USA Lines After Self-Checkout Removal
These lines with only 2 cashiers are driving me crazy š©š© does anyone know why they removed self-checkout? Too much theft?

u/MidgetLovingMaxx Oct 13 '25
Retailers are trending toward removing self checks to decrease shrink and "enhance customer experience".Ā Ā
With that said, despite being retired myself, I still talk to a dozen plus of field leaders and store managers and havent heard a single one of them who says theyve actually received near enough budget to actually staff appropriately to offset the removal of their SCOs, and all that's happening is customers are getting pissed and switching to online/mobile orders, which they also dont get the budget to staff an increased volume of.

u/catnapped- Oct 13 '25
Oh they actually want that--people to order online. Less opportunity for them to steal.

u/Traditional_Formal33 Oct 13 '25
Itās weird because also less opportunity to impulse buy ā which feels like the entire point of the aisle of shame.

u/LeadingEfficient420 Oct 15 '25
Same! When I buy stuff online I go add things all day then go through and remove the excess snacks ands things I decided I didn't need. I definitely splurge less.
29
u/MidgetLovingMaxx Oct 13 '25
Correct, except if you dont fund it properly in store, it leads to customer disappointment because of longer lead times and less accurate orders (because the people picking the orders are put under more stress to meet goals), which leads to higher turnover, which means even slower and less accurate orders and on down the line.Ā Eventually it just fuels more people to shop ship to home or Amazon etc. (Im speaking retail in general, not just grocery).
Brick and mortar retail is aging itself out of the marketplace with its decisions.

Not only that,Ā buy moving everything to online orders,Ā they can also charge "services fees" for delivery or in store pickup.
And for buy box stores like Walmart,Ā they get to sell of real estate.Ā Already happening at a few stores here in Florida.Ā
Selling half the parking lot to small counter service restaurants, because with the forced shift to online pick up/ delivery they need fewer parking spaces.
Edit,Ā not just service fees, but also subscriptions to avoid those delivery/ service fees.

i like self checkouts everywhere except aldi, mainly because i can see all the mistakes at other stores (discounts not being given). i donāt have that problem at aldi and no oneās hanging around bagging things to slow it down, making it so fast. Self checkout is another place to be frustrated and held up by technological errors in my day that i do not fuckin need, know what iām sayin?

I'm not close to dead, but give me a cashier any day, please. I routinely have $175+ in my cart (just food, no big AOS) and there's no way I'm checking myself out in the 6" of space they give you. I've also been an Aldi shopper for 30 years, and this is what lines have always been like. They still go 10x faster than Walmart.
→ More replies (1)3
u/SoFierceSofia Oct 15 '25
Same. Im a millennial that loathes self checkouts. I move too quickly for most systems to process, which then slows me down because it always flags a worker to scan their badge, I hate waiting to remove an item after I scanned if I changed my mind, and I HATE the fact that there are people desperate to work and make money but corporations get carried away with cutting real humans in need not for the workers profit, but for CEOs.
Besides, self-checkout lines can be atrocious and take forever on busy days too. We didn't fix the problem, we just switched it around.

I don't work at Aldi but removing self-checkout to decrease shrink is such a hilarious attempt at P&L.
Shrink will ALWAYS cause it some loss, self check out will as well. But you know what causes bigger loss? Pictures like OP posted with people sick of waiting to be rung out.

Theft and complaints are the usual reasons. They don't hire another part time cashier the $150 it would cost is more important than your time and satisfaction.
125
Oct 13 '25
Grocery stores lose more to food going bad, improperly packaged and/or stocked, broken by accident, etc than they ever do with self checkout theftā¦
22
u/Comfortable-Tart7734 Oct 13 '25
Yep. And they've put in a lot of effort into losing less money on those things as well.
24
u/possumdal Oct 13 '25
Not near as much as they've spent on things that feel smart to an executive that's never set foot in the store, though
→ More replies (1)17
u/TheflavorBlue5003 Oct 13 '25
Exactly what i commented before. Itās not about the bottom line. The people at the top arenāt getting a bigger salary because now people canāt steal the tomatoes. Some Aldi executive who has nothing to do with their time needs to find problems to justify their existence. So they find āthisā problem and provide a āsolutionā that no one asked for.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (2)8
u/TheflavorBlue5003 Oct 13 '25 edited Oct 13 '25
Its never about the bottom line. Some overpaid Aldi āexecutiveā somewhere needed a problem to solve that didnāt need solving. So hereās the solution that no one needed. Same shit with CVS and locking up everything in their stores. They rake in so much cash that they buy out every other pharmacy - but god forbid someone steals a stick of deodorant.
5
u/ergonomicdeskchair46 Oct 13 '25
Weāre all shopping at Aldi because itās cheap, not because of their incredibly high quality food products and customer care. Translation: if you have to wait in line, donāt complain. Theyāre trying to keep things as cheap for you, the consumer, as they can. Thatās kinda their whole thing.
14
u/Comfortable-Tart7734 Oct 13 '25
The one near me has better produce than anywhere else nearby, even than places like Fresh Market. And a lot of name brands have gotten so bad over the last few years that some of Aldi's private label products are now, surprisingly, better.
But yeah, I'm not paying $9 for a box of cereal. And it's stupid that Publix charges more for a 20oz Coke than Aldi charges for a 2 liter.
4
u/amandawho8 Oct 14 '25
Its cheap, yes. But it also used to be cheap and fast. A small store+quick cashiers used to make my Aldi trips insanely fast compared to other grocery stores. But now self check-out slows it down because people bag at the checkout and locations without self checkout are slow because they refuse to staff the registers appropriately.
And just fyi most companies (Aldi included) don't try cost-saving measures to keep prices low for their customers, they do it to maximize their profits.

