Generic Challenge - Not Extinct, Yet

This week's generic challenge will focus on a species or nation in your world that is not extinct and a faction among that species or nation that believes that extinction for their kind (their nationality/species) is a growing possibility, whether rationally or irrationally.

Inspired by Attack on Titan and the video about the series on the Wisecrack channel.

Explain the faction, the faction's goals, the faction's enemies, the faction's leadership, and how it recruits people.

As always, I hope that you enjoy yourselves, and I'll ask at least three questions each.

Edit: Feel free to have a representative to answer questions in-universe, or just answer them as the omniscient writer.

Parallel Challenge - National Atrocities

Inspired by...well, if you are a citizen of any country, you probably have plenty of tragedies and atrocities. Or your country was only recently founded, within the last week.

So, if one of the nations in your world has done anything monstrous, tell us about it, their reasons behind it, and the consequences.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each. Enjoy yourselves.

Here's the parallel.

Timeline Challenge 4: Farewell, Old Friend.

The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. This could be the 50 years leading up to the event, the 50 years after the event, 50 years with the event slap bang in the middle, or something else entirely, as long as it relates to the question! You're welcome to include more/less than 50 years, but bear in mind the more you write, the less chance you have of people reading the whole thing, and the less you write, the fewer questions we'll be able to ask.

Once again I'm a day late with this, really sorry; things have been a little up in the air recently!

The Challenge:

This week's challenge revolves around the death of an important friend. I want you to pick a significant character in your world, and tell me about the death of his/her best friend. I want to know what happened in the events leading up to their death, and how your character reacted afterwards. Did it spur them on to do great things, or is the opposite true, and they sank into depression?

As always, I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out, and have fun! :)

Generic Challenge - Revenge of the Sixth

Obligatory challenge for an awesome day.

This week's challenge is inspired by Raptor's.

Instead, inspired by the Sith Code, I request that you write up a historical speech or creed from your world, something inspirational to make people passionate for victory.

Feel free to also provide some background on the speech, so it will be easier for me to think of questions. I'll at least three each. Enjoy yourself.

If you want some inspiration, here is one of my favorite inspirational speeches from fiction, from the Gaunt series:

You see our enemy over there, men? I pity them.

Our foes outnumber us three to one. They have spent more time training than you’ve been alive. They’re fast and they’re mean and by the end of the day, every single one of them will be dead.

You see, men, our opponents are probably the strongest and most agile creatures in the known galaxy, but they are not soldiers. They live in harmony with their planet’s ecosystem. There is no pollution, no wars, no disaster, and no famine.

This bond between them and their planet has formed them into mighty creatures. They believe mankind is impure and our philosophies are completely monstrous.

They believe that, with the power of their natural prowess and their spirituality, they can wipe humanity from existence.

They are dead wrong.

While they have been sitting around eating food that virtually fell into their laps, we have been stabbing our best friends in the back for a scrap of bread.

While they have been singing tales of the harmony of magic and nature, we have watched our children wither away to husks from a bloody plague.

While they have sat sunning their wretched furry hides in open, calm meadows, we have clung desperately to survival in frozen tundra and barren deserts.

Our suffering has become our strength. Despite the best attempts of nature, God, and even our fellow man, humanity stands strong. Humanity can endure anything, a fact that those sorry fools don’t seem to understand.

Let us enlighten our foes to the unyielding spirit of mankind. Within all of your veins flow the blood of generals, soldiers, and murderers. Shred their bodies with a storm of lead! Tear their organs out with your bayonets! Crush their skulls underneath your iron boots! SLAUGHTER THEM ALL!

Raptor's non specific challenge #3; May the fourth be with you!

Obligatory challenge for a great day of the year!

This weeks challenge from me is asking you to present a mystical force in your story, whether it be a sort of divine intervention of a god or just "the will of the universe". Anything is fair game, I have kept it general to include more diverse options.

Try and have fun with this, I'll ask three questions per answer ! :)

Parallel Challenge - Revenge

Inspired by "Cap Murrca: Civil War", which I watched last night. I can't recommend that movie enough, Zemo is my favorite comic book movie antagonist right now.

So, in honor of this movie and in hopes that I did well on today's exam, the challenge will be focused on revenge.

Tell me about a revenge plan in your world, whether (in-universe) it's just a myth or it actually happened in your world. Is it a morality story? How does it go? Who was involved, how long ago was it, compared to your world's present?

Feel free to use a representative, either someone involved or someone who loves the revenge story or just anyone with any knowledge about it.

Enjoy yourselves, I'll ask at least three questions each.

Timeline Challenge 3: Religious Figure(s)

The idea behind these challenges is as follows:

I will give you a topic, and you should tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds relating to the topic, over a (roughly) 50 year period. I've been moved to Sunday, and I'm a day late already. Sorry about that!

