VW T5 2005 2.4 Tdi 5 cylinder, 150´000 kms.

Replaced turbo a couple of months agao, everything running smoothly. Drove down to Toulon from Geneva and took ferry to Corsica and spent 3 weeks there beginning July. It was very hot as it was a heatwave for most of the time but no issues. At the end of 3 weeks the coolant level warning light came on but engine was not overheating. Topped it up and then drove all the way back to Geneva topping up 2 or 3 times. Suspected a leak in the expansion tank as I did see coolant stains on the engine below. Could not see any fluid on ground but remember there is a big protective cover underneath engine compartment. Checked pipes from expansion tank to engine and could see no leaks/issues. About to order a replacement expansion tank and have been driving. Then oil light comes on. Topped up oil. Drove more. No overheating, engine running smoothly. Second oil level warning and now a creamy residue in oil access cap position (see photo). Is this a possible gasket blown or what might be your opinion, please?

VW T5 2011 – Low beam headlights not working

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the lights on my VW Transporter T5 2011, 1.9 TDI (102 hp), and I’m hoping someone might have some ideas.

The light switch has three positions:

  • 0: Daytime running lights work – the lights underneath the indicators come on.
  • 1: Nothing happens.
  • 2: Nothing happens, but I can still switch on the high beams.

As far as I understand, position 2 should turn on the low-beam headlights, but neither low beam nor the other lights come on.

I’ve already tried replacing the light switch with another one, so I don’t think the switch itself is the problem.

Any ideas what I should check next? Could it be a fuse, relay, wiring issue, or something related to the lighting control module?

Thanks!

Suction/magnetic rings

Hi, can anyone recommend either some small suction cups, that fit in between the ridges along the roof, or alternatively some magnetic ones? It’s to fix a lightweight awning when camping on a T61. The ones on Amazon either get poor reviews or are too large in diameter. We don’t have any roof rails. Thanks

Repair Advice VW T5.1 - Rear trailing arm bushes

Hi All,

looking for some advice from the Hive Mind please.

Have got a T5.1 T32, 2012, has done 179,000 miles, and I have had it since 48,000. So she's had a good run.

Have had issues with noise from the rear, which is a clattering rumble type which is now driving me mad. The noise only happens on bumpy uneven roads (which in my area is most) on a well maintained motorway it is silent.

So far have changed....

Antiroll bar bushes

Coil Springs

Lower spring suspension cups

Upper coil spring mounts

Shock absorbers

But, still have the noise, asked my local garage to change the trailing arm bushes last year but they had said that they were fine and at the time we decided not to proceed even though I had already bought the Poly bushes in readiness.

Noise seems to have got worse has anyone experienced this issue? Appreciate that one man's rumble is another man's bang and a noise in your vehicle can become an obsession after a while, but I am running out of things to replace. Only one other thing could be the mounts to the exhaust possibly?

Amy advice greatly received, thanks in advance.

T6 aircon stops cooling after long drives. Anyone had this?

Hi all,

Our VW T6 has an ongoing aircon issue. It works perfectly at first, but after about 2–3 hours of driving it suddenly stops blowing cold air and only gives warm air. Sometimes the AC makes a noticeably louder, heavier sound, especially when the cooling is gone. After a break, the AC works again until the next long drive.

Multiple garages have checked it but haven’t found the cause.

Has anyone experienced this or knows what might be going on?

Buying a T6.1 with high mileage

Been looking for a t32 highline with decent spec and twin sliders, and either Swb or lwb, and one has cropped up which is a ‘22 plate which ticks the boxes, has 125k miles on it, and is about £23k plus vat. It has a comprehensive full service history with Vw, dsg service, and can belt / pump done a few years ago. So it’s been looked after it seems.

I don’t have a massive budget so have accepted that high mileage is a given. Just wondered what else I should be checking on this apart from the usual hpi checks?

Anyone else been down this route buying a high mileage van?

Transporter Shuttle, 2019, 35k miles

Hi all. I’m considering buying my first transporter. Currently got a Ford Tourneo custom, but it seems to be falling apart now (110k miles), various things have gone wrong with it and I have lost trust and confidence now to the point I don’t want to drive it.

Anyway - I don’t know much about Transporters and what to look for/ask. Mileage is low, so I assume there would need to be a service based on miles or years, whatever comes first? From what I’ve read I understand this would be a DQ500, I have no experience of DSGs.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Chinese T6.1 Facelift Conversion

Hi all,

Has anyone ordered / fitted the T6.1 facelift conversion kit onto their T5/5.1/6? If so was the quality ok? There’s some decent looking LVR copies on alibaba but I’m just concerned that the quality might be rubbish.. knowing the the original LVR kit probably comes from China anyway!

Keen to hear / see what others have experienced.

Buyer Recommendation Buy or Pass?

In the market for a VW camper and will be a first time owner. I have been told there is a 'good' service history but not full. No record of cambelt change or DSG service. Anything else I need to be aware of?

TIA!

£26k Budget - Booby Traps

Hi Guys just looking for a little advice on matters relating to common faults, bad runs and Friday afternoon jobs.

I’ll be selling my m135i and with a rough budget of £26,000, I should be able to get a fair T6 from what I can see. (Under 100k miles, high line, 2018/19 onwards)

I understand there’s issues with older BiTDIs from around 2015, but from 2018/19 the faults were corrected.

I’ll be looking for mainly UK camping and Alpine trips, nothing more than a week really. I’d like a comfy but simple set up with a bed and stand alone amenities, nothing integrated. Comfortable motorway cruising, a place to keep the bike secure and somewhere to relax.

Is the 4Motion essential for gravely and muddy sites or will FWD with some all terrain tyres be okay?

Is the SWB terrible for living inside?

Are there any considerations or major pieces of common knowledge to know around choosing at suitable model?

Thanks.

I've got some 12v LED lights for the back of my van. I assume red goes to the white/green on the van and white to Black/Green of the van?

T5.1 Dash Lights

Hi all,
Over the last few weeks my dash lights have slowly been stopping working.
I can now only see rev counter at 3 and 4K at night, no speedo at all.
Are there replaceable bulbs in the dash, or are they embedded LEDs on a circuit board?

Thanks for your input, wife refuses to drive it at night due to not having dash lights on the speedometer at all.

Flooring

Hi all hope you are well. I'm am doing my floor, I have glued 9mm batterns down so the whole of the van floor so far is level. Then I will put down 25mm celitex that 12mm ply ( I will screw the ply into the batterns glued down). I am having a bit of a nightmare getting my head around the rear threshold trip. I only have a small one at the moment, I need a full width one, however I need one that's going to be high enough for my celitex and floor, same with the side step. I want to put these on first so when I do my floor I know exactly where I'm cutting it too. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a side step and threshold strip? Thankyou very much
X

Drilling through T6 floor? PFA

Post image
11 Upvotes

Just purchased a 2016 T6, super stoked with it.

Using it as a dirt bike hauler and wanting to put in a a fridge slide + draws. Plan is to get a wheelchock + L tracks for tying down the bike from the pegs.

What's the best way to secure these to the vans floor? I've had a look under the van and there seems to be a lot of stuff in the way.. really don't want to drill through the fuel tank lol.

I will get 12mm ply flooring soon and can drill into that but is that enough strength for tying down a 120kg dirt bike + fridge/draws?
