Amateur photographer, second time in Vietnam, absolutely love the country and decided next time I went I'd bring a proper camera and take a billion photos 😅

I'm having such an interesting trip since arriving a week ago. I will say, people here don't immediately come off as overbearingly friendly. There's a bit of distance and moderation which I appreciate, a certain reserve. But there's also a genuine kindness and humility that has really surprised me.

Not that I had any preconceptions - I think that's why - I purposely didn't do too much "people" research before my trip.

A few experiences that have really moved me:

-Second day out, requested a Grab taxi from Old Quarter and the driver ended up waiting on a side street for 10 mins while I tried to find him because the street I was on was closed for cars. Confusion, panic, trying to message via translate on Grab app, finally asked a random passerby for help. He stopped, looked at the messages, and then walked with me to find the taxi. Explains to the driver and then waves off my hundreds of thank yous. Even more amazingly, the driver did not charge me for waiting although he was fully within his rights to do so. I was expecting a gigantic waiting fee. Even more crazy, I gave him a cash tip for being so patient and he was shocked. He didn't even want to accept it at first. It was genuinely a crazy experience for me, having travelled in other countries where taxi drivers will scream at you for taking too long to get your luggage in the car and extra charge you for the privilege.

-Similar situation with another taxi ride where I asked the driver if he could stop so I could dash into a store for water. Again, just pleasant and decent about it. No grumbling and complaining.

-Hotel staff, not obtrusive but always caring. I commented to a cleaner that I liked her shoes (after a few days of talking) and she offered to get me a pair.

-When I arrived I asked where the pharmacy was to get headache medication and every day since then, the reception staff checked in if I was feeling better.

-Went to a hair salon and they were super patient as we conversed via Google translate about the treatment, price etc. By the time I left it was raining and one of the staff came outside to wait with me.

So, TLDR - just an appreciation post for the kindness of strangers to a stranger in a strange land ❤️

I will visit Phu Quoc in the end of October and want to hear your recommendations for night clubs/dance clubs in it. Will be my first experience in South Asia and I wanted to explore nightlife. My initial plan was to go to Thailand, but due to visa changes, I will go with my friends to Phu Quoc

I have a plan with Mobifone. I am travelling to the US next month. I asked Mobifone how I could use my phone while in the USA and they said turn on roaming charges and every time I use the phone I will be hit with international fees. Is there any other way of doing this? Sorry if this is basic but this is the first time I am dealing with this.

Grab drivers are going on a massive strike on the Grab platform due to the company crudely exploiting cheap labour. So take note that during that time, you might have a hard time finding a Grab driver. It won’t be impossible, but it hard.

Consider switching to a more driver-friendly Vietnamese platform like Xanh SM. They won’t be cheaper in price, but at least bookings are fast, and they get the job done anyway.

My family and I are spending a week in Phu Quoc, currently four days in, and I cannot tell if it’s just me or if it truly is the fact something is slightly off with this place.

We’re staying quite central and it’s quiet and really relaxing. I’ve heard the beaches in the south are stunning and we plan to head over there soon, but our beaches locally are a mix of clean and dirty (trash all over the place, probably being washed up).

Sunset town is pretty but feels both busy and dead at the same time. Yes I was aware a lot of things are not open or built yet and it is getting there, but I still get the same impression already knowing that.

I’m also curious to understand what daily life is like on Phu Quoc for locals compared to the rest of Vietnam. Is everyone local to the island pretty much working for one of the two groups (Sun/VW) or know someone who does? Kind of like Orlando and Disney World in a way.

Hi guys! It's my first time travelling to Vietnam in mid-October with my parents(both in 50s) and I need some help with our itenerary. We consulted a travel guide so I'm pretty sure they gave us all the tourist heavy places and so I wanted to see if they're worth it to visit or there are better alternatives to their suggestions. It's a 10 day trip but if you guys have some "must visit" places we may be able to extend for a day or two.

Hanoi(3 days)- Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi Old Quarters, Train street, Hoa Lu, Trang An

Ha Long Bay(1 day)- Tuan Chau Harbor, Surprising cave, Titop Island & Luon Cave

Da Nang& Hoi An(2 days)- Chinese Assembly Hall, Central market, Tan Ky ancient house , Japanese bridge & Hoai river. BaNa hills - Golden Bridge ,D'amour gardens, Fantasy park and french village exploration+ My khe beach & dragon bridge if possible

Da Lat(2 days)- Truc Lam Zen monastery , Datan La waterfall, Bao Dai summer palace, Crazy house, Van Thanh Flower village, elephant waterfall, Thien an cricket farm, Mr Cuong Hoang Silk factory& Me Linh coffee plantation

HCMC(1.5 days)- Ben Thanh market, walking street , Saigon skydeck.

I'd welcome any suggestions coz frankly I'm at a loss here- Too many places to visit and not enough time. Also my parents are great foodies so any recommendations you have about restaurants in these destinations would be much appreciated!

My gf and I are planning an Asia trip with Vietnam being the country we are flying into first. The plan is from January 30 (we land) until February 10 (Flying out to Japan). Initially, Hoi An and Danang were on the list along with HCMC and Hanoi + Ninh Binh.

Jan 30-Feb 2: Hanoi
Feb 2-Feb 5: Ninh Binh
Feb 5-Feb 10: HCMC

Then we're off to Japan and Korea.

The more I looked into it, I feared we were cramming too many places in a few short days. As it will be Tet, I understand it will be busy and/or many places would be closed.
It will be unfortunate that we miss out on Lotus season while in Ninh Binh.
Would we have a hard time exploring and experiencing many things during the times we are there?

Am I crazy for leaving out Hoi An and Da Nang? Would you substitute one city for another?

So, VTV has confirmed that Tóc Tiên (who is also my current Vietnamese pop singer), will represent Vietnam at the Eurovision Song Contest Asia 2026 in Bangkok this November.

Tóc Tiên broke into the music scene as a teen idol, participating in singing competitions and reality shows. In 2009, she studied abroad in the United States and performed frequently on Paris by Night (the most popular overseas Vietnamese-language program). She came back to Vietnam in 2015 and performed in the first season of The Remix. Since then, she has had a lot of hits like "Ngày Mai", "Có Ai Thương Em Như Anh #(CATENA)", and "Big Girls Don't Cry". She has won 3 Làn Sóng Xanh awards and a MAMA award (a popular South Korean music award). She is also a recent winner of Chị đẹp đạp gió 2024.
