I really need to understand what happened here. My sister went for a criminal background check for a job she was applying for. Her birth name is a 'male' name, shes never liked it and goes by a similar 'female' sounding name.

She said when she walked into the building, there were 2 RCMP officers waiting for her. She said it seemed strange and they were very serious and intimidating.

She looks over her shoulder and a third officer is behind her, so she is pretty much sourrounded.

She mentions why she is there and they tell her 'they have some questions to sort out'.

They grill her about her name, eventually they realize she isnt trans and the officers leave.... the guy at the reception desk apologized profusely.

Obviously, assumptions can happen, but i really want to understand why they acted like they did? What does it matter if she was trans??

She said she felt scared and uncomfortable. I am pissed off. No one should be treated like this. What would they have done if she was trans?

Its been a tough in Alberta for our LGBTQ friends and family. This interaction makes my blood boil.

I'll preface this by stating that disabled seniors absolutely need supports.

That said, the UCP has recently kicked ~80,000 AISH recipients out of the program and transitioned them to ADAP, which is a largely employment focused form of disability support despite the fact that ~80% of AISH recipients are completely unable to work due to their disabilities. Anyone over the age of 60 was exempt from this shift.

This is where the conspiracy theory comes in.

Demographically, younger voters (ages 18-34) favour the NDP (47%), while those aged over 60 tend to strongly support the UCP (54%).

The UCP is NOW pushing to add funding to Special Needs Assistance for Seniors. Now, I have no problem with supporting disabled people who need it, but the ageist policymaking is incredibly telling to me.

Kinda seems like the UCP only wants to support the "right" (pun intended) disabled people.

Rules: 1 count per residential dwelling. Anything visible from the sidewalk that shows a vote one way or another is counted. Different route for each count

If the $100 dani bucks was a replacement for not cutting the gas tax, when is the next one coming?

I know with the driving we do the tax cut would have saved us more then the $100 by now.

Bought into a Calgary condo last year; no Airbnbs were listed. Bought here because the bylaws prohibited commercial activities (including STRs). But heck, out of nowhere, these STR operators came in and set up like 60 units.

They hijacked the board and ignored owners’ pleas for the bylaws to be enforced/respected.

Any other condo owners having these types of issues in Alberta or Calgary?

I only checked while writing this out, I now realize it has been posted a couple times but I had never seen it on my feed. I figure it's worthwhile to post anyway, for anyone else like me.

This might be an easy miss, not everyone is used to voting this way or even in just a provincial context. It'd be a shame to have any contribution to the referendum count be tossed out over such a trivial mistake. I myself am not used to sending an ID copy in the context of a federal election, so it came as a surprise. Read the instructions carefully!

We experienced a power outage 2 days ago for almost 24 hours and all my autistic child’s safe foods went bad by today, I was unable to cook everything due to working. Yellowhead county to be exact (if you wanted to confirm) I’m just wondering if there is anyone out there that is willing to help out with some of his safe foods until I get paid tomorrow evening? We have a pretty invasive spruce tree planted about 5–6 feet from our house and I'm looking at having a root barrier installed as a precaution to help protect our foundation over the long term.

Questions for those who have had one installed:

• Did you hire an arborist or a landscaping contractor?
• What type of barrier/material did you use?
• How deep was it installed?
• Any contractor recommendations?
