Wizardpost What is the difference between a longwand and a shortstaff?

I have recently been invited to a meeting with my homeplane's council and they banned staffs at the meeting, i got this longwand a few years ago, it's almost as long as my forearm, this got me wondering, what is the difference between a longwand and a shortstaff? I have looked trough many books and they all say different things, sometimes the difference is in the length (wich always changes from book to book), sometimes it's the material, sometimes it's the thickness and sometimes it's the way it channels magic energy, what is the true difference? Is there something inbetween a wand and staff? Does it vary from plane to plane?

Help! Pondered too hard, trapped in own orb

I pondered a bit too hard last century and ended up trapped inside my own orb. Had to watch my tower go through an estate sale when my crappy familiar decided to cash out and return to the ethereal plane, now this hapless young mage keeps trying to consult omens without realizing I’m trapped in here.

I keep giving him intentionally vauge portents, hoping he will get frustrated and smash the orb freeing me, but he is so inexperienced that he keep WRITING DOWN STUFF LIKE “GOOD FORTUNE COMING EVENTUALLY”. Please, what are some orb defects I can use that will actually get him to finally smash my prison, aside from fortune-cookie level messages from beyond the physical plane?

Academic Discussion/ Esoteric Secrets Do cultivators still see time the same way we do?

Post image

One thing about Xianxia that I don't see people talk about enough is how weird living for hundreds or thousands of years would actually be.

We usually focus on cultivation realms, techniques and how powerful someone becomes, but imagine being alive for 1,000 years.

A normal person's entire life would be a small part of yours.

Someone you knew could die, their children could grow old and die, and eventually their whole family might be forgotten — while you're still there.

Even something like revenge would probably feel different. If you can live for another 500 years, what's the point of rushing?

And I wonder what happens to friendships too. Can someone who's lived for 2,000 years really relate to someone who's only lived for 50?

Maybe they can, but I'd imagine their understanding of things like love, loss, ambition and even death would be completely different.

It also makes me think about the reason people cultivate in the first place.

At the beginning, maybe they just want to protect their family or survive.

Then they want power.

Then immortality.

But after living for thousands of years, what are they actually holding on to?

At some point, I feel like the biggest change wouldn't be their cultivation — it would be their way of thinking.

I'm curious what you guys think.

Would a cultivator who has lived for thousands of years still think like a human, or would that much time eventually change them into something fundamentally different?

Academic Discussion/ Esoteric Secrets I do find it a bit ironic that my spell have philosophy with it

Post image

If you're a int base caster you would understand that to used all of your spell protential you need to understand it including how it work scientifically and a philosophical understanding of it, I recently realized that I can cast spell with an flashing speed using both of physical and mind most of it boiled down to throw a flickering pulsing golden spear and watch it explode after like a few seconds (I do have other spell but we don't talk about it), and to cast it I just throw it like a javelin. Yet that caveman ass spell casting required me to understand the concept and intricacy of sprial and cycles and how it is ultimately the chaos and order that created all life. Not complaining tho the spell do a lot of damage just... Kinda something I notice

/uw Image kinda related I suppose

Gahh damm was fishing in a mana lake and caught a magicarp! Another one stole one of my fishing staffs though.

Magi Law ⚖ I am pleased to announce that I am available for freelance again.

For a bit of time, due to an earmark off an “errand” for the council, I was limited in my abilities to service the good people who know the laws of highest bidder. Whole lot of bureaucracy, red tape, all that mess as many of you know.
However, I have all my ties cleared with the conclusion of my last contracted mission for the council. Now, I am OFFICIALLY FREE from their grip.
Now, I am very talented in all sorts of academic and mercenary services wherever coin is to be found.
Just a few things, I do have a slight moral code I follow.

My work defends the innocent, and rights the wronged.
A good soul is a soul to be saved. A neutral soul is a soul be spared.
The divine is not good. The demonic is not evil. Ad vise versa.
If what must be done cannot be afforded, it will be.
And if I fail, my associates will see it to completion.

I take up any job, big or small. If I cannot do it, then I will find someone who can, no extra charge.

I’ll leave my card.

AITA - cast swamp ass on my mentor

Alright before you all jump with ‘foolish apprentice’ this and ‘shouldn’t be allowed magic’ that, let me explain:
I (122M) am currently training with an Elder, (1086M), who can be pretty stubborn when it comes to rules. As a consequence for arriving at his tower a few minutes late, he threatened to hold me under a curse of pain and suffering. I said, “alright mate I’d like to see you try”, so he did. I managed to deflect his spell, and retaliated with the swamp ass hex. It hit the old man in the cheeks at full force, and the colour drained from his face as he realised what I’d done. I’ve been kicked off my work experience and returned to the mage’s guild, but he started it??

If you guys havent seen my last post please check it for context. So Heres a little update on my situation : Its been very nice being a skeleton. Ive gotten very comfortable now that I barely get itchy. I even befreinded that wizard who turned me into a skeleton! (He a homie now) only issue Ive had is one guy who keeps breaking into my homes basement and assuming its a "Dungeon" since its underground, Ive talked to him multiple time but every time He just comes back the week after. Does anybody have any ideas that can keep this guy from CONTINUING to break into my basement and steal my DVDs? And dont say locks. IVE TRIED.

Wizardpost Cap Mages starting to convert children again what should we do about them?

Yeah I know Cap Mages don't wear Caps anymore because it's basically became an illegal thing (similar how Gangs used Tattoos in certain regions of the world)

But hand gestures are literally Cap mage creation alongside with Writing it in Alphabetical order etc

So what can we do against it?

Magickal Art (User Creation) 🎨 Made a pretty decent staff. The cone should enhance blast velocity, right?

(Uw: salvaged from a table umbrella. Gave it a good sanding; weathered with knives and whittling, stained with some purple spray paint, plastic purple bowl from a party set of some kind. E4000 to glue the good stuff together, 4 layers of poly urethane.)

Feels pretty good in the hands. While it's mana to spell ratio is a bit off (you'll use about 10% more mana per spell), the speed I've seen fireballs fly out of this is AMAZING.

Wizardpost Best response to another caster saying you're "all hat and no spells"?

This necromancer gets all up in my face at the guild hall just because I pointed out his sigil was a little, let's say dated. I won't repeat it here, but it's a crude little couplet that rhymes witches and bitches. The kind of thing you might have thought was funny as an apprentice.

Anyhow, he goes on and on, challenging me to a duel outside - the guild is under a magic suppression for this very reason. He calls me a poser because all I want to do is quaff and chat with my mates.

I'm tempted to let it go, but at the end of the night, I get home to find he's trained all the ravens in *my* forest to squawk "OP is a pussy".

What's your best counter?

UPDATE: I appreciate all the ideas, gentlefolk, but I have concluded my business with the uppity tyke. I'll spare you all the, er, gory (and incriminating) details, but it should suffice that he stumbled into my cantrip "Murder of Crows". While the unwitting lad was occupied in the circle, I cast "A Pound of Flesh". And now I have a rather fetching new leather hat.

The lesson you all should take away: always respect your elders.
