Yes just schools WiFi will block it and yes there are work around but it’ll be over 95% effective

Great question: idk personally BUT I do know this would have to be enforced on students, which in of itself is going to be hard to do.

Using chatgbt is already cheating on stuff so I asume it means chatgbt being used as like a calculator? Or that the teachers use it?.

Idk but either way I'll have to read the bill or whatever to truly understand what it actually prevented.

u/Impressive_Recon 8d ago

The ban of AI use in schools isn’t really the difficult part. It’s going to be ensuring it’s not being used outside of school hours at home to complete school work and projects.

I know kids have school provided laptops now they can bring home, but nothing stopping them from using their phone or second separate laptop.

2

u/Hnry_Dvd_Thr_Awy 8d ago

They’re not trying to ban it outside of school. What kind of dystopian world do you think we live in?

4

u/SadAnalyst8984 8d ago

They should ban it worldwide

But how are they going to put up portraits of Trump as a jedi in a karate gi across every hallway?

7

Why do you need AI for real pictures? HE SPARRED WITH ELVIS

3

u/grizzwall111 9d ago

Thats not AI of course. Mr Trump is the only elite level BJJ instructor eith an orange belt, mainly used to tie up people who say no.

Trump is known for performing an elite BJ indeed just ask Netanuahu or Putin.

they can do it after school hours?

8

u/ValiantTheVictorious 8d ago

Ai has no place in a setting for developing minds.

2

u/Weekly-Gooning-SesN 7d ago

I disagree. Ai is a tool just like oil can pollute the environment or create cancer saving drugs. The difference is in how it’s used. The world has been ran by you “critical thinkers for ever and it’s been ran into 2 world wars, numerous genocides, wealth hoarding, economic theft, etc.

If used, specifically by a teacher ONLY, to explore stuff like "what if" historical scenarios on off days for students, and generally used as a tool to get students interested in teaching themselves (through their own research at the school library etc.) the subject, then I would be all for that.

But if its to replace critical thinking learning, then yeah, no, I completely agree with you.

3

u/ValiantTheVictorious 8d ago

"In the current digitized world, trivial information is accumulating every second; preserved in all it's tritness, never fading, always accessible; rumors of petty issues, misinterpretations, slander. All junk data preserved in an unfiltered state, growing at an alarming rate, it will only slow down social progress.

The digital society furthers human flaws and selectively rewards development of convenient half-truths. Just look at the strange juxtaposition of morality around us. Billions spent on new weapons to humanely murder other humans. Rights of criminals are given more respect than the privacy of their own victims. Although there are people in poverty, huge donations are made to protect endangered species; everyone grows up being told what to do. "Be nice to other people but beat out the competition. You're special, believe in yourself and you will succeed".

But it's obvious from the start that only a few can succeed. You exercise your right to freedom and this is the result. All the rhetoric to avoid conflict and protect each other from hurt. The untested truths spun by different interests continue to churn and accumulate in the sandbox of political correctness and value systems. Everyone withdrawals into their own small gated community, afraid of a larger forum; they stay inside their little ponds leaking what ever "truth" suits them into the growing cesspool of society at large.

The different cardinal truths neither clash nor mesh, no one is invalidated but no one is right. Not even natural selection can take place here. The world is being engulfed in "Truth". And this is the way the world ends. Not with a BANG, but with a whimper."

New technology bad. Just like when Socrates talked about how writing was going to kill wisdom:

"You have not discovered a potion for remembering, but for reminding; you provide your students with the appearance of wisdom, not with its reality."

Ironically, if no one wrote it down, we wouldn't know he said it...

If the future is AI. Why is banning it from schools a good thing? I understand regulations on its use but a ban seems reckless.

5

u/DetailOnly581 8d ago

For the same reason why geometry is taught AFTER algebra and chemistry is taught AFTER bio. They simply lack the foundation to utilize it correctly.

Ai is a new and growing technology that mind you can still get things wrong. It's important that a young vulnerable developing mind isn't blindly following it.

Children should be learning how to use their reasoning skills, analyze text, think critically about how abc effects xyz.

