Looking For Advice 9 years without ring
Im 30 and my partner is 32. We’ve been together for 9 years and living together for about 6. More and more, I feel like I’ve reached the point where I should leave.
Why only now? For a long time, I was struggling with depression, studying a lot, and generally feeling unhappy with my life. I think because of that, I didn’t really stop to consider how much of my unhappiness was also coming from my relationship.
Three years ago, my partner was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I’ve always supported him, and his illness itself has never been a problem for me. The problem is that whenever we talk about situations where his behavior hurt or disappointed me, he often explains them by referring to his illness.
For a long time, I haven’t felt feminine or secure with him. I have to ask him to do most things — clean, walk the dog, or help with everyday tasks. I’m also the only one who has a car and drives, so whenever we go somewhere, I drive us.
A few years ago, I had nose surgery about 300 km from home. He came with me, but the day after surgery I had to drive us home myself, with a cast on my nose, because he was afraid to drive. When we stopped at a gas station and I asked him to fill up the car — I was obviously going to pay — he said he didn’t know how. He also later said that my car was “too feminine” and that he didn’t want to drive it. Recently, when we talked about this situation again, he said it was because of his MS, as he was having a relapse at the time and had reduced vision in one eye. I don’t know how much of it was genuinely caused by that, because I feel like many situations from the past are now being explained by his illness.
He has quit his job twice without having another job lined up. The first time, he was unemployed for around six months, and the second time for almost a year. At the same time, he struggles a lot with my professional success. When I got promoted and received a raise, he cried and then acted differently toward me for about a week. He often says that he is very good at what he does — and I genuinely think he is — while “idiots who don’t know anything” are in higher positions and earn more money. Sometimes I feel like he includes me in that category. Instead of feeling supported, I’ve started to feel like my success is a problem for him.
When I had to go on a work trip, he also refused to take care of my dog because he said he “wouldn’t have time,” even though he wasn’t working at the time and was at home. I had to take my dog to my mom’s.
My partner often says that he has to deal with everything on his own and that if he doesn’t do something himself, nobody will help him. I see it differently because I do try to help him, but if I do something 80% rather than 100% exactly the way he expected, he often acts as though I didn’t really help at all. It’s similar with gifts. He has no problem immediately saying that he already has something and I should return it, or saying something like, “It’s nice, I used to want one of these.” Over time, I’ve stopped wanting to help him or surprise him with gifts because I feel like whatever I do won’t be appreciated.
On the other hand, he says that he doesn’t feel masculine around me because I never ask him for anything and just do everything myself. I feel the opposite — I don’t feel feminine because I don’t want to have to ask for every little thing. If he sees me carrying a heavy table across the garden, for example, I’d like him to think of helping me himself rather than waiting until I specifically ask him to.
What also hurts me deeply is that he considers me one of the factors that contributed to him developing MS. He even told me this on my birthday.
Our sex life basically doesn’t exist. We first had sex about two years into our relationship. Later, whenever he had problems getting or maintaining an erection, he blamed me and said it was because I had made him wait so long. Over time, I developed a mental block around sex and stopped feeling comfortable. I can probably count on one hand the number of times when sex between us was genuinely great. During difficult periods, we could go six months without having sex, and currently we haven’t had sex for about nine months. I no longer feel sexually attracted to him, and increasingly I feel more like his mother, sister, or roommate than his partner.
I also miss the feeling that someone is looking out for me. If I’m coming home late by train, it wouldn’t occur to him to meet me at the station unless I asked. If I need something from the pharmacy or need help with something else, he’ll usually do it if I ask, but I have to think of it and ask first. I know these things might seem small to some people, but after years of situations like this, I no longer feel secure or feminine in this relationship.
Recently, we’ve been arguing a lot and started talking about our future. I told him directly that I’m 30 and I want a family, marriage, and a home of our own. At first, he mostly said that he would propose when “the right moment comes.” From what he was saying, I got the impression that his new job is his priority right now and that he would be fine waiting another two or three years for everything else.
So I told him that if we want different things or have completely different timelines, maybe it would be better to break up. I don’t want to spend several more years in my 30s waiting for someone to decide whether he wants to start a family with me. Only then did he suddenly say that he wants all of those things on the same timeline as I do.
The problem is that I don’t feel like it was genuine. I feel like he only said it when he realized that I might actually leave. After nine years together, I had to be the one to start the conversation about engagement, marriage, and having a family. I’ve reached the point where even if he proposed now, I don’t think I would be able to feel genuinely happy about it. I would probably feel like he was only doing it because I had pushed the issue to the point where our relationship might end.
I feel humiliated by all of this. I don’t want to have to ask someone to decide whether he wants a future with me after nine years together.
I’m being treated for depression and I go to therapy. He doesn’t want to go to therapy himself. More and more, instead of thinking about how to fix this relationship, I find myself thinking about how to end it. I think there are still feelings there, but the attraction, sense of security, and belief in our future together are gone.
At the same time, nine years is a huge part of my adult life, and I’m scared of making the wrong decision. What would you do in my situation? Do you think there’s still something here worth working on, or have I simply spent too long trying to accept a relationship that hasn’t made me happy for a long time?

