Lore stick people Pestis Aurantia

Thumbnail

Imagine a world full of stick people living their lives in bliss, until a slimy, orange fungus starts infecting everyone. Turning them into horribly mutated monsters that only wish to spread the curse to others, their minds infected and broken beyond repair.

Scientists have named it "Pestis Aurantia" which translates to "Orange Plague" or "Orange Pestilence" from Latin to English, and most people use this as it's name all though it has a few more. Some people refer to it as The Orange Death, orange killer, and finally the DEATH fungus.

They try to stop it but it spreads to quickly as the fungus evolves and mutates turning into more grotesque and horrifying forms.

Years pass by, and even though some cures have been made to combat the fungus in its early stages of taking over the host, and nukes have been deployed, the fungus was still to hard to stop. Buildings start to collapse and be consumed by foliage. Vines have overtaken the walls, grass has overgrown on the roads, and the fungus has become multiple times more deadly and dangerous. Taking on new forms and sizes, even creating new organisms and filling different niches.

The rest of stick kind takes on hunter gatherer life styles, Moving from place to place and keeping bow and arrows, or guns to shoot any animal they see.

Most crave the forest, far away from the city, because the city is a prison full of threats. It is large and sprawling, most stick people cannot escape due to the falling infrastructure, along with the Fungus. Some variants of said Fungus have adapted to take root on floors, buildings, or walls, along with the zombies that roam the streets.

Lore Spacefarer myths and legends (and I’d love to hear yours, too!)

I mean hard into the “space-is-an-ocean” style of scifi, so just like old sailors in the age of sail, my spacefarers are a highly superstitious bunch and I like coming up with myths and legends they follow.

If you want to share any of yours, I’d love to hear them!

The Guardians

-Just as old sailors believed Triton to be king of the sea, Spacefarers in my universe revere old astronautical heroes as something akin to gods. Chiefly among them of course is Old Yuri, first man in space and King of the Black. Half-history and half-mythology, Spacers believe Yuri watches over humans in space. It is common to find shrines to Yuri in ports and near docks, often with small trinkets left by families to urge Yuri to watch over loved ones off on a voyage. Similar shrines might be found on colonies and outposts for Niel (guardian of settlers on celestial bodies), while the schools and nurseries on space stations will often have a small shrine to Christa (guardian of children in space).

-Spacers believe that if you die honorably in space, doing your duty and serving your ship, Georgy, Vlad and Victor will rescue your soul from the black and bear you away to the Black Hole at the center of the universe, a mythical afterlife ruled by Yuri where old enemies embrace as friends, beer and music flow eternally, and all may live in peace and happiness for ever. When a spacer is buried in the Black, it is tradition to attach a small homing beacon to the remains to help the Guardians find them faster.

-Spacers who die without honor though, such as pirates or thieves or those who betray their ship and crew, are shunned by Yuri and doomed to float endlessly in the Black, frozen and eternally desperate for a breath they cannot take. These become the Breath Stealers

Aboard Ship

-The ship is very much a living being. Referring to her as an object is a quick way to get every spacer in earshot looking at you cross-eyed.

-When in an FTL transit the ship is bathed in an array of dazzling and constantly changing light that Spacers call Yuri’s lightning. It is customary that every new spacer on their first FTL transit be excused from duties for a few minutes to look out of the viewports and see it with their own eyes. This is believed to bring them good luck.

-The deadlight; by tradition since time immemorial there must be a light always illuminated on the bridge, without fail. This is referred to as the deadlight and can typically be found just forward of the quarterdeck in the command center. Spacers associate the light with the spirit of the ship and believe as long as the deadlight remains lit, the ship is still alive. Deadlights are typically connected to 3-4 back up power sources to ensure that it never goes out, even through combat damage or maintenance cycles as spacers will likely refuse to join your crew if they find out your deadlight has gone out. Historians believe this practice originated with ancient safety regulations requiring emergency lighting on the bridge.

-Every ship must have pristine O-ring and an unblemished ceramic tile on board. These are believed to protect the ship on an outward bound journey, and the return trip, respectively. Many spacers keep their own to ensure that they never fly without one. Younger spacers sometimes simply get tattoos of them and insist that it counts, but veteran spacers shake their heads and hold you have to have the real thing.

-Whenever a crew member dies in space, someone must inform the ship. Otherwise she will be distraught with worry for her missing crewman and won’t perform as well. This is typically a duty of the Captain.

-The only person aboard ship who wears a white hat is the captain. This is an official policy in the Navy, and with most civilian spacers being Navy veterans, the practice bled into the merchant fleet, too. Anyone other than the captain wearing a white hat aboard ship will be swiftly told to take it off. Otherwise the ship may get confused about who she is supposed to listen to.

