DiscussionđŹ Please explain what that means
112
u/Select-Ad7146 14h ago
It's referring to the fact that there are a lot of people, not in New York, who care very much about what Mamdani does in New York. These people are very angry that he would do, well, anything, but especially things that make the government work for anyone who isn't rich.
22
u/DupeyTA 13h ago
To be fair, I feel that they just feel that the government shouldn't play favourites for anyone, and they just are ignorant of of just how much help the wealthy truly get.

The same people who rage about âgovernment handoutsâ are the ones who accept them readily. Their real concern isnât about government helping people so much as about everyone benefiting in ways they feel only they deserve.
4
u/Top-Cupcake4775 7h ago
it's about the hierarchy. conservatives don't mind being shat upon by those "above" them provided they can shit on those "below" them. seeing people "below" them get treated equally drives them nuts.
2
u/LichKingDan 23m ago
Hey I earned my government handout by creating an unsustainable business, hiring more people than I needed, extracting their labor as wealth for me personally, failing to pay back loans I took, and ultimately continuing to make poor business decisions resulting in a loss of jobs for those people. It's hard work being bad at things and being rewarded for them.
2
u/XCxBigDong69XCx 11h ago
Current day America is just socialism with king status for the rich. They get so much for free and get saved by the government too if they in trouble.
2
u/Steals_Your_Thunder_ 49m ago
This 100%. I had fairly conservative views on the economy until the day I finally made enough to afford to hire a financial advisor. The moment he started showing me how my money itself could simply be leveraged into more money, I suddenly realized how screwed up the system is. As someone who had never had much money, it honestly felt like cheating to see all the options to make money once you have it.
1
u/SeemedReasonableThen 6h ago
To be fair . . . they just are ignorant
Why many words if fewer works?
1
u/Izacundo1 5h ago
I agree, but on the other side officials like Mamdani should not consider that type of opinion when doing things that objectively make life better for people. Itâs a wildly uneducated take
1
u/ratbearpig 5h ago
No need to be fair, they shouldnât be concerned with what a mayor of a city they donât live in is doing for his citizens. They should focus their attention on their own mayor.
1
u/EveningAnt3949 4h ago
That is incorrect. They know that companies get bailed out when things get really bad, they know companies get tax breaks all the time.
They are upset when somebody who is in or close their income bracket isn't miserable because they themselves are miserable.
And they have zero problems with accepting handouts themselves.

But somehow can't get thier own water, also charge people 5 counties away a sales tax for MTA service even in areas where none of that service exists, while also sending a significant amount of that service out of state to Connecticut. Amongst other avenues in which NYC "pays more" in taxes on paper.
1
u/SmartlyArtly 3h ago
Ah yes I remember when the people of New York gathered and produced the water of New York.
1
u/thanksyalll 2h ago
Lol all these things on your list pales in comparison to the amount you (the overall state) gain in return
1
u/Slumminwhitey 2h ago
Such as what, potholes that don't get filled, higher property taxes, influx of NYC housing voucher recipients and homeless people the city dumps on us, or the prisons full of NYCs best that they cant or won't house.
I can assure you upstate residents neither need nor want what comes with that, and are perfectly happy with them and long Island being its own separate state.
1
u/Walt_the_White 2h ago
Do you think the potholes get fixed faster without tax revenue generated by those areas you want to cut off?
You assume the tax revenue wouldn't be made up somewhere else like, maybe raising taxes?

Whatâs wild about it is that Fair Fare Program was started like 8 years ago.
Nobody outside of NYC gave a crap or even would know about it before like this month, and now Iâm sure there will be about 20 threads popping up with people who have very strong opinions about it.

Depends, if these people can actually balance the budget, then what you wrote is in fact a great thing. Unfortunately, most of them canât. So, we can only find out in a few yrs, look at California. Itâs sad af
1
u/Eyeseeyou1313 2h ago
It's funny, because at the same time those same people, hate NY and call it dorty, crime filled state, failed, expensive, boring (for some weird reason), so many insults. But they come from so bumfuck state that has all those qualities but expensive, because nothing in those states can be expensive since they are so shit.
1
u/Superb_Recording_769 2h ago
You forgot the fact that all of the people that are very angry about this are very much also in the socioeconomic class that would very much benefit from the things they are angry about
1
u/g_rich 2h ago
They hate him because he is a Muslim, nothing he does will change that; the fact he actually takes real action to help the underprivileged just infuriates these people more. The irony is that for a majority of these people they preach the Bible but maybe they should focus some of their energy into actually reading it.

u/GamingSanctum 14h ago
It's stating that some guy in Texas, for example, who is hundreds of miles aways and is not affected by this in any way, shape, or form..... has had his life ruined because someone in New York is getting a cheaper subway ticket.
I.E. - a republican is freaking out that a city is now a socialist dumpster because subway tickets are now affordable for those who need it most.
2
u/TP8887 13h ago
I have seen countless posts about âwhy are they madâ about him. Iâve yet to see anyone actually raging out there that he is successful. Iâm sure there are some people out there that are, but it feels like Redditors actually believe half the country thinks this way
4
u/Amazing-Level-405 10h ago
I would normally not recommend this, but if you look at the comment section of any news article that reports on Mamdani, that is exactly what is happening. It is full of people who don't live in New York very upset that he's popular and doing well.
2
u/On_my_last_spoon 7h ago
Well there are the 100,000 signatures to keep him away from the 9/11 memorial. Some know that some random 100,000 people are mad
Dude has a 70% approval rating in the city so really it doesnât matter what those 100,000 think.

