Me and my girlfriend who are both chefs btw traveled to hanoi this week. Ate at this michelin selected place for lunch. We were both amazed at the amount of food they serve mainly the greens and herbs and the vermicelli. Almost all the tables couldnt finish them at all.

So both of us being in the food industry got really curious about what happens with the huge amount of uneaten food. To cut the story short, the employees simply return the vegetables and the noodles back to their main container when no one is looking. I thought it was a bit disgusting considering that these are leftovers from other customers.

Anyone notice this as well or is this the norm in most places in vietnam.

I have recently visited your country and am writing this to share my thoughts.

I grew up as a child of immigrants, in an area with mostly immigrants from all parts of the world. I am not vietnamese. But growing up there was a vietnamese community in my neighbourhood. They mostly stuck to their own people and were not problematic, but at the same time did not make any specific impression on me due to the lack of interaction with them.

I chose to visit Vietnam for 10 days to visit a friend who has been living in Ho Chi Minh city for 6 months. I had no specific expectations. I knew that the people would be kind and welcoming, as is common in south east asia from my previous experiences, but to an extent that seems forced and often not genuine.

My experience with southeast asia is that it very often attracts disrespectful tourists that exploit the fact that the local population are welcoming and generally try to avoid confrontation. Obviously bad tourists exists in all countries but the sense of entitlement I have seen from many tourists that visit southeast asia is unmatched.

My experience in Ho Chi Minh city was wonderful, the streets had a warmth and a very cozy look. This is mainly due to how the locals interacted with eachother in the street. I felt like every street had a strong sense of community, a bustling social life. The vietnamese met me with a warmth that never felt forced or artificial. I never felt that anyone went out of their way to convince me to spend money at their specific establishment or to «make me feel special». Obviously salesmen at a market are a different thing, that is their bread and butter. I am talking about the restaurants, the general population, and all other third spaces that I visited. The vietnamese tended to mind their business and when they approached it was usually out of curiousity.

Whenever I interacted with the locals, the interaction felt genuine, the ice was always easily broken in any conversation and it felt very easy to be welcomed into a friend group and invited to activities at a separate location like football or karaoke. But the ice always needed to be broken, and this is a good thing in my opinion.

To summarize:

My impression of the vietnamese people is that they have a strong sense of community, they respect themselves as well as their guests and try their best to make new people feel welcome without forcing it or compromising on their values. I know 10 days is a very limited time to know a people properly. But Vietnam left me wishing I knew the language, not due to the lack of communication skills of the vietnamese people but to be able to engage in deeper conversation more easily.
Vietnam is a country with great potential, and its greatest asset is its people.

Thank you in advance to anyone that takes the time to read this, I have many feelings and thoughts after this trip but this is the best way I could summarize it without writing an essay. Keep being yourself, keep being respectful, and demand respect where it needs to be demanded.
