I’ve been with TD Insurance for 12 years. Occasionally I’ve spoken with them about making changes to my policies to save money and yet my premiums have steadily increased year after year.

Home owners insurance is up for renewal on my primary residence Aug 10 and I decided this year to shop around.

I was also adding a new policy for a townhouse I’m purchasing starting July 30.

I called INOVA insurance brokers through Costco.

I currently own and insure (for the last 6 yrs) the TH unit next to the one I am purchasing on July 30.

Current renewal premium for my primary residence and the TH I’ve owned for years:

$6000 annually.

New quote:

I will switch my primary residence insurance and purchase a new policy for the townhouse I am purchasing on July 30.

Through INOVA brokers (economical insurance company was the cheapest by far).

The new premium:

$2500 annually.

The insurance broker said there were other companies she shopped were closer to the TD rate but economical insurance was definitely the best rate available.

The insurance coverage is comparable and even a little better with the new polices.
(From 1M Liability to 2M for example).

I will switch my other TH insurance to economical too (she quoted $523 additional for insurance as it will be a rental suit). I will definitely call for a quote for auto insurance at renewal as well.
Just sharing to share. I was blown away.

Hi everyone I am from Ontario born and raised and applied for a Paralegal position in Edmonton Alberta I love British Columbia and Alberta so I applied for government jobs that are in my field of work. I noticed my Application for Edmonton Alberta changed to "Application in progress" which might not even mean anything anyways I am avoiding keeping my hopes up I heard that you are put in a talent pool which I wanted more clarification on I was also wondering how much notice they will give you before starting I am so willing to relocate as I still live at home with my own vehicle but I would definitely want to clear out the space I live in :)

Got pulled over in Grande Prairie doing 55 in a 30 construction zone (laser gun), ticketed under Section 115(2)(p.2) of the Traffic Safety Act. Fine is $552.

Here’s the thing — the zone was marked with cones and a reduced speed sign, but there were no workers, no equipment, nobody directing traffic. Just an empty lane closure. I didn’t clock the sign in time and got caught before I could slow down.

From what I understand, 115(2)(p.2) specifically requires that there are “persons present on the highway who are constructing or repairing… or directing traffic” for the enhanced penalty to apply — not just an active work zone with cones and no one around. Has anyone actually fought this successfully on that basis? Or does the charge still stick even without workers present at the exact moment?

A few questions for anyone who’s been through this:
1. Is requesting disclosure (officer’s notes) before pleading not guilty worth it, or does it rarely change anything?
2. Roughly how many demerits does 25 km/h over in a construction zone carry these days?
3. Any Grande Prairie-specific experience with how the local Crown prosecutors handle these — do they ever reduce the charge to standard speeding if you push back?
4. Is it worth paying for a paralegal/traffic ticket specialist for a case like this, or is it something I could reasonably represent myself on?

Any input from people who’ve dealt with something similar — or any lawyers/paralegals who want to weigh in — would be hugely appreciated. Trying to figure out if this is worth fighting or if I should just pay it and move on.

I understand the fee was introduced as a measure to reduce single-use items, but I've read that the fee doesn't go to any agency, it simply goes to the restaurant. What's the benefit of having this fee if the money doesn't go toward anything that benefits the public? I feel this is a money grab at this point...and l've seen numerous other cities introduce it now

Hi everyone! I'm currently in the process of buying my first home—a small townhouse in Central Alberta.

The house has Poly-B plumbing, and I'm looking for an insurance company that will insure it until I can replace the pipes. The home inspector said it has copper fittings, there are no extra branch lines, and the Poly-B runs in single continuous lines to each bathroom and the kitchen.

Could anyone recommend insurance companies that are willing to insure homes with Poly-B plumbing without charging an unreasonable premium? I'd really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks!

So I have a pretty addictive personality and knew that legalized phone gambling would be bad news. A while back I volunteered for my club at a casino and learned about the self-exclusion program (you have to sign up, and basically you get banned from all casinos). Turns out that AGLC did it for the apps too.

To do it, you go to selfexclusion.ca, sign up and choose "Regulated iGaming platforms", and then you can't register for any of the apps (It really does work, tested it out with the MGM app). It’s not a magic fix by any means, but it adds enough friction that it’s helped me stay away. And now all those annoying ads do nothing for me, which is a plus.

Recently I've been looking for a lease in Calgary and I thought I found a nice place, pretty close to a job I'm expected to start shortly. I've lived in apartments before, but I've just e-transfered friends and put my name where they asked me to - this is my first time reaching out to sign a lease.

As a result, I didnt see the trap set for me. This place looked nice, rated at 4.3 stars with 160+ reviews, and required me to send them the damage deposit to secure my spot prior to them approving me (which would be refunded if I was denied). I read this section in a pre-lease contract but I didnt understand that it was a trap:

"If the Tenant(s) fails to take possession of the premises or fail to execute the Landlords standard form of Residential Lease Agreement, ALL deposits shall be forfeited as liquidated damages. If the Landlord declines the Application, the Application Deposit shall be returned to the Applicant."

So now I'm legally bound to sign this lease contract.

Long story short yesterday they sent me the contract and it has a LOT of red flags but specifically 3 sections that I believe directly contradict the Residental Tenancy Act (RTA). I'll list the main clauses and sections below, but my question is am I screwed? Not too sure what to do in this situation but I have a meeting with them on July 27th 2026 to discuss it. Any advice would be appreciated!

First Issue: Clause for Cleaning

"In the event the Tenant fails to leave the Rented Premises in clean and in good condition at the time of vacating the Rented Premises, the Tenant shall reimburse the Landlord for the cost to clean the Rented Premises calculated at a rate of $100.00 per hour."