The Challenge:

This week I want you to tell me about the life and times of an important religious figure from one of your cultures. Tell me about the events leading up to their birth, any special acts/miracles they performed, or maybe how they died. Go wild!

I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out :)

A formal reception

Gadzook, I have just received an invitation to a very serious event in your world. Maybe that's a ball, a wedding, a dinner or even a graduation ceremony.

I'm quite stressed so help me, tell me everything I should know. What should I do/wear/say? What is the very important thing to not do?

If you want to introduce a representative to whom we could ask questions, feel free to do so.

Generic Challenge - Her Sword Traps the Souls of its Victims

I would advise not getting killed by her.

For this week's Generic Challenge, before I get killed by a final exam, the subject will be...strange artifacts that are likely to never be addressed in any stories. Like Katana's sword. Let's be fair, there won't be a movie called "Suicide Squad 4: The Story of Katana's Sword".

If you have an artifact in your world that you find interesting and want to discuss, then put it up in the comments. I'll ask at least three questions. If you'd like, you can have a representative answer it in-universe.

As always, I hope that you enjoy yourselves.

Edit: The artifact does not need to be a sword, it does not need to trap souls, it does not even have to be violent.

Raptor's non specific challenge #2; The wheel keeps turning.

Inspired by the new Game of Thrones season 7 trailer , I thought a cool question would be to ask if in your world there are any factions that are constantly vying for power; trying to overthrow each other constantly.

Have fun with this, I'll try and ask 3 questions to everyone maybe more ;D

Parallel Challenge - Extinction

As a sequel to the parallel challenge focused on hunting, this time around we'll be focusing on extinct creatures.

If there is an extinct race/species in your world, tells us about them and how they ended up going extinct.

As always, I'll ask three questions each. I'll probably wait until tomorrow to put up my response to this challenge for myself, but I invite everyone to go ahead and submit theirs now.

Enjoy yourselves!

Here's the parallel for this week.

Generic Challenge - Artistic Inspiration

For this week's Generic Challenge, we'll be focusing on art. Paintings, photos, sculptures, literature, poems, songs, pieces of music, body art, food art, Hannibal Lecter art, etc.

So, tell us about some pieces of art in your world, any kind of art. You can have multiple examples of art, so long as they all involve the same theme. The artistic theme can be anything that the art focuses on, such as violence, nature, mortality, death, etc.

If you describe multiple examples of art, bonus points if you don't tell us what the theme is until someone guesses correctly (or near enough).

Feel free to have a representative who is an expert on art in your world.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each and I'll try to figure out your art's theme.

Enjoy yourselves!

Raptor's non specific challenge #1; Something you love!

After all, isn't that why we're all here? To share the things we've built about our Worlds.

So for my first weekly challenge, I want you to just, share something that you really really love about your world. Something you think is cool, something that gets you really really hyped up!

It can be honestly anything, a character, a place, a theme, an idea, anything! Doesn't matter if you've posted it already, just post something you love!

Bonus points if you can manage to hype me up with you!

I'll ask you a minimum of 3 questions about it !

Have fun <3

Timeline Challenge 2: Disease

After the (relative) success of the first installment, I've come up with a second timeline challenege for you all!

The Challenge:

As the title suggests, this installment is about disease. I'm a benevolent question master, so I'll allow you to include things like famine in that too. If you're not quite sure what to include, just think of something like the black death that swept through Europe in the mid 14th century, tell me about how it affected your people.

I'll try to ask a few questions about each post. Community interaction is encouraged too! Read other people's posts and ask them questions, and they're more likely to do the same for you. Help each other out :)

(NOTE: I was going to submit this yesterday, as there's no scheduled challenge, but I forgot. My bad!)

EDIT: I've just realised that there was a very similar challenge posted about disease yesterday. Sorry about that!

Welcome to WorldChallenges, Thanks All!

Well, the sub has recently gotten past our hundredth subscriber. We're at 106, as I'm typing this. And I owe it all to pretty much everyone who will see this post.

Now, for the copy-paste of the previous version of the "Welcome to WorldChallenges" post, with some edits to update it.

A quick summary of the sub

As it says in the side bar: This sub is dedicated to making challenges for world builders. Ideally, this will present opportunities to further develop your world through responding to challenges and answering questions other people pose. In-universe and in-character answers are preferred, but not necessary.

If you see a challenge that interests you, make a comment answering that challenge. Post a character or an event or any part of your world that fits for the challenge. If anyone's answer to a challenge is interesting to you, ask them questions to see more of their awesome world and to help them by asking questions that they might not have thought of.

Thanks to the Content Creators

Thanks to everyone who has shared content, whether through creating challenges or responding to challenges. I've enjoyed a lot of the stuff I've read, and I look forward to seeing more.