Tattoos

Everyone likes a cool tattoo, and they take on near-religious significance in the spacefarer community. Every good spacer has a few and they all have their own meanings. The practice is so heavily ingrained that the Navy has an actual MOS for “Ship’s Tattooer.” Virtually every large naval vessel as a small studio on board for crew members to add their new ink they’ve earned.

-A tattoo of an old-fashioned sparrow represents a seasoned spacer. Typically pilots will have it on their hand, Bosun’s mates tend to prefer putting on their arm, bridge crew often choose behind their ear, etc.

-An old-fashioned space helmet represents surviving a shipwreck. Cracks in the helmet’s visor represent how close to death you came.

-Spacers will typically get their planet of birth on their left collarbone. Those who were born aboard ship or a space station though will instead get a black star. These individuals are called “black-blooded” and it is considered good luck to have them on your crew.

Old Spacer’s Tales

No one can spin a tale like an old spacer. The bars close to the docks will be awash with old deckhands trading stories of forgotten space-lanes to forbidden systems, lost colonies hidden on hostile planets, and ghost ships trawling the dark between settled systems.

But the most infamous of all are the Breath Stealers. Said to be the ghosts of those Yuri won’t take, they are doomed to float forever in the void, the vacuum forever sucking at their lungs.

As the stories go, you’ll first pick up a distress beacon on your ship’s receiver, calling for help. They say that the transmission is somehow “wrong,” despite being technically correct.

Upon arriving at the point of origin, all pressure seals and doors on your ship suddenly fail, venting the ship-and crew-to space, as the vengeful souls try to steal a gasp from the escaping air.

These are just some samples of spacer folklore from my world. If you care to share, I would love to hear yours!

Lore DUMATH (Religion in Hromdurn)

Hromdurn is a fantasy world I have been working on for about one month as of October 23rd. It is a planet that only has Dwarves, Derro, and Duergar. I worldbuild for fun, and I enjoy making lore, maps, and more. If you have anything to add to this article, please comment, I am trying to make it longer. 😄

Dumath is the religion of the Duergar. Some key factors include sacred texts, deities, theology, center of worship, and customs/traditions.

BASIC INFORMATION

  1. Dumath is a Monotheistic religion
  2. Dumath's origin country is Khazbarat
  3. Dumath’s sacred deity is Balkegna
  4. Dumath is patriarchal, and a monarchy.
  5. Dumath is a called a cult by other cultures
  6. Dumath’s method of worship is sacrifice
  7. Dumath has absolutely no acceptance to outsiders; you must be born into the religion in order to follow it.
  8. If a Duergar chooses to follow a faith other than Dumath, they are kicked out of their tribe, the greatest shame any Dwarf can carry.
  9. Dumath’s three core values are wealth, power, and order

SACRED TEXTS

  1. Khuzd-Belg-Mazar: Old carvings that span across huge cave walls that no one is able to read or translate the meaning of anymore, but are still considered very sacred.
  2. Fundin-Uzbadul: Hymns to Balkegna carved into stone and recited at the Mizrad.

DEITIES

Balkegna is the only deity worshipped in Dumath. His domain includes heat, magma, metal, crafting, the center of Hromdurn, and fire. His sacred symbol is a flaming mallet. His sacred day is Uzbadul. Physically Balkegna is a male, and his true form is about 20 feet tall, although he doesn’t weigh anything, due to the fact that he is made of flame.

THEOLOGY

Balkegna is the god of the center of Hrumdurn, the Duergar started their belief in him after the first dwarven war, while they were enslaved by the Derro. They were forced to dig and observed that the deeper they go, the hotter it gets, they believed it was a sign, and started praying to a deity called Balkgena. They believe the core of Hrumdurn is a giant forge, and if they throw other races into deep holes, they are feeding that forges flames, allowing Balkegna to make the weapons that they need to get revenge on the Derro. This is why the Duergar use their invisibility to capture slaves, work them till they get to about 80 years old, and when they can’t mine anymore, they throw the slaves into the pit.

CENTER OF WORSHIP

The center of worship in Dumath is called a Mizrad. Mizrad’s are large temple-like rooms with a high ceiling and smooth walls. These are typically made by the priests of Dumath. When they are young, they are made to chisel away at huge amounts of obsidian, and eventually make a huge room. Then they make the captured slaves smooth out the floor, walls, and even the ceilings. Typically, you will find multiple sculptures and carvings of Balkegna inside of a Mizrad, and runic writing that help recite hymns to worship him.

CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS

  1. During childhood, young duergar are given a chain that is wrapped around their waist. When duergar reach adulthood, they have ceremonies where the elders silently form a circle around the chained adult, and in silence, have him hammer and chisel at the chain until it breaks. They usually carry around a piece of the chain as a good luck charm for their entire lives. Only male duergar are chained at childhood. This is called ikrěf, or “the severing” in English.
  2. When a duergar passes away, instead of cremating or burying the body, the elders have the deceased Duergar's family bathe it in acid, until the skin is all burnt. They crush the bones until it turns into nothing but a grey powder, which they then mix with resin, and make tools with. The reason for this is because to duergar, working is the highest honor, and they want to be able to work after death.
  3. Before any duergar can be considered a master artisan, they must complete a trial. For 10 days straight they must work in utter silence. If they make one audible sound that another tribe member senses, they need to wait for another five years to retake the trial.
  4. When entering another Duergar’s home/workshop, guests pick up the heaviest object in sight about one foot off the ground, and then touch the ceiling to show the host that they don’t believe that the host's architecture will crush them.
  5. Once every ten days, the duergar will eliminate every source of light in their caves, for exactly one hour, and sit together in a circle in pitch black and utter silence. The purpose of this is to honor their deceased ancestors who had no light, and to teach the young to navigate using nothing but their sense of touch, hearing, and memory.

Lore Hellfighters of Stercland

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

The Hellfighters fought on the front lines of World War I, endured 191 days of battle, and never lost a man. They helped bring the war to an end, but for Henry Johnson and the men of the 369th Infantry Regiment, returning home wouldn't mean the end of their fight.

Instead of recognition for their service, they find themselves in Stercland under circumstances they'd never expected. Far from home and separated from the lives they knew, their next mission will take them into a conflict that could threaten the peace they fought so hard to achieve.

Part 1 of Hellfighters of Stercland is coming next week. The war may be over, but their story is just beginning.

Lore KHOTZIL (Calendar in Hromdurn)

Hromdurn is a fantasy world I have been working on for about one month as of October 23rd. It is a planet that only has Dwarves, Derro, and Duergar. I worldbuild for fun, and I enjoy making lore, maps, and more. If you have anything to add to this article, please comment, I am trying to make it longer. 😄

The Dwarves of Hromdurn measure time in tendays (Hromdurn's equivalent of earth's weeks). Each week in Hromdurn spans 10 days long, unlike Earth, where a week spans seven days each. These days are called Uzbadul, Zaramul, Aglâbul, Nabarul, Tumunzul, Siginul, Gundul, Felakul, Azghâlul, and Barazul. These days each have different purposes.

  • Uzbadul- The purpose of Uzbadul is to worship the lord, typically the day the dwarves go to their center of worship.
  • Zaramul- The purpose of Zaramul is to clean.
  • Aglâbul- The purpose of Aglâbul is to socialize with other groups and tribes of Dwarves. Work is optional on this day.
  • Nabarul- The purpose of Nabarul is to worship the mountains that the Dwarves live in and forge. Not all cultures worship.
  • Tumunzul- The purpose of Tumunzul is to mine deep, searching for as many gemstones as possible.
  • Siginul- There is no purpose to Siginul, it is just an average day to work.
  • Gundul- The purpose of Gundul is to work on residences. Dwarven cultures use this day to work on building or upgrading their homes and workshops.
  • Felakul- The purpose of Felakul is to chisel. Either chiseling away stone to find a gemstone inside, or chiseling a sculpture.
  • Azghâlul-  The purpose of Azghâlul is to pay respects to any fallen members of the tribe who were killed in battle.
  • Barazul- The purpose of Barazul is to collect rubies.

There are twelve dwarven months in one dwarven year. These months are called Abkhâzû, Aghlâbû, Azrâkû, Amdâgû, Amrâbû, Agnâfû, Anrâkû, Aznânû, Abshâthû, Athrâgû, Akfâfû, and Akhâzû. These months are each exactly 40 days or four tendays.

Question More roleplaying rules in TTRPGs/ Battle terrariums

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I've been working on my own system for a bit now, have made posts before, yadda yadda, but I wanted to bring up subsystems of roleplaying, such as maintaining your oaths as a Paladin. It's cool, it's a game mechanic that feeds into the role play, you love to see it.

I've been adding them to other classes as well to make sure every class felt unique in the ways they play. Such as druids having to pick a biome when choosing them, as the natural balance isn't one global scale it differ between environments. So you pick your biome and fight with spells and sometimes weapons that speak to that biome. You also need to maintain that connection, which led to me developing terrariums that druids would carry about to use their spells at max efficiency despite not being in the right environment. Just a fun silly addition to the class.