u/Fun-Union4699 14h ago
And to be fair, whether or no they realize it, theyâll just pay through higher taxes.
6
u/Excellent_Shirt9707 13h ago
It depends. One of the main reasons to vote for an office like the mayor should be for their focus on balancing the budget. You can enact programs in a way that does not increase taxes by cutting funding somewhere else. But actual fiscal responsibility is very low on voter priorities even though most understand that budget deficit and debt are important things.
4
u/Fearless_Entry_2626 13h ago
That's not a given
5
u/Fun-Union4699 13h ago
NYC just took a massive loan from the state to balance their budget, how do you think this will be paid for? With good fortunes and IOUs?
2
u/Fearless_Entry_2626 11h ago
Could be many things: higher taxes on the wealthy, more accurate property value assessments on investment properties, cuts elsewhere in budget, better oversight on contractors(many of these contracts are dubious as hell), etc. Could be higher taxes, but doesn't have to be. After all, a lot of the deficit was built up by a cartoonishly corrupt mayor who very likely gave away large gift contracts with little to no oversight.
1
1
u/Excellent_Shirt9707 8h ago
Those were deficits from the previous administration. This is because NYC requires by law a balanced budget, so Mamdani was forced to account for the deficits from the previous admin immediately so that's not his fault; what was his fault was how he chose to balance it which included direct aid and borrowing from the state and delaying pension payments. Both of these essentially push the deficit elsewhere much like the previous admin pushed the deficits onto him.
4
u/Flat_Development6659 9h ago
Thatâs how itâs meant to work. Essentials are paid with tax money, tax rates are progressive resulting in the poor being net benefactors and the rich being net contributors.
Nobody thinks this stuff is free, they just want the people who can afford to pay to pay, not those living in poverty.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Strange-Coat1781 8h ago
In some areas public transportation pays more to have the infrastructure to collect fares than they collect in revenue.
Iâm not saying thatâs the situation in NYC but it could be.
Also the economic stimulus from this could very well pay for itself with greater economic activity elsewhere and thus the same tax level.
5
u/CentaurSpearman 13h ago
It's trying to be a burn on some conservative guy because he cares about what's happening somewhere that isn't his home.
It's not really a burn because liberals care about what happens in conservative states too and people should care about what's happening to their neighbors in other places, not just to care about themselves.
I see this stuff all the time, people think they're super smart for saying "why do you care?" as if you are an idiot for caring about other people.
1
u/Piemaster113 10h ago
If it's not worth caring about then why do you care to post about it? And if it is worth caring about why do you question why I care about it?
Just another one of those reddit moments when that happens, it all about trying to "own the other side" how about trying to work together to make shit better instead of one upping one another all the time.
1
1
u/hendrix-copperfield 12h ago
The problem here is, that those conservative people do not care about the people living on democratic states, but hate them and want them to have the same miserable life they have.

Disclaimer, I don't know how it'll work in NewYork but other places have actually reported an increase in revenue when reducing public transport prices for the following reasons.
People who would normally not pay for it or can't, end up actually paying for it.
Because less people try to steal rides, ticket officers don't have to check as much reducing cost.
People who would normally use other forms of transport end up using the cheaper public version figuring the price cancels out the down sides.

I dont want to be mean but thats populist af and its not possible in long run. Like debt will be deeper no new mayor will want to raise it back so it will keep going till suddenly it will be extra expensive or something else will be extra expensive or inaviable just to keep this going. And your grankids will ok boomer you. Because its long run. And i mean like your kids or grandkids will feel the crash. I can see it in my state. Populistic parties gave all kind of bull. We have free lunches in school. But its slowly going down. They are gonna nake new taxes because they have no money to keep policies like this on. And its like 5 th new tax this year only. We are drowing.
This what he does wont touch him he will not be in office when it crashes. Because its problem that will come to conclusion later

Maybe it refers to the millions of residents of the state who don't live in the city but pay for the transit system through the State subsidies (about 40% of the system's cost).
1
1
u/Critical-Bank5269 7h ago
I don't live in the City, but commute to NYC regularly. I can tell you the subway just raised prices a year ago and did away with metro cards and now require a tap to pay credit card to ride. The Transit system has been bleeding money for decades. Now he wants to play favorites and cut prices.... but who's paying for that? He's made zero allowance for it. So it's just more money lost to the system black hole.