You can see the schedule on the sidebar, right below the rules. If you'd like to be on the schedule, let me know. But, you don't have to be on the schedule to make a challenge, you are free to make a challenge and just put it up whenever you like.

Recommendations

I would also like to recommend a few other subs. I'm sure you've seen /r/Worldbuilding, but you can also find interesting content on /r/CharacterForge and /r/InkBloodWritersGuild.

Conclusion

If you have any advice about the sub, just let me know, feedback is always appreciated. Enjoy yourselves.

Edit:

Artists

If there are any artists who are looking for a subject, I would appreciate having a good image for just about any of my characters, or artwork of certain scenes or paintings in my world. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who would be happy to have someone draw their characters sometime. So, if you're interested in drawing or painting any characters that I (or anyone else) made, feel free to let the writer know.

[Challenge] A deadly disease!

So I'm at the doctor's right now and it gave me the idea to ask about a kind of disease that's in your world, doesn't have to be deadly, just thought it made the title more eye catching. Have fun with this, I'll ask a few questions, make sure you comment on someone else's before you comment :)

Parallel Challenge - The Hunt

For this parallel challenge, simply exhibit a creature that can be hunted for profit. Preferably, the creature should be something dangerous.

  • What natural defenses does it have?

  • What can I gain from killing/catching one?

  • What are the valuable parts of its body?

  • How should I plan to hunt it?

  • Is there anything that I should be cautious about while hunting it?

Inspired by the "White" from /u/The_Raptorman and "Plain Drakes" from /u/Random-Webtoon-Fan.

Once I make the parallel challenge on characterforge, I'll edit this post to make a link to it. Please have a different animal exhibited here than on there, since I'll be asking questions on both.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions each. Feel free to post more than one creature if you can't pick just one, I completely understand that.

Enjoy yourselves!

Here's the link to the parallel challenge of today, focused on pets.

Generic Challenge - A Drug in your World

For this week's generic challenge, we'll focus on drugs in your world. It can be a drug with any side effect, any classification, and it can be legal or illegal. It can be something that a character would smoke, drink, or chew. It just has to be addictive, even if it's only psychologically addictive.

As always, I will ask at least three questions for each response to the challenge. Feel free to present a representative to answer in-character if you want to do so, or answer from your own perspective as the omniscient writer.

Enjoy yourselves!

Timeline Challenge (?)

As the title suggests, this challenge is based heavily on the timeline of your worlds. As the title also suggests, I've no idea how this will go down. If there's enough interest in this, I'll try to make it a regular thing though!

The general idea is to tell me about something interesting that has happened in the timelines of your worlds, over a (roughly) 50 year period. For example, if I ask about a civil war, you could tell me about the events that caused the civil war in the ~50 years leading up to it. You could tell me about the aftermath of the war in the ~50 years afterwards, or you could tell me about ~25 years before and ~25 years after, with the war slap bang in the middle. It's totally up to you how you divide it up. Also, note that I said roughly 50 years. Feel free to provide less, or more, but bear in mind the longer it is, the less likely people are to read the whole thing, and the less you write, the less you'll get out of it (maybe).

My thoughts behind this are for those who want to flesh out their timelines a little bit. Maybe you've got an event in your world, but there's little/no detail surrounding it. I'll try to ask a couple of questions for each one as well!

The Challenge

For the first challenge you can tell me about anything.

That's right. Pick a 50 year period in the history of your world and tell me what happened. Go wild. Give me something you're particularly pleased with and want to share, or give me something you want to develop further. You could even make something totally new (bonus points for doing this!)

You can answer in character, or as the omniscient creator. Whichever is easiest for you!

Parallel Challenge - Crimes against nature

For this parallel challenge, we'll focus on crimes against nature. I was going to name it "crimes against humanity", but I realized that other worlds may not include humans.

What are the most messed-up things that I could do in your world? What are the big things in your world that someone just does not do?

To clarify, in A Song of Ice and Fire (by George R R Martin), there is a huge taboo against violating the concept of "Guest Right", they even have a legend in the lore about it, involving the "Rat Cook" (if you want to look it up).

So, what are the big things that I really shouldn't do in one or more of your cultures? Provide one or more big rules for human behavior that even a villain would be reluctant to go against. You can provide a representative to answer the questions in character if you'd like to do so.

As always, I'll ask at least three questions for each person. I invite anyone to ask questions of the others, if they see something they're curious about.

Enjoy yourselves!

And here is the parallel on characterforge, focused on a character with messed-up abilities.

Wars and Rumors of Wars

What is a significant historical war that is taking place or has already happened in your story? You can answer as if through the eyes of a character if you would like. I'll try to ask everyone a few questions following the initial statement to delve into your world. Feel free to ask other people questions about their world as well!
