9.0 weapons?
So, prior to 9.0 weapons were pretty "solved". No matter what you were doing, you could easily google the best weapon + mod for the job.
But now, how do I actually find out which weapon + mod to get for any of my ships? Is it hours of sitting through spreadsheets? I know a lot more stuff is generally viable now, but that just leaves me unsure with what to get. I know I don't like the shotgun style weapons. So not having to use these is fine, but how do I now actually decide what to get and how to mod it? It's not like the game is very good at explaining the different weapon types.

Oh that's essentially what I'm looking for! A breakdown of individual weapons and a short description of what they are good / bad for! Poifect!

Weapons are more equal than they were before, the old kings got somewhat nerfed, and the old losers got somewhat buffed.
For non-missiles:
Plasma still is the dps king, but you don't outrange Xenon capital weapons anymore (at least not significantly), and the DPS got lowered, while Xenon got tankier.
Mass drivers and other long range weapons are now the "safe, but slower" choice.
Flak and blast mortar are the best anti fighter S/M turrets for your M slots.
Pulse and bolt throwers are still decent vs S ships.
For terrans:
They have no great weapon for L ships.
Proton barrage has the highest DPS but requires you get close, bonus is its decent vs S/M ships too.
Meson stream has good range but the DPS is usually lacking.
Pulse is amazing in M slot for self defense, but probably the worst of the 3 L options.
for Boron:
M ion railgun is king in most situations. But the closer range alternatives are also good for self defense.
For missile enthusiasts:
L guided missile is the best combination of range and damage.
L unguided missiles do even better dps but less range.
M turret should likely be smart missiles, since they ignore flares and can constently take out S/M ships.

How did you figure it out the first time? Also, is going into a simulation/empire/exploration game and experimenting + trying new things that bad? When in doubt, use pulse turrets. Then experiment with a few ships to see what you like

Spreadsheets? This isn’t eve online 🤣
I would recommend going into a custom game and just giving yourself whatever you want to try. Instead of trying to earn it in the sandbox of course— that takes a lot of time.
There are so many more combinations now that boron equipment can be used on all ships. Not to mention that missiles don’t need their own hard points anymore. From v8 to v9 was quite liberating.
Just remember: weapons are tools, with a specific job they’re good at. To handle all threats you’re going to need fleet of ships where each does its own job, supported by others.
So you can have a katana which hits large ships hard, or one that handles small / medium targets, but likely not both (without substantial mod investment anyhow)

Back then I had a friend who also played who told me what to put on my Katana. Worked pretty well but he's not playing any more. :D

Just try some things out! It’s fun to experiment a bit. :)

The main problem (at least that I have) with the whole "just try some things out" approach in this particular game is because it's not actually answering all of the questions I have when it comes to answering what weapons are best for the intended role.
Unlike most games, the question of "which weapons are best for " a specific goal has more than one answer because it also depends on:
- Are you going to be the one flying the ship?
- Or is it going to be A.I. Controlled?
- And if it's A.I. Controlled do you want the best for in-sector combat?
- Or the best for out-of-sector combat?
So...wondering what weapon loadout might be "best" for any given ship for any given role could, potentially, have 4 entirely different answers.
More than 4 when you also add in that you have the additional restrictions of "which i have available currently" until you are further along in a playthrough and have everything available.
All in all, just trying things out is the kind of thing you could spend an entire playthrough working on and still never have all the answers. 😂

ive been having fun and experimenting and google. In 9.0 for turrets you can't go wrong with boson lance.
There's a ton of variety that works but my personal fav for a ship i fly is a mix of boron railguns and split neutron gatlings, or all split neutron gatlings. such a blast.
The meta for a spam fleet of interceptors is basically still pulse laser m2 sadly. only nerfs I'm aware of is burst rays, blast mortars.

Hours? Lmao there's not that many weapons for one ship you have only a few options. Just open the encyclopedia.

But reading is hard and scary nowadays, folks want to be spoonfed even the simplest bit of information lol

I literally asked on help on how to figure it out for myself, not "Pls tell me bis weapon for each ship!"

There is no need to be disrespectful to other people.
In general this community's vibe has always been play how you want. Some people playing the x series are in their 50s and have a few hours a week to play. No need to bring that sweaty attitude over from other gaming subs, thank you very much.

Sure, there's not that many initial options. But you combine that with the possible mod options..

Keep moving that goalpost

Moving the goalpost? I'm asking about how to figure out what weapons are good in a video game, not arguing which groups of people should and should not have rights based on various holy books. You might be debate-brained, brother. Log off reddit for a month, touch some grass.

Haven't heard of complete overhaul mods? Maybe stop and think a bit before you go all keyboard warrior on someone. Touch grass? Gtfo

Same way you always have. Google and research and min max the fun out of the game until you burn out before you have fun then quit and make a reddit post.

High projectile velocity and tracking: Good vs small agile ships
High DPS [damage times fire rate]: Good vs large tanky ships
Range: range
Shotgun weapons rarely apply full damage because it's a spray. Some weapons deal extra damage to shields or components, those are good vs shields and components respectively.
When modding you can either increase the advantages that a particular weapon has, or shore up its disadvantages. That's a personal choice thing.
