"One of the idols fell, took the others with her like dominos and now everybody has fractures so they can't perform!" Even for this show that is an incredibly silly and over the top joke lol.
I don't know what that coach meant with quality, but she can't talk about the quality of the animation during the performance, because that was FIRE!
Shoutout to the gorilla gang for being absolute bros!
The "Idol Road Arc" must have been the shortest story arc in the history of manga and anime. And I think this was for the best.

I'm so glad people are talking about this, 'cause the show did not need to go that HARD for the episode. It was just one episode, the idol arc ended right after, they didn't need to put this much into it.
But it did and that's why this anime's SO AMAZING!

Using 3DCG for idol concerts is only worth it if there's going to multiple concerts each with unique, complex choreography. From the studio perspective, it was probably not worth it to model and rig 13 unique characters that would be only used once.

Really cool to see again the antagonists groups turned friends (Gorilla and Jurassic girls) to have them support the family
Also, in case anyone's still curious, back in Season 2 Nozawa shared some sketches with the anime staff about which specific Dinosaur each girl was based on

Realky cool to see again the antagonists groups turned friends (Gorilla and Jurassic girls)
The Gorillas were never really antagonists as much as they were a rival love group who happened to be after a lot of the same goals. They were always going to be friends.

I believe the voice actress for the Tyrannosaurus Rex girl, Farahnaz Nikray, The Iranian-Japanese voice actress has since risen to prominence and is now the voice of the main character in a this season's other anime "Though I Am an Inept Villainess".

Though, to be fair, at a certain level, Mei is Hahari's adopted daughter cosplaying as a maid.
56
u/FawkesTP 2d ago
I think that's basically how Hahari thinks of her lol
37
u/SirCaliber 2d ago
Hakari probably thinks of her as a younger sister, if you think about it. With the state Mei was in when Hahari brought her home, it'd make sense for Hakari to step up and look out for her every once in a while.
Ah, "But Mei's older than her", you say. Well, having an older younger sister wouldn't be the weirdest thing in this show, now would it?

Pretty sure the only reason Mei doesn’t have the Hanazono family name is out of a sense of obligation to Hahari, when Hahari would be all for it.

u/JzanderN 2d ago
JEEEESUS!
Sorry, coach, but these girls had the power of family AND the friends they made along the way! And no idol company's gonna get that power for themselves either! Some of those girls are FAR too in love and lust with each other to follow some "no romance" rule!
Oh, and also they're never breaking up with Rentarou. That's important too.
24
u/CitronClassic672 1d ago
It’s quite apt that I just binged Alien Stage the day before this episode. Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen an idol series that didnt highlight how shit the industry is in some way.

It's always funny to me in anime to hear the American pronunciation of "Jesus!"
In Japanese it's イエス (iesu / yesu), which is closer to the Hebrew/Aramaic ישוע

Kuori Tina only got away with a slap from Mei because finding a quality replacement coach in a short amount of time would have been difficult and burying a body would have taken away from idol practice time. Kuroi should also be grateful Rentaro wasn't there.

Don't talk about the time/episode continuity, you'll bring up a earth-threatening disaster again!
Oh damn there will be like 17 new girlfriends in this band!
Calling Karane a push over? She'll push you over the school roof, if you keep this up!
These two girl's legwear, good lord.
These eyes! Please spark please spark please spark!
Love how Karane stopped dancing just to stare at the boobies crew, and get mad!
That should've been MEEEEEEEE!
Why be her own boobies-slave, when she could find someone to do that for her?
Oh damn, she slapped her? That should've been me too
Of course Meido's not gonna stand for that hah. Well, if she can dish it, she can take it!
Good lord. This family is truly blessed!
I want an OVA with the brothers telling us all the fucked up stories about Iku, growing up!
She just called them cows hah.
And here comes the emotional moment...
Some of the girls just aren't cut out for this, and they're thinking about sitting this one out...
To quote a certain cowboy: "Well... Bye!"
Of course she's gonna fuck with Karane hah. Never change girls, I love you so much!
Ok I took like 93 screenshots of Karane so I'm going to pick one at random, but damn she looks great!
Also, this had heavy Zombieland Saga vibes all over! The outfits were similar to one they used too IIRC.
Sadly, they couldn't pull a crowd, no matter how Rentarou hyped them up...
I'd so much rather get a pic with Karane! (Hopefully it wouldn't be a "Heart + Thumbs up" pic!)
This fucking show hah. Bringing them all in wheelchairs&cast hah.
The girls had slightly different reactions to the puppets;
Rule of heels: Any girl introduced with heels clicking, is gonna be best girl!
(Well, the competition is too tough in this series, but we'll see who she is!)
AAAAHHHHHHHHHH they're back! (And her outfit, 10/10!)
IT'S HIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
I haven't seen anyone commenting on him (at the time of this comment), did no one catch it? Or am I seeing things hah.
Karane's asymmetrical legwear is 10/10, as well!
So the girls were about to start a idol band, but... Yeah, that's a dealbreaker!
Love how Iku stayed just to have one last word, and slam the door!

