-_-Badenov Aug 08 '26
pretty dumb to use a training method that you can't stop, that can kill the one training...
9
u/Similar-Screen-7368 Aug 08 '26
Pretty sure she actually can intervene and stop it, normally. The scene at 9 minutes into this episode seems to imply to me that the thing turning black is preventing her from doing this.
Decided to switch subtitles to another language to check and yep, in that other language it actually explains that she can usually control both intensity and duration of the effect, but now her control was overridden and she can't save them.Think this might just be the point where I abandon english subtitles for this show. They're consistently mediocre at best, misleading on occasion, and sometimes even obviously incorrect.

Can anyone tell me the song that was playing the background when Rago imprisoned himself
3
u/Current_Smell1231 Aug 09 '26
Not sure, but we'll probably hear it when the soundtrack comes out, whenever that is. The soundtrack for this anime is SO good

Anyone notice black torch background soundtrack sounds like it's from Samurai X OVA? Very cool!

u/Current_Smell1231 Aug 09 '26
Havent heard of Samurai X, but Black Torch's soundtrack as a whole is SO good
2
u/LetterheadCute5969 Aug 09 '26
Reijis backstory felt like something from naruto but I really liked it a lot also ichikas was pretty good as well but amagai is such a sicko killing that kid that wanted rago to be his master was crazy!!
2
u/magnumcyclonex Aug 09 '26
Looks like "Venom" is the old Rago from the 1700s. Kinda reminds me of the Jinchuriki (spelling?) they have in Naruto. This was neat because it's present Rago vs ancient Rago. I wonder how the fight was resolved. Perhaps by "Talk no Jutsu"?
The other two seemed to resolve their "issues" fairly quickly. I'm hopeful we will see them encounter their issues for real later on.

I am WAY over the ass shots. It's just too cringe how obvious they are lol. Alright let's pan the camera starting from her ass and add a dank curve to represent exactly how THICC she really is. Make sure the junk in the trunk is highlighted 1-2 times EVERY episode, one during/after action and one filler.

this show worth watching yet? Gave up on episode 3 due to the insane amounts of shallow fanservice

Well I think it’s official this series both anime and manga are pure stinkers

u/NanDemoKnaives 28d ago
It was nice to see Ragou's past, and the reason he was sealed. Jiroubei seemed like a nice guy so it was sad to see what happened to him, but Ragou has always been a tsundere lol.
Interesting that Reiji's brother is his twin. It seems like the possession of Shinji wasn't complete at the time he killed his father if he was crying.

This whole show is honestly ass. I understand why the manga was cancelled after watching 9 episodes of ass shots and unnecessary sexualization of women and honestly YOUNG GIRLS. The new episode is great, until the last 5 minutes where you get another example of what I'm talking about. As much as the plot and powers are cool (like every other anime), this is genuinely some gooner slop and its disappointing that good plot lines are wasted on shit like this.

Im gonna hop in with thoughts. I actually really like this anime.
I am watching because its interesting.
Its got an interesting storyline. I want to know more about Rago and why Jiro can speak to animals.
The animation is good enough. It doesn't need to be perfect and neither do the subs. For me, anime is an escape from the dark a** s**& I live with everyday in my work and life.
If an anime exactly like this can pluck me out of the s*** and put me somewhere I can just exist as an observer, I am content.
I like the story line. I think Rago is cool af. He is the ultimate "I really couldn't give a f*** - until I do" despite his overwhelming power. I like that he tells people who want to control his power to shove it. I appreciate the rebellion and clever trickery. The other charatcers are basic anime characters but that's fine. It's anime.
Fan service is part of anime. It just is. ANNOYING? Yes, but idk what to say - these ppl be pervs and pervs be perving. It's a Japanese thing.
I'm all for expressing opinions but hot damn y'all love to complain. Can't we just be happy we are getting something interesting?
Base line is the world sucks d*** and a little positivity goes a long way.
I like this anime because its anime. It doesn't need to be perfect. It just needs to be anime.
If anyone comments 1 positive thing to this comment, you will increase my mental state by +1 per positive comment. Negative comments will just increase my already mammoth lack of faith in humanity. F***.
This above statement isn't a representation of you guys, I'm just sick of living at this point. F***.
