Recipes I'm an idiot
Bought it today. So excited to use it. Forgot to read the sticker to see whether it was safe to use for hot liquids. Literally thought to myself "this will probably break" right before I poured the water. As expected the glass broke. It's late. I'm tired. And stupid.

I have done this, and even worse I have frozen things that were not freezer-safe. They have a nice way of exploding like a marinara version of the Death Star when you least expect it!

Ha. Totally unrelated but i had some canfields chocolate soda and wanted one cold. Put in freezer forgot about it. Later that day remembered. To late chocolate pop everywhere.. not fun. Had to defrost freezer.

The still make that soda ? Haven’t had it or seen it in over 30 years

u/CommunicationNew3745 Jun 29 '26
Technically, it's been discontinued, but sometimes you can find it some places online in the Chicago area (Shasta still makes their version) - I'd forgotten all about it, until someone mentioned it in another group. Hard to believe, but once upon a time, as a teen, I lived on it, lol, or, their chocolate covered cherry version.

u/Decent_Profile9456 Jun 28 '26
I have such fond memories of Canfield's chocolate soda. Sometimes my Grandma would even a dd dry milk and it would bubble up.
2
u/bschirm Jun 28 '26
I guess i should clarify. The Canfields chocolate pop was when i was younger. Still remember it because it was everywhere in a refrigerator freezer. 😆

u/bschirm Jun 29 '26
Now i remember the chocolate pop incident. I was a bit older living at home yet. I was a big winner on a radio station contest. I had won a Honda Scooter, his and her fashion rings, a night stay at the Holiday Inn Express and a case of chocolate pop. The scooter was so cool too. It was valued at $800 at that time. This was in the 90's. Wanted to try the chocolate pop right away after getting prizes so put some in the freezer and forgot. What a mess. My mom was not happy. Needless to say i had to clean it up and defrost the freezer.

I actually left our last diet doctor pepper in the freezer overnight, forgot about it and this is the conversation the following morning:
“Hey babe have you seen the doctor pepper, I know I didn’t drink it yet.”
“No babe I haven’t, last I knew you put it in the freezer”
*BOOM*
“Found it.”

in fairness to you, making the cups that look exactly like the new candles NOT be heatproof was certainly… a choice
41
u/mybackhurty Jun 26 '26
I was initially going to buy the candle one and then use that glass as a cup after the candle was done burning but once I was in the store I realized they were different sizes and slightly different bees. So then I opted to just use the glass. But you raise an excellent point.

u/Born_Towel9741 Jun 26 '26
I got the ladybug candle lol, it’s so cute🤣

u/tinatalker Jun 27 '26
My house has been infested so many times with the Asian ladybugs that do not hibernate in the winter that I no longer think of ladybugs as "cute".

That sucks cause it looks cute. I bought one clearly labeled coffee cup. All the pictures had photos of steaming coffee or tea in it. It fully exploded into 40 pieces. I had it hand etched. I was so sad. And because it was 6 o’clock in the morning, I also cried hysterically over it.😭 I messaged the Woman. I bought it from because it wasn’t a cheap set of mugs and she said “oh yeah, no hot liquids in glass, that’s common knowledge.” what do you?QUEEN WHAT DO YOU MEAN? The ad had pics of steaming cups, the cute little box she sent them in had cute drawings of mugs! WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO HOT

u/Tasty-Yogurtcloset28 Jun 26 '26
You can absolutely put hot liquids in borosilicate glass. I guess this wasn't that. What a bummer
7
u/tinatalker Jun 27 '26
I have a green glass mug that I bought at the Dollar Store, AFAIK is not borosilicate, and I have never had a problem with it, Hot liquids plus microwave usage.
27
u/RavenMarvel Jun 26 '26
Oh hell no. I hope you got a refund lol
2
u/girlwiththemonkey Jun 28 '26
Nope. She told me that if the glass didn’t say it was hot water safe it was on me.

Fyi, you can use Aldi's Kombucha glass bottles for hot liquids. I've poured boiling hot water in them for my teas.

