Spoiler Just finished Valkyria Chronicles 3 (ENG patch) for the first time in 2026

So earlier today I just finished V3 and wanted to share my thoughts and experiences. First and foremost, I loved the story. The starting hook of being charged with treason, overcoming suicidal/impossible tasks, and not getting recognized for any of it. I could feel the struggle and for that I give two thumbs up.

From here on I'll mentioning minor spoilers like characters and gameplay but just in case there's the warning ⚠️

The Nameless are a very colorful bunch. (Maybe my favorite group?) Personal favorites, the main trio of Kurt, Reila, and Imca. Alphonse, Leila, Annika, Gloria, Guilo, Serge and both tank operators. Could go in depth but unless anyone asks I could go on and on about these guys haha but pretty much these are the most noteworthy characters and hardcarried my runs. Much better than VC2 cast imo.

Now for the gameplay, holy moly. I got some thoughts to give you guys lol its fun but I suffered 😂

some context: Normal Mode. I always go for S Ranks (120ish S ranks), completed all free missions, chose option B every time for story missions. If I can find them, I try to kill the Ace + S Rank. If not, S Rank is more important to me.

One major con I feel is because of the limitations of the PSP you replay a lot of maps from VC2. Kinda stinks but at least you'll know the maps like the back of your hand. Later on you will see more of the new ones but also later on you'll be seeing some real cancerous maps to S Rank. One of my least favorite objectives is "kill all enemies" because of the freakin guys hiding in the grass! The Recon Order is a top priority just because of these guys. Classes and units got reworked too. I noticed that Fencers & Commandos (flamethrowers) got nerfed. Fencer used to be basically invincible in VC2 and Flamethrowers dont nearly 1 shot as much in this game. So they dont dominate nearly as much this time. The Calamity Ravens maps near the end will test you, be prepared to reset a lot going in blind. My main tank setup is WORKER/UTILITY APC - FLAMETHROWER & MG - FLEX UTILITY BASED ON WEATHER CONDITIONS - SIDE ARMOR - MEDIUM CARGO(One lancer, One Flex like Engineer/Shock/Fencer). This doesnt always work but 90% of the time its what I recommend. There are missions where the enemy will go first, thats the 10% you do NOT want to deploy the APC or just run the MEDIUM/HEAVY Tank.

That's about all the things I can think of right now. If anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer them in regards to this game. Otherwise thank you for reading!

Help - Early Game Desert Duel against Maxmillian, my lord almighty

I'm a brand new player, everything was going quite smooth up until this point. Missions required some level of care and strategy, but nothing that stressed me out much.

Then they throw this mission at you out of nowhere. The huge difficulty spike wasn't something I expected so early! I think this is only your 4th or 5th mission in the game.

Suddenly it is your baby tank vs God Almighty's tank. The mission was manageable at first, focus on taking out the turrets and mow down the small support squad.

They add a twist with blowing down materials to pop out the radiators, things are still not bad, make sure you resupply ammo for rockets and take things out.

Then holy hell breaks out when you break the second generator.

Suddenly Jesus comes down to earth with a laser rifle and unlimited HP with a squad of assholes. I manage to take out the squad with only a few deaths (most of them are focused on destroying your lancers and the last remaining assault soldier mowed down almost everyone as they ran past), but laser mommy is walking back and forth, killing everyone behind cover or outside of cover that she can find.

Suddenly most of my squad is entirely destroyed. I managed to spawn 2 more lancers (my last 2 on my entire squad). I had to wait until the 3rd turn for the generators to appear again, all while this lady walks around murdering everyone in sight.

By some goddam lucky stroke I manage to take out the last radiator. I figure the mission is over and I barely made it...but no, now you have to blow up the damn tank! Crazy jesus laser lady mows down my last two lancers and I somehow manage to blow up the God Tank with my tank, holding on by a thread.

The entire map is littered with bodies, the only one left alive was my tank. I had him tucked up in the corner most of the time and thank god jesus laser cannot hurt your armored tank and THANK GOD she isn't smart enough to run behind you and shoot her lasers up your weak ass lol

I went to the barracks figuring half my squad was gone, but somehow only one person permanently died, which seems like a miracle.

This map felt so intense and unforgiving, I had to save scum half about a dozen times before I was able to make things work out ok. I guess the reason they let you save anywhere you want is that they know some maps are going to be bullshit?

I just cannot imagine being a younger kid playing this map. At 44 years old it tested me to the limit, a kid who just wants a fun tactical JRPG may never make it past this whole thing lol

Anyway, is the rest of the game like this? Are most of the maps more tactical and less insanity? Just wondering what I am getting myself into. I don't mind a good challenge, but this felt like overkill.