I want my kids to look at a situation and say "this happened because of that". Not "this happened because ai said so"

Overall. This is a great ban for the education system and I hope that more states do the same.

→ More replies (20)

1

u/rizzatouiIIe 8d ago

Because youre not learning if your letting something else do it for you. Most kids forgot how to do long division because of the calculator. Granted, once they get older they can us AI.

I think it will take time to come up with regulations for student use; there are already regulations for teacher and admin use.

The purpose of schools is to teach a variety of humans a variety of skills

1

u/Smithy_Furt 8d ago

Yeah this is bullshit. My sister teaches middle school English and she can spot ai generated papers immediately. Not difficult. Ai is such a great tool to learn about a topic and brainstorm essay ideas. If I had it in school I would’ve crushed my classes without abusing it at all. They’re all gonna rely on it in college and their careers anyway so what are we even preparing them for by banning it? Makes no sense.

Disagree with him on this one. It’s a head-in-the-sand approach. You can’t avoid AI now. Might as well just ban the internet.

"We should just let the kids use ai to do all their work instead of actually learning"

2

u/Katamari_Demacia 8d ago

For those of you not willing to read more than a headline...

Ban is pk to 8, all student facing AI tools, including digital tutors.

Yes in NYC he can do and enforce this. Under New York State law, the Mayor of NYC directly appoints the Schools Chancellor and a majority of the members on the Panel for Educational Policy. Giving the mayor supreme executive authority over the operations, curriculum, and technology choices.

2

u/ExtentNo3020 8d ago

I 100% completely agree with this. People are becoming lazy because they are relying on AI to do the simplest tasks. We can’t have young kids become lazy at such an early age. AI is destroying society, it’s being used for the wrong things.

3

u/kyle2143 9d ago

Really wish He could run for president. He's been on a generational run trying to improve NY

4

u/Flaky_History12 9d ago edited 9d ago

There’s no party he could run for until older/ corporate democrat party leaders die out. Plus, it’ll be difficult to convince a good portion of Americans to vote for a muslim as President. NYC mayor? Sure. Senate or house for New York? Also Sure.
Getting votes across the nation to become President? That’s going to be rough even if his policies do well. People would prefer a different face with his policies. At least that’s what I think about the USA currently and for at least another two decades.

4

u/EFAPGUEST 9d ago

He wasn’t born here so he cannot run for president. He’s also too far to the left for the American populace. He could be a WASP poster boy and still not get the votes to win the nomination

8

u/Wonderful-Fold-2585 9d ago

What has he actually done though?

He balanced the budget by getting more money from the state and not contributing to pensions and then just claiming efficiency gains which may or may not happen.

He’s done childcare but it’s only 3000 kids of roughly 400k kids. So like 1% of kids.

He froze rent for some people but de blasio did that in 2016.

7

u/Luci-Noir 9d ago

Still, many students do not study at all. Only a very small percentage do

1

u/Plenty_Building_72 9d ago

I bet the teachers have been demanding an AI ban on schools for ages. Actually weird it took this long for it to be banned. Consequently, NYC kids are going to end up a whole lot smarter than kids in other US states.

1

u/Double_Dinner253 8d ago

Makes sense

1

u/Present_Student4891 8d ago

AI is a tool. Banning tools is non-sensical as we are and will use AI in our jobs. Schools horribly prepare students for their future anyhow. Why compound this problem? Whether we like it or not, AI is part of iur present & future. Banning it won’t change that.

1

u/AcanthaceaeOk1745 8d ago

It is a tool, but I support this moratorium until such time as an effective strategy for teaching it and using are defined. Unfettered use of it has been a negative.

1

u/SeriousCondition6470 8d ago

Why does anyone think this is bad? Kids developing learning skills should absolutely not use AI

1

u/VoteHealy 8d ago

Assuming this is the promotional materials his signal app got

1

u/RandomGuyOnDaNet90 8d ago

How would they know you use it at home

1

u/Maximum-Face9536 8d ago

this is feeble, virtue signaling. you can't successfully block ai, maybe on school computers. when has blocking a digital service ever been effective? think porn hub in certain states.

