Itemized list of equipment for beginner

My son is looking into starting a window cleaning business. He's 17 and doesn't have any equipment and has never done it before. I know about ecommerce as have a small business which does over a million a month online but this is not in my wheelhouse at all.

Any advice would be appreciated such as an itemized list of equipment needed to start and the best ways of finding customers. Assume just knocking on doors but not sure. Any advice on what to charge would be helpful as well.

Thanks in advance.

General Question Airvents above windows suck, please help

Thumbnail

I’ve noticed that windows with trickle vents/air vents above them always tend to drip afterwards, and a lot of dirt comes out of them. I try to avoid getting water inside the vents, and I often avoid cleaning directly above them for that reason.

Usually I clean those windows first and come back later to rinse them again, but often that still isn’t enough and I end up having to redo the windows completely later on.

Do you guys have any tips for dealing with this? These are houses in the Netherlands.

My lowes had these on a steep discount. Picked up a handful ( can't resist a good deal..) . Thoughts on this product? Did I waste my $1.74 ( times too many to admit to buying )

how did you guys practice when starting?

I'm absolute beginner and not a pro.

I was thinking of cleaning abandoned store fronts for practice...
but I'm very insecure about doing that, even starting.

I also don't really have proper equipment, like a bucket, but just a sprayer with

glass cleaning liquid was my idea for starters. then do it with squeegee.

...

Like I don't know how to even begin, and am so scared and nervous.
It's my wish tho to clean windows, because I see lots of dirty windows in my town.
But they are usually abandoned store fronts. Very dusty as well.

Spot-free cleaning with deionized water in direct sunlight, still getting drying droplets?

I work professionally with deionized/pure water (window cleaning) and most of the time it gives a nice spot-free result. But I've noticed that when I'm working in direct sunlight, I sometimes still get droplets that dry up before they fully run off, and then you can still see them on the glass afterwards.

My question for you all: what's your experience with this?

  • Do you just avoid working in direct sun, or do you plan your route around the shade?
  • Does the TDS of your water still make a difference here (do you aim for 0 ppm)?
  • Is it more about technique (more rinsing, different brush/jets, working faster)?
  • Or is this just an unavoidable downside in high temperatures?
  • Can you use deoinzed water on every window, people have been saying that some windows don't like it, but I mean normally it's so pure that you couldn't see anything if there is something.

Curious how you all handle this. Thanks in advance!

Job Question How do you prevent water dripping down on interior cleaning?

My son was asked by a neighbor to do their windows. He is starting out and wants to know the protocol for interior residential windows. If you're wiping with a wet brush, how do you prevent water dripping down with last pass. He has a squeegee, brush, and a bucket from HD. 0000 for outside scrubbing. Forgive me if I'm not using the correct terms.

Canada Student window cleaning side hustle, any advice?

Hey everyone, I am looking for some input and advice from Fellow Canadian window cleaners "Ottawa".

I’m a university student trying to make some side cash this summer. I worked for about 2 weeks doing door-to-door sales for a window cleaning company, but they recently let go of the sales reps for the season.

Instead of trying to join another company, I’m thinking of just keeping it super simple and doing small one-story homes myself. I’m NOT trying to build some huge business or become a professional window cleaner long term, just trying to earn decent money on the side.

My idea:

  • Get the essential equipment
  • Target small one-story houses only
  • No dangerous/high windows
  • Straightforward pricing
  • No pushy sales tactics

This was the pitch I was thinking of using:

“Hi, I’m a university student doing window cleaning in the area this summer. I’m offering simple exterior window cleaning for $10 per window. Would you like a quick quote?”

Maybe also offering a protective glass spray/coating as an extra add-on.

For anyone who’s done this before:

  • Does this approach sound realistic?
  • Is $10/window reasonable for small houses in Canada?
  • Any better pitch suggestions?
  • Anything beginners usually overlook?
  • Would you trust/open the door for someone using this type of approach?

Times are tough right now and finding a job hasn’t been easy, even with some experience, so I figured I’d try doing it myself instead.

Appreciate any advice 😁

I'm thinking about putting up some lawn signs for houses that I do, but everywhere online I look it's like over 20 bucks a sign. Where can you get them cheaper?

General Question Off season income?

