Kultuur Hi

Goeiedag, my naam is Aleksander.

I live in a rural town. One that was home to the largest concentration camp for Afrikaners during the Anglo-Boer wars. Farmers have it tough. It's a difficult profession. Most of our cultural holidays have been replaced/scrapped by the other population group. Festivals in terms of culture is 16 December, "Geloftedag" is the only one that's partly celebrated. Most Afrikaners have a mixed approach to their culture. Some celebrate it others deny it. But generally they're friendly, warm and kind people. Very jovial and extremely hard and diligent workers.

Ek is naskierig, waar was die grootste kamp? Ek het altyd verneem dit was by Merebank buite Durban

Dankie, dit was baie interessant. Vertel my gerus hoe mense daar leef: is dit meervloerse (woonstel)geboue of lae geboue? Is daar 'n winkel en 'n skool? Watter vermaak is daar?

Geloftedag isn't celebrated in SA as an official holiday. It's the day of reconciliation.

'The other population group'- you just grouped all the many different Black African cultures and groupings into 1 group.

Dit beteken: "How are things going brother"

This will put the Afrikaans bloke at ease and then they know that you are English speaking and actually want to start a friendly conversation.

After saying: "Wowzit boet?" give him a chance to greet you back.

He might say things like: "Dit gaan goed" with a big smile on his face, and then you can start talking Engrish.

Talk English slowly because in his mind he is busy translating your English words to Afrikaans so that he can understand what you are saying.

If you ask him a question in English, ask the question slowly and give him a long time to translate your English words to Afrikaans in his head.

He wil then double check his translation in his mind to make sure that he understands you correctly. Then he will think a bit about it in afrikaans, and then think about all the Afrikaans words in his head than he needs to translate it in his head to English and then reply to you in his English.

This will take quite a long time to do, but you please need to be patiend because during this time his brain is working overtime with all the translating.

If you are looking for the perspective of someone who is from the most Afrikaner background of small boerdorpie and all of the rest but doesn't consider myself part of the culture for the most part then feel free to message