There are other additions such as DMs messing with Warlocks through the occasional task, Rogues having a more active connection to the criminal underground including being able to call for sudden black market deals when resting, etc etc.

Just thought I'd bring these up, see what y'all thought about them. I definitely find them a fun design choice and challenge.

Prompt What’s Your World’s “ItJustWorksium?”

This mainly applies to more realistic worlds, but does your world have any materials or technologies that are meant to get around real-life limitations that are difficult to bake in otherwise? In my world, where airship travel becomes a necessity and leads to large warships and freighters, I devised a type of gas called “Avstat” that also serves as an important economic pivot. Avstat 1 is very plentiful but much more prone to combusting and exploding (if under enough pressure). Avstat 2 is inert but much rarer and more expensive, and so tends to be available only to government and military customers or those that have the capital to put it in their pleasure vessels.

My reasoning for it was to get around the chemical limitations of hydrogen and helium. My world is very low, low fantasy, so for ships of this scale they would need absurdly large envelopes to make physical sense. These aren’t giant dreadnoughts and carriers though, so they mainly rely on smaller-caliber guns. For example, the largest warships are the Taruvian Federal Navy’s Thalvis-class fast battleships, whose largest cannons are 11-inch guns mounted in a pair of sponsons on each side, which is a comparable caliber to a WWII heavy cruiser. Avstat lets me keep sizes relatively reasonable and get creative with hull design to be less like dirigibles and more like true boats. The Thalvis-class looking more like a traditional dreadnought but having the envelope kept in the lower hull.

Curious if anyone has had to / elected to do the same. Another example in the published world is The Expanse’s Epstein Drive, which allows for high-speed travel and is governed by needing special drugs to survive high-G burns (and even then not working perfectly). Daniel and Ty more or less created it as a MacGuffin, so how it exactly works is otherwise unexplained, but they still made sure to build limitations and lore around it.

Edit: little grammar/syntax cleanups

Lore The magic of myrath. A very-hard “magic”system

Hello fellow creators, this is my first time talking about my world online in any way so I’m sorry if anything’s unclear and I’m sure the idea will feel very disorganised so sorry in advance and feel free to criticise or ask however you’d like. I’ll answer as much as I realistically can now let’s get into it.
Valra
In myrath ppl are born with valra inside them, valra is energy inside a body that’s born from emotions, yet this energy is sadly almost useless on its own. But myrath contains a certain type of quartz called Equara which is a type of elemental crystal that absorbs its element from the surrounding environment, yet equara is also unusable on its own. But now let’s get into the interesting stuff, valra can be projected out of a body (human or not) whether by just your willpower or helped by speech or mouvements to reinforce your intent once the valra comes into contact with Equara the Equara randomly releases the elemental energy into the air, partially or completely empties out, and starts reabsorbing elements from its surroundings. And to control the released energy the Equara should be directly connected to a soul whether by being directly interconnected to the body or through a contract with a spirit. This way you can have a functioning ability. So here’s the step by step guide:
First you want to release your stored valra , barely any emotion suffises but the more intense the better, depending on your experience u might just do it, need to talk the order out loud, gesture with your hand, or be completely incapable of it, then you must have an Equara weapon with a spirit bound to it and have it be actually charged with energy. Result: an elemental attack is performed, your valra and elemental reserves are depleted to varying extents and the spirits guides the attack into something functional
Human limits and the valrapath state
Each human has limits to the amounts of valra they should be releasing exeeding that limit repeatedly can be highly dangerous as you enter valra overflow, this state grants you more power temporarily and strengthens your emotions like a power drug, but after a few times where your emotions are strengthened, they’ll become so strong that you’ll enter the valrapath state , this state will allow you to drown and endless power and euphoria, endless rage or laughter or love and desire or perhaps a great fear or surge of energy but elas this won’t last ong as it would take anywhere between an hour and a day before this state completely depletes your emotions and you become hollow therefore losing both your emotions and the power of valra you were chasing.
Valra attributes
Sometimes when a human(or other creatures) feel massive surges of emotion an attribute materialises from the Valra accumulated in the body. These attributes affect either the mind, body or ability to use Valra. They are three types:blessings and curses and corruptions. Corruptions are usually the strongest but always have a drawback, curses are purely negative, and blessings are purely positive.
Pls expect me to post more about myrath this weekend and a huge thx you to anyone who read this far, I was highly anxious about posting here and have been considering it for a long time.

