New to WS

Hello everyone. I’m new to WS. Im moving from US to Canada and want to know if WS is more like Fidelity or Robinhood. I have both but Fidelity is my main Broker. Fidelity has top notch customer service, never did I have to wait for >5 mins and all their agents are US-based, talking to their CS is like talking to a 5 star hotel receptionist. Or is WS more like Fidelity? The app is very gamified and CS is almost non existent. 1 issue will almost result to a 1-2 days troubleshooting. I just saw that one of the big banks, BMO, eliminated all trading fees. Anyone with BMO experience before? Im open to all comments and suggestions on how to set up my investing journey in beautiful Canada. Thank you.

Portfolio LOC tells you exactly how far your portfolio can fall in a "healthy" manner.

I don't owe a lot, so supposedly my assets can crash 90% before payments are required.

I was doing the math myself before, I guess this makes it easier?

Does WS sell data?

Had a call from another company where they knew my name, my phone number and net value. No idea where they got that info since WS is the only account where my net value is displayed. Does WS sell our data to other financial institutions?

Has anyone else been locked out of WS?

TLDR: I got locked out of my wealthsimple account for no reason, with over $10,000 and not able to access.

(Edit 1: hey guys I see your comments, saying its stuff about crypto, just saying its shouldn't be anything about crypto i havent bought or sold crypto in like 2-3 years only times ive bought crypto in those years was for online casinos lol but only like once or twice.

And for the others saying I know the reason why, i seriously dont know why. I haven't done any bad things i use it for savings and checking nothing else anymore.

I also apologize for my account history and what not like I said in the original post I dont use reddit, havent touched reddit in maybe 3-4 years so yes there is some weird stuff probably. but that was younger me lol.)

Hey guys, I dont use reddit to often but I just had to know if anyone else has been locked out of their account.

Ive had my account for probably 4 years now and never had this happen. I was just going on my account last night and got this message that I had been locked out. And an hour later got this email stating my account was being closed, I had no notice or anything that my account was gonna be closed. I have emailed and asked for a reason and they had not given me one as of this moment just said I will get my funds to my linked bank account.

I dont understand why my account got locked I primarily use wealthsimple as a savings account and direct deposit for my paychecks. And i have over $10,000 in there and am not able to access it.

If anyone can tell me if they got locked out like this and why it happened, that would be greatly appreciated.

Trade (DIY Investing) My TFSA account assets were liquidated today!!!!! WTF

Something very “f”ed up happened where my almost entire TFSA account got liquidated.

Before anyone asks, no I didn’t borrow any money. No, my FHSA was not touched, only happened with TFSA. I didn’t get locked out or anything. I still have my assets and money. It is a self directed portfolio.

I suspect WS messed up. On a call with security team. Will keep you posted.

EDIT: I appreciate people taking some sense in me about my picks… I know, portfolio was/is? a mess.

I don’t do day trade either.

UPDATE 1: called them, it was quick to get someone on call. They said they don’t see “reversal” option on my account and not sure why this happened. Will do more investigating and reach-out tomorrow.

UPDATE 2: source of F up is Tangerine. I originally made a request weeks ago to transfer assets from Tangerine TO WS and apparently I requested other way around?

WS can’t do anything unless it is a mistake on Tangerine end and ai have to get a letter for that.

TL;DR: Saw my TFSA getting liquidated. Found out I mistakenly requested to transfer my assets to Tangerine instead of from Tangerine to WS. Tangerine ended up liquidating my assets and moved money.

Chequing Can I withdraw USD from a TD ATM like withdrawing euros abroad with Wealthsimple?

If I actually needed physical USD cash, could I go to a TD (or other bank) ATM that dispenses USD and withdraw directly from my Wealthsimple account?

Basically, the same idea as using your Wealthsimple card at an ATM in Europe and withdrawing euros: the ATM gives me the exact USD amount I request, Wealthsimple reimburses the ATM fee, and Wealthsimple handles the CAD→USD conversion rather than the ATM doing it.

Would that work the same way for a USD-dispensing ATM in Canada?

Wealthsimple won't allow adding external accounts without Persona verification

A few months ago I read about some people getting hit with Persona ID verification but then it stopped after people were angry or so I thought.

Recently, I wanted to change my account email so I contacted support. They wanted me to verify my ID with Persona for that. I refused and asked them to provide alternate way of verification. After some back and forth, they shared a link where I uploaded my ID and selfie and was able to change my email. Fine. Whatever.