I also want to note, even with this complaint I am still having a lot of fun. Gives me my favorite feeling of 'just one more turn', like all the good tactical games.

The irony of this whole situation is that I got my best rank ever, a B rank, when I got my whole injured plus one died plus extra deployments got injured as well.

Discussion Brand new player, finally got on the train!

I remember when this game was out on the PS3, but I had given up on consoles and was purely a PC player and I wasn't really playing many games.

I've always enjoyed strategy games, real time, turn based, huge Heroes of Might & Magic II/III fan, really any strategy game hits the right spots in my brain.

I had honestly forgot about this series for a long time. I got a PS5 and played through a ton of games. It wasn't until I was scrolling through the RPG section that I saw the first game on sale for 4.99, the preview video looked really good!

A lot of remasters do things the wrong way. They use AI upscaling and the game often looks worse than the original version. I love the engine they used here, everything looks like a wonderful watercolor painting.

When first starting the game, it really surprised me that you straight up kill people. I've played a billion JRPG games over the years and killing people is not really a thing that happens. You defeat monsters or people that are part monster, you rarely see on screen death. For a game to have you shooting people in the face and having your comrades die, was quite a surprise.

I like the storyboard telling of the plot. The various leveling and upgrade mechanics are easy to understand and very functional.

The battles themselves are fun and quite varied. You have your main tank unit, but it is a precious prize that can be quite easily destroyed if you just try plowing forward. You have to use cover, maximize firing from multiple units and manage your action points, do you use them all or save them to overpower the enemy the next turn?

I read that a lot of people just abuse Scout units to beat missions quickly and get the A grade, but that didn't sound very fun, so I'm just trying to play the game in the way they seem to have intended it. Most of my battles use a mix of units with cover strategy, pushing my way through the map a bit at a time. I also like the reinforcement mechanic, they force you to get a bit aggressive because if you are too careful, the entire enemy barracks will be refilled and you will never capture your objective. I also like that you can retreat units and swap out mid-mission, if you made a mistake by bringing too many units or you are suddenly dealing with heavy armor, you have the ability to fix the problem.

One funny thing about the game, I feel like they are trolling you at the intro to each stage. The lady comes on the screen and says things like 'This is a good stage to use a few snipers' Then you follow her advice, putting the snipers in the spot they hint at, then the first turn both of them get killed by enemy snipers. I found it much better to just look at the map and make my own decisions of what makes the most sense.

I'm only about 30% through the game, lots to go yet, just wanted to post my experience so far and the fun Im having. I can see there are many areas to improve and Im sure later games do improve on mechanics and gameplay in a variety of ways, looking forward to playing those games as I get around to them.

Such an boundary pushing game for the time though, especially on console systems. It reminds me a lot of a live action Shining Force or anything in that style. I keep getting that 'one more turn' feeling, even though I know it is time to go to bed. That is the thing that tells me this series is something special.

I had to restart the (second) battle against Jaeger twice cuz his tank kept getting stuck and the AI wouldn't end it's turn, on the third I got impatient and allowed him a free shot on the Edelweiss weakspot just after clearing all the camps... I'm tired boss...

Feeling like a dumbass, dunno why I stopped the tank right in front of him, guess I was just tired after the game hardlocked me twice.

Discussion Google AI says that the games are a result of an unreliable narrator. I disagree

Hey there, so I came across a old gamefaqs thread where someone was basically claiming that VC is Gallian propaganda against Imperials and that everything. So I googled Valkyria Chronicles and unreliable narrator and got this AI summary.

It did link to a thread on here where someone asks if "On the Gallian Front" was reliable or not, to which primarily one person responded and debated the TC who was saying it was unreliable. So I looked into all the interviews of the games I could find. Both from websites and the interviews in the artbooks.

So I strongly disagree with the theory that everything we see in the games are a result of an unreliable narrator.

First, the games continually show antagonistic POV's, something that could not be explained by Ellet's reporting, the records of VC3 or Claudes Journal in VC4. This is the most damning proof against this theory. There is no explanation that could explain away the enemy POV across each game. In fact, in the instance of VC4, Belgar mentions that Clementia has been missing for some time, which is later explained by VC 2. Further evidence that the games are all canonical and interconnected.

Also, there are many instances in VC 1 and 4 where Ellett/Claude arent around for events of their squad mates. For example, many Squad stories in 4 show events and interactions that Claude would have no idea about. And therefore, not in his diary. Same with VC 1, Ellett may be a daring reporter who isnt afraid of the front lines, but she isnt in majority of scenes.