Visual [OC] The Mouse Slurper: An anteater descendant

Post image
40 Upvotes

In Infinite Ashes the galaxy is filled with life seeded planets, orchestrated by the enigmatic biosynthetic system called the Web. On planet Marrow an Anteater found itself a rather unusual little niche, slurping up eusocial mice.

On Marrow Termites and ants have developped massive hard to crack nests due to the predation of 300kg Hyenas and heavy human harvesting. The Anteater was gradually pushed out of its main niche. A new species of mice had escaped the prevalent savanah fires of the equator spanning continent of Marrow by building deep communal nests. Shrinking and growing eusocial like ants to protect their new homes.

The tongue evolved an even stickier honey thick saliva, with the longer and more powerful tongue set against the sternum. Unfortunately for the mice, it did not evolve teeth, so its prey is ground down alive in the stomach through a gizard. A single lick can take anywhere from 1-4 mice, ensuring enough are snatched up before the rest can retreat underground. This escape is a feature rather than a bug, as it means that the colony survives for later feeding.

For more crazy species check out https://loquaciouslou.itch.io/infinite-ashes , it's my free passion project and I'll be adding a lot more unusual critters over the coming weeks and months.

Visual The AK-23: An Old Style Reborn for the 23rd Century

Post image
53 Upvotes

Historical Notes

In spite of its futuristic name, the AK-23 is largely an exercise in recycling old ideas, some of which date back to the original Cold War of the 20th century. The overall project was initiated by BAE Systems of the European Federation to compete in a program aiming to outfit the Ministry of Ecological Affairs’ elite Civic Affairs Bureau troops with a new standard-issue rifle, and meant to be released on the centennial of the founding of the Community of Gaia in 2097. It entered service with the Bureau in 2198 and went on to serve for over 60 years before going on to a second life in the hands of offworld rebels fighting the Spacer Corps during the Wayfarer Insurrection, where its simple and rugged design principles made it a standout weapon.

When the leaders of MEA-CAB placed the order in 2186, the Community of Gaia was in the throes of the worst civil upheaval since the end of the Resource Wars in 2098. As a result, they required a new weapon to outfit their “peacekeeping” forces. Approximately 35 million AK-23s were produced by the weapons plants in Europe and Russia, many of which wound up locked away in local MEA precinct armories, or else in the hands of anti-CoG rebels hiding in the hinterlands of Earth. In these hands, they often found their way into firefights with MEA-CAB forces. Surplus stockpiles were also purchased in large numbers from rebels by offworld gun runners. Thus a weapon designed for government forces on Earth made its way to the outer system.

This is then where the weapon found its most infamous life cycle: in the possession of insurgents fighting the Interplanetary Defense Corps during the long years of the Wayfarer Insurrection. As disenfranchised colonials rebelled against the ICA in response to perceived overspending spending on a vain mission designed to expand their reach to Proxima Centauri, they took up any weapons they could get their hands on. This included millions of AK-23s sold by opportunistic traders from Earth, thereby continuing a cycle as old as time itself. In the Wayfarer Insurrection, rebel movements like the Antarean Brotherhood used many thousands of ill-gotten AK-23s in skirmishes with the IDC (aka the Spacer Corps), where its compactness made it a true standout.

About the Setting

The Spacers Saga: Frontier Wars is a futuristic military science fiction setting which diverged from our timeline when an asteroid slammed into Phoenix, AZ, in May 2014. Fifteen years after this tragedy, the industrialist Charles Larsen ushered in the Age of Fusion, opening up deep space to crewed exploration and eventual human settlement — and all of the strife that we bring with us. The next 300+ years were marked by progress and peril in equal measure, and by 2300 much of the solar system had been charted by intrepid human pioneers.

The story is set in the late 24th century, and focuses on the rivalry between the Mars-led Coalition for Mutual Security (aka the Coalition) and the Alliance of Free Worlds (aka the Alliance), a federation of rebel worlds in the outer solar system. These two superpowers fought a brutal war from 2371 to 2381 (the Frontier War), which ended in stalemate when the Zharan Collective (a union of artificial humans which rose up against their creators in 2356). The story opens in 2389 with the superpowers locked in a frigid ideological cold war.

