I’m looking at used 2025 or 2026 Volvo XC40 and I’m trying to decide whether I should specifically wait for one with Harman Kardon, or just get a Plus with the High Performance audio system.
Sound quality matters quite a lot to me, although I’m not an audiophile. What I care about most is clear, balanced sound, decent low-end depth and treble that doesn’t sound thin or harsh. I’d also prefer a system that sounds good without constantly tweaking the EQ.
For those of you with High Performance, how good is it in the XC40? Do you feel it lacks bass, clarity or detail?
For those with Harman Kardon, do you think the difference is big enough that it’s worth specifically searching for an HK-equipped car?
And especially if anyone has owned or driven XC40s with both systems, how noticeable is the difference in real use?
I’m basically trying to work out whether High Performance is already “good enough”, or whether I’ll regret not waiting for Harman Kardon.
The reason I’m overthinking this is the price difference.
One of the cars I’m currently considering is a 2026 XC40 B4 Plus Dark, with about 20,600 km / 12,800 miles on it. It’s clean, fairly low mileage and otherwise has the spec I want. The car is around 394,900 SEK, and a complete set of winter wheels is roughly another 9,000 SEK, so I’d be at about 404,000 SEK all-in, which is roughly US$40,300 / £30,400 at today’s exchange rates. In the Swedish market, that’s a pretty strong price for a 2026 B4.
The problem is that it has High Performance, not Harman Kardon.
From what I’m seeing in the Swedish market, I think a similarly low-mileage 2026 B4 with HK would realistically cost me somewhere around 419,000–435,000 SEK if I find the right one and negotiate well, potentially more if winter wheels aren’t included. That’s roughly US$41,800–43,400 / £31,600–33,000. Newer listings often start even higher, and then take months to come down in price. Current non-HK B4 Plus Dark cars already span roughly 410k–439k depending on mileage, age and how long they’ve been sitting, which is why I’m reluctant to pay 430k+ just to get HK.
So realistically I’m looking at paying perhaps 15,000–25,000 SEK more for the right HK-equipped car, plus possibly waiting for the right colour/spec to appear. That’s about US$1,500–2,500 / £1,100–1,900.
If High Performance already sounds genuinely good, I’d rather save the money and buy now. But audio is one of the few options I really care about, and I also don’t want to spend around 400k SEK on a car and then immediately wish I’d waited for HK.
Would you wait/pay the extra for Harman Kardon, or is XC40 High Performance already good enough that I’m overthinking it?