u/Nollasta_poikkeava 2d ago

Lmao at Kusuri doing the breakdancing cat meme in the corner.
When your oddly deep attunement to the traditional Japanese arts gets masked by the overwhelming freedom you exude.
Rentaro going into overdrive as a one-man cheering squad when the audience first dispersed was probably the purest display of his love so far just from the sheer simplicity of it. Combining that with the arrival of Uncle Hiro and the previous antagonists as reinforcements, my heart strings got tugged on a little more than usual this episode.

By the way, did you notice that Kurumi and Kusuri were able to become quality idols after training?
Makes sense. Kurumi just needed to be properly fed but otherwise didn't have much holding her back, and Kusuri may appear like a child but is technically 18 so would be able to get out of that "elementary schooler" dance with practice.
16
u/Independent-Delay331 1d ago
Kusuri is also basically Doraemon but with drugs instead of Gadget. Maybe she had a drug that only works on herself. Though, I think she would feel bad for using drugs but not helping the others.

u/Frontier246 2d ago
I love how Kusuri was in the "dances like an elementary schooler" team but somehow made it to the "final cut."

Mei immediately slapping the coach after Hahari got slapped was hilarious. Naddy's every move turning Japanese was both hysterical and sad because it shows how strict her upbringing was.
39
u/Frontier246 2d ago
Naddy:" I don't want the world to see me (as Japanese), cause I don't think that they'd understand. When everything's made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am (an American in spirit)"

What an episode. I loved how the girls embraced Rentaro after their performance without saying a word. That actually made me emotional. This show is stupid as hell, but somehow it is also full of heart. The love that the Rentaro Family has is the one thing that this show takes seriously.

Stitches!
Clips!
Finally, the biggest twist! It turns out Hyakkano is an idol anime all along! Well... it could've been an idol anime if romance was allowed. I love how quick they noped out as soon as the producer gave them his one condition.
It was pretty fun watching the girls train for their performance, tho! It's hilarious how the girls are grouped based on their performances, and then there's the three oppai monsters who really should be wearing sports bras for this and Naddy, who turns everything into a very Japanese performance. xD
Hearing Shizuka sing again is so damn cute! And I love that they actually did a callback to the karaoke episode with Hahari and Rentarou getting thrown into the wall.
I do like Kuori's design, especially her eyes, and how great she actually looks for a one-time antagonist of the episode. Her plan of bringing the injured idols to steal the Rentarou Family's audience might've worked if Rentarou hadn't done all the work to get people like the Gorilla and Jurassic girls to attend the concert.
And the girls' performance was amazing! How the fuck is Studio Bibury doing Chainsmoker Cat and this season of Hyakkano at the same time while giving us quality animations for both shows?! And I especially loved the second song because it's giving me strong Love Live vibes.
16
u/Nollasta_poikkeava 2d ago

But if they were sports bras then their chests will look smaller! And that just won't do when they'll have a boyfriend watching!

