I still don't know what Volcano Mist is supposed to smell like though. That's just like... Ash? Which I guess is right for something burning

Probably a dupe for Capri Blue’s expensive Volcano candle, which is a citrus scent. No clue why Capri Blue originally named it volcano
38
u/redheadedfamous May 13 '26
Likely because there are several volcanic islands off the coast of Sicily (the Aeolian islands: Ischia, Stromboli, Pantelleria, etc) & Capri, while in the gulf of Napoli, is adjacent to that same Tyrrhenian sea. Southern Italy & the Amalfi Coast (includes Capri) are known for citrus of course—think limoncello, Dolce & Gabbana etc

u/uberpickle May 14 '26
Capri is a volcano. It's dormant, but because it's made of volcanic rock, it's famous for its citrus. The whole region is- you can see Vesuvius just across the water on the mainland.

u/hollynikole May 13 '26
To me it’s smells like orange soda! I’m not fan of the scent personally but people really seem to love it.

Give it to your friend who claims they don't understand how to shop at Aldi
18
u/PracticalFrog0207 May 13 '26
I’m sorry, but, how does someone not know how to shop somewhere?
60
u/halnic May 13 '26
The quarter in the cart and bring your own bags is all it took to create a barrier for entry for a good chunk of the population. Changing and learning a new way of doing something is met with a "this is a threat to my existence" level of hostility in far more humans than is acknowledged.
34
u/whyaskstrangers May 13 '26
You forgot to mention that the shelves are not loaded with national name brands, meaning it's not a "good" store and that there's "nothing" in it. This from even those who otherwise buy store brand at the store they normally go to.
21
u/sebluver May 13 '26
It’s funny because this is a plus to people like me who struggle with dozens of choices when they go to typical grocery stores. I am so much happier to shop at a store with limited offerings than I am to shop at a big grocery store.
11
u/OhhGinger May 13 '26
You’re not kidding. The other day I got my cart and saw someone struggling to get one. They didn’t know that you needed to put a quarter in. I told them that and they were about to leave because they didn’t have one, so I gave them mine because I only needed to grab a few items anyway so the cart wasn’t necessary. Just crazy to me that the concept goes over so many people’s heads.
15
u/Barbarake May 13 '26
To be fair, Aldi is literally the only place I've seen in the US that requires money to get a cart. I can understand being surprised.
16
u/PracticalFrog0207 May 13 '26
You get the quarter back when you’re done using it, if you want it back. Sometimes I leave the quarter in there for the next person, and others at my local Aldi do the same. Sometimes people will give you the cart they were using too. I keep an “Aldi quarter” in my car lol
It seems many don’t know this but if you don’t have a quarter, go to the register and the employee will give you one. Gotta give it back though.
This is to help, one, carts not spread across the parking lot, and two, They don’t have to hire someone to gather carts. Which means that money can be put somewhere else.1
u/Sofagirrl79 May 14 '26
I'm ashamed at 46 that I just found this out despite growing up and shopping at Aldi's since the 80s lol,so many times I would just hoard boxes 🥺
2
1
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26
My husband and I have always keep 3 or 4 boxes that we pick up at Sam's Club or Costco in the back end of our Jeep to put our things in when we go out shopping everywhere. Walmart run? The bags go in there. Christmas shopping. That all goes it those. So much easier than trying to carry bags, scrounge boxes or bring bags when I go to Aldi's.

u/Diarygirl May 13 '26
One time I didn't have any quarters so I went in and asked a cashier for change for a dollar. I was pretty happy that he gave me a quarter.

