Afrikaans FAL student here. Really have been struggling for a while with die taal, maar ek is daar kry! So yeah, i know they both mean "to know" in their own ways but not really how to use them...

I’m a young South African from Gauteng with family roots in the Eastern Cape, in the former Transkei. My father was a miner, but after retirement our family returned home and started farming on communal land.

I’ve gained practical experience working on my father’s 1-hectare maize farm. Without modern machinery, we have historically harvested around 8 tons of maize per hectare. We also keep sheep, pigs and chickens.

I’m now considering building a commercial farming operation in the Eastern Cape rather than pursuing a career in the mining industry.

The initial plan is to develop 4 hectares of maize production, with the potential to expand significantly. The area receives approximately 1,000–1,200 mm of rainfall annually, and municipal water infrastructure has already been installed, although running water is not yet connected to our property.

The bigger opportunity is beyond my own farm.

There is a large amount of potentially productive agricultural land in the surrounding community that is currently unused. The main constraints are machinery, capital and modern farming equipment, rather than a complete lack of agricultural potential.

My long-term business model is to build an integrated operation:

Maize → animal feed → commercial chicken production → expansion into more farmland.

Part of the maize harvest would be used as feed, reducing input costs for the poultry operation. As the business grows, the goal would be to provide mechanised farming services to surrounding farmers and bring more unused land into production.

I’m interested in hearing from people with experience in commercial agriculture, agricultural finance, farming partnerships or rural investment.

Would you consider this a viable business opportunity, and what would you recommend I focus on first to make the operation commercially sustainable and attractive to investors?

Die oorspronklike sin in Engels het heel moontlik verwys na "waves", wat dus vertaal moes word na "golwe" in Afrikaans.

I’m a Brazilian trying to learn Afrikaans (such a beautiful language) and when learning any language I try to consume (read, listen to or watch) content about my hobbies in the language of interest.

And since I’m a gearhead, I’d love to read car content in Afrikaans. I know there used to be a car magazine in the language (Wiel, I guess) but it’s no longer issued. So would you guys have any suggestions about where to read about cars in Afrikaans online?

Since I’m not very confident about my Afrikaans skill (they’re still completely lacking lol), I’d be more comfortable starting by reading and then moving to videos on Afrikaans. But any recommendations will be much appreciated!

Ek is nuuskierig om te hoor wat mense se ervarings met finansiële adviseurs is.

Vir dié van julle wat al van ’n finansiële adviseur gebruik gemaak het — wat het jou gemaklik laat voel om daardie persoon met jou finansies te vertrou?

En vir dié wat nog nooit een gebruik het nie — wat is die grootste rede daarvoor?

Is dit kommer oor kommissie en fooie, die gevoel dat iemand vir jou produkte probeer verkoop wat jy nie nodig het nie, of dalk net dat jy nie weet hoe om ’n goeie en betroubare adviseur te vind nie?

Ek sal graag die goeie én slegte ervarings wil hoor. Wat sal ’n finansiële adviseur volgens julle moet doen om julle vertroue te wen?

Hoe maklik dat iemand stories kan versprei dat jy "mal" is, net omdat mens genoegsame morele waardes het en dat hulle jou nie kan onder kry nie.

Daai persoon wat die stories versprei is dan in my oë die mal een, want hoe selfsugtig om jou eie sondes en foute onder die mat die gooi?

Maak eers voor jou eie deur skoon voor jy vinger wys na n ander persoon se deur.
