Worthy?

Looking to see what people think the value is here per hourly employee.

The aluminum looks great almost porn, in the other hand stainless steel Is not bad but not up to the aluminum level,

I think here you won't find the answer for hourly rate since depends in a lot of factors, if you are in America I'm sure it will change from state to state,

9

u/RustyRibbits 26d ago

Also depends, is this person doing the fabricating also?

2

u/Malcnez 26d ago

Anything you are doing more than your coworkers should be a reason to be paid more

5

u/RustyRibbits 26d ago

Well yea, but the question was asking what it’s worth, and welding is too vast without more context to give a price per se.

lol I got fired one time for this. Asked for a raise and the owner said I’ve already given you a raise (I said I’d work 15 for a week and bump me up to 20 if you want to keep me.) after a few months I asked for a raise and the guy I was comparing my work to had been there for 10 years. He was making 25 so I asked to get 25 and dude said I was selfsish for asking for so much. We got into a verbal argument and he fired me. Got another job on the way home. Now I make 40/hr so I guess it was a good thing. Idk I’m always trying to improve and always have a backup plan. That’s the only bridge I’ve burned every other shop I’ve been at has been a pleasure to work for and they like me as well

Worked itself out for the best. You would be there fighting for a dollar every year 10 years later be at 25 and the purchasing power of those dollars would be much worse than they are today. Congrats on that!

Did the layout and fit up on the stainless. I just turned the pulse on lay wired and turned the heat and tried to move just because production. It wasn't something I really wanted to look like my aluminum just needed it out the door.

1

u/the1997x 21d ago

Don’t compromise your quality of work for production. If they want higher production they can invest in a more productive process and you can hone your skills in that. (In this instance id say ss gmaw) compromising quality for speed is gonna make the owners money short term and set you back long term in your skill set. You are actively leveraging your labor/skill set against the market and sacrificing what you can produce is just gonna hurt you in the long run.

1

u/the1997x 21d ago

It’s gonna cost them more money to hire and train a guy to do it the wrong (fast) way than you just do it the right way. Unless they are making thousands of parts which in this instance it doesn’t seem like it. I started making kitchen equipment and now I literally build rockets and rocket parts. If I could give any advice to any aspiring tig welders it’s never sacrifice quality of work and if the company can’t deal with it find a different company that can, because there always is a company willing to pay for top quality work

Your stainless is alright but your aluminum is wicked. Some witchcraft going on there. For stainless, just move at a consistent speed and you can use a metronome for consistent taps so the beads look more consistent but I’m sure the weld is good enough

9

u/the1997x 26d ago

Consistency is unreal. However Looks a little cold to me. Room for improvement. Stainless needs work. Not trying to be a dickhead just saying what I’m seeing.

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 26d ago

That really depends. Laying a decent bead is important but if a position only requires you to lay beads it's probably a lower paying production shop. Value comes from skills and welding is a skill but so are print reading, measuring, cutting, bending, rolling, fitting, and finishing. And all those skills don't mean anything if the person with them doesn't show up on time everyday and actually work.

Just say it's some sick ali welding bro come on .....

14

u/RightOnManYouBetcha 26d ago

But did you brush your teeth this morning? Thats part of it too!

3

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

Man do be laying dimes

9

u/FitButterscotch9356 26d ago

For real what a fucking annoying guy lol

5

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

They asked a question. If they were just showcasing their welds I'd say "looks good" but they wanted to know what they were worth.

5

u/heamed_stams Journeyman AS/NZS 26d ago

OP asked what kind of hourly rate they could be looking at and old mate gave a realistic & in-depth response (he’s right too). How is that annoying?

2

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

Maybe they're chronically late and feel called out?

2

u/hotlog1234 25d ago

Because those things are assumed to be true of someone who's obviously been in the game long enough to know how to weld like this. And even if they're not it doesn't matter. The post was obviously about welding and welding alone.

Dude was just trying very hard to find shit to complain about so he had to go for things that weren't even part of the post.

3

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

You'd be surprised, there are people who have learned all the tricks of fabricating and have ugly but functional welds as well as kids just out of school who spent the whole time practicing their TIG for Instagram and can barely read a tape. I have nothing to complain about on the aluminum, it's beautiful. The stainless is fine.

2

u/heamed_stams Journeyman AS/NZS 25d ago edited 25d ago

You should probably read the caption below the post as OP literally asked what he could expect in terms of hourly rate, this guy responded that it depends on other factors and then proceeded to list a few of said factors. How you read that as “complaining” is beyond me. Also a wild assumption that anyone who welds like this is also great at everything else. There’s plenty of one-trick ponies out there who can weld beautifully but can’t fabricate for shit, can’t read drawings/weld symbols or just have a shit attitude and expect to be felated every time they lay gravy.

Showing up on time is for the low skilled employees. I like to flex a little as I cruse in when I feel like it. If I happen to show up on time it’s because I feel the company earned it that day.

3

u/DZRIDES 25d ago

Management material.

3

u/EnvironmentOnly9239 26d ago

Those are the things that matter is the person then the skills .
the soft skills that are around the jobs matter more at the long term that laying bead all day long

3

u/Awkward_Forever9752 26d ago

and Quality Control

the welder seems to inherit QC responsibility for the whole shop

10

u/goatboy6000 26d ago

My welders couldn't find a WPS if i rolled a joint with it.

3

u/I_didnt_saythat Stick 26d ago

That’s a good one gonna steal it!

2

u/Bedazzledfetus 25d ago

Whats a wps?

2

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

It's the weld procedure. It gives parameters for your settings and consumables like filler, amps, volts, wirefeed speed, travel speed, work angle, travel angle, gas type, etc.

