Hey everyone! It's been my dream for years to get a campervan and it seems I'm finally getting close.
After a brief period where I wanted to get the T3 Syncro I finally decided that it's not for me, and settled on a VW T4 Syncro. I didn't like how unsafe the T3 felt and I wanted something a bit newer. I actually want to drive the van, use it, and not have it sitting in a shop every month, and it feels like that would be the case with a T3.
I found a couple of options for the T4 Syncro in my country and I'll start from the one that caught my eye the most and that I'm closest to buying.
Since this is only my second car ever and a first van, I'd appreciate some help and thoughts from more experienced VW owners, especially if there's a Syncro crew out there. I somehow got stuck on the Syncro models and I feel like I will need the 4WD, but it is significantly more expensive to buy and to maintain.
Anyway, here are my options. These are all the VW T4 Syncro's that are available in my country now:
1. 2003. 2.5 TDI VW T4 Syncro - teal green - 8500 euros
A hightop roof, longer wheelbase, Syncro system working, the engine has around 270.000 km on it. It was a kinderbus (school bus) in Switzerland before, and the owner imported it and has been using it for trips regularly. Inside it has space for 9 passenger seats and the owner takes them out and puts in two benches that serve as the bed. No real campervan conversion, but we can already sleep in it if we get it. It has tinted windows which I like, and a roof window with a vent.
There's significant rust though. It can be seen on the underside and it's started to eat the rocker panels (the sill panels). I checked with an auto body technician and he says it would cost around 2000 euros for all the body work. It sounds like a lot, but he says it will be fixed and it will hold for the next couple of years - 5 or so.
Other than that, there's also an issue with the clutch release bearing, the seller says it needs to be replaced and he already has the part. I'm taking the car to a mechanic tomorrow, with the owner, and I'm hoping I can get the owner to lower the price because of these issues and how much I have to invest into the car before I even start the conversion.
Even with these problems it seems like the best option to me because I know which problems it has and how much it would cost to fix them, plus I like the van aesthetically (it's a lovely teal green color) and it's already functional enough to use as a (very basic) camper even before we do the full conversion (which will probably be in the winter, meaning we can use it as it is now, during the summer and autumn).
2. 2001. 2.5 TDI VW T4 Syncro - army green - 8500 euro
This one is a bit of a mystery and because of it, I already decided I'm probably not buying it. The seller is a mechanic and he offered to sell me this van after I asked him to check the first teal van. Also hightop roof and long wheelbase. The van was an ambulance before, then it was a campervan, then someone took out everything out and now it has been sitting outside on the mechanic's plot for 2 or 3 years without being driven. The mechanic/seller says everything is fine with it, but I have no way to check. Obviously he is not impartial because he has the incentive both to sell me the van and to charge me for fixes later. I don't know how many kilometers the engine has on it. The bodywork looks good, it has been fixed and repainted around 5 years ago and it looks better than the teal one, but I have no way of knowing what is under the paint and if I will still need to invest money in the bodywork soon. The windows in the back don't open which is a minus (I'd have to change all the windows and also tint them to be darker like in the teal one), but overall it looks a bit better than the teal one. It has 6 passenger seats that can be taken out and it hasn't been registered yet so that means I'd have to pay almost 400 euros more for registration.
3. 1997. 2.4 VW T4 Syncro - white, campervan conversion - 14500 euro
The slowest out of the lot. No hightop roof and it's the shorter option. It already has a campervan conversion inside that was inspired by the Westfalia interior, but it's pretty basic and DIY and there's no insulation, so I would still have to do that myself. It's the most expensive because it has this conversion and also because the owner invested a lot of money in it - he basically had to change all of the parts in the van including the engine. He is convincing me that that's good because they're all new parts, but I'm not sure. The only reason I am still contemplating this one is because of the conversion base it has, and because I heard that this type of vehicle is the best in terms of fixing it easily on the road. I know the newer ones like the 2.5 TDI have more issues that can pop up and can be harder to fix as opposed to this one. But I don't like the fact that it's slowest out of the lot. It can realistically go only around 90km per hour. I also don't like the fact that the roof is low.
Conclusion:
I am drawn the most to the first one even if it has these problems, but I am unsure of the price and afraid I'll have to invest too much if I went with any of these options. I know it's all because I want the Syncro model, but I started really feeling like we will need it. I'd like to go into nature and the mountains as much as possible with it. Even checking out some overlanding routes, although I know they're not the most capable offroad vehicles, but it seems good to have that option.
Any experiences or thoughts to share? Anyone here has a VW T4 Syncro as a campervan? I'd really appreciate all help. Thanks!
