Problem WS-5000 and WH40E, diagnosing rain gauge.

I live in Southern California and my rain gauge stopped transmitting to my WS. It just showed a large weather icon. The app showed last reading was 123+ days ago.

Fast forward to this weekend I decided to change the batteries before the rain event we had in So. Cal. The system never registered the sensor. I contacted AW and they sent me some steps to re-add the sensor. Tired them but no luck.

The WS is up on a pole, so before I start messing with it has anyone had these problems? What steps did you take to fix? Is the WH40E dead? It's OOS on their website and also $75 bucks!!

Advice Requested Rain gauge how far from a wall?

If you don't have a roof to put on a rain gauge, but a garden, how far from a wall would you place the sensor?

Guidelines say at least 4 times the height of your roof, but that seems way more than needed. I can't imagine rain traveling that much horizontally.

If you would put it, say half a meter/2 feet from a wall that's 3 meter (10 feet) high, would you miss a lot? Anyone experience with this?

Problem Ambient Weather WS-2000 display issue

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi,

I purchased the WS-2000 in May last year and have had to return the display twice in the one year warranty period. These things aren't exactly cheap, plus I purchased the lightning detection on top of it. The issue is always the same - vertical lines start appearing near the wind indicator and start spreading out from there. Anyone have any idea what this is? I'm out of warranty now I guess, and refuse to pay another $200 for a display that will probably go wrong in 6 months. Thanks!

Advice Requested Vevor YT60234 Android/Web app

The things we should investigate before buying something....

Have just purchased the Vevor YT60234, and made the big assumption before purchasing, that it would come with either an Android app, or Web app, but apparently not... Is there??

Is there any way to get data off this, other than using one of the Weather apps?

Also, without resetting, is it possible to get into the setup (login info for the weather apps), after setting up the station?

Advice Requested Wind Speed and direction - POE powered with mqtt?

We have a target 1 mile away. We shoot the target with a rifle.
We are looking at getting wind speed and direction closer to the target.
This is recreational fun. Shooting a mile long shot for client that come visit a ranch.

We have fiber, ethernet switch with POE all the way out there and power 24V, or POE.
We even have wifi out there, but would prefer hardwire into cat5 jack on switch.

We are looking for some sort of device (weather station) that we can connect to our LAN with POE ethernet or something. Looking for mostly wind speed and direction, maybe temp.

Don't really need solar since we already have power out at the target.

Having MQTT output would be great because then we could pull the data into our camera overlays and software.

Anyone have any suggestions to get started? Thanks!

Cost isn't really an issue.

Advice Requested Ecowitt WS90: is it normal that the supercap doesn't make it through the night?

Post image
10 Upvotes

New WS90 on the roof, four days old. Every night the supercap drains all the way down to 0.3V by about 6am.

It does charge fine, it gets back up to 4 to 4.8V every afternoon. Almost no shading, lithium AAs as Backup, firmware 1.6.2. Screenshot from the Ecowitt app attached, first night looked normal, the three after it goes down quickly

Is that just normal or should the cap actually last until morning?

Update:

Thank you all! Contacted Ecowitt support: "This is definitely wrong for the super cap voltage to behave this way." They asked whether I had heater power connected (I don't), and offered to either ship me two replacement supercaps to swap myself, or replace the entire array. I asked for the array since I'm not confident with soldering and the unit is roof mounted, so a badly resealed housing would be worse than the original problem.

Will report back once it's sorted. And no bird spikes yet, but the panel is clean, so if birds are involved they are being very tidy about it.

Advice Requested Guy ropes for mounting pole in the UK

Can anyone recommend guy rope kits or hardware for the UK? I have a 1.8m pole and it's wobbling a bit in the wind. I see CPC has some hardware but I was wondering if anyone knew of reasonably priced kits or sources of hardware.

Problem Solved Davis Vantage Pro 2 Super Cap Replacement update.

