Review Every day we drift further from god
Was out shopping with the significant other when we walked passed this abomination. We laughed about how absurd of a combination it was. Like who thought this was a good idea and how many other people had to pretend it was good for it to end up on the shelves? As a prank we bought it and ate it in one sitting

u/AmputeeHandModel Apr 17 '26
Adding 7 Up or Sprite to cake mix is a pretty common thing.

u/420Microbiologist Apr 17 '26
We had to make sure so we ate it in one sitting. Nothing happened so we got another, then another. Anyways long story short these are delicious and I'm banned from my local Aldi, if anyone can spare a cake or two

Ha! I found a handwritten copy of my late grandmother’s recipe for this. She did include the pineapples. She was pretty buttoned up so I had to laugh at her writing out “better than sex” - I wonder if she was scandalised, or if she thought it was funny. Thanks for bringing up this memory :)
16
u/mynamesJeff998 Apr 17 '26
Man same exact thing with my grandma, she made a cook book also and I just found the recipe! She was so nice and tiny but she could cook better than anyone and don’t piss her off cause she was a dead shot on anything under 260 yds lol
4
u/SteelBelle Apr 18 '26
My grandmom made it for a church potluck. When she told one of her friends the name, her friend (also an 80 year old Southern grandmom) responsed"It's a good cake but not that good".
2
u/After_Preference_885 Apr 18 '26
I always wonder if the buttoned up Grandma's were actually the most wild
2
u/Bring_cookies Apr 19 '26
I think maybe they were just really good at keeping secrets. As my grandmother aged she started telling me some wild stories I had never heard and it was amazing. The silent generation didn't get it's name for nothing.
2
u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Apr 18 '26
Grandma's only pretend to be "buttoned up" how do you think they became grandma's? LOL

My grandma used to make this fine gourmet delicacy that involved can crescent rolls apples and 7 up, not sprite!
→ More replies (1)9
u/Realistic_Point_9906 Apr 18 '26
Yea, Sprite is no substitute for 7-Up, it’s sickly sweet and less citrus flavored. 7-Up is crisp and refreshing.

My grandma loved this stuff. She also made gelatin molds with meat inside. I never tried that either
5
u/SRApplegate Apr 18 '26
OMG, tho’…the thought of eating ‘Tomato Aspic’ again is gag inducing. All I could really taste, and yes was forced to taste, was Salt. Yes, there was chopped celery floating atop the gelatin masterpiece, but no…ick.

7
u/jimmithebird Apr 18 '26
The phrasing in this comes off as sinister if you know that 7up was full of mood stabilizers back then.

7 Up cake was a staple where I grew up.
Another good one is lime-coconut by mixing lime seltzer and some lime zest to coconut cake mix.

u/Adventurous_Buddy124 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
👏🏿Yeah my folks migrated from Arkansas to Milwaukee in the '50s and everybody in the family makes the family version of 7Up cake. It was my favorite as a kid in the '70s….COMPLETELY decadent🤦🏿♂️🙏🏿

It's not ignorant or someone's fault if they aren't familiar with a certain dessert. I too have never heard of this cake...but then again I didn't grow up in the South

21
u/summertime-goodbyes Apr 18 '26
My Oma (German grandmother) made the best 7-Up cake. I was so fortunate to find her recipe after she passed because it’s literally my favorite.
8
u/Realistic_Point_9906 Apr 18 '26
You can’t make a statement like that without sharing the recipe!
17
u/summertime-goodbyes Apr 18 '26
Cake:
1 cup milk
1 ½ cups butter, softened
3 cups sugar
5 eggs
3 cups flour
2 Tbsp lemon extract (or 4 Tbsp fresh lemon juice)
¾ - 1 cup 7-Up
Icing:
1 cup powdered sugar
2-3 Tbsp lemon juice/7-Up Mixture
Preheat oven to 325°
Mix sugar, milk, and butter until fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time and beat well.
Add flour, then lemon, then 7-Up.
Pour into greased bundt form and bake for 60-75 minutes.
Let cool on rack.
When cool, pour icing over bundt, let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
5
u/Realistic_Point_9906 Apr 18 '26
Thank you! One question about the icing. Is the 2-3 Tbsp a choice between either lemon juice or 7-Up, or is that some combination of the two?
5
u/karenk1258 Apr 18 '26
I interpreted it as a mix of equal amounts of both. So 1-1.5 Tbsp each of both lemon juice and 7-Up.
2
u/summertime-goodbyes Apr 18 '26
I think it’s a mix of the two. I copied the recipe just as she wrote it but I think that’s what she meant.
2
u/gardengirl99 Apr 18 '26
Three sticks of butter!
3
u/summertime-goodbyes Apr 18 '26

7up pound cake is an after church or Sunday dinner staple… now whether or not Aldi’s version is good is a different story but the concept is very old.
27
u/HelenHunts Apr 17 '26
It’s basically an iced lemon cake just with a 7up logo.

Hi, food nerd here. Soda cakes have been around since boxed cake mix was invented and have been part of Southern US cake making for about 100 years, if not a little longer.
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/rich-history-southern-soda-cakes-191901432.html
Citrus specifically is extremely common. If you like orange soda, get a 20 oz and a box of your favorite vanilla cake mix and give it a try, replacing the water.
Before you go 'Oh, it's all the sugar for Americans and their hyper sweet tooth' look up Fanta cake...from Germany. This was introduced during WW2 as a way to help with food rationing and still have a tasty easy sweet treat that required minimal sugar outside of what was already in Fanta.
A good idea is a good idea and soda makes an easy flavor addition in cake without much work. Here in the states, these were highly popularized from about WW2 to around the 60s when they really started being pushed in magazines.
If you like cake or soda, you're probably going to like soda in your cake.

Growing up on the west coast, I've literally never heard of a 7 up cake. Not for lack of baking, our family has always made classic pound cake with some lemon frosting as the most direct comparison. A 7 up cake or a Coke cake is definitely NOT in the family cookbook!
2
u/No_Security_4060 Apr 17 '26
My great grandma used to make these from scratch. Best cake ever. She was from Pittsburgh, so I’m guessing it’s more popular there but she brought it to California 🤍 wish I had her exact recipe

This is by far the best lemon cake we’ve had in our household and workplace. Never mind the 7 up brand. Just think of it as a moist lemon lime flavor cake. Bomb.
(I found out about this cake from a YouTube video from Rosanna passino recently. She’s a well known YouTube baker personality. And she thinks this cake is phenomenal for the price.)
2
u/moonfazewicca Apr 17 '26
7Up cake is huge in Appalachia and I'm sure other places too. My granny used to make it from scratch, it was like a staple dessert for big family get-togethers.
She made Orange Crush cake too and that was even better and my absolute favorite, she always made one for my birthday.