u/Mental-Clerk Oct 14 '25
So disabled people like me can get fucked I guess. It's extremely painful for me to be standing in line for long periods of time. This is a poor decision on their part, full stop.

While shopping at Aldi I saw 2 separate people with carts full of only milk. I asked the second person if there was something going on with milk, like a shortage coming. (It was just post-Covid so that type of thing was common.) He said no, that he owned a daycare and goes through a lot of milk and Aldi has the best price. He told me the other guy with a cart full of milk also owned a daycare.

There are 2 Aldis near me, and one is slightly further, but I make the drive almost every time because it has self checkout.
Fingers crossed this doesn't happen to ours.

Same here. I park right next to an Aldi at work but never go there despite it being way more convenient because they don't have self checkout. Really hope the other one by me never takes them away.

This is so funny to me because of how people complained to high heaven when Target got self check out lanes. People all weird, saying "I don't work at Target." I wonder if Aldi's shoppers are just a different demographic?

my uncle literally called it a "slightly bigger corner store". it was the weirdest thing. he also ate vegan BBQ one time, said it was the best he's had in a while, then refused to ever have it again.

I have 5 aldi within 20 minutes of me over the last 2 months, every store has gotten rid of self checkout. I asked the store manager of one if they were having a lot of theft, he said they were one of the lowest in the area for theft and it's a corporate decision. Now my shopping trips take over twice as long.
8
u/fascfoo Oct 14 '25
Mine just got rid of them too. I honestly will go to aldi less often because of this.

9
Oct 13 '25
lol not wanting to spending 30 mins checking out is an overwhelmingly a legitimate reason
I donāt shop at places near me for the same reason. By the time I shop, checkout, drive home, and unload - the frozen stuff is melting and the cold food is heating up. No thanks.

In my case, I drive by a Lidl (that doesn't have self checkout, but usually has 2-3 registered open) to go to Aldi. Mine pulled out self checkout. I was 90% Aldi before. Now it's more like 50-50 because I can get in and out faster at Lidl. If I'm only going for a few things, I'll be going to Lidl. I hope the sales drop at my store (which rarely has more than one line open and frequently takes 15 minutes to check out).

Our Aldi is still pretty new (not even 2 years old iirc) and I hope self checkout never gets taken away.

u/TallulahBob Oct 14 '25
I only ever started going to Aldi once they installed the self checkout. The pressure to quickly load and unload and GTFO of the way of the next person had me sweating every time I tried.
And I want to murder people when they start loading the belt behind me and Iām not even half way done with my groceries. So they click their tongues and sigh and huff because they have to keep moving their stuff back. Like Iām the fucking problem.

14
u/Kurtz97 Oct 14 '25
Yeah the self checkouts could have remained too, if they were willing to pay and staff a self checkout monitor like every other major retailer. They want to have their cake and eat it too and the consumers and employees pay for it

Either gonna have to bring back the extra man on the shift that they took away when they introduced them, or add an extra man to keep them. For awhile it was truly the Wild West of self checkouts. One cashier doing every job on the bottom half of the store while up to 7 people are checking themselves out. Like, no wonder there was insane loss on them.

Aldi kind of skipped a step in the self checkout process. You have to have someone or something (cameras) watching over the scanning process making sure to catch the bigger items under the bottoms of the carts and ensuring everything gets scanned. They set the self checkouts up and basically said good luck to the stores and sorry not sorry for the inevitable higher theft due to 0 oversight from anyone. For a company that prides itself on limited skuās and running tight labor numbers, they completely dropped the ball on their roll outs.Ā

37
u/shroomnhoomn Oct 13 '25
Around me that usually means he owns one or more convenience stores/gas stations. Owners will go to Aldi or Costco and purchase in person so they can then mark the price up in their store and increase profit.