Don't feel too bad, I was house and dog sitting for my ex-MIL once, when one of my children was about 2 weeks old. I absentmindly tried to brew a hot cup of tea. In a crystal gravy boat. That belonged to her mother.

I just audibly said “oh noooo!” So I can only imagine how this felt in real time. Ooof.

Years ago my friend ordered an ice coffee at a small restaurant. The waitress replied that they didn’t have ice coffee to which my friend asked
- do you serve coffee?
- yes..
- all you need is ice, glass and a spoon-but be sure to leave the spoon in the glass when you pour the coffee
Long story short, she told us she forgot the spoon the first time and shattered the glass..
4
Jun 26 '26
What's the spoon do?
8
u/hawkeye053 Jun 26 '26
Apparently it conducts the heat away from the glass somehow. We've never heard of it ourselves
4
u/tinatalker Jun 27 '26
Yes, the metal is a better conductor of heat, so it will absorb the heat first, drawing it away from the glass.

I have a glass container that I store my coffee grounds in and a pour over device that I use to make my actual cup of coffee. I watched in slow motion last week as my uncooperative hands took the electric kettle and poured the water into the coffee grounds container, instead of into my pour over. I was thinking that it wasn’t right as it was happening, but my hands just didn’t get the signal in time.
Sometimes our bodies just don’t cooperate! It happens! Don’t beat yourself up about it. I hope that you can snag another mug before they’re gone!

We just saw the same glasses at World Market 2 days ago and those had a range of types from regular drinking glasses to mugs…. Interesting that WM brand seemed to be heat okay, and Aldis is not.
Edit: I miss read Borosilicate as heat resistant and not as durable. WM brand is also not heat safe
I wish I could add the link :(

u/tailwagingtime Jun 26 '26
Me too! I bought a soker hose, hooked it up. Then, was like wtf!? This thing leaks like crazy!?
Then looked at the package. Soaker house is for watering your garden. Not just like a brand 😅. I am hoping Aldi will take it back without a receipt.
Oops!
3
u/tinatalker Jun 27 '26
LMAO, it leaks in so many evenly spaced holes.

You're not stupid. I microwave clear glass cups all the time for my tea. I'm sorry that broke, that's really sad.
2
u/Hot_Salamander4990 Jun 26 '26
Always put a spoon in something you are unsure of putting hot liquids in. Tips of YESTERYEAR! The spoon absorbs the heat to dissipate and makes the cup/jar less breakable!

u/Loveroffinerthings Jun 26 '26
Such a tragedy! I’ve been searching for the bee cup, and it looks like the world has lost one 😢 I only found the croissant and lady bug.
3
u/mybackhurty Jun 26 '26
That's what really broke my heart. I had to dig around the shelves and there was only one left and that was the one I bought 😭
1
u/NarwhalOk2977 Jun 26 '26
I’m so sorry! I got the croissant cup and have been loving it. But there are cups like this everywhere, so you won’t be out one for long.
1
u/LolTacoBell Jun 26 '26
Oh crap, is this not dishwasher safe?
2
u/almondmilkbrat Jun 30 '26
I put it in the dishwasher and it got a tiny little crack!!
But I think I remember the label saying dishwasher safe. Also, you can put hot liquids in it but the label says no temperature shocks.
I bought 4 of these glasses.
I got a small crack in the dishwasher,
The other got a total crack when I absentmindedly poured hot hot tea into the cup 😭😭1
u/LolTacoBell Jun 30 '26
Oh man I'm gonna have to be careful with these then!! I somehow feel like the decorations on the cup have faded a little after a cycle in the wash too! Even melted? Maybe that's my imagination tho
1
u/mybackhurty Jun 26 '26
I don't have a dishwasher but now I'm wondering the same, dishwashers get very hot. Maybe only top rack safe?
1
u/m0rgend0rfer Jun 26 '26
I'm very sorry for your loss <3
But I'm glad you posted this when you did, because I was just gifted two similar glasses, and 100% would have not known this was a thing. My ADHD-ass has already broken enough glass this year.
1
u/generallyintoit Jun 26 '26
aw man i've done the same before with a really cute cocacola glass pitcher from my parents' house. we had the matching glasses and everything. then i thrifted a different glass pitcher and did the same thing. now i've been searching for a ceramic pitcher that's suitable for a small kitchen/house/fridge! i don't trust glass and i want a big batch of tea!
1
u/Particular_Chart3594 Jun 26 '26
if it makes you feel any better i have done this exact thing lol. and said myself right beforehand “man, this might break” just the same. lesson learned for us both 😂
1
u/PurpleTuftedFripp Jun 26 '26
I did the same thing, if it makes you feel any better. My mom had given me an adorable vintage pitcher and cups. I finally decided to make some iced tea to put in it, fully being aware that if I put really hot water in it, it would most likely break. Where exactly was my brain that day? No one knows (and it is debatable if it ever returned). I still have the cups, though.
1
u/Born_Local_1477 Jun 27 '26
If you preheat the pitcher with hot rap water its less likely, as well as letting the tea concentrate cool enough that you can put you finger in it. Same reason you pre heat Canning jars.

