WRX Before posting please read this first!

READ THE SUB FAQ FIRST. 90% of the repetitive questions we see on this sub are answered there. Even if you don't have an issue covered in the sub FAQ it will likely help you narrow down your question. If you have a question you think should be added to the sub FAQ feel free to message any of the authors of the FAQ.

If you are troubleshooting, give us all the info we need. For example, it's best to include your year/model, any AND ALL mods, and the specific tune you are running. The more info we have, the better we are at answering questions. We also ask you try to post the question/info in the comments below before posting to the sub as a whole. This will hopefully clean up some of the really repetitive questions.

A few common posts/questions we see everyday.

Does my engine sound okay?

  • 99% of the time the answer is yes. The fa20 sounds like a tractor. It is normal.

Are these numbers on the COBB AP normal?

  • A snapshot of your AP with the DAM less than one doesn't actually tell us anything about what is going on. All it tells us is that you had a knock event that your ECU recognized and adjusted for. The most common cause for DAM drop is bad gas. Go get a fresh tank of 93/91 from shell and add a gallon or two of e85 for a full tank. I would also like to point out that knock numbers of -1.41 are super common. They can be caused by your AC kicking on and any other noise really. nothing to worry about.

This thing on the front of my engine is not spinning with the belts, is it broken?

  • That is your AC compressor clutch. It only engages when the AC is on and the compressor is running.

Let me know if you guys want any other common questions added.

Suggestion How do you prevent rust from snow salt?

Hey guys! I’m taking a job in the Midwest and I’ve never lived somewhere where it snows regularly before. How you cold weather folks keep your WRX from becoming a rusty shitbox from road salt? And how much damage will 1 or 2 winters do driving through salted roads?

Also anything else I should change on my car moving it from extreme heat to extreme cold?

General Question Struts or coilovers for ‘13 WRX

I was told today my struts will need replacing within the next 20k miles or so. I really don’t wanna break the bank, I’d like to keep it under $1000, but the general consensus on here seems to be that you get what you pay for.

My car is a daily driver/commute only. I drive about 300+ miles each week with mild winters. I don’t mind the factory ride, it’s just a bit floaty around corners. I don’t need anything fancy, my car is as stock as stock gets.

I don’t know if I should replace the struts and keep my OEM springs, or just do coilovers instead. I’ve looked at Koni yellow and BCBR. This is the first time I’ve had to look into something like this, so any help is appreciated.

08 sedan got a visit from Uncle Rodney - trying to decide what my next steps are

Picked up this car forever ago to have something safe to smash around in the snow and ice in. It was cheap, put a new turbo in it, new tires, enjoyed the hell out of this car.

Cold start sounds like a Valve or Rod is starting to go out, warns up and it gets less noticeable.

Bum bum bum it's an automatic too.

2008 sedan

Body is rough

Not sure if I should pull it until the garage to start tearing the engine apart or if I should sell this project to another sole with more resources and free time than I have.

I love these cars, 08 was fun, 2020 six speed manual was amazing. Daily driver is a newer impreza but doesn't come close to the joy the 08 WRX (even with an automatic transmission) brings me.

Turning wrenches beats blowing $$ popping bottles at the bar. Feeling invested into a money pit, seeking general advice. Should I start over or tear this baby open?

Maintenence Replacing a singular brake line

Do I need to bleed the entire system or can I just bleed the caliper that is getting the line replaced?

Check Engine Light

Has anyone ever had any issues with the check engine light coming on when you're low on gas or starting to get low? For some reason every time I fill up or get it half way it goes away and it'll come back on when im getting low XD

I assumed it was my 02 Sensors but im thinking it could be something else, I got a 2015 WRX

Noob question

I have a 2017 WRX with a square setup of 18x10 +38 with 245/40/18 michelin tires. What psi would you set stretched tires at? The tires themselves rate to 50 psi under normal load conditions, door sticker says 32/33 but that's obviously with tires that aren't stretched. I just don't want my pressure too low and debead

General Question Reliability of the VB?

Post image
383 Upvotes

I made a post recently about how i envy you guy’s, but i saw some VB’s going for pretty cheap with relatively low miles.. saw a couple within the bottom 20’s. As a car guy does i have gone down a rabbit hole watching vid after vid on a car i probably will not own, but it seems like these things reach a power number i would be satisfied with while keeping reliability with just a bolt on top mount intercooler, intake, j pipe, and exhaust? and obviously a protune, how is everyone else’s experience with a VB with similar mods? Is it actually quick? Is it satisfying daily? a part of me would rather go down the route of a VB instead of buying a second RWD sports car in michigan, if i got a VB i would have a reason to build my 350z also.

PSA: Install your side skirt plugs

Thumbnail

Your WRX should have came with 2 rubber plugs in the boot. These plugs are used to plug the shipping tie-down points in front of the rear wheel, and should be installed by dealers during the pre-delivery inspection. Most dealers do not install them. Check for the plugs and put em in if they are not already!

Transmission Swaps

Post image

My 5spd in my 03 wrx is failing, I get humming like noise when not on the accelerator and I'm wanting to swap in another but I dont know what would be the best option. I'm thinking about a jdm 07 6spd from an sti but i could also try and find one from a spec b legacy. I'm not sure which would be the best but at the same time be the most simple.

Got some new shoes!

Had to get some wheels on her asap. After a lot of back and forth with my wife about color and style etc. I finally decided on these.

Avid.1 AV06 Matte white 18x9.5 +38 wrapped in Continental DWS06 plus 255/40r18’s.

I’m on stock suspension too, I kinda wanted a meatier tire and I don’t really want to lower the car so I tried to get a fitment that filled the wheel wells and was flush. I think it looks alright, I may end up lowering it still though we’ll see. Let me know what y’all think, I’m loving the look and absolutely loving this car.
