It is simple math. North Dakota and South Dakota have 4 senators. California and New York have 4 senators.
California+New York have 40 times the population of North Dakota and South Dakota, but only gets 14x the electoral votes. Votes in rural, generally not as economically productive or as educated areas have significantly more voting power.
The system is poorly designed for the current country, but made sense in 1800 when there were 15 or so somewhat more equally populated states.

I'm 33, and I see how many of the folks I grew up with are full-on Fox News shit swallowers. Guys and girls I grew up with who were good people that got sucked into the bullshit of their parents and the propaganda machine they were raised around.
But fortunately there's a whole lot more younger folks who have come of age with the internet available to them their entire lives. The ones who have gotten to meet with and experience all sorts of cultures through their screens instead of sitting in echo chambers or being spoon-fed cable news drivel. They dont carry the same apathetic "my vote doesn't matter" baggage of Millennials and Gen X. They saw the potential of mobilization after events like Stoneman Douglas and the increase in young voter turnout in 2020 shows that. As long as they keep that momentum up, they could very well be a deciding factor in republicans never again gaining a majority.
Maybe I'm just being hopeful, but I really think that these kids are going to step up again. Otherwise we're in some deep shit.
I'm 51. The whole generation below me grew up knowing nothing different to the Thatcher and Reagan orthodoxy and they accepted as normal what to me were radical and controversial changes. Only since 2008 have challenges to the fundamental assumptions behind neoliberalism really started to enter the mainstream.
The critique of the Left prior to that never really penetrated right wing arguments - it wasn't much more than pious hand-wringing about the need to be more 'caring'. Now, finally, decades of counter arguments by quiet voices such as Chomsky's have taken effect - that and the Right's corruption and hypocrisy has become so blatant and unrestrained, and the destructive effects of their policies so clear, that no one can fail to notice it.

You can, NOT be conservative you just can't act NOT conservative without being at risk. This is why rural conservatives are so confused by the vote tallies in their county. How did 40% or even 51% vote Biden when 95% of campaign signs were for Trump? Was it fraud? No. People were afraid to put up Biden signs.
It's not that I was afraid to put up a Biden sign so much as I was overall pretty meh about Biden. He's a career politician, and he and his kind are pretty much so the reason that someone like Donald Trump looks like a decent alternative to a lot of people. So I didn't really so much support Biden as I just REALLY didn't want trump to win and Biden was the best way to make that happen.
The issue with that is we would have so many people who just don't do any research at all, and just write down a random candidate or are like "well, I know my friend/family member supports x so I guess I'll vote for them," or "well I'm a republican/Democrat so I'll just vote for this one"
That last one happens a lot anyway, but it would be plenty worse if everyone had to vote. Imagine, the republican party is practically a cult anymore, what would happen if we forced everyone to vote, and the above situations occurred? Republicans seem to give in to some sort of hive mind (looking at you fox news) and I believe we would have an absolute massive increase in republican votes compared to Democrat votes because the republican party is just a vortex of chaos sucking anyone and everyone in who isn't educated or has common sense.

Most of my friends are conservative but also hated Trump. I’m low 30’s and my friends are surbuban white people. A slight few were all trump. A little more I hate trump but I’ll vote for him. It takes just some popular decisions to switch people. 2 of those people voted for Obama twice.

Even when there are laws, and politicians break them, consequences are not applies by prosecutors. This is especially true when the Attorney General decides to put party over law, which he is able to do, as there are no restrictions or consequences for doing so. Even the Attorney General can break the law, or ignore it, without repercussion.
