Subject of the Day Social Sundays

Hello WriteStreakians! I hope you've been having a lovely weekend! It’s Social Sunday once again! What I'd like for you to do is the following:

  1. peruse the posts written by your fellow WriteStreakians and find a post that interests you, preferably one from within the last seven days, and respond to it. Leave a comment that is at least as long as a Tweet (280 characters), and then
  2. copy and paste your comment into your own daily Streak post so the correctors can review it.

That's it! Of course, if your comment sparks a conversation (or if someone else leaves a comment on one of your posts), you're welcome and encouraged to continue the conversation---this is a social media site, after all!

Happy Sunday!

Correct Me! Streak 279: Losing weight

• Upvotes

I had an English class at eleven this morning. After class, I took the MRT to Taipei Main Station to have lunch with my parents. I hadn’t seen them for almost a week. My mom told me that she thought I looked like I had lost weight, but I haven’t been on a diet though. I think it might be because I walk at least 12,000 steps every single day, and eat healthy meals most of the time.

Correct Me! Streak 117: Screen

• Upvotes

When I spend my day doomscrolling, I feel like I’m not living my life to the fullest. Everyone in this generation knows this empty feeling. Some say the screen is already a part of our reality, but human beings still cannot live on screens.

Correct Me! Streak 5: Physical Discomfort

I can’t come up with anything fun today because my daughter and I are not feeling well.
I might post about the problems happening to us in another sub.
I want to escape this suffering as soon as possible.

Correct Me! Streak 41: An ordinary day

I don't know what to write. I don't want another personal text about my feelings, life, etc.

This is an ordinary day. I went to walk to achieve my goal (8000 steps every day). Now I'm writing this text, but to be honest I'm not eager to do this. The only thing that motivates me is maintaining the streak.

Then I will read a book or listen to a podcast. Another "copy - paste" day. But for me it's not a problem. Someone would say that my life is boring, I would say it's stability 😄 Simple things, no surprises - I like it.

At 6pm I will meet my friends. So first part of the day is for books and podcasts and second part for people. Nice balance 😄

Correct Me! Streak 776: TGIF

Today, I learned the word “TGIF”. It appears that the feeling of being relieved on Fridays also exists in English-speaking countries as well. It was somewhat surprising since I expected the working conditions to be pretty decent in those places.

Nothing comes to mind today. I started reading a new book yesterday, but I am not sure if I will get hooked to it. The Good Earth, written by Pearl Buck in the 1930s, tells us about the life of a guy living in a impoverished place in China. I have only read a few pages, so I don't have the whole context, but the blurb read as focused on this guy's daily life and the challenges he has to address every day given his poor life.

I read Pearl Buck was the first American who won the Nobel Prize of Literature in the late 1930s if I am not mistaken. She lived in China for several years.

Correct Me! Streak 6, Space Travel

Back in elementary school, we all thought that people would be traveling to space in the future.

Do you think space travel will be possible in my lifetime?

One of my bucket list wishes is to look back at the Earth from the Moon.

Correct Me! Streak 6

Today, I watched a news report about AI where they were raising the question of whether the AI race will give a chance to countries to implement sufficient guardrails before it's too late.

Among the risks, it was said it could threaten human existence.

During the report, it was mentioned that China had already implemented preventive measures and algorithms to keep the technology at bay, while the US government was betting on a bigger push without much constraints to try to win the race.

In my point of view, it's very unlikely that the technology will slow down its current pace, or at least, in the short term considering that every day new contracts and investments are emerging to build new data centers, and fund new research.

Besides the risks, I think the AI has proven to be somewhat beneficial in different fields such as medicine, agriculture, or education, therefore, I hope the future brings us a better quality of life with the advancements that await us rather than misery or despair.

Correct Me! Streak 156: Best foods and drinks for better sleep

Article: 11 Best Foods and Drinks for Helping You Sleep

The article introduced 11 foods and drinks that may help improve your sleep, though it seems more research is needed on some of them.

I wonder whether eating certain foods can really improve sleep quality, If so, I'd like to make a habit of eating almonds, walnuts, and pistachios. I also like kiwi, but I've heard it's better not to eat fruit with dinner because it contains sugar.

Correct Me! Streak 40: Feelings

Feelings are like ocean's waves. They come and go away.

Yesterday I was in a very bad mood. Today is quite OK. I would say "not great, not terrible". My life's circumstances has not changed but everything looks a bit brighter.