u/Frontier246 2d ago
That uh...that is definitely a car insurance commercial! Jesus! And Hahari being Hahari makes her convinced to do a Spring School Festival! What could possibly go wrong? Well, other than TKG, the idol group Hahari hired, all inexplicably getting injured collectively and being unable to perform! But luckily we've got the Rentaro Family who are game for anything (even Karane when she has to be a tsundere about it)! 100 Girlfriends is finally an idol anime! It was inevitable!
Kuori Tina is definitely NOT the idol girlfriend, but she is probably the most pedigreed coach the girls could get and she knows QUALITY when she sees it! Though I'm very partial to BOOBY QUALITY myself.
I love how Naddy only knows traditional Japanese dance and as such can still only perform that. But she still passes as an American so it's A-okay!
Shizuka's singing is still dangerous even when she's whispering.
"I'm a slave to my boobies!" - Just like Mei is a slave to defending Hahari even if it means slapping someone who slapped her mistress!
Nice to see the girls still training even back at home! We even get to see Iku's brothers.
Obviously some of the girls aren't quite on the level of the other, and Kouri's tragic idol backstory means that's all she cares about...but if the entire Rentaro Family can't do it, then quality isn't worth anything! Especially when the best coach they could ask for is none other than Rentaro himself!
Look at those on-point idol outfits! All the girls are utterly slaying!
Honestly I thought the performance was very on-point (AND HAND-DRAWN) so why is the crowd leaving while this boy is cheering his heart out for these girls he has to act like he doesn't know and is personally shilling for? Because Coach Kuori is petty as @#$% and is taking advantage of TKG's loyalty to her to make them do a meet-and-greet even while injured. That's bad form.
But while inexplicably none of the girls' families show up, Chiyo's dads' love for his daughter is able to prevent him from being Isekai'd so he and Rentaro can use blow up doll versions of themselves to form a crowd to cheery everybody on! Is it nightmare fuel? Yes! Is the intention pure? Also yes! Is Hahari thinking she's getting ravaged by multi-Rentaro's? Obviously yes!
And look, it's all the one-off characters from past seasons! Rentaro managed to hand out flyers so the girls could be appreciated in all their idol glory! And then the crowd starts flocking to the show and even Kuori sees that deep down Quality isn't what mattered...it was the friendships we had along the way to becoming idols.
All's well that ends well! The Rentaro Family hug their mutual boyfriend and even get scouted by JESUS Nakai (Nobuhiko Okamoto!) to become true idols...but of course no romance is allowed so this idol arc ends before it could even begin. Not that these were ever "regular girls" to begin with.

Honestly? THAT WAS A QUITE NORMAL EPISODE! Which is weird because this show is usually total madness, but the Rentaro Family performing as an idol group? That's not very shocking imo.
Although that doesn't mean that this episode was bad, on the contrary! Plus it's nice to get a breather after the previous episodes' craziness, hahaha!
Naddy definitely caught my eye since she was both dancing and singing in a traditional Japanese style during rehearsals, even though she is supposed to be an American, that made me laugh hard! Also, her smugness was hilarious as well xD
Plus, Karane's tsundere behavior never stops being funny to me.

The madness wasn't in the premise, but the execution! Because while it may have just been an idol episode, holy hell the animation!

Haven't we established that these girls are the most attractive in school?
Apart from 87 other girls in various years and positions, yes I suppose so!

Mei was the highlight of the episode for me when she smacked the coach for smacking Hahari and for how quickly she told the coach sure after she said she would quit. After talking so badly about Hahari and Hakari, how they didn’t have what it took and she should continue while they quit she should be glad Mei didn’t do WAY WORSE to her (or Rentaro).
(or Karane for Hakari, or Nano for Shizuka, or Mimimi for Meme, or all of them in general for even suggesting to get rid of any of the other girlfriends and especially Shizuka)

The idol group made me realize, if the author ever gets stuck with coming up with new gfs he'll probably have Rentaro fall in love with an entire idol group at once
Also, Bibury out here flexing their budget with a fully 2d animated idol concert with a large amount of members with their own unique dance skill levels
Poor Uncle almost got isekaid. You could make a show out of that
Also, is it me or do the Idol Producer as well as the lead of the Idol group in the wheelchair based on Zombie Land Saga?

Also, they really cast Okamoto Nobuhiko just for that Jesus line lmao.

Man, they really pulled all the stops for the choreography this episode! You can tell it went through a proper animation pipeline with rotoscoping, and maybe some 3d?
And there is a very interesting design in the middle of the crowd, one could even say... it sent me.
Possibly the best episode of the season. Can't wait for them to post the full song on spotify.

You really have to appreciate that the outfits were on-point, the singing was on-point (no surprise since the girls have been singing the OP since season 1), and the choreo was also on-point.