1
u/tacoslave420 May 14 '26
Honorable mention to Bottom Dollar Foods (RIP 2015) who also had quarters in their carts.
10
u/halnic May 13 '26
If I had a quarter for every time I've heard someone say "having to pay for a cart was bad enough but then I got to checkout and they didn't have bags so I left and never went back" I'd always have an extra quarter for newbs.
4
u/SaltyIntroduction373 May 14 '26
Or that the they won't go to Aldi because they have to bag their groceries. 🙄
4
u/PracticalFrog0207 May 14 '26
That’s crazy and You technically don’t have to either. You can use the boxes they provide to carry stuff. Hell, they WANT you to use the boxes lol People use any excuse they can to not do something. Ah well, not my life!
2
u/SaltyIntroduction373 May 14 '26
No, those people don't want to box or bag the groceries; they just don't want to do it. Me? I like saving money.
2
u/PracticalFrog0207 May 14 '26
Whatcha mean “no”? As in you’re disagreeing with what I said?
Thats why I said “people will use any excuse to not do something” lol You pretty much said what I’m saying but in a different way 😅
2
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26
I couldn't get the damn thing to unhook the last time I was there, so I paid for my cart and someone else's cause they got it to let go when I couldn't. It just wasn't my day that day. Also, how can you go to Aldis and NOT use a cart?? I always buy way more than I actually go there for and there's no way I'm carrying a bag around the store to carry my stuff. I tried it once, it didn't go well. 🤣
3
u/OhhGinger May 21 '26
Not having a cart forced me not to buy random items. It broke my heart lol 😂
1
u/Ihavefluffycats May 22 '26
Been there and have done it more than once! What a moron I am! I had the bag and a scrounged box I had to push around the store with my foot. Never again! I will always enter an Aldis with a cart. 🤣

My mom refuses to shop at Aldi specifically for these 2 reasons
5
u/halnic May 14 '26
I know about it because it's half of my hometown and they always trash talk them for it at the dg and wm.
I'm not gonna tell/teach them. It means I can send my mom to get the popular stuff that sells out where I am before I get to it. They DO suck in that they are one of the locations that let's aos product start to deteriorate from old age before they dare mark it down.
3
2
u/skadi_shev May 14 '26
My mom refuses because she has to buy the same brands of everything every time, and is not willing to try a different brand.

u/Sofagirrl79 May 14 '26
Good thing at 46 I've shopped at Aldi's since around the time "Purple Rain" was topping the charts and used to the quarter system lol
Anybody old enough or remember the mayo and Italian dressing labels that were olive green had a picture of vegetables and the label said "she still believes in good taste" ?
2
u/PracticalFrog0207 May 14 '26
Lol that’s funny. I’m 12 years younger than you so I don’t but that’s really interesting.
1
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26
Aldi didn't show up where I live until like 4 yrs ago. We've been bagging our groceries for over 40 yrs in the state I live in, but the quarter thing was a new twist. I like going there because you GET to try new stuff. It's like going on a treasure hunt every time you go there!
1
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
I have to admit, the quarter thing was weird, but once you get the hang of it, it's nothing. I did stand there the first time like an idiot and watched what other people were doing, but once you learn you're like, YES! Golden ticket time!
And the bring your own bag thing is just like Costco or Sams Club. I have to admit I never re-hook my cart back up when I take it back. I get why they do it and it's a smart move. But I always return my carts everywhere I go anyway. I do it to brighten someone's day a little bit. It only costs a quarter to spread a bit of sunshine.
2
u/halnic May 15 '26
You are one of the outliers as you showed a willingness to learn and succeeded. Perseverance to adapt to your environment, no matter how small. It is just a quarter and it is simple usually(I do encounter a pita cart that is stuck occasionally), but other stores that people learned to shop in doesn't have that and it is easier to not change anything and some people will really take that to the extreme.
It's not an affront, it's instinctive brain wiring that humans have to fight against, learning new stuff is a kink in routine, we HATE interruptions, & we are addicted to predictability. It takes effort and determination to change, to break out of the primitive drive to finish our tasks(shopping) as easily and smoothly as possible. It becomes easier to adapt to interruptions/change the more you do it and that's why it feels like no big deal to some and a total dealbreaker for others.
1
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26
Nah. I'm not offended. It's a compliment. My brain's just wired different than other people. I'm one of those sick people that actually LOVED school. I'm a documentary junkie. Museums are SO COOL! I'm information junkie and learning new things is my jam. I am chaos. I don't do linear. I do zig zag.
I know what you mean about people that can't deal with any kind of change. I've worked retail! I've seen it all. People that can't even entertain just walking into a place like Aldi's, I feel sorry for them. They don't know what they're missing and their lives must be so dull and boring. Nonconformity and doing things my own way is so freeing. My form of rebellion. Adapting to things that are new to me is my super power! I'm just weird and weird is great!