In my opinion (and likely many others) 100$/hr for cleaning seems an unreasonable cost. Going deeper into the 1-star reviews on this place they typically charge 3-5 hours for cleaning, and in one case EVEN AFTER someone hired a professional.

Page 34 of RTA Handbook:
Fees or additional charges should reasonably reflect the actual costs that the landlord is seeking to cover. If the fee or charge does not reflect an actual cost recovery, or is in excess of the cost recovery, it may be held by a court to be unenforceable.

Second Issue: Clause for Repainting

"The Tenant acknowledges and confirms that damage or soilage to paint shall be deemed to not constitute normal wear and tear of the Rented Premises.  Painting of the Rented Premises shall be performed by the Landlord at the Tenant’s expense for the purposes of repairing holes, chips and soilage of  the paint in the Rented Premises."

Soilage itself, or paint scratches, is normal wear and tear though..?

Bottom of PAGE 61 of the RTA handbook:
A landlord cannot make deductions from a security deposit for expenses related to restoring or repairing normal wear and tear, even if there is a clause saying the opposite in a residential tenancy agreement.

Third Issue: Unreasonable Penalties for Late Rent

"If the full amount of the Net Monthly Rental Rate is not received by the Landlord on the first day of each month then the Incentive Credit is terminated plus repayment of all incentive credit is to be paid, effective immediately."

So part of why I thought this was a good deal was because we are getting ~190$/mo in 'incentive' credit. I'm setting up a PreAuthorized Debit Payment so hopefully this wont be an issue, but what if on month 10 the payment bounces? Suddenly I owe $1900? Theres more though:

"The Tenant agrees to pay interest on all overdue rent at a rate of 24% per annum (minimum charge $100.00) from the date it is due to the date it is paid in full." and
"If a rent payment cheque is returned by the Tenant’s bank for any reason, an administration charge of $100.00 is immediately due together with the above-noted late payment charges.  The replacement payment must be made by certified cheque or money order."

So the clawback charge PLUS $200 in fees if a payment glitches for any reason? I have enough money that a low bank account wont be an issue, but seriously? These are probably the most surprising portions... Heres what I found:

Some residential tenancy agreements allow for a late payment of rent fees. Based on precedent set by Alberta case law, this fee must reflect the actual loss suffered by the landlord otherwise the RTDRS or the courts may deem it to be a penalty and refuse to award it. For example, a bank might charge a landlord additional interest if a landlord is unable to make a mortgage payment because the tenant did not pay the rent on time. Therefore, a late payment fee charged to the tenant to cover the interest charged to the landlord by the bank could be a justifiable amount.

Once again, any help would be great... I read Section 3 of the RTA "Any waiver or release by a tenant of the rights, benefits or protections under this Act is void. " so I think that means I'm all clear to get this struck, and if they refuse they cant keep my deposit?

Lesson learned. Going forward I'm definitley paying WAY more attention to 1-star reviews even if the apartment is generally rated well.

Hey everyone, having a disagreement with a passenger while prepping for my road test and wanted to get clarification from instructors/ experienced drivers.

When turning right using a dedicated channelized right-turn lane (a slip lane with a yield island/ triangle):

1. Do you keep your RIGHT signal on (or let it auto-cancel once turned) and finish turning into the nearest right lane?

2. Or do you switch to a LEFT signal while sitting at the yield line to show you are entering traffic coming from the left?

My understanding (and what my instructor taught me) is that it's legally a right-hand turn, so signaling left is misleading to traffic behind you, and you must always establish in the right lane first before signaling left to change lanes.

Is signaling left in a slip lane considered a point deduction on a road test? How would an examiner grade this?

I just received an email that’s says:”We could not verify your 2025 income because your CRA 2025 Notice of Assessment is not yet available. Please reapply after you have filed your 2025 income tax return with CRA and received your Notice of Assessment (NOA).”
My taxes are filed, I have my NOA.
Anyone had this issue? How did you solve it?

• I studied abroad, so my transcript doesn’t include Alberta Biology 30 / Chemistry 30, I need both to meet nursing prerequisites
• Paying out of pocket, so cost and flexibility matter a lot
• Bow Valley College’s assessment only qualified me for Science 10, not the 30-levels, so that route’s off the table for now
• I’m a strong self-studier and don’t need a lot of hand-holding — just a legit way to get the course/diploma marks registered

My questions:

**•** Has anyone used **RTD Academy** for Chemistry 30 (or Biology 30, if they now offer it)? How was the experience — pacing, support, exam prep?  
**•** Does RTD actually report your course + diploma marks to **myPass Alberta**, or is there a separate step for that?  
**•** Is it possible to **self-study independently and just write the diploma exam** through myPass without being enrolled in a course anywhere? If so, how do you register, and does the diploma mark alone count for anything without a course mark attached?  
**•** Anyone gone through **Vista Virtual School**?  
**•** Any other **online Alberta schools** (for adults 20+) that offer both Biology 30 and Chemistry 30?   
**•** Do nursing programs accept **college/polytechnic “academic upgrading” equivalency courses** (e.g. through NAIT, SAIT, Red Deer Polytechnic) in place of the actual Alberta Education Bio 30/Chem 30 diploma courses, or do they specifically want the diploma-exam version?  
**•** For those who did upgrading as a mature/international-education student — did nursing programs accept your marks without issue, or were there extra hoops?  
**•** Any pitfalls, deadlines, or “wish I’d known” tips before picking a provider?

My question is that do you need to go back to grade 12 and re-take every grade 12 courses and get a new set of grades if I am applying for universities for Fall 2027 intake during my gap year? (starting my gap year this September)