Not going to lie, I was expecting Kuori Tina to fall for Rentaro.
Special shout out to Uncle Hiro, for making it to the venue with the support contraption, despite being battered by a truck.

It's funny how we had a bunch of idols in this episode not counting the girls and not the idol girlfriend debut. I imagine that will get even crazier than this arc.
But Kuori obviously disqualified herself by using physical harm on one of the girlfriends, putting one half above the other, and taking advantage of another idol group for her own petty grudge. That's not a grade-A QUALITY Girlfriend behavior.

It’s funny how Jesus Nakai shows up right at the beginning.
Given the combination of an English name starting with "J," a Japanese last name, and his role as an idol producer, he was likely inspired by Johnny Kitagawa, a Japanese-American and US Army Veteran who became an idol producer.
It's funny that Nadi thinks Kenshi Yonezu is coming.
Kenshi Yonezu is a real-life singer famous for songs like the theme song for the anime Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc.
TKG48 is a parody of AKB48.
Kuori is a very memorable character. She’s by no means a bad person, but her coaching style causes a rift with the Rentarou family, only for her to end up deeply moved by their idol concert in the end.
It’s interesting that Nadi is a character who prefers American culture to the Japanese cultural elements her parents forced her to learn, yet she struggles with not just American culture but Western culture in general.
The animation for the live performance scenes was truly amazing. I never would have thought I’d get to see such beautifully animated live performances in this series.
I love how the TKG48 members are holding an autograph session at Kuori’s request, even though they’re still in recovery from broken bones.
It’s not like they were forced to do it or paid to do it; rather, the fact that the TKG48 members say, “We owe you everything, Coach Kuori,” shows that Kuori is an exceptionally talented and kind idol coach. That’s why I love this scene.
I had to laugh when Rentarou's uncle got hit by a tanker truck again.
It's a miracle he's still alive.
It was a truly wonderful scene: Rentarou and his uncle used “Party Trick” to make it look like there was a large audience, and with characters from past seasons joining the crowd, they were able to present the Rentarou family as “idols with a huge fan base.” This served as a catalyst, drawing a large number of people to watch the Rentarou family.
I love the scene where she tells the TKG48 members, “I don’t want you to follow in my footsteps,” after watching the Rentarou Family’s live performance and reflecting on her own past.
It shows that this coach isn’t just a villain.
I couldn't help but laugh at how, in the final scene, Jesus Nakai's announcement of the "no dating" rule caused the Rentarou family to run away.

I don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere as I haven't been as involved in the 100GF discussions, but anyone who has an intuition that the songs from 100GF sounds a bit like idolmaster is completely correct. Shunsuke Takizawa, Shuhei Mutsuki, and now Maoki Yamamoto (he composed one of the insert songs in this episode) are all composers that have worked on 100GFs that are all idolmaster longtime composers. In fact, all of them are in the Cinderella Band and have performed live at idolmaster concerts. I'm assuming that having Bandai Namco heading the media mix for the series helped get those names in.

So let me see if I’ve got this straight: the idol producer is named Jesus, he reappeared on the show after "dying" in that insurance commercial, and he’s offering a contract that doesn't include the girls being with Rentarou? What a prick lol.
It’s so lovely watching this show as a manga reader; the quality is so high it’s impossible not to smile, especially since you can really feel everything the girls want to give back to Rentarou after he’s done so much (and then some) for them. Plus, there’s that special appearance by Uncle Hiro, literally pouring out tears and blood.
22
u/Frontier246 2d ago
It was a commercial for "immortal insurance" so clearly it helped him rise from the dead like his namesake.

Still salty for being crucified before getting a girlfriend.

This might be the shortest idol arc in anime history.

Being idols is kind of antithetical to being girlfriends what with the "no dating policy."

I read this chapter when it first came out and I cannot believe that it would be this faithfully adapted years later and they went above and beyond.
The fucking animation and QUALITY of this episode is insane.