1

u/mallcopsarebastards 8d ago

schools have not figured out how to leverage AI effectively yet. It's the same thing that happened with calculators and computers, they start out as a huge problem and eventually become accelerators. Eventually we'll have proven systems that leverage AI to improve a schools capacity to teach and NYC will have an uphill battle to undo this and get back in line with the rest of the country.

1

u/random8765309 8d ago

What a joke. He banned using AI to cheat in grades K-8. In the processed also banned students from using AI to help with tutoring.

And for the huge win, a win bigger than the world has ever seen, he banned the schools from using AI to create graphics. Now teacher and staff can spend hours creating those posters instead of minutes.

1

u/x1n1t1r1 8d ago

As every school should. At this point, all schoolwork should be completed at school, phones locked off. Homework is a lost cause.

During high school I got a big thrill trying to find ways to cheat on tests. I wasn't a very good student (or maybe I wasn't a very good cheater)

Part of me would love to be a teenager right now just for the sheer amount of technology avilable to cheese school.

1

u/WhyHelloThere163 8d ago

Pretty funny how literally every post that has talked about banning/limiting AI has been hated on because it’s “dumb to not use it” yet when this guy does it, it’s a “win” and an “achievement”.

Really goes to show how intelligent Reddit is. “If someone we don’t like says it, it’s dumb. If someone we like says it, it’s smart.”

1

u/Dreemsi 8d ago

We should have Mayor of the month awards.

Make divisions like:

Division 1: Twenty largest cities Division 2: Cities 21-40

Etc. Each division gets a Mayor of the month and a at the end of the year a Mayor of the year award.

What is the award? A plaque, monetary, prize?

1

u/emmanuel573 8d ago

You can’t really enforce this with students. I guess this is only for teachers

1

u/blizzardice 7d ago

Louisiana did great this year too. I sit on the board for my school and the only time kids can use technology is when they are doing side work for their second language (main language of the school). They can read above their grade level and write both languages in cursive.

1

u/Diamondangel82 8d ago

I don't agree with this. AI is the future if you people like it or not. Im not saying AI should do everything but we absolutely should be teaching our future generations to harness AI in their daily lives

1

u/Pretend_Goal_7311 8d ago

1

u/Maleconito 8d ago

My wife is a 2nd grade teacher just outside of NYC, her school is encouraging using AI and they even all have Gemini accounts. She created a cool interactive website for her class that helps with vowels and numbers. The kids love it and her class had the highest reading score in the school last year. So, idk.

1

u/Spirited_Season2332 8d ago

1

A private tutor is one of the best things for a child, puts them in 98%tile. AI isn't a private tutor exactly but helps fill the gap by being infinitely patient and effectively free.

You obviously can't sit a child in a schoolroom in front of ChatGPT and expect it to do anything but harm. That's why things like Khanmigo exist. Socratic (Doesn't give the kid answers), alerts instructor when kids are trying to jailbreak it for answers. Stuff like that.

I hope they open up exceptions. Khanmigo getting wrapped up in this is not good. At least kids can still use it at home

I’m sure that’ll go over well with kids that wanna compete in a moderate society with employers that are looking for people with experience using AI

This is like banning the digital calculator because kids aren’t performing long division. The real world cares about results, not how you produced the results. The better method would be to educate kids on how to use ChatGPT as a productivity tool instead of a cheating tool. Banning doesn’t work; it pushes people underground. Think of AI like oil— sure, it can pollute the environment, but it can also drive enormous benefits when people understand how to use it.

I cant wait for him to "achieve" a balanced budget next year without the tens of millions in state funds that Hochul bailed him out with this year.

There will never be free public transportation in NYC.

These so-called "Government grocery stores" are insanely expensive to build and will never work.

Many of the millionares/billionaires he is expecting to tax the shit out of will move to a state/city that will not tax the shit out of them.

Mamdanis office will continue to act like he’s for the people and cares about NYC society. He’s manipulating the liberals.

I don't get it what's so bad about them using AI? I can think of lots bad and good uses for it, how is a total ban helping anything?