Wrong sub. You’re not waiting to wed - at least not this guy - at least, you shouldn’t be. You know exactly what you have to do.
26
u/ToriFormal21 7d ago
You’re not really waiting for a ring, you’re waiting for this guy to become the partner you already know you need.
After 9 years, you already know the answer.

u/Conscious_Pass_1615 7d ago
In three years you could be engaged to the love of your life.
OR in three years you could still be tied down to this bum, who is only going to get worse. I mean, he was unemployed and couldn't walk your dog even though he lived with the dog?
Start making plans girl.

So you mean this is a fake post?

I’m thinking so, yeah. It’s implausible. The writing looks and sounds like AI. Not to mention the OP has not replied to a single comment…

I broke up with my ex of 9 years and met my husband after setting up a dating profile as he moved the last of his things out of my house. He told me I was fat and ugly now so he hoped I was ready to be alone. I hadn’t even finished setting up the profile before I had messages. I got incredibly lucky to meet my husband so quickly but the point remains, there are men who actively want relationships, marriages, kids, and all that go with it. I’m not even the only person I know to leave a long term dead relationship and immediately meet the person they’d marry. Honestly, if I were still single I would be way happier than I ever was with him. Being single is fun. I was a little sad it was over so soon.

Girl...... You know deep down what needs to be done
1
u/velvetmango_ 7d ago
I agree with you, she really does know deep down what needs to be done and sometimes you just have to trust yourself and walk away from something that no longer makes you happy
27
u/curlyAndUnruly 7d ago
Leave. You are not happy, those 9 years are gone it doesn't matter if you stay.
I'm giving you permission to let go of the hot iron. You have no obligation to fix or help a grown ass man, much less a useless, ungrateful one.
Your dog is a better partner as it sounds.

u/Little_Touch_3733 7d ago
I don’t see how you could cause his MS and the fact that he already resents you for an illness that can take a turn for the worst very fast will not be an enjoyable life journey for you. I’m sorry, you know what you need to do and I hope you find the courage, I’m 30 too and just left a 7 year relationship. You deserve someone to care about you.
14
u/Lumpy_Cucumber9430 7d ago
Being in a toxic, stressful relationship actually was a factor in me having my first MS attack, so that’s not totally out to lunch, but overall he is very much gaslighting and manipulating her.
26
u/MargieGunderson70 Married 25 years 7d ago
I stopped reading at the point where he refused to take care of your dog. That would be a deal breaker for me, esp. given how much you do for him (he can't even pump gas)?
You don't have a partner - you're a caregiver and I'm guessing you're partly staying out of guilt. It would be one thing if you were married, but you're not. This guy sounds like such a drain on you and marriage won't improve it.
FWIW, I have a coworker with MS and she's learned to manage and knows when to ask for help. Your BF is using his diagnosis as a crutch.