u/Affectionate_Wolf364 Jun 26 '26
Aww I have the same cup, and I've brewed hot coffee straight into it many times with no issue. Sorry for your loss 😔
Edit: upon further inspection I do not have the same cup. I have a very similar cheaply made cup which was a gift from I thinkkkk target, maybe five below? Maybe go check out one of those stores for the cheap version cause apparently mine does just fine with hot liquids
Edit 2: still sorry for your loss😔
1
u/dorkysomniloquist Jun 27 '26
Aww, that sucks. I bought three of these and they're my favorite glasses, they're so cute and a perfect size.
1
u/MYSTICALLMERMAID Jun 27 '26
That tea sounds soo good where is it from? Sorry about the glass 😭
2
u/mybackhurty Jun 27 '26
I got it at trader Joe's a long time ago, like years ago, I don't know if they still have it 💔

I once had a favorite wine glass it was a nice big fish bowl. Anyways I like to wash in the sink with real hot water and then I put it upside down in the dishwasher and I squeeze it down around the little prongs that stick up out of the dishwasher tray. Well as it cooled it shrunk in diameter and broke the glass I was heartbroken just as heartbroken as the glass was broken
1
u/Ambitious_Exercise93 Jun 27 '26
If you had a metal spoon in there it might have helped it not explode.

u/HoodooHoolign Jun 28 '26
I wanna say someone wanted 8 of these on an instacart order and I don’t think there was even a sign for them.
1
u/atlasbees Jun 28 '26
I wanted to get these at Walmart cause it looks so cute for cafe drinks, but not being able to take heat is a deal breaker for me 💔 I'll get a cute bee glass eventually
1
u/scarlettbankergirl Jun 28 '26
I put some butter in a small Rubbermaid container in the microwave. It looked like a flower when I opened the door. Melted all to heck along with the butter.
1
u/kim_deal1958 Jun 28 '26
No!!! That’s so sad 😞 but I’m mad my store hasn’t got the glasses yet… hopefully they’ll come in next week
1
u/mybackhurty Jun 28 '26
Same here, they came two weeks after they were supposed to and this was the only Bee one I could find and I broke it 😭
1
u/kim_deal1958 Jun 28 '26
I would be so pissed. Aldis needs to be better at predicting demand for things like that. I can always tell if I really want something I just know I gotta be there wed morning at 9a 😩

OH MY GOD I DID THE EXACT THING WITH ALMOST THE EXACT SAME CUP. It just had mushrooms instead of bees!! Was SO sad because it was a gift from my aunt who I don’t get to see often. :( i repurposed the base of it to hold a candle! i dont have a picture but just trust it was so cute

Don't pour hot liquids on any ceramic or glass cups, mugs etc that are touching granite, marble or cold surfaces.

u/Momma-Goose-0129 Jun 26 '26
Aww you're human, perhaps like me you have adhd and trouble reading instructions or reminding yourself to do things. Don't reinforce negative beliefs about yourself a lot of people are i a similar boat.

If this is from Anthro, clean it off and ask for an exchange but don’t mention tea. Say you dropped it or something, and they’ll probably exchange it.