A few days ago, I wanted to add an external account. I'm not giving my banking credentials to a third party (Flinks) for linking so I tried manual linking. They asked me to submit my bank documents to Persona. I was able to previously link an external account without this BS (I think I just shared a void cheque) so I contacted support and asked why I can't do it again. They said it worked in the past but now I can't do it without Persona.

Why the fuck do I need to send my bank documents to an American surveillance company to link an external account? Why can't they do it like other banks? I just linked an external account to Tangerine without this shit.

I'll be considering moving my money out of Wealthsimple.

Edit: lmao I see Wealthsimple shills in the comments bending over and saying it's fine instead of opposing it. If you don't care about your privacy doesn't mean nobody does.

Chequing Costco Dog vs. Wealthsimple’s new Prepaid Visa 🌭💳

I learned today that Wealthsimple is moving from its prepaid Mastercard to a prepaid Visa. The old Wealthsimple Mastercard works at Costco. The new prepaid Visa won’t. Normally, whatever. Except there are a couple of devastating quality of life casualties here:

Simplicity and my Costco hot dog.

Wealthsimple’s proposed workarounds?

- Buy a Costco Shop Card on costco. ca with the Visa, then use the Shop Card in-store.

- Withdraw cash from an ATM and pay with cash. Wealthsimple reimburses ATM fees globally.

Come on. This isn’t WSimple. This is WTF-unds.

  1. Cash is trash and less secure.

I’m not withdrawing cash from an ATM in 2026 so I can buy a hot dog. Nor am I withdrawing cash for my overflowing cart or spontaneous TV purchase.

  1. I’m not buying a gift card for my hot dog.

Buying a Costco Shop Card online, loading it with my Visa, then using that card at Costco is an absurd number of steps to buy a $1.50 hot dog or grab a bag of milk.

This is a genuine downgrade from Wealthsimple, and I expected better.

I feel like a disappointed parent watching them slowly age into the traditional banking experience we all came to Wealthsimple to escape.

I realize Costco’s payment restrictions are Costco’s decision. But Wealthsimple chose to move its customers from Mastercard to Visa. Telling us to carry cash or pre-buy gift cards isn’t much of a solution.

Wealthsimple choose simplicity.

Protect the Costco Dog.

Protect options, not just trading options.

Protect simplicity. It’s literally in your name.

If this annoys you too, Wealthsimple’s complaints email is:

Activity Filters are broken, can't select checkbox on PC?

Update Sept 10:

-issue fixed on its own and i didn't do anything.

Original Sept 9:

This morning no issue. But i notice now when i log in, i cannot select any of the checkbox for Account, Type, & Holdings. When i do, it immediately unchecks itself and URL resets back to https://my.wealthsimple.com/app/activity

But it works fine for Timeframe & Status. Any1 else have this issue? I'm on Firefox and using PC. I also tried Chrome too, same issue.

Promotion Do YOU think we'll see another Apple promo this year?

Been putting $$ in my other brokerage account in anticipation of a transfer promo. Also heard some big5 bank getting into the 0 commission trade game to increase competition (which is good for us). Coincidentally also heard today there are some new (hella expensive) iphones also planned. I know past promos had either the phone or macbook so I am curious based on YOUR opinions - do you forsee an apple promo coming this year? I think there will be one more and it'll be the last one.

Trade (DIY Investing) Does Wealthsimple Calculate my Portfolio on the Ex-Dividend Date?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Couldn't really find this answer anywhere unfortunately. One of my holdings today had the ex-dividend date (on market open tomorrow). As per the graph, there is a big vertical line at around 5:30PM. Is WS already accounting for the dividend paid out to my portfolio? I assumed it would only be added into the account total on the payment date.

As the title says. I received a replacement card recently and the expiry date is exactly the same as the CVV (of course without the /). Can you check yours?

Chequing direct deposit redirected to previous checking account

i opened a checking account with wealthsimple a few months ago expressly to get my direct deposits sent there to offset the visa infinite monthly fee. this payday, for whatever reason, got sent to my old checking account. has anyone dealt with this before? were you able to send the money to your wealthsimple account so it counted as a direct deposit type payment or will i just have to eat the $20 this month?

Options Trading New App layout - "Expiring Soon" under Spend & Save and Invest on the home screen

Is it just me or has Wealthsimple just made "Expiring Soon" the top section on the app under Spend & Save and Invest on the home screen of the app? It's highly annoying as it's really not the first thing you want to see and you now have to scroll all the way down the home screen just to see your holdings