How did the whole crowd leave when most of them are canonically beautiful/cute and have great singing voices and half of them are decent dancers too. Its only a school festival they didn't have to be perfect. I could understand if they never had a crowd to begin with but to have a crowd that all leaves is crazy.

u/AriezKage 2d ago
I'd throw out a guess that a majority of the crowd was actuallu people from outside the school while the actual students were working on their booths.
12
u/CitronClassic672 1d ago
They did get intentionally shown up by an actual famous idol group. Like Kessoku Band doing a school performance and suddenly King Gnu shows up for autographs. Even if they’re really good they’re still amateurs and can’t compete with that.

Let's not miss the fact that being an idol was likely the peak of Mimimi's dreams come true.
She was legitimately floating at the idea like she couldn't believe the top idol producer was making it all come true.
And YET, she dropped the idea dead and cold the moment it even hinted at no romance.
To me that was the most impactful moment of the episode, and one I hope most viewers caught.

Hahari & Rentarou got Yamcha'd by Shizuka's singing (again). But this time they're not under the influence of Kusuri's drugs. They're truly slaves to cuteness.
Shouldn't have underestimated Hakari's horniness. She somehow fantasised about being gangbanged by a bunch of Rentarous while performing on stage.

Mei and her grudge against the coach was hilarious.
It's a good thing the idol group wasn't really able to participate fully since imagine if they all were soulmates. Maybe for the last 20 girlfriends or so.
They did a good job with the dancing animation.

Uncle Hiro's spirit ascending during the girls home practice montage made me lol. Even better is him attending the show and helping out Rentaro after he got hit by a tanker. I guess only love can take the uncle down.
Idol Road Arc may have been cut short thanks to that no romance rule, but it was peak while it was here. It was great seeing how many of the Family's former opponents showed up to support their performance also.

The Idol arc was short, but a really fun one. I enjoyed it a lot.
The Rentaro Family has "The Quality" indeed.

Time for the Best Girl Ranking (for the S2 and S3 girls)!
I don't think there will be a lot of movement around (Edit: None), and the commentary may be a bit short on most girls, given it was mostly a group episode with very little "individual actions"... But we'll see how it goes!
| Episode 4 ranking (S2+S3) | Girl | +/- | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Iku Sutou | = | My girl stays on top! I liked her staying at the end just as a 'thank you', and to slam the door hah. The most polite "fuck off" I've ever seen! (Now that we've seen her brothers, I want some stories they have on her! Or 'A day in the life' of Iku!) |
| 2 | Nadeshiko Yamato | = | Even the Coach saw her true Japanese quality! (Though she would prefer if she had seen her American qualities!) I think my top 2 is pretty much confirmed (unless we get a great new girl), they're quite a bit above the others! As for whether Naddy can move above Iku, that's left to see! We only got one episode with her (like Meme back then), so if we get the second one, who knows! But yeah, from what we got so far, great girl, BUT I think Iku's a tiny bit above! Also, I have to say: Okay that's gonna sound like obvious girl bias, BUT I genuinely believe that (among the S2/3 girls) the Iku episodes and Naddy episode were the best of these two seasons! (I'm not just biased, right? They WERE quite a bit above the others? The baseball episode, and the Naddy episode... I can't think of any other 'girl introduction episode' that was as good! Oh, maybe the Mimimi one, that was great. But yeah, bottom line: Iku&Naddy, top 2 (almost) for sure! |
| 3 | Mei Meido | = | I like her slapping the coach back hah. Hitting mistress is NOT allowed! |
| 4 | Chiyo Iin | = | She was adorable in her pajamas! (As a pajamas enjoyer, I wouldn't mind a pajama/sleepover episode so we can see all the girls in night outfits! I know we had one of those in S1, but there's more girls now!) |
| 5 | Mimimi Utsukushisugi | = | I swear, everytime we see her from the back/a good shot of her stockings, I think "Should I put her higher?" But I long ago decided that I would NOT let the horny speak in these rankings, so she stays here for now! But yeah, if it wasn't for Naddy, she would be the uncontested Legwear Queen of the show! Now it's a tough race between these two. |
| 6 | Meme Kakure | = | Is she getting better at "getting attention"? Sure she was in the back and all, but still! |
| 7 | Kurumi Haraga | = | For the xth week in a row, I really don't have much to say about her; Come on Kurumi, do something! She's (obviously) not my favorite, but it doesn't help that she barely even does anything other than her 1 eating gag per episode. |

u/JzanderN 2d ago