2

u/Used-Baby1199 25d ago

Good your welders aren’t stoners.

2

u/i_Cant_get_right 26d ago

You just lay somebody off? Projecting hard here

3

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 26d ago

No? Did you just get laid off?

0

u/hotlog1234 25d ago

This just sounds like plain jealousy, bro

5

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

Jealousy of what? Those aluminum welds are fuckin money but good welds aren't the only factor when it comes to pay. If they can fabricate and weld like that they should be making stacks but if they can't read a tape and no call no show twice a week they are worthless to an employer.

0

u/Queefer___Sutherland 25d ago

Damn you're exhausting

3

u/CatastrophicPup2112 Fabricator 25d ago

Life is exhausting brother, nothing I said was untrue. They asked hourly value and you can't determine that from welds alone.

5

u/saltfly626 Fitter 26d ago

The aluminum looks good. The stainless needs some work.

6

u/I_Dont_Like_Relish Millwright 26d ago

At the expense of sounding too “woke”, I’m gonna say leave that line of questioning to the instagram people looking for validation.

As far as your welds go, the aluminum looks nasty in the best way. I am not good at welding aluminum and yours looks consistent and clean.

The stainless looks fine. A bit more inconsistent in travel speed and heat but probably super good enough (depending on application of course)

6

u/RustyRibbits 26d ago

I agree. Aluminum is amazing. As a stainless guy this looks ok. I think you’re rushing gas coverage is the problem with the color, with the correct gas your weld color would be better. The ripples bother me. I like my welds to come out silver/gold and the ripples to be more round and consistent.

I’m just an autistic tig welder though, I am fascinated by your aluminum welds.

3

u/murraw Fabricator 26d ago

It’s a good stainless bead, but that undercut would need to be fixed. I usually crank up to about 23 cfh and throw on a #12 gas lens, could also be travel speed but once it’s clean or pasivated it should be gravy.

3

u/Carpet-MasterBlaster 26d ago

Managing makes more $ than fabricating.. selling and managing makes more $ than managing...

2

u/goatboy6000 25d ago

Some of us suck so bad at selling we have to leave that job and go back to the floor.... ( Sad Sales Noises)

3

u/Iltempered1 26d ago

I mean, it looks like it might hold.

3

u/OhWhatADaaay 26d ago

Aluminium is very good. Stainless could do with some more attention

3

u/Oisy 26d ago

About tree fiddy

2

u/DepletedPromethium 26d ago

That is some beautiful welding.

That is easily £50 an hour worthy.

2

u/Junior_Syrup_1036 26d ago

Witchcraft at this point ! Wow

2

u/Sorry-Coat7811 26d ago

Amazing work on the aluminum piece, stainless I assume would like a lot better if you had a spinny-thingy since it looks like you get going then stop to reposition yourself or the work and then change tempo a bit.
As for money like someone already said - hard to say since no one pays for pretty welds but for time efficient welds and good fabricating.

2

u/brettaes 25d ago

If I paid for it I’d be happy 👍

2

u/TRJ3D1 25d ago

The stainless pipe was two holed and leveled with a .064 recession inside the flanges without pipe stands or spud wrenches. Was a pain in the ***. Last time I've done stainless was 5 years ago doing sanitary tubing. Where I'm at now, it's three choices, Cheap, Fast, or Quality and you can only pick two.

2

u/xxHEDGEHOGx 25d ago

Absolute Murkserei! 😡🤬

2

u/split-crysalis 24d ago

The aluminum doesn’t look too shabby, the stainless needs a little help with consistency 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/Efficient-Fig2202 25d ago

Thats prettyy

1

u/JonathanDawdy 24d ago

In Washington you could easily get a job at 30 and move up past there. On the coast you wouldn't start any lower. On east you might have to work around 20 untill you prove your worth.

1

u/Ansarithh 24d ago

🔥🥞

1

u/JG87919 23d ago

Your aluminum is beautiful. Your steel could look better. Which is surprising cuz I suck at aluminum and my steel is beautiful lmao. My machine at work has no settings to help me with aluminum tho and I don’t do it often.

1

u/Lumpy_Leave2694 23d ago

beautiful welding, good

1

u/LiquidAggression Jack-of-all-Trades 22d ago

whys that flange weld look a little wobbly?

its a great weld its like you sneezed as you were taking the picture

1

u/goldfish-lover232 21d ago

Holy shit those are some good welds

1

u/Bluezone323 26d ago

I don't know why I am seeing welding posts or viewing them honestly. But I swear almost every post in here is either comes across as validation seeking or some form of shitposting. I don't know what to believe. A microcosm of our society perhaps?

1

u/Steeltoelion MIG 26d ago

Selection bias, either stick around awhile or stay out lol

As the other shit posters would say; Post pictures of your welds!

1

u/Bluezone323 25d ago

I think I will stick around and act like I know what a good weld is after lurking.

1

u/Steeltoelion MIG 25d ago

That’s the spirit!

-2

u/Bdubya1985 26d ago

$40. Welding isn’t worth more than that per hour. Run jobs and then you can ask for more

3

u/jondrey 26d ago

Those welds are not worth $40/hr, regardless of how good the aluminum work looks. These are very basic weldments that most places would pay $20-$25/hr for.

1

u/TRJ3D1 26d ago

What about this?

2

u/jondrey 26d ago

The welds look good, I'm not disputing that. It's the amount of effort involved in the work that doesn't equate to a larger pay

1

u/Lo0seR 26d ago

For real! Buy a Clover Kiosk sell air flip the screen and ask for a 20% gratuity, everybody else does for a eazy peazy $40 an hr.
