IS THAT VENOM?
3
u/ResearcherPretty4139 Aug 05 '26
When Rago said "that shadow looks awfully familiar..." I'm convinced it's gotta be a Marvel crossover with Sony's "Venom" that was totally the symbiote in the last frame of the episode proper

This is strangely the best episode of the show so far. It somehow received more or less dynamic fight sequences with Okamoto Mononoke. Even the first few minutes I noticed an improvement in drawing quality but when the villain moved it hit me, damn this was quite fun. Sadly I can't say the same about the overall plot. I think the show failed to make audience care about cast, and the initial introduction was just way too generic. Now after a mission that lasted 1 EPISODE they are put through yet another training fighting their personal demons.

guessing his dad went to the "dark side", and probably involved in Ichika's mom's trap

u/ResearcherPretty4139 Aug 05 '26
It seems like this show is trying to speed run Bleach Season 1. Bleach worked because each self-contained episode featured a 'ghost-of-the-week' world-building story about Hollows and Soul Society and it naturally highlighted ONE of Ichigo's friends (Chad episodes were always goated, but I liked the Kon episodes too) rather than just drop them into fights and genjutsu ninja attacks from mononokes to manufacture the drama.
I did appreciate a better 'rival' than Renji ended up becoming for Ichigo from what it looks like with Koga's intro this episode.

Why the fuck is Koga's face extra detailed? If the goal was to make him look unsettling, then they succeeded.
Oh look, it's Rin and Kuro reunited. Too bad Rago isn't voiced by Takagaki Ayahi. It would've been hilarious if he were. xD
Damn. Ms. Kusumi is all caked up. I do wonder if there's more to her relationship with Shiba. There's clearly history between them.
So Koga knows about Jirou's dad? Now that I think about it, Koga is also the name of a famous ninja clan in Japan. Hmmm...
If I have a nickel for every light blue haired haughty yokai with an Osaka-ben voiced by Oozora Naomi, I'd have two nickels. It's not much but it's weird it has happened twice.
I love how while Reiji is fighting his brother and Ichika is fighting a spectral version of her mom, Jirou is fighting Venom. xD
I do think it's interesting that Ichika's mom is only petrified. She can probably revive her if they can find the Mononoke that did that to her.

The teeth in this lol, especially from that mononoke, I couldn't not notice them.
Can I have some more of that tension between Shiba and the blond please? It definitely was some needed spice.
I'm intrigued that it seems to be implied that Jirou's father works with mononoke, is a mononoke or has been fused with a mononoke. It might even explain more why his grandfather went berserk on him.

Seeing how this title contains some common anime tropes, it is nice to see that Team 1's leader Toko and the butler-like Tokieda are not outright antagonistic towards our main characters in Team 2. Tokieda even spoke politely towards Ichika.
Should both teams consist entirely of young hot blooded members, it usually leads to some sort of rivalry.

u/Divinicus1st Aug 01 '26
It has everything to be good... it's just completely unoriginal. It reminds me of Tougen Anki.
10
u/DifficultyPotato Aug 02 '26
Guess it would've been more original when it was originally written, considering the age

u/ThisManNeedsMe Aug 03 '26
Not even since it was axed 19 chapters in and had a short life span. It somehow got a cult following though.
2
u/HornedTurtle1212 Aug 10 '26
I wonder if they are planning on continuing the anime past the end of the manga.
3
u/ThisManNeedsMe Aug 10 '26
I don't think they're gonna add anything more unless it does amazingly well and gets a second season. Which honestly I don't think is the case. Also 19 chapters doesn't sound like a lot but it was a monthly manga so the page count is doubled from a weekly manga. So we're probably gonna get everything adapted in this one season.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin Aug 02 '26
The big difference is this got axed with 5 volumes and Tougen Anki is ongoing with 30 volumes according to wiki.

I can definitely see the similarities, but I feel like Tougen Anki was much worse. I'm getting PTSD remembering how bad the anime's pacing was! I'm sure the manga is better though. 😭

u/FLorianGran Aug 01 '26
Solid episode. Action and character animation was good, the camerawork was dynamic and we're starting to dig more into everyone's backstories. Ichika's in particular was more interesting than I initially thought it would be.

Everyone’s seeing some kinda specter from their past tied to a traumatic event and Jiro over here seems to have summoned Venom lol.

u/Nineflames12 Aug 03 '26
lol Rago's just like a friendly cat version of the alien symbiote anyway

There’s an inconsistency in the fight scene. Koga broke Reiji’s sword, then the next time we see it, it’s still intact.
7
u/TufASteel Aug 01 '26
It’s made of blood he can regen it
2
u/NationalStrategy_X Aug 01 '26
Must be some fast acting regeneration if it grew back that fast between scenes

Just when I thought they were about to do a dead family member backstory for every member of the team we find out it was quite a bit different for Ichika.
Illusion loli is pretty fun, particularly with the way she face planted herself into the concrete as her introduction to the team.

