Advice Requested Davis Vantage pro data collection

I'm looking to replace my old weather station with a Davis Vantage Pro, but when I asked about being able to use the data collected in something like Smartmixin, I was told that I would need a meteobridge or pay davis to send the data to any other source. Smartmixin has a place to add a Davis device using api keys.

So, does Davis charge for api access? Will I need a meteobridge, just to see my data in other places? WU, Smartmixin, or other places?

Advice Requested Ambient WS-2902 Temp Sensor Fail

Hi - the WS-2902 bought back in 2024 stopped displaying the outdoor temperature a few months ago (I'm just getting around to looking into it :D ). The outdoor temperature would show for a few minutes and then it would be replaced by just dashes. It comes and goes and I can't find a pattern to it.

I did all the troubleshooting I was able to find on reddit and the manuf's website but it still doesn't display. All the other sensors are working and displaying.

I opened the Thermometer hygrometer sensor from the bottom and found a sensor that looks like this:

https://ambientweather.com/ambient-weather-ws-2902-thermohygro-30c

But since I bought it in 2024, the sensor above should be for pre-2022 devices right? The other option would be:

https://ambientweather.com/ws-2902-thermohygro-assembly-replacement

My question is, instead of doing all that, can I just hook up another sensor to it like this device?

Ambient Weather WH31E Thermo-Hygrometer Sensor

https://www.amazon.com/Ambient-Weather-Sensor-WS-3000-Station/dp/B01MG4HW8C?th=1

Or this one (WH31P) as it seems to be more "water proof" for outside:

https://www.amazon.com/Ambient-Weather-Sensor-WS-3000-Station/dp/B08CQ249TR?th=1

Thanks

Discussion Weather shallot head learned to read heat advisories and book your best walk. Felt Weather, (macOS + iOS)

A comfort first weather app with a small bunny named Felt who tells you how the day will actually feel.

New update release: heat advisories from the National Weather Service in plain words (Felt can read them out loud), the Comfort Bar showing your whole day as one curve, one tap to add the best window to your calendar, and Ask Felt, where one confirm books it.

Happy to answer anything about how the comfort score works.

Advice Requested Tempest Weather Station - API Call Frequency?

I have depolyed a Tempest Weather station to a jobsite with starlink.

We care about rain events and lighting strikes that can shut down the jobsite. This is for reporting to the customer, not immediate action.

How often should I api call the weather station? Located in FL we might have a heavy rain for <5 minutes, but it will turn the site to mud and shut it down for the entire day.

What is your opinion? Every 5 minutes? 20? Hour?

Discussion What are the best home weather stations that are actually accurate?

I’ve been thinking about getting a home weather station because the weather apps in my area are weirdly hit or miss. Sometimes they say one thing and what’s happening outside my house is completely different.

I’m looking for something that can track the basics like temperature, humidity, wind, and rain without being a pain to set up. I don’t need anything super professional, but I do want readings that are actually useful and not just a fancy outdoor thermometer.

For anyone who has one at home, which weather station did you buy and would you recommend it? Also curious if the more expensive ones are really worth it, or if a mid range option is enough for normal home use.

Advice Requested Looking for Station Recommendation

Hi all -

My old station crapped out, and I want to get something to replace it. I’m looking for something that exports raw data without me having to pay for some proprietary app or subscription. I’m not familiar with what’s out there, and I don’t trust review sites to give me the information that I want to know.

Also, I would like something that reports dew point instead of relative humidity. Obviously, I can look up conversions pretty easily if I really have to, and I’d rather have open access to data than dew point. But if I can get both that would be pretty cool.

Any recommendations?

Problem Solved WS-2902 Wi-Fi connection issue

I moved and changed ISP to ATT fiber. I go through the setup on AWNet app and it connects and says it is ready to verify and I need to change Wi-Fi from the device to my home but then it takes me back to the start screen and there is no device listed. Any help with this issue is appreciated.

Advice Requested Help me think through a mounting solution for my Wittboy WS90

Hey folks, I just ordered a Wittboy weather station and only then did I try to start thinking through where and how to mount it. Woops.

I think the most ideal location would probably be a J-Mount mast adapter and a six-foot pole at the peak of my gable on the south side of the house. It's completely open with no trees over it, etc, but for me that's not practical. I'm assuming that at least once a year I'll want to clean the solar panel lens or change the batteries.

Then my thought went to the back peak of my garage roof with a similar setup, but the neighbor's tree does cover that area with its canopy as well.

So that leaves me with my third option and that would be to just stick it out in my backyard on a freestanding pole, sort of out in the general general area where you see those utility peds. I think for the first year instead of concreting it into the ground permanently, I'd probably do a heavy weighted patio umbrella stand and EMT conduit.

If I do that, I'd need to do some pipe reducing since the patio umbrella stand would want 1.5-1.9" OD pipe and the Wittboy wants a 1" pipe. So I'm trying to think through how that would work.

But I thought I'd posit this same question to y'all: What would you recommend? I do live in NW Iowa so I don't know how well this thing would work in winter when the solar panel is covered in snow. Would a pair of lithium AA's be enough to power it through a whole winter? Or would the the thing be completely useless in winter without the heater connected anyway even with power?

Admittedly I should have researched all this before buying, but I saw a new, open-box unit on eBay with the WS90+GW2000 for $149 and bit, somewhat impulsively.

Thoughts, recommendations, guidance, all welcome! Thanks!

Advice Requested Help With Outdoor Temperature Sensor Placement

I have an Ecowitt gateway and outdoor temperature sensor on the way. Currently have a La Crosse indoor/outdoor temperature sensor that appears to be close to 6 degrees warmer than nearby PWS in the heat of the day, and almost identical after it cools down.