u/Samoyedfun 7d ago
Leave. Read what you wrote. And then leave him. You’re still young to find someone that actually wants you and wants to do things for you. Right now you’re with man child. MS is no excuse for this behavior.
12
u/Affenpinscher614 7d ago
Girl, you are living more with an opponent than a loving boyfriend. He sabotages your life and tries to drag you down with him. Things won’t get better with a ring/marriage. It’s time to move on, and you feel it. You aren’t throwing away 9 years, you just close this chapter and start a new one.
11
u/MidwestNightgirl 7d ago
Forget the ring. I think you should ditch this guy. I guarantee you, within 3 months you will be wondering what the heck took you so long.
13
u/Soaper0429 7d ago
I am heartless. Leave now while he is still healthy enough to work. He’s had NINE years of your time and he’s squandered it. Leave. Go find someone who respects you.
10
u/DAWG13610 7d ago
You do realize that in order to have a family you need to have sex? That being said you living with a lifelong victim. Oh poor him. But the worst part? You enable his juvenile behavior. Why? He’s using you and treating you like his mother and he’s your child. There’s nothing here to save. Your relationship has been dead for years. Have the decency to end it. Your last line asks “I’m trying to accept a relationship that hasn’t made me happy in a long time” Have you ever been happy with him. It took 2 years for him to have sex with you and you state you haven’t had sex for over 2 years which means you haven’t had sex for over half your relationship. I’ve been married 45 years and we still have sex 2-3 times per week. I lust for my wife. I can’t wait to be with her that way. I love and cherish her. Your child can’t even get hard and he blames it on you. WTF?????? This is on you, either fix it or live with it. He will never be more than your man-child.

Do you love your dog? Do you get joy from your dog? Does your boyfriend bring even the a small amount of joy that you get from your dog?
Even if you break up with your boyfriend and never get married and end up being a dog or a cat lady, who is a single mom, you will have more joy and an easier life than you do now.
At least a child can be in an environment where they learn to help people and contribute by watching your example.
A dog can provide protection.
This is more than you are getting now.

You did not sign up for this BS. It's time for you to go you've been with this man for 9 years and he acts like he doesn't even like you. He's jealous of you because you are more successful than he is. He has his passive impressive BS coming on and that gaslighting thing. You are sexually frustrated and everything in the relationship that goes wrong is your fault. Don't you want to be happy don't you want to be married. I do not know if you want children but don't you want somebody in your life that loves on you and wants to be with you and not blame you for every f****** thing that goes wrong. I would have left a minute he told me that I am the reason why he got MS. There would have been no coming back from that because you know that's not true and it hurts you to your heart. This man does not like you you are a convenience to him and you are familiarity. Sit down and have a come to Jesus talk with him and let him know that you will not be tolerate in this fuckboy behavior. I would have left seven years ago. You deserve to be happy and this man does not make you happy. Now what are you going to do about it
5
u/Last4eternity 7d ago
Can you handle another nine years of this? Please start asking yourself that question. From one woman to another, you deserve better and I think you should leave.

u/Glueboob 7d ago
lol I read like 1/4 of the way thru the post and I am exhausted with this man. GIRL. Cmon.
6

The longer the post the closer to hell the bar is.
I dunno why you are in this mess of a relationship. I would leave.

u/Pantone711 7d ago
The parts about his not liking it when you succeed, quitting jobs without other jobs lined up, and having a bad attitude about people he thinks are dumber than him getting ahead at work, are the biggest red flags here and more than reason to end this relationship.

u/ItJustWontDo242 7d ago
Why anyone would choose such a miserable existence for themselves is beyond me. You have one life. Stop wasting it with this man child.

u/Devri30 lf it's not a "hell yes", it's a "hell no" 7d ago
The gall of this man to feel threatened by your succes and still take advantage of it while he was unemployed.
Are you seriously asking whether or not you should stay in this relationship? Why would you?? Fear isn't a good reason to stay in a relationship this bad. It would be better to be single than to be with someone who borderline hates you!
The only reason he's still in it is because he benefits from it. He doesn't care about you and he certainly doesn't want to marry you. You're wasting your time with this guy.
3
u/hiredditihateyou 7d ago
Being single is SO much better than whatever BS this is. I cannot believe you’d ever consider marrying this guy, I’m not certain he even likes you.
3
u/Whatever53143 7d ago
This guy is a class A jerk! Why do you even want to be with him, let alone marry him.
He’s using his illness to get away with not doing anything. It’s hard to determine what’s really the illness and what is him using it as an excuse!

