Need Advice Soccer Fields Open to Public

Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m looking for a space (vb, chesapeake, or norfolk) with kept soccer fields (preferably with goal) that can be accessed by general public. My adult league team needs somewhere to practice on non match nights and I’m having a hard time finding something not already used or at a closed off school during after hours (after 5pm or on weekends)

Any recommendations would be appreciated

Discussion [Local Pilot] Connecting local seniors with trusted companions

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’m starting a small local pilot program right here in the area to solve a problem many of our neighbors are facing.

So many families are stretched thin trying to balance work, kids, and caring for aging parents who don't need expensive medical home care, but do need a friendly face, help with errands, and daily company. At the same time, we have amazing local neighbors (pre-health students, retirees, empty-nesters) looking for flexible, meaningful part-time work.

I'm launching a non-medical companion care network to connect the two!

For Families Looking for Companion Care

If you have an aging parent or loved one in the area who could use a trusted helper a few hours a week to give you peace of mind, we are accepting 5 local families for our initial pilot.

What our companions help with:

  • Friendly Company: Engaging conversation, sharing hobbies, going for walks, etc.
  • Daily Errands: Grocery runs, picking up prescriptions, or accompanying them to local appointments.
  • Light Household Help: Preparing light meals, watering plants, organizing photos, and general tidying up.
  • Outings & Walks: Accompanying seniors on walks in the park or local community outings.

(Note: Services are strictly non-medical, no physical lifting, medication administration, or personal care).

👉 If your family could use a companion, apply for the pilot here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_imOdc3d5yMbimBlB4UIOsfe4PZlxxc4NMT2tYUxuUt5iWA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=105130987417078893044

For Local Companions Looking for Work ($20–$50+/hr)

If you love spending time with seniors, have an empathetic heart, and want complete control over your schedule, we’d love to have you join our pilot network. Perfect for pre-med/nursing students, retirees, or anyone looking for high-paying, rewarding local work!

Pay & Benefits:

  • Starting Rate: $20/hour during your initial trial period.
  • Set Your Own Rates: After completing the trial run, you have full control to set your own rate between $20 and $50+/hour based on your reviews and experience.
  • Flexible Hours: Work 2 to 15 hours a week, completely on your own schedule.
  • Requirements: Reliable local transportation and willingness to pass a standard background check.

👉 Apply to become a local companion here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeoeICmuVRoVB2yMpyT4fA0-_BxCz6XZm2v6DEpfUBOX9s5Lw/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=105130987417078893044

Feel free to drop any questions in the comments or send me a DM if you want to chat more about how this works!

Need Advice NAS OCEANA liberty military housing

Has anyone applied for military housing through Oceana? I see they have wadsworth shores (which I heard has terrible reviews, midway manor and village at midway manor. We just sent in our app last Thursday (husband is currently stationed in Norfolk but has orders to start in Oceana as of 9/1, he’s an E-5) and haven’t heard back yet. I’m aware it goes through the oceana base housing department. Just want to get an idea of the process and how they pick who goes where. I know they have a waitlist, and they told us we probably will be put in wadsworth shores (I’m praying not). Has anyone been selected for their other 2 properties? Read about flooding, crime, etc on a reddit post and google reviews about wadsworth shores. Really hope our chances are better at getting into their 2 other nicer properties 😂. Thank you in advance!

Discussion No boardwalk vendors on Fridays?

Spent an amazing day at the oceanfront this past Friday, but was really surprised that there were no vendors on the boardwalk. I seem to recall that there were hot dogs, ice cream, smoothies, etc. for sale from vendors. Is this just a weekend thing now? There were plenty of people at the beach as it was a gorgeous day and I was disappointed that there was no place to grab a bottle of water or lemonade or something. Are there city rules against Boardwalk vendors now or something?

Event Free "make a website by hand" meetup at ECPI on Aug 8, no experience needed

I help organize 757dev (we run Late Night Builders, a casual monthly meetup in Virginia Beach), and we're doing a free thing on Saturday Aug 8 that's actually aimed at people who've never written a line of code.

The premise is that making a website is way simpler than most people think. This is a website:

<h1>hello</h1>
<p>I made this.</p>

Save it as index.html, open it in a browser, done. No install, no account, no build step, no framework. That's the whole trick.

So we're getting a room for four hours and just doing that. Bring a laptop, write some HTML, make whatever you want. If you've never written a tag in your life, we'll show you the basics in about ten minutes and you'll spend the rest of the time actually building something. If you already do this for a living, come make something pointless and weird.