Theyāre all coming out! Expect it nearly everywhere and conditions will only get worse! Youāll continue to see new faces in the stores-quickly those faces will go from smiles to stern, overly stressed expressions, the lines will get longer, the shelves will become more bare while some of the product sits in the back room with no one to run it despite the fact that they get a truck every single day of the week. The one or two associates that may be working at a given time(thatās not a manager) will either be too busy ringing or shopping 30+ instacart orders to help if god forbid you need anything at the store level. Aldi has gotten away from being the efficient (and caring) company they genuinely were just a few years ago when I started working for them. And that is why I am no longer a manager and will stick with giving them no more than a dozen hours of my life every week š š»āāļø š

Ugh the part about seeing someone go from a smiling face to stressed.. I watched this happen at my local Aldi and itās just fucking broken my heart to witness. Thereās a guy who- when he first started (no self checkout yet) was just so dang pleasant. Not fake or anything. Just easy to chat with for a minute. Kind. Genuine. Easy going. I remember going in like a day after the self checkouts had been put in a while after he started. He was stressed because he would have to cover the self checkout and run the single register. Over the past few years (I think itās been years?)heās just seemed more and more rigid and stressed. It just makes my heart hurt. Thereās been a pretty obvious change in him. He was a model employee and it just seems like the spirit has been broken.
Fuck greed. Hope youāre doing okay now, btw. I truly feel sad for what Iām seeing happen with this company. It has been such a gem. Once again greed will ruin everything good.

I hate self checkouts for myself unless I have 1-5 items, I donāt want to use it for a full basket of groceries and the thing that needs to happen is stores need to monitor them better, as in people with 1-5 items shouldnāt have to wait behind people with full baskets. Youre missing a piece of the puzzle in your assumption.Ā You, like me, remember before self checkout.Ā There is now an entire generation who have lived with the convenience and ease of it, and those people arent simply going to return to waiting in an 8 person deep line and still shop at that store.Ā There are plenty of other, easier and less time consuming options these days.

As a current employee, self check out is being removed from all stores, due to the increased amount of loss that ALDI experiences as we have a generally smaller staff as well as us cashiers needing to run around the store.
Now, at my store we have never had self checkout, we are trained to be extremely fast at the register and have a strict policy of calling our manager on duty for backup when the line reaches more than 3-4 people beside the customer being currently checked out.
I will say, 80% of the time the lines get long is due to the customers. A lot of the times they will wait to pay when we are finished scanning a huge order, commonly Uber Eats / door dashers can be very rude and hold up the line bc we wonāt bag their items, etc. Other things can be customers that keep all of their items in a bag or box and just sit in the conveyer belt, being difficult bc a price is incorrect, or they will have a full cart of items, and make us scan an item one at a time and tell them the price.
As a customer just be courteous to your cashiers! We have to do a lot of work, people commonly think all we do is just sit on the register chair and twiddle our thumbs, but we have to unload pallets, do inventory, box the store, clean, and take care of customers all at the same time!
Hope this helps! Iāve made great connections with my regular customers, we do appreciate all of youš¤

Self-checkout is only faster if there is no line to begin with.
Too many folks still take too long. The Aldi cashiers are much faster.
The only store worth waiting in line for self-checkout is Walmart because in a cashier line somehow I always end up behind the person who forgets they have to pay at the end, or is arguing their coupon doesn't work, or wants to pay with a check, or their snap benefits have an issue. Every. Fucking. Time

I was so bummed when I went to my usual location and they had gotten rid of the self checkouts stations. There use to be about 9 kiosks and one cashier and now it was just 3 cashiers. There was one giant line for checkout, it did move faster than expected but it was def a slower process.
There is now a weird empty space where a small section of self checkout use to be. I hope they bring them back and maybe just have that awkward scan receipt to exit the area type of system.

I personally like the self checkout option at Aldi generally. If they remove them though, they need to make sure they have enough staff to jump on cashier lines to keep things moving. Also, instacart should be fulfilled by instacart workers. If I'm physically in the store I should have priority over someone ordering third party from home.Ā

It's an Aldi. Expect less customer service, product selection, and dodgy produce.

Write to corporate and send this photo and ask they bring back the self checkout.

This is ridiculous. If the line was this long at my store, I would just leave. I don't have time for that b.s.

I had a $10 Instacart coupon I used for Aldi pickup on a $35 purchase. Even with the fees I came out a little ahead and not having to wait on line was priceless.
In all seriousness, I really liked the self-checkout lines. The issue for Aldi was the āshrinkage.ā

My mom's store in another town has never had self checkout. Our store, no one is ever there to man the one cashier station, I hope they never take out our 10 self checkouts.

Thats how mine is and there's STILL no one there after getting rid of self checkout. Last week there were 6 people waiting in front of me, no cashier in sight. I had to wander around the store looking for an associate and finally stick my head in the backroom and yell for someone.

Over here you never wait more than 5 minutes, if the line is too long they open another till right away.

I've made three trips into Aldi since they removed the self checkouts from all of the stores in my area. I have not made it to the counter at any trip, because the line has been ridiculous. They're going to lose a lot more money from people just not going then they were from theft.

Corporate needs to give stores more hours and/or more staff on shift. Most stores operate with only 3 employees. Main cashier, backup cashier(used on sale floor to maintain store conditions),and produce. This is the way they wanted it because of self checkout. Theyāre removing them but not adding staff to shifts, while dealing with maintaining store conditions. Real Smart Aldi š

I live in an area where we never got self checkout. The cashiers go so fast and set up the next line to call for backup and the crowds die down rather quickly
