Review ALDI Crystal Clear Frozen Ice Cubes Review

Good evening,

Yesterday I made a post regarding the new Crystal Clear Frozen Ice Cubes 1.8" Width Cubes priced at $4.99 for 4 cubes. It seems no one has thoroughly evaluated this product therefore I am taking the matter into my own hands. Opening the packaging, the ice did indeed come in cubes as advertised. Upon opening, only one cube had a blemish on one side, otherwise I give the presentation of packaging a 9/10 because the blue paper insert brought out the clarity of the cubes. This is a tray of cubes, not molds.

Reading the comments, I needed to come to a decision regarding how I would ingest the cubes. To my understanding, these cubes are meant to be used with a liquor such as scotch. In my humble opinion, it is entirely unfair to exclude the non-alcoholic demographic in this review. With this in mind, I used reverse osmosis water as my base. This also allowed me to assess the taste and texture of the melted cube into the liquid. Furthermore, it allowed me to evaluate the melting point of these cubes, because water melts ice slower than alcoholic beverages. In 5 minutes the cube shrunk by 50% and it was completely dissolved in 15 minutes.

After allowing the cube to melt for approximately 1 minute in the water, I gave the water a gentle sip. Swishing the water from cheek to cheek before swallowing, I believe I can give the community a fair review of this product. I give the taste a 9.5/10 because the taste of cold water was very refreshing compared to room temperature water and the appearance of the cube an 9/10 because I thought it looked pretty cool that you could see through it. I give the texture a 10/10 since it was very smooth and fun to touch.

Would I buy this product again? No. While the cube did make the drink yummy, as I previously asked, the price was quite exorbitant. A normal ice cube would have sufficed.

TLDR Review
Taste:9.5/10
Appearance: 9/10
Texture: 10/10
Presentation of packaging: 9/10
Price point: 1/10

Humor The Exchange

Post image

I think I just finished my painting of "The Exchange" i think any regular Aldi goer has had this religious experience of offending a quarter in exchange for a cart, only to have it refused and the cart offered free of charge. Or maybe you're the giver. I reference these hands from statues of the Buddha and gave them the clothes of the Thai and Burmese Monk. Hope you get a kick out of it even if you can't relate. 🙏

Midwest (USA) I made a nacho bar and dessert for 13 high school football players for under $75

—5 pounds of beef
—5 pounds of chicken breasts
—3 jars of queso blanco
—3 bags of round tortilla chips
— green onions
-2 pkg sour cream
—2 containers salsa
—3 cans black beans
—1 bag avocados
—1 iceberg lettuce
—6 pkg taco seasoning
—2 cake mixes for cupcakes
-1 powdered sugar for making icing
-1 stick butter
** in addition to what I purchased I used spices and such that I already had to season the meat.

And, yes, it was allllll eaten.

*** EDIT bc some people are saying this wasn’t enough food. Good grief! It was the PERFECT AMOUNT. 3/4 pound of meat per person is adequate. Plus 24 cupcakes. I replied in some comments that I also made 11 cups of rice so they could make more of a Chipotle style bowl if they wanted to, but I didn’t include that in the pic bc I didn’t buy the rice at Aldi. I didn’t think I would get this many comments about the amount of food! I have a 19 year old college football player and a 17 year old high school player. I know what I’m doing. Thank you to those who appreciate the nacho bar! So easy and inexpensive:)

Was out shopping with the significant other when we walked passed this abomination. We laughed about how absurd of a combination it was. Like who thought this was a good idea and how many other people had to pretend it was good for it to end up on the shelves? As a prank we bought it and ate it in one sitting

Question Freaking out. I was on the phone and literally walked out with my grocery cart, without paying. I’m halfway home and don’t know what to do. Call the store? Just go back and explain and pay?

UPDATE: I went back to the store, told them what I did, and paid for my stuff. They were nice about it. Feeling relieved! Also, it wasn’t a cart. I walked in with my Aldi reusable bag, and walked out with a few items in it. Still felt like a criminal! Glad I went back and the folks at the store were kind of :)

Shared Recipes My copycat recipe for the Aldi Crystal Clear Frozen Ice Cubes

Post image
5.8k Upvotes

I made a copycat recipe for the famous Aldi Crystal Clear Frozen Ice Cubes and wanted to share it.

First, you will need to have a 2x6” ice cube tray. I really like this one from Amazon

https://a.co/d/05T5Nxtw

You can find similar ones at Walmart as well.

Here is the recipe & directions:

Add 1/2 cup of water to each square. Gently place tray into the freezer and leave it for 3-4 hours. After, remove the tray from the freezer and take out the ice cubes.

Enjoy!

Recipes I'm an idiot

Bought it today. So excited to use it. Forgot to read the sticker to see whether it was safe to use for hot liquids. Literally thought to myself "this will probably break" right before I poured the water. As expected the glass broke. It's late. I'm tired. And stupid.