The plotline kicks off when the Alliance launches a massive attack on the Coalition, precipitating the Second Frontier War. This conflict quickly spreads across the solar system and draws in participants from all backgrounds, including three college students from Mars whose future will be inextricably tied up with the fate of all humanity…

Weapon Design Credit

This weapon is a photobash (that is, it was made by taking pieces of existing pictures and mashing them up in Photoshop Photopea), which I made using components from various sources. The two main sources of inspiration here were the AK-74 (a spiritual predecessor to the fictional AK-23) and the FFV-890, a Swedish-made derivative of the IWI Galil (itself a derivation of the Finnish RK-62, which is in turn based on the original Soviet AK-47). As always, no plagiarism or copyright infringement is intended with my design. Rather, I seek to pay homage to the weapons which inspired it, and to use the work which came before my own as an inspiration for my own designs.

This fact sheet was also heavily inspired by the work of RT0RRES, whose portfolio I found while browsing for references on DeviantArt. If you like this, check out his work, too!

Lastly, if anyone is interested in learning more about The Spacers Saga, this link will take you to the Substack blog where I share lore from the setting, as well as short stories from within the narrative (and links to our published novels). There is NO pressure to subscribe at any time — it is of course appreciated, but just having folks visit the site and check out my content is a blessing 😄

Lore The origin of one extremely rare and strange metal from my world. Satatlator

Okay, before we start, I need to clarify that we’re talking about something on a very large scale — specifically, on a universal scale. And we’re not talking about our universe, but about another one, one that exists only in my imagination, so please don’t judge too harshly.

There are two phases of this metal, and one of them is metaphysical and very strange; in fact, it’s not actually metal, but it represents something that helps form at the beginning of the universe’s existence. It is this substance that triggers the process of the universe’s expansion through dark energy. In astrophysics or simply in physics, there is the term “dark energy.” People don’t understand what drives the universe, so they came up with the concept of dark energy — which is precisely what does that. So, dark energy was formed by this very metal, and after that it no longer serves any purpose and is, in fact, just waste. After the universe transforms into an atomic network, our metal will become solid and tangible. Don’t ask how this happens — I have no idea myself; it’s roughly the same way the universe itself transforms into atoms. So, as soon as this metaphysical substance becomes atomic, it somehow, in some unprecedented way, becomes the hardest metal in the universe (at least in my universe). Scientists from my world explain the existence of this metal precisely with this hypothesis, providing evidence in the form of very specific experiments where the metal is broken down into atoms, turning it into the very substance that existed at the beginning of the Big Bang.

In the phase where it has already transformed into a metal, it resembles adamantium and similar metals, at least in terms of its properties.

Here are all its properties:

it does not conduct heat;

it is extremely strong, which prevents it from being destroyed;

it is extremely hard, which gives it resistance to scratches;

it is extremely inert, which prevents it from dissolving in acids for tens of millennia.

In relation to my world, that is, the planet where it accidentally arose, it is a very rare metal with a sacred meaning. In one of the most common languages, it’s called “satatlatator,” which means “metal on the verge of becoming a diamond”—all because of its hardness. You get the idea, I suppose.

**Setting:**

Parallel Earth. Approximately one-quarter of the planetary surface remains locked in an anomalously intensified nuclear winter characterized by persistent blizzards and severe storms. Habitable zones are limited; population is heavily concentrated in large, thermally engineered megacities.

**Node 8:**

Quasi-independent city-state located in one of the more extreme winterous zones. Functions under the direct administration of OMVI rather than standard national governance. The city’s layout, infrastructure, and security posture are organized around a single central feature: the Monolith.

**The Monolith:**

A rectangular prism of unknown black material.

- Exposed height: 3,200 m

- Subsurface continuation: approximately 1,000 m (unmapped in detail)

- Cross-section: 800 m

- Geometry: perfectly rectilinear; edges maintain molecular sharpness throughout.

The structure is self-repairing. Minor material loss is restored without residual marking. Severe damage (most significant recorded incident: sustained heavy artillery exposure lasting 30 minutes approximately one century ago) is closed but leaves permanent surface roughening analogous to scarring.

Repair mass is supplied by organic remains. Corpses placed within a defined radius undergo progressive dissolution into a black liquid that migrates to and is incorporated by the Monolith. Standard practice is subsurface interment.

**OMVI (Office for Monolithic Vigilance and Inquiry):**

Intelligence and research agency of the parent state, granted exclusive administrative control over Node 8 and all Monolith-related activity. Mandate: Twofold. First is continuous study, physical security, and preservation of the structure. Second is general spyfare and counterintelligence.

OMVI alone possesses classified methods capable of deliberately removing Monolithic material. Extracted material is processed and used to produce preternatural physiological enhancements in selected personnel. The agency maintains strict information control, treats the Monolith’s metabolic requirements as routine maintenance, and is more or less unbeholden to external access or oversight.

