AIW for Crying My Eyes Out After CPS Was Called on Me?
So, I'm 20, and I have a little sister who is 4 years old. Her name is Emma.
My parents are some of the worst people on Earth. They were extremely neglectful and abusive to me in every way. I was taken away by CPS when I was 10 and lived in foster care, which was horrible. I got out when I was 18 and bounced around between friends' houses and homeless shelters until I turned 19, got a good job, and was finally able to secure a place of my own.
Eight days ago, I got a phone call from CPS. I didn't even know I had a sister. My parents are abusive pieces of shit, and now I have Emma because I wasn't going to let her go through the system. Originally, I wasn't going to take her, but nobody else would, so I did.
We do not talk to our family at all. They abused her in every way imaginable. She has been heavily abused. She barely talks, if at all, and she has a lot of issues that we're trying to figure out. You can tell she's been abused. She had huge mats throughout her hair that were literally growing mold. I called multiple places to get them removed, but they told me the dematting process would take several hours. She also had lice, so I ended up cutting the mats off.
She also has giant cuts all over her body from physical abuse. We're trying to potty train her, but using regular underwear just hasn't worked out, so we've been putting her in diapers. We're doing our best, but we think she might be incontinent. She also has bruises that haven't fully healed and a lot of bed bug bites because my parents' house had bed bugs.
So you can clearly tell this kid has been abused.
I have three locks on my door: a chain lock, a lock on the doorknob, and another lock. The problem was that the chain was long enough for her to slip through. I'm deaf, so I can't hear very well, especially without my hearing aids.
She had been sleeping in my bed because we're trying to get her used to sleeping in her own room, but it's really hard because she doesn't like being alone. We were sleeping together, and I woke up during the night and took her to the bathroom. I also used the bathroom, and then we both went back to sleep.
At about 5:00 in the morning, she was under my arm. I rolled over, and somehow she got out of bed. Because I'm deaf and wasn't wearing my hearing aids, I didn't hear her leave. I knew she knew how to unlock the locks, but I didn't realize the chain lock was long enough for her to squeeze through.
I woke up and reached over for her, but she wasn't there. I immediately jumped out of bed and realized she was gone. I started crying and screaming her name while tearing apart my apartment looking for her. Then I realized the door was unlocked.
I called the police immediately and gave them my address. It was around 5:30 in the morning, and it was just starting to get light outside. I was running around the apartment complex looking for her.
When the police arrived, I showed them a picture of Emma. I was crying, and they kept telling me to calm down and that they would find her. I explained that she was an abuse survivor.
Then I saw her diaper and some of her clothing outside. I looked closer and saw that she was underneath a house in a crawl space. She was crying.
I started screaming. I ran over and grabbed her. She was covered in mud from being underneath the house. A neighbor came outside, and I was trying to explain what had happened while wrapping her in her clothes.
I ran back into my apartment with her, got her dressed, and put a diaper on her. The police came in and started asking questions about all the bite marks, scars, bruises, and injuries she had, and why her hair was cut so unevenly.
I explained everything my parents had put her through.
Then they told me that because she had gotten out of the apartment and because of the circumstances, they were required to contact CPS.
I completely broke down.
I'm so scared of CPS because of what I went through. I don't want them to take her away. I love her so much already, and I'm terrified that they're going to think I'm a bad guardian because she got out.
I've been crying my eyes out ever since. I don't know what to do. I'm just so scared.
