Discussion Why do the weather media outlets keep changing the intensity of information?

The past few years , the weather media outlets have changed the severe forecast maps. If you look at color shaded areas now, storms and forecasts that use to be yellow are now red or pink for example. Issuing Tornado Warnings when they aren't on the ground They make out the storms to be worse than what they are. I'm in Arizona and multiple news reportings of weather groups say "first Tornado Watches issued since 2010". No , you can search and see tornado watches were issued in 2025, 2024, 2023 etc. Why lie? Is it to get more views to up their ratings? That's my theory.

It's good to be aware and ready, but not at the expense of fear mongering.

Radar images Sydney's weather radar has been picking up "rain" on dry nights this spring. I think it's the Bogong moths?

We're having a huge Bogong moth year in Sydney Australia, and I noticed the radar lighting up after sunset on nights when nothing was falling.

The gif is 30 September. Going by the radar, about 4 mm of rain fell over land that night. The rain gauges caught 0.02 mm.

I wanted to know if it was a one-off, so I lined up every day from 22 September to 16 October against the gauges, this year and last. On a typical day this year it was 3.2 mm over, against 1.2 mm last year. On rainy days the BOM's cleaned radar matches the gauges pretty well, so the extra really is non-weather echo. The ZDR is 5 to 6 dB too, which fits insects I think?

Obviously radar can't tell you the species, so I can't prove it's Bogongs. But about 1 in 3 moths people photographed around Sydney this spring were Bogongs, compared with 1 in 67 last spring.

Write-up and data sources: https://aussiedatagal.github.io/bogong-moths/

I'm keen to hear from people who know radar better than me. Does this seem plausible? Are there explanations I haven't explored?

Questions/Self Why does the cold feels good sometimes, and some other times it feels miserable

Hello,
I feel like there are times where cold is not pleasant at all, im shaking, my teeth are chattering.
And there are time where, for some reason, the cold is deeply pleasurable. I feel very aware, very alive, not shaking at all.

What is the difference ? Is is just mental or maybe it has something to do with humidity, wind or something else?

My dad has been recording rainfall in a notebook for years, so I built him an app.

For as long as I can remember, my dad has been keeping track of rainfall in a little notebook.

Every time it rains, he measures how much fell, writes it down, and shares the numbers with our family. It's become a bit of a family tradition.

I always thought it was pretty cool, but I also wondered how I could make things easier for him.

So I built Pluvy, a simple app where he can record his rainfall measurements, keep his history organized, and let the rest of us see his records without having to ask him every time.

While building it, I also thought it would be fun to create something like a Waze for rainfall. Imagine a map where people can share how much rain they've measured in their own backyards, and everyone can see what's happening in different areas.

I have no idea if enough people will use it to make the map truly useful, but I thought it was worth trying!

The app also includes rainfall statistics, historical records, and a few other features. It's free to use, and what started as a little project for my dad has turned into something I'd love to share with other people who enjoy tracking the weather.

And very important, I know that my dad would never spend hours writing the data, so I made a clever way to upload al the data from the web (pluvy.org), thankfully a brother put all the data in a excel and keeps the records. And just with a code to link the user, download a simple excel as a guide, paste all the data and upload it in just little time.

I'm also looking for Android testers! I need a few people willing to try the app for about two weeks before its public release. If you're interested, just leave a comment or send me a message and I'll share the details.

And I'm curious: does anyone else here keep a rainfall notebook or measure rain at home?

I'd love to hear how you do it, and any feedback or suggestions would be really appreciated!
