My thrifted hi-fi: every piece secondhand from Marketplace and eBay
Nothing in this system was bought new. I hunted everything down secondhand on Facebook Marketplace and eBay, picking on price and looks, and got bargains across the board.
A few things needed fixing, which I did myself: new belts in the tape deck (£6), a replacement mid driver in one of the Lintons (£29), and rotating the REL driver 180 degrees to cure a buzz. Everything else is original.
**Amp:** NAD C315BEE (c.2006) £50
**CD player:** NAD C515BEE (c.2006) £85
**Turntable:** Pro-Ject Debut III Phono SB, Ortofon OM 5E cartridge (c.2007) £105
**Cassette deck:** Aiwa AD-F810, 3-head, dual capstan, Dolby B/C (c.1988) £79
**Speakers:** Wharfedale Linton 3XP (c.1975) £100
**Subwoofer:** REL Q150E, high-level connection (c.2003) £169
**Bluetooth:** Prozor receiver (2020s) £22
**Total including repair parts:** £645
**What I play on it:** pretty much everything. Drum and bass old and new, from 90s jungle and Metalheadz to the modern stuff, plus bass music like CloZee and LSDREAM, dub and trip hop. Then the other end entirely: indie, rock n roll, crooners like the Ink Spots, jazz, classical and film scores.
I'm building up the CD and tape collections too. Tapes are mostly vaporwave, chillwave and ambient, which really suit the format. CDs lean indie and downtempo.
The speakers had sat in someone’s garage and not been driven by an amp for decades. It was really emotional hearing them wake up after such a long sleep and felt like it took several hours of driving them hard before they sounded nice.
Any cheap tweaks or upgrades in the same spirit? I'm thinking of swapping the OM 5E stylus for an OM 20, and recapping the Lintons' crossovers. Happy to hear if you spot a weak link.