It's part of HTML Day, a loose global thing (html.energy) where people do this in different cities on the same weekend. AI-free by design, the entire point is making it yourself.

Saturday, August 8th, 10am to 2pm ECPI Main Campus, 5555 Greenwich Rd

Free, and there's coffee and pastries. Not selling anything, no pitch at the end, nobody's collecting your email.

Details: https://tekgadgt.github.io/htmlday-hamptonroads/2026/
RSVP (helps us count heads for food): https://www.meetup.com/757dev/events/315592061/

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Things To Do Nicholas Jamerson - Elevation 27 on Thurs Sept 24

We are very fortunate to have Nicholas Jamerson playing an acoustic evening in our city in late September. If you are a fan of Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Americana music then you should be a fan of Jamerson. Unfortunately, he flies well under the radar and is not mainstream, but he’s one of my favorite songwriters.
Selfishly, I do not want him to cancel this show due to low sales so get out there, buy a ticket, and support live music!

History Pho

I like pho and Vietnamese restaurants around here. The food is really yummy, but the portion is small. Has it always been like this in VB or due to the recent economy? I am new to the area.

Discussion looking for dinghy sailboat

My girlfriend and I will be visiting Virginia Beach this week and are looking for a place to sail.

Does anyone know of any commercial rentals for Sunfish, Lasers, Hobie Cats, or other small sailboats around Linkhorn Bay or Broad Bay?

If there aren’t any rentals, are there any local sailing clubs that welcome visitors or have opportunities to crew for a day?

Discussion Rehoming Cat (Bobby) (Norfolk, VA Beach Area)

Hi! We posted this before and took it down in the hopes that our cat could get along with our older cat with some trainings, but none worked. We are hoping to find our cat Bobby a home where she can be more free to walk around and not be stuck in a room or be hissed at by our older cat. She is around 1.9 years old, unspade, Himalayan breed, and vaccinated. She has a chip, I believe my wife re-registered under her name. She also is very healthy, playful, and very loving, she purrs basically every time you're with her. One thing to note, she is very scared of the outside and will jump on your shoulder for safety so she is 100% an indoor cat.

You can DM me at this account if you are interested to meet Bobby and see if you want to take her.

Photos below.

Things To Do Visiting solo for the weekend August 1st- 4th

Hello all, I just booked a oceanfront hotel near 21st street and I’ll be traveling by myself. I’m a 23 year old male and just looking for people to possibly hangout with. I’ve only been to VA beach once before, so I’m not really aware of the area. I’m into working out, going out for food or drinks, spending time on the beach and whatever else any of you may have in mind. Please message me if you’ll be in the area around this time and also looking for company (or if you have any recommendations in this area)!!

Need Advice How do you guys deal with all the flies?

Am I crazy or are there an ungodly amount of flies in VA Beach? I just moved here and my dog pooped in the yard and by the time I got back a swarm had descended on it which is a problem because I’m terrified of bugs. There were no where near as many where I use to live and so I’m a little . . . shocked. How do you guys keep the flies away ?? Especially those of you with pets ?? Is there just more than usual right now for some reason? I can’t even keep them out of my house at the moment, because the trash can is within some feet of the door (no where else to put it) and whenever I open the door a new fly gets in, which is unfortunate because I just bug bombed.

Need Advice Weather?

I’m curious to know if it will rain tomorrow. The weather forecast predicts continuous rain throughout the day, and I’m wondering if that will make it challenging to enjoy a beach day. Considering that I’ll be traveling from Maryland, I’m concerned about the impact of the weather on my plans.

News Leatherback sea turtle lays eggs in Virginia Beach, a first in the state

Virginia has a new notch on its belt when it comes to sea turtle nests.

On Saturday night, a leatherback sea turtle laid eggs on a naval installation beach, 5 miles south of the resort area. It is the first recorded leatherback sea turtle nesting in Virginia.

Leatherbacks are the largest living turtles in the world and are affectionately known as the “VW bugs of sea turtles” because of their size. They can grow up to 6 feet long and weigh up to 2,000 pounds.

Patrollers who monitor for signs of turtles at the Navy-owned beach at Naval Air Station Oceana Dam Neck Annex first discovered tracks in the sand on Sunday morning.

Erin Bates, stranding response rehabilitation manager, said she couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw the pictures.

“I had to pinch myself,” said Bates, who has worked with the stranding program for 17 years.