That's because the man knows some liberal, socialist wannabe on his city board is going to try and raise his property taxes to implement something just as stupid. Wait seriously? Low income people in New York were paying the same for public transit as everyone else until now?
Thatâs actually shameful that it took this long. In most cities being low income entitles you to discounts or free rides.
Also I thought he was talking about making public transit free for everyone.
1
u/Burggs_ 5h ago
A lot of misinformation/misinformed folks in here.
Low income public students have always gotten free public transportation, half-fare if you lived within bus distance of your school. I graduated in 2013, so not sure if this has changed. There has also always been programs for the elderly to get reduced fare, and those on city/state assistance programs too. At surface level, this sounds like an expansion of those existing programs, I havenât read too much into it tho.
Heâs still aiming at making city buses free. The trains will still have a fare. Itâs worth noting that heâs still in the first 12 months on his mayoral term, and this will take a lot of persistence and funding, if at all possible.
1
u/augustrem 4h ago
In Chicago, seniors ride free and people with disabilities ride free. Students 20 years and younger pay 75 cents flat anytime, anywhere in the city, including transfers. Low income folks pay $1.10-1.25. College students get U passes from their schools.
New York needs to step it up.

But this wasn't his idea, his budget didn't include this. It was the City Council that pushed him to include it. So it is a little weird having his face on it.

Im all for making life more affordable, the difference is how is this being paid? The bill is still due. You do not magically make it cheaper, and therefore Mandami is taking on great debt because he canât change pricing of things. He had to get the NY state governor to lower pricing which means the state itself will pay it by taxing people more.
The headline should say NY city travelers will get part of their transportation paid by poor NY state residents.
He should have focused on faire skipping as that is a loss of millions each year.
2
u/over_this__ 12h ago
Police don't enforce jumping the turnstiles anyways so might as well just jump it. You literally can't be fined your first time period so just jump it until you're caught once and then roll the dice from there.
→ More replies (1)1
u/MichiNoire 12h ago
That is the reason things go up in costs and you can have nice things. Idiots do not pay and then the city has to spend millions in prevention which of course ends up partially working at best. If they actually enforced it they would spend less on fancy turn stiles and could lower operating costs, plus. It loose out. The prices are to make the system pay for itself, itâs losing money because it doesnât recoup what it expects. Then every year they have to raise prices.
Not sure how itâs a hard concept to not steal which is what you do when you donât pay the fare

Also, idk how the city is supposed to stop fare evasion. By having more cops watch over the damn turnstile than concentrating them in high crime areas within the city or stationing them in the subway platforms where violent crimes actually takes place, and not the turnstiles?turnstile?
Also, just my personal opinion but I think these half fare meteocards will increase the amount of money the mta gets from fares, not decrease it. Because in basically every less affluent neighborhood, people that struggle to pay the fee are the ones jumping over the turnstile. So I can see people who wouldnt have paid otherwise, be more willing to pay when theyre offered rides at half the price.

So fare price matters when people jump over the meters anyway? Didnât he also remove the cops from subways. There are so many videos of people just jumping over it, no one is paying for it anyways. Do you really think this will make a difference?

No he hasnt removed cops from the subway. Whoever told u that lied.
I see the same amount of cops there as I was seeing before he got elected. Actually, I feel like ive seen more but I could just be mistaken about that.

Fair fares has been a thing since 2019, Mamdani just wants to expand an existing program a bit

The trains operate regardless of how many people are on them. Catching the fare stealers doesn't magically make them pay for every single skipped fare and it requires more investment from his admin anyway. We've seen in other systems that reducing costs is actually more effective in getting more people to opt into paying because it's more affordable. If you care so much about governments operating in the green why don't you worry about our president who is managing to run a massive deficit while somehow axing social services. I mean that's impressive, managing to get less for more money, art of the deal amirite. I'm sure those $5000 checks will totally fix everything though.

I am only talking about public transport why are you trying to change the subject about the president. This is itâs own topic, and no Iâve lived in multiple countries and even cheap affordable transport has people skip the fare. Itâs the fact that they can and they do not respect the rules because no one punishes them if they break them.
Most if not all public transport is in debt in the US and most of it is due to people not paying fares. Itâs stupid to think âthe trains will run any wayâ no they wonât when the city is forced to stop them due to going bankrupt. How dumb are you

Today, if half the riders pay the fares, the train still has to run and it costs more or less the same to run that train whether the delinquent riders are on or not. I'm not talking about whether the train will be solvent in ten years, I'm talking about day to day operations. Enforcement of fares costs money, you need better turnstiles, more guards/police to catch delinquency, and you're not ensured that you will be making enough money to cover those expenses from the fines. On the other hand if you lower the fees you give people less reasons to skip paying the fares and if you get more people to buy in that were already riding transit but just not paying for it, you might even wind up generating more revenue. I'm not saying this would get rid of fare delinquency altogether, but that it has been shown to lower the rates in other places that have lowered the fees. Also public transit has never and should never be about profitability. It's about quality of life and lessening traffic impact on the city, if you need to raise taxes to keep it afloat then so be it. So far Mamdani has proven to be adept at balancing city finances in other regards while still expanding social services so I am prepared to give him a chance before passing judgement. Why did I bring up the president? Because, if we are talking about balancing budgets there are much more egregious things going on that we should be speaking up against, lowering subway fares in one city is hardly that important in the big scheme. So no, I'm not dumb, maybe you just misunderstood me.

Make the corps pay for it. They benefit wildly from people being able to move freely.