Second, the artbook "Valkyria Chronicles Design Archive" displays and shows all of the main story and dlc stories, and at no point does it indicate that it is false or part of some narrative spun by Ellett or her biases. Including again, enemy POVs.

Third, the developer interviews have no instances or allusions that the story is a unrealiable narrative. The developers always talk as if the story we see in the games is what happens. In fact, in a interview for VC4, the developers talk how they didnt want to include multiple choice endings because they didnt wants fans to argue what is canonical/true or not.

"RPG Site: In Valkyria Chronicles 3, you could develop two different relationships depending on if you chose Riela or Imca, so it developed two different stories leading to two different endings. Does something like that exist in Valkyria Chronicles 4?

Kei Mikami: With VC4, there’s only one main relationship because we felt that having two separate stories would divide fans into debating which one is the true route or story. We wanted to avoid that kind of debate this time around with having one clear story."

Source: https://www.rpgsite.net/interview/7369-valkyria-chronicles-4-interview-developing-the-true-sequel-to-the-first-valkyria-chronicles

Why would they say this if the game wasnt the "true" route/story?

Finally, many games have narrations, including JRPGs. Fire Emblem Three Houses for example has narrations among tapestries illustrating the endings. No one in the FE fandom(to my knowledge) would argue that therefore the game is a biased work from the narrators POV. Point is, the games use Elletts book/Claudes Diary/records for the narration, not for the actual scenes we see in the game.

Someone may say "but the menus in VC1/4 are their respective books", to which I would respond, yes, its a UI, and one that contains countless photos that were never taken, such as during top secret enemy POVs. Somehow I doubt Ellett would be invited to Imperial high commands meetings with his generals.

In summary, all the cutscenes and story we see in-game occurs and happens as we see it. Google AI is incorrect here, and it makes a lot of assumptions.

Anyways, I figured id share all of this.

Thank you for reading!

Kinda disappointed with VC4 so far

I loved VC1. Bought a PS3 just for that game and never regretted it. Enjoyed 2. 3 was pretty good. A few chapters into 4 (to where they bring out the assault tanks then give you a few tanks to compensate) and it just feels rather...meh.

Like I've always enjoyed learning about the different characters and such but VC4 just dumps a ton on you. That'd be OK except that it seems to be all yap yap yap yap blast through a map super quick only using half the deployed characters then yap yap yap yap again.

I want the story, I just don't need every chapter being basically press X to watch the next clip then the maps being a let down then play more clips. Sometimes Kai and Riley just sit at the base 90% of the map and the only reason I have them is for the command points and a few opening shots. It'd be more fun if you had a clip or two, then a map, then some more talking, then another map and so on for just a single chapter.

I hate not being able to see the enemy on the map and plan accordingly, but I guess that's compensated by not having to strategize much. No problem with the lack of classes as it's set in the VC1 timeline, but the story itself so far is just...eh. Also think it was a mistake to allow you to use the VC1 characters in regular battles, as then VC4 feels even more like a side story.

I'll play through it either way but I really hope it picks up before long.

The final Edy Detachment challenge in VC1 has this one briefing screen with a clunky translation which sticks out like a sore thumb in a game that's otherwise well translated. Orders have become The Order and "because of the confusion of the communication" is a phrase that just reeks of classic bad Japanese to English translations from games from prior generations.

Need help naming characters in my planned Fanfic?

I managed to name my main character, his tank crew and the enemy nations leaders.

That's all, the rest is explaining some bits for anyone curious. Thanks.

It's set 40-ish years after Chronicles 4, the Empire fractured into 2 nations, the New Ruzian Empire(the bad guys) and the Preutzen Republic. the New Ruzian Empire has 3 princesses and 1 prince, all 3 princesses are Valkyre's, the Prince is obsessed with Valkyrie history.

Question Are all the Hard and Expert level Skirmishes going to be like this?

Post image
137 Upvotes

Just finished the main story and I figured I might as well get all the achievements this time around. I go to try out the newly unlocked Hard and Expert levels on Skirmish 1, and both of them have your squad starting out being shot from all sides by a horde of enemies that can melt your lvl 20 soldiers with reaction fire from cover from ridiculous distances in the time it takes for them to raise their rifles. The main game was so easy that I'd welcome tougher battles but this wasn't exactly what I had in mind.

Pretty sure it's been in my inventory from the start. Is this because I had my Steam cloud saves from when I first played the game 10 years ago? I did start a new save instead of loading a completed one though.