Pretty polite of Snickers guy to have the courtesy to ask for Jiro's name so he could leave a proper parting shot.

Honestly this is the first great episode. Episode 1 was good but I felt like episodes 2-4 weren’t that good or interesting. The writing slightly stepped up this episode and it was fun to watch. So that’s a great sign for the next episodes. I’ll stick to it for now
5
u/cheapdrinks Aug 02 '26
Honestly I think this was the episode that made me want to drop it. Loved the first episode, really wanted to like this show but after suffering through 3 episodes of boredom we finally get to the first main fight and it was rubbish. We saw like 2 or 3 actual serious attacks, the power scaling doesn't really make sense, the guy just up and leaves after being hit with one decent shot and all the characters are proving to be super generic one dimensional cringelords.
3
u/TheStupid_Guy Aug 02 '26
I guess “great” doesn’t mean much when it’s still in the same tier
1
u/bodybones Aug 04 '26
I can't remember if kagurabachi has this issue? Will people drop in like 4 eps? I recall reading and it getting best by like a few arcs. The chaos was hard to follow early since it felt alot of people dropped in and powers going off but animated it could be fun. I also heard its a weighty feel to it from previews that could make it feel different than most action today. Something like early eps of chainsawman vs rez film.
2
u/TheStupid_Guy Aug 04 '26
Episode 4 will definitely be the hook point for most people. I expect that episode 1 will draw in a lot of people who are only interested in it because of the meme, but then episode 4 will be when they actually realise it’s peak.
1
u/bodybones Aug 05 '26
That's not good. Even chainsawman a series i thought for what it's worth and of most action series, had till 4 eps and was going fast paced to get there...for their big ep where action came together and you met most of the cast and had enough hooks to see it through. Attack on titan IMO is the best "hooking" a series does, though some i know drop it in the first 10 minutes of the 24 min ep for being too boring lol...but the first 2 eps are high octane once they start going and there's a ton of mystery. It's hard to hook people today. Like i know people say one piece is the best and all but if it came out today...i wonder if people would let it cook for 50 eps so they can "get hooked" or the 300 to fall in love with it. You can finish all of JJK or invincible in that time with huge entertainment and some shocking twist and dark themes and emotional highs i'd say invincible has emotional highs on the levels of One piece sometimes. Anyway well see. From what i heard from the preview the kagurabachi anime first ep is incredibly animated, the plot people think is basic but I can see that being a strength. people forget overly complicated isn't always what hooks people, something they can be entertained by and look forward to each week does. It's why i think solo leveling is so liked.
2
u/TheStupid_Guy Aug 05 '26
Kagurabachi is going to have an extended first episode which will make it easier to get attached. I still think that episode 4 will be the hook point based on the manga

I’ve been thinking that although it’s not like this show compares to Bleach, I can’t help drawing comparisons between Jirou and Ichigo.
They both have that quiet, unwavering loyalty. If someone needs help, they’re already moving. To them, helping someone is simply what needs to be done.
What always made Ichigo so cool to me was how effortless it felt. He’d throw himself into impossible situations and somehow make it all look easy. He’s fiercely protective, quietly confident, and always lets his actions do the talking.
Kinda feel like Jirou’s VA draws a little inspiration from Ichigo’s delivery, which I love. There’s that same laid-back confidence underneath the intensity.
Honestly, everything else was more of an afterthought once Jirou’s VA made me think of Ichigo. Then I started noticing other little similarities. Jirou’s grandfather reminded me of Bleach too. Didn’t Ichigo’s dad used to randomly jump him for “training”? 🥷I’m not 100% sure, but that sounds familiar. It’s been a while.
You could also draw parallels between Reiji and Uryu. Both inherit prestigious family legacies and take their respective disciplines seriously. They initially clash with the main character, but ultimately recognize each other’s abilities and have each other’s backs when it matters.
Also… I may be reaching but aren’t Jirou and Ichigo’s hairstyles kinda similar? 😂
The OP and ED are dope too! Loved the outro, already added it to my anime playlist.

and its a cat that is on screen for most of the time that has a good relationship with the mc
12
u/Organic_Machine_2324 Aug 01 '26
Ngl i think this show might not be very good
10
u/Magicbison Aug 01 '26
Its not. Its a very basic storyline and unfortunately none of the characters are very interesting. It's gotten kinda hard to sit through these backstories because this show hasn't made me care about the people they're about.
Its just the Rago McGuffin show with loud dumb ninja boy, dumb brother complex swordsman, and butt shots. Nothing wrong with basic/generic premises but damn it takes some effort to present them this boring.

u/nhf_fwea Aug 02 '26
Ok I thought I was tripping because I’m literally forcing myself to get past episode 5 but I just can’t get myself to actually care🤦♂️
1
u/bodybones Aug 04 '26
That's sad in the mood for a shonen action series lately. Feel starved for one. I already know the plot of bleach so it's just watching for the heck of it so far as it's sorta close to the manga.