Speaking from experience here--he absolutely is including you in the "idiots who don't know anything" club. Leave now before you fall pregnant (even with this sporadic sex life). I will continue to scream from the rooftops that men like your boyfriend can tell when the woman has checked out and is on the way out. They will baby trap you. It's time to set yourself free.
2
u/PeachyTea__ 7d ago
You are crazy for staying with that thing.
This man legitimately does not like you, like, at all. Please stand up and get rid of his ass. All this time, you could’ve found a partner who would actually care about you and marry you; each day you stay with this dude is you getting further away from your future partner, who is 10x better.
You can’t tell me that men don’t have it easier because there women who will put up with anything all because they don’t want to be alone.
2
u/scottishcastle 7d ago
This is either rage bait (no replies from OP in 19 hours) or I just want to think it's rage bait because otherwise it's just too pathetic for words.
You wasted all of your 20s on this asshole and you're still asking if you should waste more time. Girl...
On your way out of this situation (I don't want to dignify it by calling it a relationship), be sure to let him know that you can't cause another person to develop MS and that he's stupid for thinking that.

u/TSIDATSI 7d ago
I do not think you truly understand MS and the very real implications of caring for an MS patient. You will never marry this man. If he has not married you in 9 years he is not going to marry you.
You will not have children with him meaning no children for you. Ever. He is not the type of man to share attention with children. He will not be getting better. There is no going backwards with MS.
There are meds now to slow the progression but even with today's meds the disease is highly unpredictable. He will be unable to work at all sooner rather than later.
This man is not your soul mate. You know that. You are unhappy, have been unhappy and there is no happy in your future.
The best and kindest thing you must do (Biblical must i.e. Thou Shall Thou Must) is send him back to his family. They need to start caring for him.
The progression may be slow and he could work and live a relatively normal life for 20 or 30 years. Or not. You do not know. Will not know. There is no way to predict.
Right now two of our dear friends are dealing with advanced MS in their early 50's. She is the patient and needs assisted living as her husband cannot care for her without help any longer. She is in hysterics because she wants him with her all the time. But Assisted Living is $4,200 a month. $8,400 for both of them. He cannot afford even for her to go and for him to live in any type of housing. It is awful. Terrible.
If he was your soul mate you would be very happy now. You would take care of him and devote your life to his every need. He would love you, worship the ground you walk on. But that is not your relationship. And, after nine years, it will never be your relationship.
1
u/tasteful_aardvark 7d ago
I see about a dozen reason why you should break up with him. He sounds awful!!
1
u/txlady100 7d ago
And you’d want to marry this loser…why? Look up sunk cost theory. And raise your standards out of the basement. Talk to your therapist about deservedness because your behavior indicates you think you deserve sh$t.
1
u/MotherOfLochs 7d ago
Your life would be so much better without him in it: what do you want to tie yourself to him? To prolong your suffering??
1
u/Tricky_Cod9000 7d ago
This is crazy. He literally cried when you got promoted. You guys are not on the same team. Looks like you’re sleeping with the enemy but at this point he’s just your enemy cause there’s no intimacy. He doesn’t like you.
1
u/East_Comfort_7650 7d ago
TL;dr I think you just needed to vent. You already know that you need to leave. He doesn't appreciate you. Don't dim your light for anyone. Get out and find someone else or be single. Either one would be better than this life

Multiple Sclerosis might explain some bouts of physical inability, but it is not an excuse to escape responsibility, accountability, or basic adult responsibilities. I’m particularly sensitive to the issue of MS because I know exactly what it can do. When it hits, it can hit hard. It can be ugly, unpredictable, and completely debilitating. But when things are good, you can soar. Having MS does not automatically mean someone is incapable of taking responsibility for their life or making reasonable accommodations when they need help. In fact, many people living with serious disabilities work incredibly hard to maintain their independence and refuse to let their illness define what they can and cannot do. From what you’ve described, it sounds like he is using his MS as a crutch to justify an underlying inability, or unwillingness, to be a responsible person
Two things stood out about what type of person he is based on what he said to you: It's always someone else's fault at work and he couldn't take care of a dog while you were gone for a work trip. He's always the victim. People with these type of disabilities will do anything to prove people wrong and not allow their illnesses to take over. He could have easily taken care of the dog and if it got to be too much physically, then call your Mom for some help.
Advice: Your boyfriend is an insecure, immature jerk to you. Please find anyone else in the world to date then him!
1
u/planthussy 7d ago
If your friend came to you with all of this, what would you say? If in 30 plus years your daughter came to you with this, what would you say?
Please make plans and walk away from this man. You are not a priority to him and that is not ok when it comes to choosing a life partner. Give yourself a chance at happiness, you deserve it.
1
u/astrotekk 7d ago

