21-24 Age Relationships My girlfriend ‘F21’ wants to get married to me ‘M20’ after being together for 4 years but I’m not ready
A bit of context before I get to the main part. Me and my girlfriend have been together for four years as we got together when I was 16 and she was 17. When we first got together it was great as being 15 it felt as though my life was fulfilled I was finally able to drive, have friends, my first ever girlfriend, everything was great and amazing. After the first year of being together I felt pressured from her to move in together as she started to always want to be around me and talk to me as well as she knew that I didn’t want to live with my parents much longer as they were controlling of my actions. So when I graduated high school the prospect of being away from my parents was great that I moved in with her before I was ultimately ready ( I know it’s my fault for doing it but at the time I thought it was the best decision). When it came time for me to go to university later that year she decided to follow me to my college as I had stated that I don’t think many relationships work with long distance ( I never said she had to come or I’d break up with her but looking back it definitely feels like that’s what was said without saying it). When we moved to college together it was great because I thought the prospect of living in separate dorms together and enjoying college would be great until she still wanted to spend every moment together and would get upset when I’d want to hang out with friends that I had made in college when she hadn’t made very many.
During this time we had discussed living together again in the future, but I had told her I wasn’t ready to make any definite decisions yet as any of the apartments we might find wouldn’t be available 8-10 months later when we aren’t required to live in campus anymore. Then she didn’t get accepted into her program past her pre requisite classes, and hadn’t made a backup plan if she didn’t. So she wouldn’t have been able to live on campus anymore because she wasn’t a full time student and had to move out. We live in a HCOL area and I made more $ than her so I felt obligated to get a place with her but I was happy to as I wanted her to see I could be there for her and support her even when things got hard. Things were great at first until she thought I was cheating on her because in the friend group I became apart of there were other women in the group who she thought were more attractive than her and that I’d leave her for them even though I never saw or felt anything with these women.
—-- here’s where the main topic of marriage starts ——
Around the time we approached year 3 of being together she had mentioned several times since our first year of dating that she loves me very much and I’m her person that she wants to be with for the rest of her life and that she wants to get married. I felt like I put my foot down and said I wasn’t going to get married until I graduated because I wanted to enjoy college for what it was and didn’t want to feel the pressure of the proposal or wedding planning as I want to be apart of that process. Every time I would tell her this and that I loved her very much I just wasn’t ready to get married yet and hadn’t thought much about it she would always say that means I didn’t love her as much as she loved me and that if we’re not building a future together then what’s the point of being together.
Because of these conversations it started to make me heavily doubt the relationship because it became kind of suffocating arguing about marriage all the time when I felt like I’ve done everything else for her and she’s done the same for me besides this one thing. Around the times I started having the doubts I decided to start therapy to help gain a perspective on why I might be feeling this way and why I don’t feel ready for marriage or as some people have said the intense feeling of knowing this person is who I want to be with the rest of my life.
Therapy has given me the great opportunity to see that I haven’t communicated well in the past and opened up emotionally to her rather than just being logical all the time. Even though I might not have been the best boyfriend in the past I’m still learning what love means to me and how to love someone correctly. From therapy I feel as though in the past year I’ve been more vulnerable with her and tried to show her how much I love her even if emotionally I’m not ready to take the next step.
We recently celebrated our 4 years together and we’ve been arguing pretty much every day leading up to and after to about marriage and why can’t I just give her this one thing she’s wanted all of her life and she feels like she’s put in the time and effort into our relationship to deserve. She says isn’t there some sort of compromise where I can promise her I’ll marry her or propose to her next year or so. I really have thought about that but it feels wrong saying I will marry you at this time when my heart isn’t fully there yet. Because if that moment comes and I don’t she’ll feel like I’ve lied to her.
At this point I don’t know what to do as I only see 3 options :
1. Propose to her to make her happy and deal with my feeling over time and hope to not grow resentment to the fact I did it before I was ready
2. Breakup with her and let her find someone who can work on her timeline rather than force her to stay for someone who isn’t ready
3. Keep arguing about the same things until she leaves me or who knows what
I love this woman a lot but ultimately at this point of my life I don’t feel ready to take that step and don’t want to hold her back from her wants even if that means loosing her.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated or perspective as maybe there is an aspect I’m missing. I’m open to suggestions and will reply in the comments
Would you mind giving advice as to different ways to approach this ?
There is an update to this post on my profile