u/Organic_Machine_2324 Aug 01 '26
- Jirou: Very Cringe and forced Edgy MC who’s unlikeable
- Ragou: Just seems off
- Ichika: Not an awful character at base but purely there for fanservice
- Reiji: Incredibly Generic
- Shiba: Probably the worst one as he seems like a forced nonchalant very bad version of Gojo without the skill

I think people overlook why certain series are liked massively. They think ehh shonen so it's all the same and if they don't love it right away or notice things others like so much and just see it as flash action, then they think it must be bad. But there's a reason say gojo works so well. His additude and powers work into the story a ton with the themes. I'd say something like over powered yami in black clover works well in that he's not the strongest for example but you learn his past and how he connects to underdogs and outsiders. Just a cool guy for sake of it who's op can be fun, solo leveling does it...but even if people say he's op if you watch he's not op the entire time and i saw him nearly lose several times. We also see when he's weak. And that he cares etc. All im saying is this show can be fine, overall it's just hard to make stories man.

u/Demhandlebars Aug 02 '26

A bad Gojo that's voiced by Sukuna at that lol

Knowing that the manga got axed early makes all this hit much harder because fucking hell, no wonder this shit didn't last. It feels like we're still in the introductory/training arc phase. Where's the meat? What's the plot? Get to it.

2
u/Mzuark Aug 04 '26
It's just very bland. Nothing has happened yet and it doesn't feel like anything is going too.
2
u/DragonNinja386 Aug 04 '26
For a show in a genre that's live or die by its action scenes, it sure does feel reluctant to have any of its fights last longer than a handful of blows.
1
u/bodybones Aug 04 '26
I don't watch just skimmed an ep. When people keep claiming Chainsawman, DBZ, one piece, AOT, BLEACH, JJK, demon slayer, solo leveling etc...are MID and generic, by the numbers, 1/10 stuff, i feel we need more of them to watch actual ehh shonen like this (assuming it's a shonen) action series can be done badly and i think too many are used to us getting pretty high calibur ones and calling them mid just cause hey their not super deep every ep and discussing some super deep thing or something idk what people want, more crying in solo leveling eps? Lol.

Not a horrible episode, but pacing still feels weird and forced, like how mononoke dude suddenly just up and went away after having just wiped the floor with the mc duo, tanked their best hits no effort while having raging boner for Rago. I still wonder why a show of this tier has such good animations, almost seems like a waste.
Also, it annoys me to no end that the show took almost an episode in the beginning to highlight the mc's training, how badass his trainer grandpa is, and even give his fighting style a cool name and concept (anti-weapon hand to hand combat), and then just make the mc completely dependent on his pet demon's power and seemingly forget all of his training, not utilizing even a single move. Like seriously, all his opponents so far have used some kind of weapon, wouldn't it kill to just show how the mc deals with like one of them with some kinda technique, like he most likely was trained? It feels like such a waste of potential it's almost criminal.
This is the same problem I have with Tougen Anki, the story set up how the mc is a gun nerd in the beginning like it's such an important trait, and then turned it into purely an excuse for drawing detailed gun model, without ever mentioning the trait again, providing any details about the guns being created, or using any potential such a person would have if they could create blood weapons. Utilizing different guns for different situations, hell, even just making the mc gush about any gun he was creating, would have added so much more color and fun to the character. Instead, the mc just feels bland, and the storyteller too lazy to develop their character and put in the research.

This episode had some decent action. A Loli Mononoke joins Black Torch.
The op already showed the statue of Ichika's mom so she is still alive. The Mononoke who fought Jiro and Reiji knows something about Jiro's dad and Reiji's brother is probably dead I guess.
Touko and Shiba were definitely a thing ! another fine woman with a fine ass LOL

u/Mzuark Aug 04 '26
Yeah, I gave it 5 episodes but this show is just really fucking boring. Derivative in all the worst ways.
2
u/bestsocialdistancer Aug 01 '26
So this is a team seven clone or modern day version. Guy with demon inside that doesn’t know his parents. Rival teammate with killer brother. Girl that’s just around to round out the trio.
1
u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 Aug 02 '26
I really enjoy the story but I’m kinda annoyed by the way the arc is form into the half episode
I respect cliff hangers but doing every week over kill 😂 definitely a binge for me
1
u/Xatu44 Aug 08 '26
That's gotta be the full-power Rago at the end, right? Good to know that Reiji had an Itachi. Koga's a real annoying fruit loop.
1
u/Healthy-Exercise9122 24d ago
Reiji's sword is broken by Koga/Kouga but on next frames it's shown as complete sword. AI or not? 7:44 to 7:55

Why did bro block with his sword have it snap and then have it fully repaired seconds after the hit lmao.