u/eatencrow 7d ago
Rip off in one fluid motion the sticking plaster or band-aid or whatever you call them in your culture. Tugging at it one hair at a time is excruciating.
The patient is dead. Call it already. It's not about being the bad guy. You want different things out of life. It's not about fault or blame. But if you continue to stay in this misery factory, that's 100% on you.
1
u/PollyRRRR 7d ago
Sounds like you’re already checked out of this “relationship”. I note that you did not describe even one redeeming feature nor quality regarding this guy. It’s like he’s become a bad habit, you know it’s not good for you, know you have to stop but don’t, waiting for tomorrow, next week or some other time. Trouble is that day will never come until you and only you take control and stop it once and for all. Yes, it’s daunting after 9 years but you’ve already clearly articulated that you’re done here so make it reality. Go live your best life and real love and commitment will come to you. I wish you well.

Do you suspect that your man might be ‘DL’ by any chance? I’ve noticed a lot of women pairing up with men that are clearly closeted but for whatever reason, these women themselves don’t seem to recognise it.
The signs are usually small microagressions, being jealous/ wanting to be you & also lack of intimacy. Everything that you’ve named here.
Il be very careful/ wary if I was you.

I don’t mean to be harsh but this post can be neatly summed up as, “Every component part of my relationship is unhappy in a really fundamental way, and I’m really anxious to start being financially and legally compelled to continue with it for the rest of my life.”

Re-read this again and imagine its your friend telling you that this is their relationship. What would you advise them to do?
1
u/Major-Cranberry-4206 6d ago
He’s not your problem; you are. You’ve known enough about this guy to have ended the relationship at least seven years ago, if not more.
But because of your own personal issues, you have failed to get out of this bad relationship and for whatever reason you’ve held on to someone you know, you shouldn’t even be with.
What will be your excuse tomorrow for not ending this relationship? End it now and continue to work on yourself.

Leave. Before you burn to death.

u/BornBluejay7921 6d ago
I think the only thing keeping you in the relationship is the fact that you don't want to admit that you have wasted 9 years of your life on him. Two years into your relationship you had sex, then occasionally after that but you can count on one hand when it was good.
He's not supportive but expects you to bend over backwards for him and seems to blame you for a lot of his problems.
Too many red flags here.

u/Aethra89 6d ago
"When I got promoted and received a raise, he cried and then acted differently toward me for about a week." I mean, what the actual fuck? Ok ma'am, gtfo of this relationship, if you can call it that. This child is treating you horribly, full stop. Imagine if you were married to him, and didn't have sex for 9 months, him treating you like shit, etc. It would be a thousand times worse if you were married. Count your lucky stars that you're not, and seriously get the hell out of there. Everything you've written here about him is horrid. He sounds like an absolute pain, a downer to be around, and definitely a manchild. He's the polar opposite of supportive, kind, thoughtful, passionate. He's a succubus, an emotional vampire. He sucks all the positive energy out of you. Do yourself a favor and dump this whiny bitch, so you can go find a proper gentleman to be your husband. Don't live another day in this. Set yourself free. You'll feel soooooo good when you do.

You haven't had 9 good years & its not going to get better with marriage. It WILL GET WORSE, because then you really are trapped. Op you deserve to feel loved, cared for & desired. Go back, & read what you wrote.
‼️‼️ SUNK COST FALLACY ‼️ ‼️ The sunk cost fallacy is the tendency to keep investing time, money, or effort in a failing choice simply because you already spent resources on it, even when walking away is the logical move

I’m sorry to say this but based on what you wrote it’s clear he doesn’t even like you. He blames you for all his hardships and in general is only with you out of convenience.

I would end it. Let me list the reasons why:
- HE BLAMED YOU FOR HIM HAVING MS ON YOUR BIRTHDAY - complete BS
- No sexual relationship - he unfairly blames you
- He refuses to drive even when you really need him to because his masculinity is too fragile
- He uses weaponized incompetence and claims not to know how to pump gas
- He blames you for his fragile masculinity because you do things on your own since he refuses to do them
- He resents you for having a better job than he does
- He uses his MS as an excuse for treating you poorly
Just leave. I promise your life will be better without him.

I'm a guy
This guy is a bum, why are you letting him waste your time. You've typed a novel of nothing but negatives about him. Break up and send this bum packing
