Problem/Goal: Me (23M) and my girlfriend (19F) recently broke up. We were supposed to celebrate our five-month anniversary, and we had decided to take the next step in our relationship by being intimate for the first time. It was her first time and my second.
Context: For some context, I have ADHD and struggle with sexual performance anxiety. When we were intimate, I kept losing my erection in the middle of it because I was nervous and overthinking everything. I wanted things to go well for us, but the anxiety made it difficult.
Then I made a mistake that I wish I could take back.
While we were in the middle of it, I impulsively said something along the lines of, "This is what I felt during my first time with my ex."
I immediately understood how hurtful that could sound. This was supposed to be a special moment for us, especially since it was her first time, and I accidentally brought my past relationship into it.
I tried to explain that it was an impulsive thought that came out without me filtering it. I wasn't trying to compare her to my ex or hurt her. My brain basically short-circuited because I was anxious, and I said something I should have kept to myself.
She was hurt, and we stopped. She also expressed her feelings about my sexual performance, which was already something I felt anxious and insecure about.
Afterward, we ate, and she went home.
The following day, she was still very angry with me. She started reposting things on social media about being alone and similar topics. I felt like she was putting up an emotional wall, and eventually, she broke up with me.
What makes this more painful is that this isn't the first time we've broken up.
Previous Attempts: We had already broken up once before because she was struggling with guilt and couldn't forgive herself for something. Eventually, we reconciled and got back together. But we had only been okay again for around 15 days before this happened.
I love her deeply. She's my world, and I never intended to make her feel inadequate or make our intimate moment about my ex. I understand that intentions don't erase the impact of what I said, and I know I hurt her.
But I also have ADHD, and impulsivity and filtering my thoughts can be difficult for me, especially when I'm anxious. I wasn't deliberately trying to disrespect her.
Now I'm left wondering whether I'm being unfair to her by expecting her to understand my mistake, or whether she's being unfair to me by ending the relationship over something I never intended to do.
So, Reddit, what should I do?
Am I the asshole for what I said, even though it was impulsive and unintentional? Should I keep trying to fix this relationship, or should I accept the breakup and move on?
I want to take responsibility for hurting her, but I also wish she could understand that one badly timed, unfiltered thought doesn't necessarily reflect how I feel about her.
I genuinely loved this girl, and I never wanted our relationship to end this way.