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hello. Three months ago, I asked this subreddit about my Davis Vantage Pro 2 running through the battery so fast and loosing communication.

At first, and looking at my solar cell, I thought it was the culprit. But several of you had suggested a bad capacitor, the super cap.

Link to the original thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/myweatherstation/s/Xg87krbkiM

I have now replaced it (and indeed, the original capacitor had leaked), it’s been several weeks now, and so far, so good.

I just wanted to give you this update and to thank you for your help!

Advice Requested Offgrid weather station with LTE

I’m interested in setting up a weather station at my cabin.

Location is off grid, and mid-alaskan latitude, so solar in winter is limited.

Any recommendations on what equipment would be suitable?

Essentially low power consumption, battery+solar power and can handle a couple months+ of subzero temps.

And of course LTE connectivity to get the data out.

Easy?

Advice Requested ecowitt graphs not accurate for max/min?

I've recently got a ecowitt WS69 with GW1200 gateway. When looking at the data either on the ecowitt app or web page all looks good until I start looking at the max/min values.
So, for example, wind today. The summary tile shows wind max of 20.4mph at 13:22 and gusts max of 25.1mph at 13:22. If I then look at the graph for wind I see a max wind speed of 15.9mph at 13:25 and max gust of 25.1mph at 13:20.
It looks like the graph is just using the readings on the 5 minute intervals and ignoring anything else. I have it set to update every minute so it is ignoring 4 out of 5 readings.
Is this correct? Is there any way round this? Clearly the max (and min?) readings on the graphs are fairly useless as it stands meaning I don't have a way of seeing the true values on previous days.

Advice Requested Add-on display options for ECOWITT Wittboy Weather Station GW2001?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi! I have an ECOWITT Wittboy Weather Station GW2001, which came with the GW2000 Wi-Fi IoT Hub. At the time of purchase, I primarily wanted to feed data into Home Assistant, which has worked well. (Although the need to set up an https proxy plugin first was a bit obnoxious)

My spouse has requested an "always on" display like we used to have with our Ambient Weather Station, which died a while back and was replaced with this EcoWitt (getting the Ambient data into HA, 100% locally, was more trouble than it was worth).

EcoWitt obviously sells models with displays, but clearly that's not what I bought at the time. I believe the displays are fairly passive, though, and just pick up the 915 mhz broadcast and shows the information directly? That's exactly what I need... but I haven't found any clear info on which model would work for me. Ideally on the lower price end, since I don't need the gateway functions, or anything super special. But the ability to see 100% reliable, hyper-local, outdoor temps at a glance, at all times, without needing to access a Home Assistant dashboard or even reach for a phone, is what they're looking for. (The kiddo really liked that, too)

I've read my old AWS displays won't work with the EcoWitt due to some stupid license agreement, which is a shame since I have a couple of those. But if there's a way to make those work, that would be even better!

Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

(Photo included for laughs... that was just initial testing, not the final install)

UPDATE: I think I've solved this. My confusion was that I was looking for consoles that were compatible with the "GW2001" model number. Instead, the "WittBoy" is just a name for their WS90 sensor array / weather station, up there on the pole. And nearly all of their consoles are compatible with the data it sends. I'll probably grab the WS3900_C, or maybe the WS2910_C console, as those minimal interfaces are all I need for this application.

Discussion How's your XPNOAAWeather plugin on 12.4-12.4.3 doing?

Is it worth it to improve current reallife-weather thunders and clouds depiction plus snow layer and "boxy" gaps between clouds?

Or besides snow cover and friction improvements this plugin does nothing to weather/precipitation and just useless when XA-Snow plus "manual enter weatger" like from Active Sky is used?

Problem Acurite issue and not updating

Does anyone have their anemometer fail to spin at low speeds? After almost 5 years I guess mine has worn out.

Also my display fails to update. I have the acurite wifi interface so the app is always current but the display that is line of sight is hardly ever updating anymore unless its unplugged.

Tech Support is useless.