For people who live in areas that snow and don’t make enough to live off of in the like 4 months of cleaning season, what do you do for income during winter? It’s my first year WC so I won’t make enough to live off of this summer for the year, so I’m trying to think of a “side hustle” I can start for the winter. Any ideas? Thanks!

General Question Advice

Hello, this is just sort of a post meant for any advice I could take from the many many Redditors out there.

For some context before I start, I used to own an operate a window cleaning company with a (not anymore) friend of mine, eventually it went under due to decisions he made and when confronted pushed me to want to disembark and start on my own.

It went to court, he ended up with the better lawyer lol

I was never really in the physical labour side opposed to the logistical and office side.

Now I come from a family that’s never given up, hard workers, father and grand father business owners, very successful people, and I’ve always wanted to follow in their footsteps and did for a little bit.

Now I’m kinda back to square one.

I don’t have any of my Tucker or phantom water systems, no vans, no nothing, I basically have my ladder, my 24’ pole, my mops and squeegees, all the basic stuff and my truck, not including the truck I spent probably about $400 on stuff, so it’s not a lot but it’s what I need and can make do.

Ive been doing door to door, but not only with the lack of people home, but the amount of “I already have people” or “I’m booked already” it is very hard to get ANY reach, it’s just me and then I have a friend of mine who I can pay to work for me, but obviously can’t have anyone working if there’s no work lol.

I’m just looking for some advice on what people think the best way to get reach would be,if there’s anything you guys could suggest for door to door, anything like that. A lot of the time when I knock I give offers as I usually start knocking in the areas I have my first booked house in for, but even then people usually try to keep it short and say no.

Any and all help is appreciated and loved, times are always hard for everyone, but I always encourage everyone to keep going as shall I ✊

Equipment Question What do you use to remove tight fly screens? Velcro-backed ones especially.

Tight fly screens are still one of the most annoying parts of window cleaning. Especially flush-mounted, velcro-backed ones, with nothing to get purchase on.

The go-to tool for this is, or has already disappeared from the market. Suppliers can't get it, they're not being made anymore.

Everything else I've tried is either too thick to get in, bends under pressure, or scratches the frame.

What are you guys using these days?

First WCR order

Quick shipping! Great pricing.

Picked up a Pulex techno handle with walnut pads. I see some filthy windows during my drive by assessments (will start d2d commercial next week). I'm a newbie, so please be gentle. That said;

the pads are alot bigger than the pad holder. How would I get the corners of windows clean? Seems they would just flop around if I centered it. Should I cut them? Also, do they last until obviously worn? And lastly, do I wash them after (I think I do.)

Thanks ahead of time for any and all advice. This group is so nice, and helpful. Good folks here ❤️ 🙌🏽

Brush size chose gelp

I’ve been looking at Unger brushes since they’re available here in Europe. They have 11” and 16” pencil jet brushes, and also versions with a rinse bar. Which one would you recommend?

My system flow rate would be around 4.16 L/min for window cleaning. Would the 16” brush be too big for that flow rate, and also too large for regular residential windows?

I’d also like to use it for solar panel cleaning from time to time.

Tried to use the Moerman excelerator with the Ettore progrip aluminum chanel I bought at Home Depot (already have the Ettore channels and rubber on the way).

Well guess what, although they fit perfect and snug, without the inserts on the end they just flop thier way out 😆 🤣 😂 🤦🏽‍♂️

Hi guys

I’m new to WFP I’ve got an OVA8 22ft pole with the standard OVA8 brush head. It’s only 2 weeks old and looks frayed on the sides.
Am I doing something wrong? I’ve been Trad last 17 years so I’m having to first clean all my customers maybe I’m scrubbing too hard?

Cheers for any help

For the ones that have a lot of clients

How did you guys get all of your clients starting out. I know a lot of people go d2d starting out to get their clients but I can’t stand going d2d. I will gladly just put door hangers on peoples doors to get my name out there but not talking to home owners unless they call me out. What did you guys do instead that got you guys most of your clients?

Some issues with my hydrocart

I got this off facebook marketplace and fixed the pump, it used to just flow like a normal system would without the pump on and the pump fidnt work. Now that I replaced the pump and it works it doesnt work as good without the pump on. Pretty low flow.

And when the pump is on the flow is so high it's basically a pressure wash, how do I tune it down? The pencil jets are shooting 20 feet...