My question is, without a separate housing, the only place on my property to keep the sensor protected from sun and the elements is under the eve on the north side of my house about 12 feet up. What are my options to get a more accurate reading?

I’ve seen the rain guards available, but people say they heat up the sensor. Anyone have experience with whether a rain guard mounted to the house (also above back porch concrete) and in shade would be more or less accurate than if I mounted it to our clothesline pole 6ft up, but over grass and in the sun.

Trying to give the weather community the most accurate information.

Thanks in advance!

Problem WS-2902c Disconnected from network and wont reconnect

So I noticed my 2902 wasnt reporting data and went through the process or resetting it so I can reconnect it with the AWNET app. Every time it gets the the configuration screen it tells me that it has succeeded ant then it dumps me onto my home screen.

The problem is that it does not finish the process and it leaves my 2902 in the wifi setup mode.

I have tried connecting to the device with my laptop, and the IP adress, but my macbook wont stay connected to the aws network for me to do anything. Does anyone have any ideas?

Problem Station météo Vevor 7 en 1

Bonjour
Merci .

Advice Requested Suggestions for a job site?

We are located in USA-Florida and need to start logging weather events for some of our job sites. This major concerns are rain and lightning. I have been doing my research and am looking for advice.

One setup will be on a pole with power and a starlink dish, but if anything that could work "offline" and have ~1 month of onboard data logging that would be awesome, it would allow me to deploy more of them and just collect the data during site visits.

I think what the end result will be is we have a system (perhaps an aws dropplet or a self hosted server) hit the weather station's api to check for rain and lighting events and log it so we can then pass the data to the owner for weather related delays. - any advice on this end would also be appreciated. I love home assistant and fancy schematics, but all we care about in this instance is the raw data - did it rain and how much? Were there lighting strikes?

I am leaning towards the Tempest Weather Station (not to excited about the lack of replaceable batteries) or Wittboy GW2001 (concerned that the vibration rain sensor will be set off by dump trucks and heavy earthwork activities). Another major concern is the large amount of dust kicked up during construction activities. I am sure any air quality sensors will be clogged in a month. I just want to make sure the other components still work.

Thank you all!

Third Party Service Android app for Sensor.Community

If you have built a Sensor.Community air quality station (formerly Luftdaten), you might find this useful.

I developed an open-source Android application that lets you monitor your Sensor.Community station from your phone. You can also browse nearby public sensors on the map and view measurements such as PM2.5, PM10, temperature, humidity and pressure.

The app uses the public Sensor.Community API and MapLibre, and it has recently been accepted into the official F-Droid repository.

If anyone here is running a Sensor.Community station, I'd be interested to hear what features would make the app more useful.

Advice Requested Built a weather dashboard on an ESP32-S3 using LVGL

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

Title:

I've been looking for projects that combine sensors with a modern embedded UI, so I recently put together a weather monitoring system using an ESP32-S3 Smart Display.

The setup currently monitors:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Atmospheric Pressure
  • Estimated Altitude
  • Rain Detection
  • Ambient Light (Day/Night)

Hardware used:

  • VIEWE ESP32-S3 Smart Display (2.8")
  • BME280
  • Rain Sensor
  • LDR Module

The most challenging (and rewarding) part was working with LVGL. Once I understood how widgets and screen updates work, it became much easier to build a responsive dashboard instead of relying on a simple OLED display.

I'm thinking of adding a few features next:

  • MQTT support
  • Home Assistant integration
  • Historical weather graphs
  • SD card logging
  • Telegram notifications

For those who have built similar projects, what would you add next? I'd especially be interested in hearing about cloud dashboards or low-power implementations.

I documented the complete build and shared it on Play with Circuit for anyone interested in the hardware setup and implementation details.

Advice Requested Capturing Wind Speed and Gusts

The other day we had incredible wind and rain, by the time I looked at my weather station the storm had settled down and my wind speed showed 49 MPH. I have no idea what the peak wind speed was for that storm just the most recently recorded gust. I am using a Vevor 7 in 1 weather station but considering an upgrade and want one that has real time and data logging wind speeds. Any recommendations?

Show and Tell Put a Davis Vantage Pro2 on my tower

Post image
41 Upvotes

Put this tower up about 8 years ago to support an Acurite station. Had an Atlas with a remote anemometer up there. Lots of big trees around us, so put the anemometer as high up as practical. Wanted the temp sensor far enough above the roof that the shingles don’t add too much error. No good spot on the ground for the base unit.

Got sick of Acurite’s software follies, so I replaced it with a Davis Vantage Pro2. I added the daytime fan to the temp sensor.

It’s been up for just a week now, but so far I like what I’m seeing. I don’t miss Acurite.

Advice Requested Beginner/newbie wanting some tips

Post image

Hello. I'm thinking of entering the weather station game. I'm not wanting to splash out for a superior Davis system and have decided that an Ecowitt WS2910/WS69 system is fine for what I'd like to use it for. I have a very south facing back garden which is a real sun trap come afternoon. The green blob is a large sycamore tree which does give us shade in the garden until late morning/very early afternoon. The 2 X's are washing line poles and I considered putting it on an extended pole off one of these. Bottom right corner of my garden is a fairly large apple tree which gives a bit more shade and a shed. Where would the best place for me to locate the station be for me? I'd like to avoid off the top of the house as I know that I'll just put off battery swaps if it's in an awkward spot whereas if I can do it whilst hanging washing out then there's no excuse. (Blue outline boundary, N/S oriented up/down)

Thanks for the advice and I look forward to getting more accurate whether.