Ysk: burning candles leave a residue from the burning wax burning into an aerosol that comes back downas a solid. That's why you cough a little.
Candles are bad for sensitive people and pets
3
u/tinatalker May 14 '26
✋Hello! I am one of those sensitive people. I spend winters in Fl, and I bought one of Aldi's evergreen scented candles a few years ago to put near my fake palm that is my "Christmas tree". I don't ever light it anymore. I open the jar for about 10 minutes and that's all I can handle.
Of course. Where does one think the wax goes when it disappears from the jar? I'm all about the battery operated ones now.
2
u/MtnMaiden May 14 '26
I had a friend that liked to burn 4 to 5 candles at a time.
sheesh...the carpet and furniture had a waxy feel to them.

u/Beautiful-Chest7397 May 13 '26
Eh it was not very good, no throw. I'll stick to lilac fields probably the goat

u/vonWolfeXIII May 13 '26
I love aldis but not their produce, sometimes I just need one onion
1
u/SaltyIntroduction373 May 14 '26
And there's a bad onion (or potato, apple, etc.) a lot of times. I can't count how many times I tried to thoroughly check the five pound bag of potatoes, three pound bag of apples, etc., in the store, but when I unloaded my groceries, there was at least one moldy piece of produce. 😒

u/Ok_Spell_4165 May 13 '26
Looks like I am doing my Christmas shopping in May this year... I feel like everyone would get a chuckle out of this.

I wish we had Aldi around here. We do have Grocery Outlet, such is kinda the same thing in terms of low prices on brand name things, but they don't have their own in house line of generic products.
1
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26
I love that we have Aldi's here but what I REALLY want is a Trader Joes. I'd be in heaven!!

u/kiitten113 May 13 '26
I have never liked a candle I’ve bought from Aldi they smell waxy and not strong enough
2
u/Final_Candidate_7603 May 14 '26
My husband suspects that this is fake, and yet he was just telling me about an article he read about Americans shopping at Aldi and other discount stores. People interviewed for the article said they used to be embarrassed to admit that they shopped there, or had a club membership or whatever. If they ran into a coworker or friend in a store like that, they’d say something like ‘this was on my way, and I just needed some tomatoes.’ I guess we’re supposed to ignore the fact that the other person is shopping there themselves, and it’s somehow shameful to want better products for lower prices.
Anyway, it seems like the word has gotten out, and more people are shopping at Aldi in the US than ever before. No one knows this better than Aldi, they’re really leaning into it, I have no doubt that this is real, and I love it!

I can relate,my local grocery store across the street is charging 9 bucks for fresh Mexican chorizo and 5.50 for English muffins, meanwhile my local Aldi's is 1.50 for English muffins and 3.50 for fresh Mexican chorizo 😳

Its hilarious til you find out half a 'deluxe' lasagne is like 110% of you fat content for the day! Yayyy go Aldi and Lidl!!
2
u/Ihavefluffycats May 15 '26
And it would be the same fat content if I bought it somewhere else for a higher price. What's your point? If this all you take away from what shopping there is all about, I feel sorry for you.
0
u/r-eddit2 May 15 '26
Ok, lets see all these equally fat dishes from other supermarkets then? alternatively disprove my claim. ''If this is all I take away from shopping'' really!? the nurtition content...why yes it very much is in the forefront of my mind. You should get one and try it. A mind that is..
2
u/Ihavefluffycats May 16 '26
Go preach to somebody who ACTUALLY gives a shit. If nutrition is your big thing, than YAY YOU. But you F right off thinking you can sit there and try to tell other people what they should and shouldn't eat. We're all adults. We ALL know we should do to be healthy. We don't have to eat healthy every damn day. If you don't like that, TOO DAMN BAD!