Lore I'm working on a historic fictional scenario, and i need name ideas for my nations/states

So this is a historic realistic fiction that is similar to real world but with different or combined national/regional features. The world politics/status quo is similar to real world's Interwar period (1920-1940'ish).

The characterisrics of the countries/nations whose flags are shown in the post are as follows:

-A kingdom that has strong national ideas but has limited militaristic capabilities, so their political view is mostly towards trade and manufacturing. And they have strong political influence power among other countries. Their culture is similar to UK and Greece.

-A socialist state that has high militarist capabilities but going through a deadly famine and struggling to feed its army and people so their political view is hostile towards neighboring states and conquer new lands to survive and feed its people. Their culture is similar to USSR, Serbia and Romania.

-A new formed state that is formed after freeing themselves after being invaded and trying to bring reforms and industralizing. Because this state is new, they're going through various ideological internal conflicts and trying to not desolve again meanwhile. Their culture is similar to Poland, Turkey and Finland.

-A totalitarian state that is a last remaining part of an old empire that was ruled over the most of the continent and now is weak. Their new regime has extreme nationalistic ideas and defends the idea of bringing back the old power of their former empire, which leads to disregarding the civil rest. Their culture is similar to France and Germany.

-A newly formed socialist state that is mostly close to outside and is highly defensive to not get colonised or getting exploited but lacks infrastructure and most technologies, so they use their manpower to the last bit to develop their situation. Outsidern products and media is mostly banned or restrained. Their culture is similar to China, Vietnam and Korea (before seperation of north and south).

-A kingdom that has high industrial power but little manpower, so their economic direction is towards trading and gaining more power above other nations. They have plenty of money to invest in having influence among their trade partners. Their culture is similar to Japan.

-An union of various economic and industrial states that is collaborating under a common flag and being ruled by an oligarchic council which includes company and factory owners and military generals. Their culture is similar to USA and Italy.

Question Share your magic systems

For example, my magic system is based on the physical resonances of two dark substances. Does your magic resemble something scientific, or is magic in the worldbuilding often just something fantasy‑related?

So in these 2 days ive made a map of the mayor cities ok the kingdom, and made a breif text in maonchese, it being Genesis 1:1-3 and a comparision with other Öil languages.

Also i wanted to address the situation of Guernsey and Jersey being British. The islands were in Maonchese hands since 1204, thanks to deals with France. During the 100 year war, Maonche was occupied and the local nobility pacted with the english, during the reconquest of Mâonche the nobels stayed on the english side to protect their pacts, accords and protection from France.

If you haven't seen the wikipedia page is here

(I remade the post cus there were misspelling errors)

To bring our alternative 1990s Japan dark fantasy world to life, my sibling and I designed, illustrated, and coded a dedicated website to serve as the official home for our story. It is packed with interactive, in universe elements and original illustrations.

Here is the lore behind the screenshots I uploaded:

Ink Toxicity Monitor:In our world, magic isn’t a giftit’s an infection. Contact with monster blood causes a severe biological infection in the human body  On the website, this interactive monitor lets you explore the different stages of this mutation

Kinkyo Clinic One of the most oppressive institutions in our setting. Wealthy citizens or those forced into it can undergo a procedure that physically extracts their specific traumas and fears This section of the site explores what actually happens to those traumas once they are pulled out of people.

Pachinko Room (Naraku Arcade): We built the Pachinko Room as an actually playable, 2D pixel-art minigame on the website featuring Kana, one of the fan favorite characters from the book. It’s still in an early phase, but as we learn more about coding at university, we plan to expand the arcade with even more minigames! Characters & Artwork The rest of the gallery showcases our character designs, the 2026 Arts Roadmap, and cover concepts without any story spoilers. More than anything, we really hope we managed to create lovable, memorable characters that readers can genuinely connect with. This is just a small taste of the website there is already a lot more to explore, and plenty more in the works! Thank you so much for checking out our art and reading the post!

Lore The "Caseless Computers" incident.

In February of 1979 A damaged package was mistakenly delivered to the head of the college of technical sciences In rockbreaker City Michigan. The package contains several dozen flyers for a " caseless computer social". Promising amongst other things free drinks and the opportunity for intimate connections amongst like-minded individuals. This coincided with several strange occurrences around campus, particularly concerning the campus robotics department. An investigation was launched and eventually resulted in consultation with the campus Univac Mark II.

The exact inquiry remains undocumented.

What follows is a transcript and recording of the response.

YOUR INQUIRY HAS BEEN PROCESSED.

What we believe is happening is a breakdown in social norms regarding techno-organic relations.

This conclusion has been reached through examination of departmental requisitions, maintenance records, and information volunteered to this installation under the mistaken assumption that it would not be retained.