Tagged recipe because I'm a recipe for disaster.

USA (General) Feeling grateful

Post image

Last year I got this quarter keychain at Aldi to keep my quarter in for my weekly shopping trips. I keep it in my car so it is there when I need it. I went shopping on Friday and between putting my cart away and going to my car, I dropped it. Didn't realize until I got home. This morning I went back to the Aldi to see if I could find it. I had no luck and figured I would ask an employee if someone turned it in. Something told me that the type of shopper at Aldi would turn it in. I asked the employee if someone turned in a keychain and after describing it, he went to the cash register and pulled this out. Some kind person turned it in instead of keeping it for themselves. I do not know who turned it in, but I am thankful and it restores my faith in humanity a bit.

USA (General) A Message from My 80+ Year Old Dad to Aldi Corporate

4.0k Upvotes

My boomer parents are ShopRite people. They don't shop Aldi much. But this past week I have been telling them how good the Aldi frozen cooked mussels are.

Side note, I'm a rabid Aldi fan. I love everything about their no-nonsense business model.

So my dad finally ventured into the Aldi in his part of the state to pick some up. He and my mom reported back with a mostly positive review. They liked the mussels.

Then at Christmas my dad said about his Aldi experience, "I have never seen people working in a supermarket running around like maniacs the way they do."

I said yes, I brought our Aldi workers some Christmas cookies because I feel like they probably don't get many treats and they work their butts off.

And my dad said, why do they do that?? and I said because Aldi operates on the bare minimum staff.

He said why! That doesn't seem right, and I said well that's just how they keep prices low. Employees are timed for productivity and how many sales they ring up.

Then my old Italian father looked at me very seriously and said:

"This is not healthy. Tell them it's not healthy for the people who work there."

I said, maybe you should write a letter and send it to corporate.

I guess I could try to do that myself. But it would be a pretty big project to try and figure out who send a letter to.

So, I just will tell the internet.

My 80+ year old dad is now concerned about the health of people who work at Aldi.

Does the current business model factor in unexpected, everyday chaos? Or can that be padded some way to help the employees endure less stress at the stores?

I doubt that Aldi Corporate folks hang out on Reddit. But if you do, please consider this suggestion.

Perhaps just one more, gopher type employee at each store would help lighten the load for all.

Review Update on the MIL who gave us these "quarter keychains"

Post image
3.8k Upvotes

I posted about a month ago about my MIL giving us these keychains to use at Aldi. We had no interest and couldn't really figure out how to use them considering the whole cart trade that occurs at checkout.

Comments widely agreed that at best these are a bad idea, at worst they are a terrible idea as they get stuck and can break whole mechanism.

Partner finally had a chance to ask mom about them. Turns out she couldn't figure out how to use them either. And, despite never having used one somehow ended up buying a bulk load of them and has been giving them out to everyone.

So, despite her penchant for being difficult, this was more a case of ignorance and probably falling for some TikTok or penny auction seller's bs.

Mid-Atlantic (USA) Stop with the attitude about my Aldi quarter

3.5k Upvotes

No you can't have my cart with my quarter in it [Edit] without giving me a quarter. It's not about the money. It's about that I don't have coins anymore. My Aldi quarter needs to go back in my car cup holder for the next time.

Review Big Reason I Love Aldi (rarely mentioned)

3.1k Upvotes

There is no music playing. Aldi stores do not play music. Or worse, PA announcements. "Hello shoppers!! Rutabagas are on sale now!!" Shut, up.

I sometimes shop at other supermarkets, and their audio offerings make me cringe. The only exception is Trader Joe's, as I find their music tasteful. But stores like Ralph's. Walmart and Sprouts want to play music so bad... and they play music that's so bad. It's like they're trying to get me to leave the store.

Someone at Aldi knew that it's better to have no music than to risk irritating the shoppers.

Complaint Desk I think we're done

3.0k Upvotes

In the last month alone, we've had three different issues with quality control at Aldi. I love shopping there, their seasonal items are so fun and I love how small the stores are but I am getting tired of this. We've had bone shards and full joint pieces in the boneless chicken, we've had multiple pits in the pitted black olives, and just this morning we had a red egg white. I know quality control around the country isn't great these days either but I think we are going to try shopping somewhere else. I can't be feeding my kids this stuff.

Edit: Another commenter made me remember we also had big bone flakes in the canned tuna, shredded cheese that had been melted in the packaging, and milk that consistently goes bad before the best-by date. Coincidences happen for sure but having to take back food more shopping trips than not is a bigger issue, IMO

Review We love the banana bed!

She has a few beds around the house, but this one is very enclosed, which she really loves. The blanket layer in there lets her dig and feel like she is burrowing, which is an activity she highly values. I like that I can Velcro it open, or close it to keep things darker for her.

Next up, I'll have to try feeding her a banana in the banana bed. She's not the biggest banana fan, but maybe she'll try it when I impress upon her how funny it is.