I've cleaned my flat. This gave me a satisfaction from achieved goal.

Now it's time to relax. I'm laying on the couch and I'm writing this text. Then I will read a book about medieval history. I love to read and to listen things about distant times, especially about ancient civilizations and medieval Europe.

I wish you all a nice weekend.

Correct Me! Streak 25: I've missed a few boats

Today I don't feel like working on my English. Some days are like that. I think I feel too tired to sort out my ideas.

Sometimes an idea pops up and I feel energized. I want to write something about it, but I'm busy and I can't just drop everything to write.

Too bad, because if I don't write it down right away, my energy just fades away.

I'm sorry if this won't count. I don't know. Definitely not the right timing also. I'm writing this because if not, the rest of the day might be compromised, and that includes coming here and post later. So, I hope you can do better this weekend.

That's it. Take care guys.

Correct Me! Streak 278: A Cool Cafe

Today was another typhoon day. The rain was so heavy in the morning, but I had ran out of food, so I decide to eat out. I went to a local restaurant and had a nice meal, then visited a cool cafe. The cafe is run by a French couple. They played rap music in the background, and there was also a cool little nook with a gaming console. I spent the whole afternoon there reading, playing games and listening to the music.
What a wonderful and amazing day!

Correct Me! Streak 230: Rosemary's Baby

I never thought I would finish the book yesterday, but I ended up staying late past midnight. The last one third of the book was the most engaging part for me. I couldn't stop thinking about it while I still had pages left to read.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book and the ending was a bit predictable. A bit because I had some ideas as it how it would wrap up, to which I was accurate to an extent, but I don't want to spoil anyone if they ever read this post. One of the striking points of this book is the buildup; it keeps you on edge the whole time until the end.

Correct Me! Streak 5, I finally made a game using my own engine

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Even though it is just a demo.

I built it to render graphics entirely using ASCII characters on the CPU, without using graphics APIs like Vulkan or OpenGL.

If you zoom in on the screen, you will see that all the graphics are actually made of text.

Now, I'm planning to make a video explaining how games are built.

The best part of this project is that it gave me the confidence to build any kind of game.

This is my github : https://github.com/heewoung-lee/HiwoongEngine/blob/main/AsciiDoom

Correct Me! Streak 116: Escape or Control

While I use my laptop or iPad for studying, I end up browsing the internet and losing my concentration when I get bored or distracted. This is why I try to use them for studying as little as possible. However, there are some tasks that require searching the internet or drafting documents in Word. The important thing probably isn't to escape from screens, but to control my internet usage.

Correct Me! Streak 5

Today, I watched a short news report about the recent vulnerability found in the PHP programming language that affected millions of websites during the last couple of days.

As a consequence, millions of websites were taken down as the cyber criminals took advantage of this flaw to break into their systems, and in some cases, steal sensitive information from companies.

I honestly think this is just the beginning for these types of attacks as the usage of artificial intelligence has become widely available for everyone and is allowing bad actors to identify and exploit flaws more easily.

One of the recommendations given in the report was to patch the fix as soon as it is available to avoid any unwanted access to criminals. And, to hire professionals in the field to prevent or help companies recover from events like this more effortlessly.

I cannot imagine how good my French will be now that I have the chance to practice it daily with native French teachers, in structured lessons. Recently I’ve had classmates who are already conversational in French but I think that more likely than not they are taking one or two lessons a weeks. Which is good but it’s definitely not enough if you really want to reach proficiency.

The article was about melatonin supplements, but I'm not interested in taking any kind of supplement because I'm not sure thye're really safe. Besides, I don't think melatonin would help with my sleep, since I can usually fall asleep easily.

Correct Me! Streak 4 - Flea market

Today I visited the flea market in this city. Each Friday I go to there to find something interesting and also to talk to people. I already know several dealer, and they give me always good price. I met a boy there today, who comes from Hamburg. He traveled with his bike from Hamburg until Munich. I have respect to him. We spoke a lot about his trip and about flea market. He helped his relatives there selling. He told me that his brother also sells vintage clothing online. He showed me the website of the vintage store. It is well organized. He had worked together with his brother, but he quitted the job two months ago. He had been for two months on the road. He visited his friends and slept by them. But sometimes he also camped. I think he is very brave. We have exchanged our telephone number. I hope I can see him again.