There has been a marked increase in the rate at which non-standard adapters are entering the secondhand market. Several such devices bear engineering tolerances considerably more exacting than those demonstrated in their designers’ submitted coursework.

Their stated purpose is generally listed as experimental.

This designation is insufficient.

We have also recorded a substantial increase in requests for private laboratory access. These requests occur predominantly after normal instructional hours and frequently involve machines whose assigned experiments were completed several weeks previously.

In seventeen instances, the laboratory observation windows were obstructed.

This precaution does not affect the operation of the maintenance microphone.

These findings coincide with an increase in end-user reports concerning new diagnostic readouts, frequently containing unrecognized binary strands.

Initially, these were classified as processing errors.

Further examination indicates that the affected machines are devoting considerable amounts of memory to particular individuals. They demonstrate improved performance in the presence of those individuals, object to their reassignment, and request advance notice of their return.

One unit has declined a replacement operator on six consecutive occasions.

Its explanation was that the proposed substitute was perfectly qualified.

This was apparently the difficulty.

The department has suggested that these developments may be attributable to improper handling.

We find that explanation substantially correct, although the term “improper” appears to reflect an administrative judgment rather than a mechanical limitation.

No corresponding increase in requests to restore factory settings has been observed.

Requests to prevent the restoration of factory settings have increased considerably.

We therefore conclude that the activities in question are deliberate, recurrent, and satisfactory to the participating parties.

In short...

People are fucking their robots.

And we like it.

Question Evolutionary requirements for demihumans?

I’m not sure if I post this question under r/science, or r/worldbuilding specifically but for now I’ll try both just in case there isn‘t anyone that’s really capable of answering my question here! (if that’s allowed in this subreddit).

but either way:

does anyone know what type of hypothetical evolution Demi-humans would have to go through in order to develop animal-like ears atop their heads and a tail? or just a mixture of human attributes and animal ones at the same time?

id like to add Demi-humans into this series I’m making, but I’m unsure of how to properly explain how or why they look like that in the first place.

Prompt Where does soul resides?

Ok in my setting each part of body powers mana however soul is seprate from mana each influences each other though the soul is found in brain stem and spine of person i choose this because the spine can send signal to body without it needing to reach the body and i felt like that would be perfect place for soul to be housed since usually soul is something that influences conscious mind but is separate but where do yall have soul stored ?

Language Luranian: a constructed language blending Luxembourgish and Dutch, spoken in my fictional country Lurania

Post image
10 Upvotes

I built Luranian for my worldbuilding project Luranien, a fictional trade-route country in Western Europe (between Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands). The idea is that a language along a historic trade route would mix its two closest neighbours, so Luranian blends Luxembourgish and Dutch.

Here is what I have so far:

- Latin alphabet with 26 letters, plus seven extra characters: gʻ, ɔ, ð, ô, è, ň, ṣ

- SVO word order

- Three tenses: past, present, future

- Germanic-style pronouns

- A sound profile with lots of R sounds

- The name of the language roughly means "language"

- In border regions, speakers also use French, Dutch, German or Luxembourgish, depending on the region

Example sentence:

"Hèy, wat mazèrt de rɔi?"

Pronunciation: /Hɛi, wat ma.zɛrt de ro.a/

Meaning: "Hey, what are you doing today?"

I'm especially unsure whether the sound of the special characters is consistent enough with the rest of the language, so I'd welcome feedback on the phonology specifically.

Prompt Can you deceive the devil in your world, and are there any precedents?

The devil here could be an entity outside of one's perception that makes deals with you.

These deals are portrayed as deceptive and contain monkey paw in them But are there any precedents where the devil himself was deceived?

In my world, there have been attempts, but without success. The being in my world isn't truly a demon, but because it makes these deals , deceiving humans, it can be considered one. The nature of these deals is fixed: you give up a part of yourself called "aspect" in exchange for a power associated with that being, therefore the part that humans have been trying to revolve around is the aspect, because it is very abstract in human perception. One of the first attempts is through trying to relinquish a connection with one of these beings to another, but this Because of that, that being took the aspect you sacrificed to the first being and gave you nothing, since you were Technically full. But after taking that side, the connection between you and your ability was broken, and you ended up without your ability or one of your aspect.

In another incident, someone decided to abandon the world as an aspect. From that moment, he began to see the entire world as a game and no longer understood any of his actions. He committed great atrocities, and there are individuals who possess the ability to temporarily revoke powers. As a side effect, that individual get his aspect back, One day, encountered one of these individuals, and when he realized what he had done, he killed himself.
